Abstract:Nitrate pollution is considered to be one of the most common environmental problems in groundwater, especially in areas affected by human mining, such as the arid region of northern China. However, the human health risk assessment of nitrate pollution in this area has not yet been carried out. In this study, groundwater samples were taken in the Selian mining area in Inner Mongolia to conduct a full analysis of water quality. On this basis, the groundwater quality, the distribution range of nitrate pollution, and human health risks were evaluated. The results show that the groundwater in the Selian mining area is neutral to alkaline, with high salinity and hardness. The concentration of nitrate ions in groundwater generally exceeds the standard, and the maximum exceeds 5.48 times the value specified in the Chinese national standard, indicating that groundwater nitrate pollution needs to be controlled urgently. Groundwater is polluted by large amounts of nitrogen fertilizer used by humans in agricultural activities. At the same time, mining activities have accelerated the severity and spread of pollution. Groundwater is not recommended for direct human life and irrigation use in the study area unless purification measures are taken. Nitrate pollution is more harmful to children through groundwater, about 1.54 times that of adults. Excess nitrate is transported into the body through drinking groundwater, so proper drinking water control will reduce the health risks of nitrate, such as centralized water supply. This study will provide a scientific basis for the rational use of groundwater and nitrate pollution control in the area.

Investigating sources, driving forces and potential health risks of nitrate and fluoride in groundwater of a typical alluvial fan plain

Abstract:Groundwater of alluvial fan plains is the foremost water source, especially in arid/semiarid regions. Its contaminants are big issues for water supply and public health concern. To reveal the groundwater chemistry, contaminants sources and health threats in alluvial aquifers, 81 groundwaters were collected from a typical alluvial fan plain of northern China for nitrogen, fluoride and major ions analysis. Statistical analysis and hydrochemical diagrams as well as human health risk assessment were performed. Nitrate is widely distributed and 53% of groundwaters exceed the permissible limit with the maximum concentration up to 326 mg/L. The distributions of nitrite, ammonia and fluoride contaminants are sporadic in spatial, and the concentrations of fluoride in groundwaters are slightly beyond the permissible limit of 1 mg/L. The hydrochemical facies shift from HCO3-Ca or Mixed HCO3-Na·Ca type to Mixed Cl-Mg·Ca and ClCa type with the increase of nitrate content. Two factors (Factor-1 and Factor-2) are extracted by factor analysis and account 63% of the total variances. The positive loading of F− and negative loading of NO3− on Factor-2 reveal geogenic and anthropogenic origins, respectively. The significant positive loadings of TDS, TH, SO42−, Cl−, Ca2+, Mg2+ on Factor-1 reveal the governing mechanisms on groundwater chemistry by intermixed sources of geogenic origins and anthropogenic inputs. Hydrogeochemical evolution in the study area is driven by both water-rock interaction and anthropogenic forces. Anthropogenic inputs/influences are the dominated forces increasing groundwater nitrate content and salinity in the piedmont zone and the residential and industrial zone of the southeastern lower parts, and would pose potential non-carcinogenic risks to various populations via oral intake pathway. Rational measures should be taken to protect groundwater quality out of the threats of anthropogenic pollution. Abstract:In order to learn the pollution circumstance of groundwater nitrate detailedly in Songnen Plain of Northeast China and estimate its potential risk to human health of local residents, a total of 389 groundwater samples were collected in 2014 and studied from residential areas and public water supply wells in 11 cities and counties in southeastern of Songnen Plain. The analysis results showed that the spatial distributions of main chemical components in groundwater had great variations with statistical concentrations in the order of TDS> HCO3> Ca> NO3> Cl> Na> SO4> Mg> K> NH4> NO2. As for NO3, it ranged from less than 0.02mg/L to 497mg/L with an average value of 39.46mg/L indicating an obviously anthropogenic pollution. Even more than 32% of the samples exceeded the Grade III threshold (20mg/L of N) according to China's standard. The results obtained from principal component analysis showed that high NO3 concentration could be attributed to human activities, especially the excessive use of chemical fertilizers in agriculture. Further, a human health risk assessment (HHRA) model derived from the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) was applied to estimate the potential health risk of groundwater nitrate considering both drinking water and dermal contact pathways. The results indicated that potential health risks of adult males and females within about 60% of the area were at the acceptable level, while those within about 40% were beyond the acceptable level. The area at the acceptable level for children covered 49% of the total area while the same value for infants was 37%. The NO3 concentration in southeast and northeast of the study area was the highest so that residents in these regions were at the highest health risk. In conclusion, risk levels for different crowds in the study area varied obviously, generally in the order of infants> children> adult females> adult males, and the potential health risks of residents, especially minors and rural residents, should cause enough attention both from the society and the academic community.

Abstract:Access to safe drinking water is one of the fundamental human rights and an important part of healthy living. This study considered various land use methods, used geostatistical analysis, and triangular random model to explore nitrogen pollution and estimate its potential risk to human health for local populations in Songnen Plain of Northeast China and recognize parameter uncertainties. Nitrate concentrations in groundwater ranged from 0.01 to 523.45 mg/L, more than 72.35% of the samples exceeded Grade III threshold (20 mg/L of N) as per China's standard, and nitrate nitrogen content is greater than 20 mg/L accounted for around 60% of the research area, mainly distributed in the eastern and central high plain area. The nitrate-nitrogen content of groundwater in the town land was significantly higher than that of agricultural land, and the ammonia nitrogen content was conversely. The townland's risk value was two times that of agricultural land, considering different land use methods would avoid overestimating or underestimating regional risk value. Non-carcinogenic risks (HI) of two land use were above the safety level (i.e., HI > 1), suggesting that groundwater nitrate would have significant health effects on the age groups, and further threaten children. There was a wide range of fluctuations in the uncertainty of nitrogen concentration and model evaluation parameters; triangular random model was more sensitive to data changes, which could reduce the uncertainty. The contribution rate of nitrate-nitrogen concentration to risk was above 90%, which explained the need for random sampling to improve the evaluation results reliability. The findings in this paper will provide new insight for solving uncertainties in water safety management.
Occurrences of nitrate-contaminated groundwater in the piedmont aquifers: hydrogeochemical characteristics and health risks

Abstract:Groundwater nitrate (NO3-) contamination is a global concern. The distribution patterns, enrichment mechanisms, and human health risks of NO3- contaminated groundwater were investigated using 144 groundwater samples collected from domestic and irrigation wells in the piedmonts of the North China Plain (Beijing and Shijiazhuang areas). The results showed that the groundwater was neutral to weakly alkaline, and 47% of the groundwater samples had NO3- concentrations exceeding 50 mg/L, a threshold proposed by world health organization to threaten infants up to 3 months. Groundwater NO3- concentrations were generally higher in the Beijing piedmont than in the Shijiazhuang piedmont and decreased with depth in both piedmonts. High-NO3- (> 50 mg/L) groundwater was distributed sporadically spatially and mainly was of Ca-Mg-HCO3 hydrochemical facies. Stable isotopes (D and 18O) compositions and NO3-/Cl- ratios indicated that NO3- accumulation in groundwater was primarily due to use of N-fertilizers under agricultural practices, and was associated with groundwater recharge sources such as septic tank leakage and re-infiltration of reclaimed irrigation water. Water quality evaluation showed that groundwater quality was highly dependent on NO3- concentration, with entropy-weighted water quality index values increasing linearly with increasing NO3- concentrations. The potential health risk of high-NO3- groundwater was the most serious for infants in both the piedmonts. Therefore, reducing NO3- input from sources and drinking water intake is recommended to minimize the human health risk.

Abstract:As one of the most widespread pollutants worldwide, nitrogen has long been a concern in the environment, including groundwater. However, due to the limitations of investigations and study progress, there is still a poor understanding of groundwater nitrogen pollution and its potential effects on human health in many areas, particularly in developing countries. The spatiotemporal evolution of groundwater nitrate nitrogen levels and potential human health risks in the Songnen Plain, Northeast China were comprehensively studied based on both our own test data and available published data that were collected by us over a study period from 1995 to 2015. Groundwater nitrate nitrogen concentrations exhibited significant temporal and spatial differences: there was an increasing trend with time; and the distribution of high concentration areas expanded from the central and western areas to the east with time. The similar pattern existed in the potential health risks posed to the residents considering the two exposure pathways including drinking water and dermal contact. The effects of groundwater nitrate nitrogen on human health depend on the nitrate concentration but there were also age differences, namely, in the order of infants > children > adult females ≈ adult males, according to the hazard quotient (HQ) used in the human health risk assessment (HHRA) model. The spatiotemporal evolution of groundwater nitrate nitrogen levels and potential human health risks indicate that the issue of nitrogen pollution in groundwater in the study area is worsening and needs further attention. The drivers that increased nitrate nitrogen concentrations in the groundwater of the study area were the increased fertilizer use due to the increased cultivated land area and implementation of a land fertility policy by the local government. It should be acknowledged that the results have uncertainties that not only come from the layout of sampling points and selection of spatial interpolation methods but also come from the parameter settings in the assessment model and assumptions of drinking water scenarios. However, the conclusions still have important reference value for groundwater pollution control and management and human health risk supervision and early warning.

Abstract:To assess groundwater nitrate contamination and its human health risks, 489 unconfined groundwater samples were collected and analyzed from Zhangjiakou, northern China. The spatial distribution of principle hydrogeochemical results showed that the average concentrations of ions in descend order was HCO3-, SO42-, Na+, Ca2+, Cl-, NO3-, Mg2+ and K+, among which the NO3- concentrations were between 0.25 and 536.73 mg/L with an average of 29.72 mg/L. In total, 167 out of 489 samples (~ 34%) exceeded the recommended concentration of 20 mg/L in Quality Standard for Groundwater of China. The high NO3- concentration groundwater mainly located in the northern part and near the boundary of the two geomorphic units. As revealed by statistical analysis, the groundwater chemistry was more significantly affected by anthropogenic sources than by the geogenic sources. Moreover, human health risks of groundwater nitrate through oral and dermal exposure pathways were assessed by model, the results showed that about 60%, 50%, 32% and 26% of the area exceeded the acceptable level (total health index>1) for infants, children, adult males and females, respectively. The health risks for different groups of people varied significantly, ranked: infants> children> adult males>adult females, suggesting that younger people are more susceptible to nitrate contamination, while females are more resistant to nitrate contamination than males. To ensure the drinking water safety in Zhangjiakou and its downstream areas, proper management and treatment of groundwater will be necessary to avoid the health risks associated with nitrate contamination.

Abstract:A comprehensive understanding of the role of natural and anthropogenic factors in groundwater pollution is essential for sustainable groundwater resource management, especially in alluvial plains with intensive anthropogenic activities. Numerous studies have focused on the contribution of individual factors on groundwater pollution in alluvial aquifers, but distinguishing the effects of natural and anthropogenic factors is limited. In this study, 64 wells were sampled in different seasons from the Yellow River alluvial plain in China for hydrochemical and isotopic analysis to investigate the spatiotemporal distribution, sources and health risks of fluoride and nitrate in alluvial aquifers. Results showed that fluoride contamination was widely distributed without significant seasonal variation, and 78.1 % of the dry season samples and 65.6 % of the wet season samples showed fluoride concentrations above the permissible limit (1.5 mg/L). High-F − groundwater was generally accompanied by Na-HCO 3 and Na-HCO 3 ·SO 4 water types. Fluoride was from a natural origin mainly associated with mineral dissolution, competitive adsorption, cation exchange, and evaporation. Groundwater nitrate contamination was spatially sporadic and showed significant seasonal differences. Only 13.6 % of the dry season samples and 3.2 % of the wet season samples had NO 3 − concentrations exceeded the permissible limit of 50 mg/L. The hydrochemical phase evolved from bicarbonate or sulfate type to chloride type with increasing nitrate concentration. Manure and sewage attributed to agricultural activities contributed the most nitrogen to groundwater, followed by soil organic nitrogen and chemical fertilizers, revealing the anthropogenic origin of nitrate. Nitrification was the dominant nitrogen transformation process in the wet season, and denitrification was prevalent in the dry season. Oral ingestion of high fluoride groundwater was a major threat to human health, especially for infants. This study provided a significant reference for water resources management in alluvial aquifers.

Abstract:Groundwater is the foremost water source of agricultural irrigation areas in northern China. However, the problem from excessive geogenic fluoride and anthropogenic nitrate in groundwater and its potential health risks are often neglected. This paper aims to identify the health threats, water quality and hydrochemistry in Weibei Plain, northern China. A total of 50 water samples collected in May 2021 were assessed by hydrogeochemical analysis, the entropy weight water quality index method and probabilistic human health risk assessment based on Monte Carlo stochastic simulation. The results showed that the hydrochemical type of surface water and groundwater was mainly SO4·Cl-Ca·Mg type. The rock weathering and cation exchanges were found to the important processes influencing hydrochemistry. The quality of surface water was higher than that of groundwater, with Class IV and Class V groundwater samples concentrated in the northwest of the study area. The F- concentration in groundwater samples generally exceeded the drinking water standard, which mainly came from mineral dissolution affected by excessive irrigation. Nitrate pollution in groundwater has regional characteristics, mainly from agricultural activities. Long-term use of groundwater might bring risks to residents' health, because more than 65% and 23% of groundwater samples exceeded the acceptable non-carcinogenic risk limits of F- and NO3- to children, respectively. Considering the uncertainty of model parameters, children will have a probability of more than 46.9% and 12.6% to face F- and NO3- risks in groundwater. Compared with NO3-, the high concentration of F- in groundwater posed a higher threat to human health, and children faced higher risks. Compared with the deterministic method, the stochastic simulation can more accurately reflect health risks. The findings of this study can help policymakers devise strategies to ensure a safe supply of domestic water.
Seasonal nitrate variations, risks, and sources in groundwater under different land use types in a thousand-year-cultivated region, northwestern China

Abstract:The global public health concern of nitrate (NO3-) contamination in groundwater is particularly pronounced in irrigated agricultural regions. This paper aims to analyze the spatial distribution of groundwater NO3-, assess potential health risks for local residents, and quantitatively identify nitrate sources during different seasons and land use types in the Jinghuiqu Irrigation District, a region in northwestern China with a longstanding agricultural history. The investigation utilizes hydrochemical parameters, dual isotopic data, and the Bayesian stable isotope mixing model (MixSIAR). The findings underscore significant seasonal variations in the average concentrations of NO3-, with values of 87.72 mg/L and 101.87 mg/L during the wet and dry seasons, respectively. Furthermore, distinct fluctuations in nitrate concentration were observed across different land use types, whereby vegetable lands manifested the maximum concentration. Prolonged exposure to elevated nitrate concentrations may pose potential health risks to residents, especially in the dry season when the non-carcinogenic groundwater nitrate risk surges past its wet season counterpart. The MixSIAR analysis revealed that chemical fertilizers accounted for the majority of nitrate pollution in vegetable lands, both during the dry season (49.6%) and wet season (41.2%). In contrast, manure and sewage contributed significantly to NO3-concentrations in residential land during the wet (74.9%) and dry seasons (67.6%). For croplands, soil nitrogen emerged as a dominant source during the wet season (42.2%), while chemical fertilizers prevailed in the dry season (38.7%). In addition to source variations, the nitrate concentration of groundwater is further affected by hydrogeological conditions, with more permeable aquifers tending to display higher nitrate concentrations. Thus, targeted measures were proposed to modify or impede the nitrogen migration pathway, taking into consideration hydrogeological conditions and incorporating domestic sewage, organic fertilizer, and agricultural management practices.
Health risk analysis of nitrate in groundwater in Shanxi Province, China: a case study of the Datong Basin

Abstract:To find out the impact of NO3− pollution in shallow groundwater on human health of different sexes and ages. On the basis of investigation, sampling, analysis and testing, statistical analysis software (SPSS19), groundwater pollution analysis software, Nemera comprehensive index method, correlation analysis method and human health risk assessment model are applied for analysis and research. The results indicate that the groundwater in the study area is mainly Class II water, with overall good water quality. The main influencing factors for producing Class IV are NO3−, Fe, F− and SO42−. The use of agricultural fertilizers is the main source of NO3− exceeding standards in groundwater in this area. There are significant differences in the health hazards caused by NO3− pollution in groundwater among different populations, and infants and young children are more susceptible to nitrate pollution. The division of pollution areas and high-risk groups plays an important guiding role in preventing health risks. The new achievements will help people improve their awareness of risk prevention, caring for the environment, respecting nature and implementing precise policies, promoting society to step onto the track of scientific and healthy development.

Abstract:Nitrate pollution in aquatic ecosystems has received growing concern, particularly in fragile karst basins. In this study, hydrochemical compositions, multiple stable isotopes (δ 2 H–H 2 O, δ 18 Ο–Η 2 Ο, δ 15 Ν–ΝΟ 3 − , and δ 18 Ο–ΝΟ 3 − ), and Bayesian stable isotope mixing model (MixSIAR) were applied to elucidate nitrate pollution sources in groundwater of the Yangzhuang Basin. The Durov diagram identified the dominant groundwater chemical face as Ca–HCO 3 type. The NO 3 − concentration ranged from 10.89 to 90.45 mg/L (average 47.34 mg/L), showing an increasing trend from the upstream forest and grassland to the downstream agricultural dominant area. It is worth noting that 47.2% of groundwater samples exceeded the NO 3 − threshold value of 50 mg/L for drinking water recommended by the World Health Organization. The relationship between NO 3 − /Cl − and Cl − ratios suggested that most groundwater samples were located in nitrate mixed endmember from agricultural input, soil organic nitrogen, and manure & sewage. The Self-Organizing Map (SOM) and Pearson correlations analysis further indicated that the application of calcium fertilizer, sodium fertilizer, and livestock and poultry excrement in farmland elevated NO 3 − level in groundwater. The output results of the MixSIAR model showed that the primary sources of NO 3 − in groundwater were soil organic nitrogen (55.3%), followed by chemical fertilizers (28.5%), sewage & manure (12.7%), and atmospheric deposition (3.4%). Microbial nitrification was a dominant nitrogen conversion pathway elevating NO 3 − levels in groundwater, while the denitrification can be neglectable across the study area. The human health risk assessment (HHRA) model identified that about 88.9%, 77.8%, 72.2%, and 50.0% of groundwater samples posing nitrate's non-carcinogenic health hazards (HQ > 1) through oral intake for infants, children, females, and males, respectively. The findings of this study can offer useful biogeochemical information on nitrogen pollution in karst groundwater to support sustainable groundwater management in similar human-affected karst regions.

Abstract:Elucidating the hydrogeochemical processes and quality assessment of groundwater holds significant importance for its sustainable development. In this paper, 53 groundwater samples were collected from a typical agricultural area in the northeastern Chongqing municipality in SW China. The integration of multivariate statistical analysis, ion ratio analysis, geomodelling analysis, the entropy water quality index, health risks assessment, and sensitivity analysis was carried out to explore the hydrochemical processes and quality assessment of groundwater in this study. The statistical results reveal that the cationic concentrations followed the order of Ca2+ > Mg2+ > Na+ > K+, while the anionic components were in the order of HCO3− > SO42− > NO3− > Cl−. Based on the Piper trilinear diagram, the hydrochemical types were shown as Ca-HCO3 and Ca-Mg-HCO3 types. Hierarchical cluster analysis indicated that the groundwater samples could be categorized into three groups. The hydrochemical compositions were primarily influenced by water–rock interactions (e.g., carbonate dissolution and silicate weathering). In terms of irrigation suitability, the sodium adsorption ratios (SARs) ranged from 0.05 to 1.82, and the electrical conductivity (EC) varied from 116 to 1094 μs/cm, indicating that most groundwater samples were suitable for irrigation. The entropy-weighted water quality index ranged from 15 to 94, suggesting that the groundwater samples were suitable for drinking purposes. Non-carcinogenic human health risks followed the order of children > adult females > adult males, within the average values of 0.30, 0.21, and 0.18, respectively. Sensitivity analysis showed that the parameters had the weight order of NO3 > body weight (BW) > ingestion rate (IR) > exposure frequency (EF). Hence, we recommend prioritizing the management of areas with high salinity levels, while avoiding the excessive use of nitrogen fertilizers, raising awareness among local residents about safe groundwater, and providing robust support for the sustainable development of groundwater in typical agricultural areas.

Abstract:In this study, the hydrochemical characteristics of groundwater were assessed based on 64 shallow groundwater samples collected in the Guanzhong Basin, China, and the health risk of nitrate (NO 3 - ) in drinking water was assessed. In addition, the spatial distributions of major water quality indicators were investigated, while bivariate plots, saturation index, and stable isotopes were used to reveal the processes controlling groundwater hydrogeochemistry. The results showed that groundwater in the study area was mostly fresh water. However, the maximum and average NO 3 – concentrations were 397.0 and 92.9 mg/L, respectively, indicating serious groundwater NO 3 – pollution. The percolation of contaminated river water exhibited considerable impacts on groundwater quality. Carbonate dissolution was the major process controlling the hydrochemical characteristics of groundwater, while human activities were responsible for the high concentrations of groundwater pollutants, especially NO 3 – . Evaporation fraction of groundwater in the study area revealed by stable hydrogen and oxygen isotopes ranged from 4 to 13% and 4 to 11%, respectively. High non-carcinogenic health risks of NO 3 – to adults and children were observed in about 46.88 and 75% of the collected groundwater samples, respectively. The risk value ranges were 0-6.00 and 0-14.06, with average values of 1.36 and 3.19, for adults and children, respectively.

Abstract:Abstract Nitrate contamination is a common problem in groundwater of the North China Plain (NCP) owing to overuse of fertilizers and discharge of wastewater. Accordingly, it is important to investigate nitrate contamination in recharge areas to understand the fate of nitrate in the plains area. In this study, the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of nitrate and factors contributing to its sources and transformation in shallow groundwater of the Beiyishui River watershed, NCP, were analysed by a combination of multiple regression and multi‐tracer methods. The nitrate concentration of 79% of the samples exceeded the natural environmental standard of 13.3 mg l −1 , while that of 23% of the samples exceeded the World Health Organization (WHO) drinking water standard of 50 mg l −1 . Groundwater age estimation of the hill regions based on chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) revealed a mix of young water from 1982 to 1990 and old, low CFC water. The analysis based on the variations in land use in past years revealed that part of the grassland was converted into woodland between 1980 and 1995; therefore, the land use at the recharge time was used to determine which surface conditions influence groundwater nitrate concentrations. Multiple regression analysis showed that point source pollution contributed to the high concentration of nitrate in the hill region. Fertilizer application associated with land use change from grassland to woodland was also related to the present nitrate concentration. In the plains area, the contribution of fresh water from fault fractures and denitrification led to 31 to 72% and 6 to 51% reductions in nitrate concentrations, respectively. Our results suggested that controlling point source contamination and fertilizer input to hilly regions of the study will prevent groundwater of the plains area from deterioration in future years by mixing fresh water into the aquifers and decreasing denitrification, and therefore nitrate concentrations. Abstract:High nitrogen concentration of groundwater poses a threat to human health. This study evaluated the potential health risk of nitrogen pollution in Yinchuan plain by geostatistical analysis and triangular stochastic model considering different land use types, and identified the uncertainties of the parameters. 163 samples were collected from groundwater wells in different land use types. The results show that the concentration of NO3−-N ranges from 0.059 to 450 mg/L, with an average of 22.439 mg/L. Approximately 32% of the samples exceed Grade III threshold (20 mg/L of N). The concentration of NH4+-N ranges from 0.011 to 11 mg/L, with an average of 0.456 mg/L. The concentration of NO2−-N ranges from 0.003 to 9.09 mg/L The NO3−-N and NH4+-N concentration in the groundwater of the unutilized land use is significantly lowest among all the land types. The concentration of nitrogen is highest in farmland use. The ranking of non-carcinogenic risk under different land types for infants, children, adult males and females is: farmland use > residential land use> unutilized land use. The non-carcinogenic risk value of farmland use is three times as much as that of the residential land use. Drinking groundwater can be potentially harmful to human health, and nitrogen pollutants pose an even greater threat to infant. At the same time, considering the impact of different land use types on groundwater would avoid overestimating or underestimating regional risk value. Triangular stochastic model is more sensitive to data changes and can reduce uncertainty. The contribution rate of nitrate concentration to risk is more than 83%, indicating that random sampling is needed to improve the reliability of evaluation results. The research results of this study will provide a new way to solve the uncertainty in groundwater security management.

Abstract:Assessing groundwater geochemical formation processes and pollution circumstances is significant for sustainable watershed management. In the present study, 58 shallow groundwater samples were taken from the Dongwen River Basin (DRB) to comprehensively assess the hydrochemical sources, groundwater quality status, and potential risks of NO 3 – to human health. Based on the Box and Whisker plot, the cation's concentration followed the order of Ca 2+ > Mg 2+ > Na + > K + , while anions' mean levels were HCO 3 − > SO 4 2− > NO 3 − > Cl − . The NO 3 − level in groundwater samples fluctuated between 4.2 and 301.3 mg/L, with 67.2% of samples beyond the World Health Organization (WHO) criteria (50 mg/L) for drinking. The Piper diagram indicated the hydrochemical type of groundwater and surface water were characterized as Ca·Mg-HCO 3 type. Combining ionic ratio analysis with principal component analysis (PCA) results, agricultural activities contributed a significant effect on groundwater NO 3 − , with soil nitrogen input and manure/sewage inputs also potential sources. However, geogenic processes (e.g., carbonates and evaporite dissolution/precipitation) controlled other ion compositions in the study area. The groundwater samples with higher NO 3 − values were mainly found in river valley regions with intense anthropogenic activities. The entropy weight water quality index (EWQI) model identified that the groundwater quality rank ranged from excellent (70.7%) and good (25.9%) to medium (3.4%). However, the hazard quotient (HQ) used in the human health risk assessment (HHRA) model showed that above 91.38% of groundwater samples have a NO 3 − non-carcinogenic health risk for infants, 84.48% for children, 82.76% for females, and 72.41% for males. The findings of this study could provide a scientific basis for the rational development and usage of groundwater resources as well as for the preservation of the inhabitants' health in DRB.

Abstract:In this study, the formation mechanism and water quality of groundwater in the northwest of Nansi Lake Catchment (NNLC) were analyzed through mathematical statistics, hydrochemical analysis and entropy weighted water quality index (EWQI), and the human health risk of nitrate was also evaluated. To this end, 89 wells in the NNLC were sampled, and the groundwater samples were divided into three groups (I, II, and III) according to cluster analysis results and spatial distribution. The main results are as follows: Topographically, Groups I, II, and III correspond to the alluvial plains, apron plain, and low hills and its front margin, respectively. According to the Piper diagram, the hydrochemical types of Groups I and II groundwater are Na–SO4·Cl and Ca·Mg–HCO3, respectively, and that of Group III is more concentrated, mostly corresponding to the Ca–HCO3 type. Hydrochemical analysis indicated that the development of groundwater hydrochemistry is mainly attributable to water–rock interactions, with the primary process being the dissolution of minerals such as calcite, dolomite, gypsum, and albite. Evaporation exhibited an increasing trend from the northeast to the southwest. Groups I and III presented obvious effects of human activities, with Group I showing sulfate pollution and Group III mainly showing nitrate pollution. Analysis of the characteristics and causes of the groundwater hydrochemistry revealed the proposed approach has excellent performance for classification in areas with complex hydrogeological conditions. The results of EWQI showed that the overall water quality was good, following the order Group III > Group II > Group I. The overall human health risk of nitrate in groundwater was low, but the risk was slightly higher for children than for adults. Therefore, the effects of nitrate contamination should be considered when exploiting hilly and peri-urban groundwater for drinking water.
