Abstract:Model predictive control technology has brought huge benefit in the refining/petrochemical industry and starts to attract attention of other process industries. However, sustainability is a big challenge in MPC applications due to its technical difficulties and high cost in human resources. In order to considerably reduce the difficulties and costs of MPC deployment and maintenance, we introduce an adaptive MPC controller. The adaptive MPC consists of three modules: an MPC control module, an online identification module and a control monitor module. The three modules work together coherently in real-time. During MPC commissioning, the online identification module and the MPC control module work together and perform various steps in MPC implementation automatically. When the MPC controller is online, the control monitor module continuously monitors the MPC performance and model quality. When control performance degradation and considerable model error are detected, monitor module will start the maintenance by activating the online identification module. The identification module will re-identify the model and replace the old model. Most of the steps can be done automatically under the supervision of the operator. The scarce control expert is only needed in controller design. A prototype of the adaptive MPC controller has applied successfully to two PTA units and the results will be reported.
Real-time Regulation of Detention Ponds via Feedback Control: Balancing Flood Mitigation and Water Quality

Abstract:Detention ponds can mitigate flooding and improve water quality by allowing the settlement of pollutants. Typically, they are operated with fully open orifices and weirs (i.e., passive control). Active controls can improve the performance of these systems: orifices can be retrofitted with controlled valves and spillways can have controllable gates. The real-time optimal operation of its hydraulic devices can be achieved with techniques such as Model Predictive Control (MPC). A distributed quasi-2D hydrologic-hydrodynamic coupled with a reservoir flood routing model is developed and integrated with an MPC algorithm to estimate the operation of valves and movable gates. The control optimization problem is adapted to switch from a flood-related algorithm focusing on mitigating floods to a heuristic objective function that aims to increase the detention time when no inflow hydrographs are predicted. The case studies show the potential of applying the methods developed in a catchment in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The performance of MPC compared to alternatives with either fully or partially open valves and gates are tested. Comparisons with HEC-RAS 2D indicate volume and peak flow errors of approximately 1.4% and 0.91% for the watershed module. Simulating two consecutive 10-year storms shows that the MPC strategy can achieve peak flow reductions of 79%. In contrast, passive control has nearly half of the performance. A 1-year continuous simulation results show that the passive scenario with 25% of the valves opened can treat 12% more runoff compared to the developed MPC approach, with an average detention time of approximately 6 hours. For the MPC approach, the average detention time is nearly 14 hours indicating that both control techniques can treat similar volumes; however, the proxy water quality for the MPC approach is enhanced due to the longer detention times.

Abstract:Wastewater treatment is a complex biochemical reaction with strong nonlinearity,coupling and uncertainty.In this paper,a fuzzy adaptive generalized predictive control(GPC) is proposed for wastewater treatment benchmark based on the activated sludge model No.1(ASM1).The predictive model (is obtained) by using fuzzy adaptive identification,which can improve the accuracy of the model.The(results) of simulation demonstrate that the proposed control strategy can effectively ensure effluent water quality.

Abstract:Current generation of industrial MPC technology has two main disadvantages: 1) it is very costly to implement and to maintain an MPC system; 2) the performance in disturbance reduction is low. To solve these two problems, an adaptive MPC technology is introduced. It consists of three modules, a Control Module, an Identification Module and a Monitor Module. It can perform various steps of an MPC project automatically and in a parallel manner. Thus, the efficiency of MPC commissioning and maintenance can be increased by a factor of 3 or more. In the MPC Control Module, an adaptive disturbance model is used to improve control performance and robustness. A prototype of the adaptive MPC system has been applied successfully to a PTA unit. Due to its simplicity and user friendliness, this technology may change the way MPC is applied and can make MPC feasible for all process industries, not just the refining/petrochemical industry. Recent tests have shown that the adaptive disturbance model can increase control performance considerably. A traditional adaptive MPC controller performs sample-wise identification and adaptation of both process models and disturbance models without monitoring the test condition and model quality. The new adaptive MPC system is very different from the traditional adaptive control: the process model is adapted on demand (when activated by the Monitor Module) where test signals are used in model identification; the disturbance model is adapted sample-wise without using test signals. We believe that this new scheme is more adequate for the control of large scale industrial processes than the traditional adaptive controller.

Abstract:A PDE‐constrained MPC algorithm for open‐channel systems with state and control constraints is proposed. The adjoint equations are derived using the calculus of variations, enabling gradient computation for MPC optimization. A gradient‐based optimization algorithm is employed with the Preissmann implict scheme for solving the constrained MPC problem. A PDE‐constrained model predictive control (MPC) algorithm for open‐channel systems based on the Saint‐Vevant(S‐V) equations is investigated in this paper. The S‐V equations, which precisely model the dynamics of open‐channel systems, are quasi‐linear hyperbolic partial differential equations (PDEs) without analytical solutions. Directly applying the S‐V equations to an MPC controller design becomes sophisticated. In this work, the calculus of variation is used to obtain the adjoint equations and the adjoint analysis method is utilized to deduce the gradients of the MPC optimization problem. Particularly, the physical constraints involving both the state and control variables are also considered. A gradient‐based optimization algorithm in combination with the numerical computation of Preissmann implicit scheme is proposed to solve the constrained MPC optimization problem. The control performances of the developed PDE‐constrained MPC algorithm with respect to the controlled water levels and gate openings are compared with those of the MPC controller designed for the linearized model. All the simulation tests are carried out on an aqueduct reach in Yehe Irrigation District in Hebei Province, China. The results show that the proposed PDE‐constrained MPC algorithm is a promising method in dealing with the constraints in terms of hyperbolic PDEs, control variables and state variables simultaneously.

Abstract:The application of automatic control to irrigation canals is an important means of improving the efficiency of water delivery. The Middle Route Project (MRP) for South-to-North Water Transfer, the largest water transfer project in China, is currently under manual control. Given the complexity of the MRP, there is an urgent need to adopt some form of automatic control. This paper describes the application of model predictive control (MPC), a popular real time control algorithm particularly suited to the automatic control of multi-pool irrigation water delivery systems, to the MRP using a linear control model. This control system is tested in part of the MRP by means of numerical simulations. The results show that the control system can deal with both known and unknown disturbances, albeit with a degree of resonance in some short pools. However, it takes a long time for the MRP to reach a stable state under the MPC system and the calculation time for the whole MRP network would be too long to satisfy the requirements of real-time control. Suggestions are presented for the construction of an automatic control system for the MRP.

Abstract:Agricultural irrigation accounts for the largest proportion of freshwater use worldwide, and canal automation potentially improves conveyance efficiency in irrigation canal systems. In this paper, model predictive control (MPC) for a cascaded irrigation canal system was formulated using the integrator-delay model. Magnitude and variation amplitude constraints on input and output imposed on the canal operation were identified along with proposed handling methods, and optimal control actions were achieved by quadratic objective function optimization. The MPC, as well as classical proportional-integral (PI) and centralized linear quadratic (LQ) for comparison, were developed for the Changma South Irrigation District cascaded irrigation canals in Gansu Province (China) and numerically tested via SOBEK software. In contrast to the poor performance of PI and LQ in controlling the studied canal, the results show that MPC can efficiently control the canal system under known demand changes and maintain water levels at control points within the operating range. The control performance improves if normal input and output constraints are incorporated in optimization. However, deadband constraints, which is the minimum variation amplitude of input, cause controlled water levels to oscillate around the reference value and degrade the control performance. In summary, MPC can cope with time delays, coupling effects, and constraints inherent in a cascaded irrigation canals system. Furthermore, it is suggested to evaluate more advanced methods for handling the output and deadband constraints in future studies.

Abstract:In the context of global climate change and urbanization, model predictive control (MPC) has been increasingly applied in the field of real-time control of urban drainage systems to cope with frequent urban flooding events caused by extreme rainstorms. However, the computation time of the predictive model calculation greatly hinders further development of MPC in this field. In this study, we propose two surrogate models, namely the water tank-water balance model 1 (TWBM1) and the water tank-water balance model 2 (TWBM2), to replace the storm water management model (SWMM) as the prediction model for MPC, thus improving MPC computational efficiency. Both surrogate models can obtain the total outflow process at the downstream outfall of the study area and the corresponding overflow process. In comparison with TWBM1, TWBM2 requires 26 % fewer calibration parameters, and its structure is simpler. These results have been verified in the real-time optimal scheduling of a rainwater drainage system in the Doumen area of Fuzhou City, China. The results show that TWBM1 and TWBM2 have shorter computation time compared to SWMM, which improves the efficiency of MPC computation. Additionally, in comparison with the existing scheduling results, MPC has better performance in terms of economy, security and computational efficiency.

Abstract:Model Predictive Control (MPC) has the potential to enhance flood control in urban river systems. However, the computational burden of online optimization hinders the application of MPC to large-scale areas. To address this, we propose a method incorporating both Rules-Based Control (RBC) and MPC based on surrogate models. MPC optimizes the operation of gates and pumping stations in the area of interest, while RBC is implemented in a specific region that does not participate in online optimization, thereby reducing calculation time. We have successfully validated this approach in coastal urban river systems in China, reducing the decision variables from 109 to 24 and narrowing the simulation area from 165 km 2 to 15 km 2 . During the Typhoon Lupit rainfall test, the total computation time and the highest online optimization time were only 33.9 % and 38.1 % of the full MPC system, respectively. Additionally, the method demonstrated impressive results, including a significant 94.62 % reduction in flood volume and a remarkable 96.5 % decrease in flood duration. These findings demonstrate that our method effectively addresses the challenge of long computation times for online optimization in urban river systems and presents a novel approach for implementing urban flood mitigation strategies.

Economic Model Predictive Control of Water Distribution Systems with Accelerated Optimization Algorithm

Abstract:Model predictive control (MPC) has emerged as an effective strategy for water distribution systems (WDSs) management. However, it is hampered by the computational burden for large-scale WDSs due to the combinatorial growth of possible control actions that must be evaluated at each time step. Therefore, a fast computation algorithm to implement MPC in WDSs can be obtained using a move-blocking approach that simplifies control decisions while ensuring solution feasibility. This paper introduces a least-restrictive move-blocking that interpolates the blocked control rate of change, aiming at balancing computational efficiency with operational effectiveness. The proposed control strategy is demonstrated on aggregated WDSs, encompassing multiple hydraulic elements. This implementation is incorporated into a multi-objective optimization framework that concurrently optimizes water level security of the storage tanks, smoothness of the control actions, and cost-effective objectives. A fair comparison between the proposed approach with the non-blocking Economic MPC is provided.

Abstract:Model Predictive Control (MPC) is an optimal control strategy suited for flood control of water resources infrastructure. Despite many studies on reservoir flood control and their theoretical contribution, optimisation methodologies have not been widely applied in real-time operation due to disparities between research assumptions and practical requirements. First, tacit objectives such as minimising the magnitude and frequency of changes in the existing outflow schedule are considered important in practice, but these are nonlinear and challenging to formulate to suit all conditions. Incorporating these objectives transforms the problem into a multi-objective nonlinear optimisation problem that is difficult to solve online. Second, it is reasonable to assume that the weights and parameters are not stationary because the preference varies depending on the state of the system. To overcome these limitations, we propose a framework that converts the original intractable problem into parameterized linear MPC problems with dynamic optimisation of weights and parameters. This is done by introducing a model-based learning concept under the assumption of the dynamic nature of the operator's preference. We refer to this framework as Parameterised Dynamic MPC (PD-MPC). The effectiveness of this framework is demonstrated through a numerical experiment for the Daecheong multipurpose reservoir in South Korea. We find that PD-MPC outperforms `standard' MPC-based designs without a dynamic optimisation process under the same uncertain inflows.

Abstract:Real-time control of hydroelectric generating units and floodgates is the key to ensuring the economy and safety of hydroelectric production. Runoff hydropower plants require high real-time control accuracy because of the small regulation interval. The existing real-time control methods have certain shortcomings such as frequent load and gate adjustments and a wide range of water level fluctuations. Therefore, we propose a data-driven and physics-based coupled real-time model predictive control (MPC) method with the aim to develop a highly accurate control strategy. Compared to the traditional MPC model, the model proposed in this study presents three major improvements: (1) the data-driven and physics-based coupled model enhances the accuracy of water level prediction; (2) the corresponding decision framework is developed for the actual operation of the power station to reduce the decision space; and (3) a feedback correction mechanism that can convert the water level prediction error into flow error, which reflects the time-varying nature of the system. We demonstrate that the coupled prediction model combined with feedback correction improves the water level prediction accuracy by 60% on average. Moreover, the reduced decision space enables the optimization algorithm to reduce the optimization time by 83% on average and achieve a globally optimal solution in the decision space. The proposed data-driven and physics-based coupled real-time MPC method is thus useful for the real-time regulation of run-of-river power plants.

Abstract:In this paper, automatic control of the water level in an irrigation canal by automatic regulation of intermediate gates was studied. Previous scholars have proposed a water level difference control strategy that works to keep relative deviations in all pools the same for a particular situation where the operator does not have full control over the canal inflow, with the centralized linear quadratic regulator (LQR) control method used. While in practice, the deviation tolerance of pools may differ in some canals which limits the applicability of the control strategy. In this work, a weight coefficient was added to the deviation and the algorithm was improved to keep the relative deviations to certain proportions. The model predictive control (MPC) method was then used with this improved control strategy and was compared to the LQR control method using the same control strategy. The results showed that the improved strategy can keep the water level deviations in all pools to certain proportions, as is our objective. Also, under this difference control strategy, the MPC method greatly improved the control performance compared to the LQR control method.
How Effective is Model Predictive Control in Real-Time Water Quality Regulation? State-Space Modeling and Scalable Control

Abstract:Real-time water quality control (WQC) in water distribution networks (WDN), the problem of regulating disinfectant levels, is challenging due to lack of (i) a proper control-oriented modeling considering complicated components (junctions, reservoirs, tanks, pipes, pumps, and valves) for water quality modeling in WDN and (ii) a corresponding scalable control algorithm that performs real-time water quality regulation. In this paper, we solve the WQC problem by (a) proposing a novel state-space representation of the WQC problem that provides an explicit relationship between inputs (chlorine dosage at booster stations) and states/outputs (chlorine concentrations in the entire network) and (b) designing a highly scalable model predictive control (MPC) algorithm that showcases fast response time and resilience against some sources of uncertainty.

Abstract:An optimization model of a stormwater pond is developed to improve the performance of the system in terms of water quantity and quality. Nowadays, stormwater management systems play an important role in mitigating the impacts of urbanization on the natural hydrological cycle. These systems can be managed in such a way that they meet smart city needs. An automated dynamically managed system that can adapt itself to ever-changing environmental conditions can be modeled using a mathematical optimization approach. Hence, a Predictive Real-Time Control (PRTC) approach is proposed in this paper to optimize the performance of stormwater management basins in terms of minimizing hydraulic shocks during wet periods. Then some generalized rules are designed to control the sedimentation of trapped water in the pond during dry periods to improve the quality of water discharged to the receiving stream. The combination of these two approaches provides a real-time improved performance in comparison to the static strategy.

Abstract:Model predictive control (MPC) is an effective real-time control method in dealing with water level deviations in canal pools. However, the control interval must be relatively small if some canal pools have short time delay characteristics, resulting in frequent gate control and limited use in practical engineering. In this paper, control interval constraint and water level soft constraint methods were proposed to handle frequent gate control problems in MPC. The MPC method with these constraint methods was tested on a simulation model of the Beijing–Shijiazhuang part of the Middle Route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project (MRP) with two kinds of disturbances common to this project. The results indicate that the control interval constraint can increase the gate control interval and avoid back-and-forth gate opening adjustments without affecting the water level regulation. The water level constraint helps avoid unnecessary control to minor water level deviations. With both constraints used together, the control times can be reduced by 60% and 37%, respectively, in the two test disturbances. This control method meets the demand of large control intervals in multi-cascade pools.

Abstract:The integration of green‐gray infrastructures with advanced control approaches is revolutionizing the stormwater system retrofitting, emerging as an innovative strategy to mitigate urban flood risks. However, a major challenge lies in balancing the substantial investments of these infrastructure projects with their environmental benefits, such as reduced flooding volume and lower peak flow. Model predictive control (MPC), a dynamic and intelligent control approach, optimizes these environmental benefits but is underutilized in the system design phase for cost‐effectiveness analysis. This study introduces a multi‐scenario model framework that incorporates MPC and other control approaches into stormwater system designs, including the implementation of controlled storage tanks and green infrastructures. This framework provides comprehensive modeling tools for practitioners to evaluate the flood control benefits and costs across various infrastructure designs and control scenarios, ultimately identifying solutions that are both environmentally and economically viable. A case study conducted in a small urban catchment area in Shenzhen City, China, demonstrates the effectiveness of this framework. The results indicate that MPC outperforms other control scenarios, particularly under heavy or extreme rainfall conditions. Notably, MPC not only provides superior environmental benefits but also yields considerable cost savings, ranging from 1,787 to 9,371 USD per hectare compared to static control, equating to a 5% reduction in cost relative to rule‐based control. Such findings suggest that integrating MPC is a cost‐effective alternative to extensive infrastructure expansion for flood management, which significantly enhances the benefit contribution of controlled infrastructures without substantial additional expenses.

Abstract:The emergency control of Menglou~Qifang inverted siphon, which is about 72 km long, is the key to the safety of the Northern Hubei Water Transfer Project. Given the complicated layout of this project, traditional emergency control method has been challenged with the fast hydraulic transient characteristics of pressurized flow. This paper describes the application of model predictive control (MPC), a popular automatic control algorithm advanced in explicitly accounting for various constraints and optimizing control operation, in emergency condition. For the fast prediction to the pipe-canal combination system, a linear model for large-scale inverted siphon proposed by the latest research and the integrator-delay (ID) model for open canals are used. Simulation results show that the proposed MPC algorithm has promising performance on guaranteeing the safety of the project when there are sudden flow obstruction incidents of varying degrees downstream. Compared with control groups, the peak pressure can be reduced by 17.2 m by MPC under the most critical scenario, albeit with more complicated gates operations and more water release (up to 9.75 × 104 m3). Based on the linear model for long inverted siphon, this work highlights the applicability of MPC in the emergency control of large-scale pipe-canal combination system.

Abstract:Urban flooding resulting from severe rainstorms is an increasing challenge for cities worldwide due to climate change and rapid urbanization. Model predictive control (MPC) has emerged as a promising approach for real-time management of urban drainage systems to mitigate flooding impacts. However, existing MPC research often relies on idealized rainfall forecasts without adequately accounting for forecast uncertainty, which can compromise the effectiveness of MPC strategies. This study aims to address this critical research gap by developing a framework to evaluate the impacts of forecast uncertainty on MPC performance for urban drainage management. The framework consists of 3 components, (1) martingale model of forecast evolution based on Langevin dynamics for generating rainfall data under different uncertainty conditions (2) MPC, which accepts the rainfall inputs and obtains the real-time control results under different uncertainty conditions and (3) the Scheduling Performance Indicator module, which performs a systematic evaluation of the real-time control system. Using a case study of the Doumen region in Fuzhou City, the results reveal two key findings: First, MPC performance remains close to optimal when forecast uncertainty levels are between 0.1 and 0.3, but deteriorates significantly at uncertainty levels from 0.3 to 0.5. Second, while the MPC error feedback module can occasionally degrade performance for individual events, its overall impact is beneficial in reducing performance deviation risks.
