Abstract:Tunable coupled mechanical resonators with nonequilibrium dynamic phenomena have attracted considerable attention in quantum simulations, quantum computations, and non-Hermitian systems. In this study, we propose tunable mechanical-mode coupling based on nanobeam-double optomechanical cavities. The excited optical mode interacts with both symmetric and antisymmetric mechanical supermodes and mediates coupling at a frequency of approximately 4.96 GHz. The mechanical-mode coupling is tuned through both optical spring and gain effects, and the reduced coupled frequency difference in non-Hermitian parameter space is observed. These results benefit research on the microscopic mechanical parity–time symmetry for topology and on-chip high-sensitivity sensors.

Abstract:We analyze transmission characteristics of two coupled identical cavities, of either standing-wave (SW) or traveling-wave (TW) type, based on temporal coupled mode theory. Mode splitting is observed for both directly (cavity-cavity) and indirectly (cavity-waveguide-cavity) coupled cavity systems. The effects of direct and indirect couplings, if coexisting in one system, can offset each other such that no mode splitting occurs and the original single-cavity resonant frequency is retained. By tuning the configuration of the coupled cavity system, one can obtain different characteristics in transmission spectra, including splitting in transmission, zero transmission, Fano-type transmission, electromagnetically-induced-transparency (EIT)-like transmission, and electromagnetically-induced-absorption (EIA)-like transmission. It is also interesting to notice that a side-coupled SW cavity system performs similarly to an under-coupled TW cavity. Heisenberg-limited Estimation of the Coupling Rate in an Optomechanical System with a Two-Level System

Abstract:We theoretically investigate the high-precision estimation of the coupling rate, which can reflect an actual observable, in a hybrid optomechanical system (OMS). In our scheme, apart from an optical cavity, the mechanical vibrator is also coupled to a two-level system (TLS) via a direct dispersive coupling. As for the initial state, we take into account coherent states for both optical and mechanical modes. After evolving a period of the vibrator, the final state then carries the information about the estimated coupling rate. We find that through measuring the internal state of the TLS, the precision can achieve a Heisenberg limit that indicates remarkable improvement of estimation in quantum metrology. This result is obviously shown in a simple analytical expression under the approximate condition, and further analysis demonstrates that the Heisenberg limit can be attained indeed. Moreover, we also study the dependence of the precision on the estimated parameter to reveal the appropriate measurement ranges.
Beating the standard quantum limit for force sensing with a coupled two-mode optomechanical system

Abstract:Optomechanics allows the transduction of weak forces to optical fields, with many efforts approaching the standard quantum limit. We consider force-sensing using a mirror-in-the-middle setup and use two coupled cavity modes originated from normal mode splitting for separating pump and probe fields. We find that this two-mode model can be reduced to an effective single-mode model, if we drive the pump mode strongly and detect the signal from the weak probe mode. The optimal force detection sensitivity at zero frequency (DC) is calculated and we show that one can beat the standard quantum limit by driving the cavity close to instability. The best sensitivity achievable is limited by mechanical thermal noise and by optical losses. We also find that the bandwidth where optimal sensitivity is maintained is proportional to the cavity damping in the resolved sideband regime. Finally, the squeezing spectrum of the output signal is calculated, and it shows almost perfect squeezing at DC is possible by using a high quality factor and low thermal phonon-number mechanical oscillator.

Abstract:The mode profile of a coupled optical cavity often exhibits a resonant doublet, which arises from the strong coupling between its subcavities. Traditional readout methods rely on setting fields of different frequencies to be resonant in either subcavity, which is challenging in the case of strong coupling. In this regime, the coupled cavity behaves as a single resonator, and a field must be resonant in all its parts. Consequently, specialized sensing schemes are necessary to control strongly coupled cavities. To address this issue, we propose a novel technique for the relative measurement of the degrees of freedom of a strongly coupled cavity. Our approach enables simultaneous frequency stabilization and fine-tuning of frequency splitting in the resonant doublet. Overall, our proposed technique offers a promising solution to control the properties of coupled cavities, facilitating advanced applications in the fields of gravitational-wave detection, quantum cavity optomechanics, and other related areas. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.109.022010 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:We study entanglement of the cavity modes in a double-cavity optomechanical system in strong-coupling regime. The system consists of two optomechanical systems coupled by a single photon hopping between them. With the radiation pressure of the photon, entanglement of the cavity modes can be generated. The concurrence between the cavity modes is at least twice larger than that between the mechanical modes. Moreover, when we change the ratio between coupling strength and resonant frequency of mechanical modes, the entanglement in cavity and mechanical modes are influenced differently.

Abstract:We propose a realistic system with separated optical and mechanical degrees of freedom, in which a high-mechanical-quality silicon nitride membrane is placed upon a high-optical-quality whispering gallery microcavity. The strongly enhanced linear optomechanical coupling, together with simultaneously low optical and mechanical losses in the present system, results in a remarkable single-photon cooperativity exceeding 300. This unprecedented cooperativity in the optomechanical system enables optical nonlinearity at low light intensities and holds great potential in generating, storing, and implementing quantum states. Moreover, the device gives rise to significantly stronger quadratic optomechanical coupling than achieved to date, which is desirable for measuring phonon shot noise with a high signal-to-noise ratio.
Optical cavity characterization with a mode-matched heterodyne sensing scheme

Abstract:We describe a technique for measuring the complex reflectivity of an optical cavity with a resonant local oscillator laser and an auxiliary probe laser, each coupled via opposite ends of the cavity. A heterodyne sensing scheme is then used to observe the phase and amplitude of the interference beat-note between the promptly reflected field and the cavity transmitted field injected through the far mirror. Since the local oscillator laser must pass through the cavity before interfering with the probe laser these measurements are not only independent of the spatial coupling of either laser to the cavity, but also obtained at the in-situ position of the cavity Eigenmode. This technique was demonstrated on a 19 m cavity to measure the individual transmissivities of each of the mirrors as well as the round trip optical losses to an accuracy of several parts per million.

Probe Response of a Cavity-Optomechanical System Coupling to a Frequency-Dependent Bath

Abstract:We investigate the probe response of a cavity-optomechanical system with its mechanical oscillator coupling to a bosonic bath characterized by the Ohmic spectrum density. By employing the spectrum decomposition scheme, we simplify the original non-Markovian equation of motion for the system and then examine the dynamics of the intracavity field. Furthermore, we work out the probe response function and simplify it further with the linear fitting method. Based on this simplification, we obtain the details of the probe spectral profile and find that the probe response changes smoothly from the optomechanically induced transparency (OMIT) regime to the normal mode splitting regime as the driving strength increases due to the lifting of frequency degeneracy of the OMIT system by the non-Markovian effect. We also find notable probe amplification under the cavity driving resonant condition. Our method can be applied to solving a non-Markovian problem in quantum optics or other fields of physics where a bath with any frequency-dependent structure must be considered.

Abstract:Cavity optomechanical systems provide powerful platforms to manipulate photons and phonons, open potential applications for modern optical communications and precise measurements. With the refrigeration and ground-state cooling technologies, studies of cavity optomechanics are making significant progress towards the quantum regime including nonclassical state preparation, quantum state tomography, quantum information processing, and future quantum internet. With further research, it is found that abundant physical phenomena and important applications in both classical and quantum regimes appeal as they have a strong optomechanical nonlinearity, which essentially depends on the single-photon optomechanical coupling strength. Thus, engineering the optomechanical interactions and improving the single-photon optomechanical coupling strength become very important subjects. In this article, we first review several mechanisms, theoretically proposed for enhancing optomechanical coupling. Then, we review the experimental progresses on enhancing optomechanical coupling by optimizing its structure and fabrication process. Finally, we review how to use novel structures and materials to enhance the optomechanical coupling strength. The manipulations of the photons and phonons at the level of strong optomechanical coupling are also summarized.

Abstract:Parametric coupling of optical and mechanical degrees of freedom forms the basis of many ultra-sensitive measurements of both force and mechanical displacement. An optical cavity with a mechanically compliant boundary enhances the optomechanical interaction, but also gives rise to qualitatively new coupled dynamics. As early as 1967, in a pioneering work, V. Braginsky analyzed theoretically the role of radiation pressure in the interferometric measurement process, but it has remained experimentally unexplored for many decades. Here, we use whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) optical microresonators to study these radiation pressure phenomena. Optical microresonators simultaneously host optical and mechanical modes, which are systematically analyzed and optimized to feature ultra-low mechanical dissipation, photon storage times exceeding the mechanical oscillation period (i.e. the "resolved-sideband regime") and large optomechanical coupling. It is demonstrated that dynamical backaction can be employed to cool mechanical modes, i.e., to reduce their thermally excited random motion. Utilizing this novel technique together with cryogenic pre-cooling of the mechanical oscillator, the phonon occupation of mechanical radial-breathing modes could be reduced to about 60 excitation quanta. The corresponding displacement fluctuations are monitored interferometrically with a sensitivity at the level of 10^-18 m/Hz^(1/2), which is below the imprecision at the standard quantum limit (SQL). It is shown that optical measurement techniques employed here are operating in a near-ideal manner according to the principles of quantum measurement, displaying a backaction-imprecision product close to the quantum limit. An outlook on optomechanical experiments with crystalline WGM resonators and the effect of "optomechanically induced transparency" (analogous to electromagnetically induced transparency) is given.

Abstract:Engineering strong single-photon optomechanical couplings is crucial for optomechanical systems. Here, we propose a hybrid quantum system consisting of a nanobeam (phonons) coupled to a spin ensemble and a cavity (photons) to overcome it. Utilizing the critical property of the lower-branch polariton (LBP) formed by the ensemble-phonon interaction, the LBP-cavity coupling can be greatly enhanced by three orders magnitude of the original one, while the upper-branch polariton (UBP)-cavity coupling is fully suppressed. Our proposal breaks through the condition of the coupling strength less than the critical value in previous schemes using two harmonic oscillators. Also, strong Kerr effect can be induced in our proposal. This shows our proposed approach can be used to study quantum nonlinear and nonclassical effects in weakly coupled optomechanical systems. Abstract:In a linear and quadratic optomechanical system with optical parametric amplifier's (OPA) phase noise, we conduct a study on normal-mode splitting, sideband cooling and force sensitivity. The system encompasses an optical cavity, a mechanical membrane and a degenerate OPA. When there is OPA's pump phase noise, normal-mode splitting still occurs and displays more complex splitting compared to scenarios without phase noise. Specifically, for increasing quadratic coupling, the left peak shrinks steadily until it vanishes, while the right peak increases to a larger value. Moreover, both the nonlinear gain of OPA and the quadratic coupling parameter play key roles in cooling the mechanical membrane in the presence of certain phase noise. Minimal phase noise and optimized values of the nonlinear gain of OPA and the quadratic coupling are essential for achieving enhanced cooling. Furthermore, in the presence of OPA's phase noise, when the value of quadratic coupling is negative, the standard quantum limit is beaten. Higher negative values of quadratic coupling prove beneficial in achieving more stable force sensitivity. We believe that in the realm of quantum optomechanics, this scheme may have viable applications in quantum manipulation and precision measurement.

Observation of mode-mixing in the eigenmodes of an optical microcavity

Abstract:We present a method to determine the complex coupling parameter of a two-coupled-modes system by directly measuring the coupled eigenmodes rather than their eigenvalues. This method is useful because mode-mixing can be observed even if frequency shifts can not be measured. It also allows to determine the complex coupling parameter, from which we conclude that the observed coupling is mainly conservative. We observe mode-mixing in an optical microcavity, where the modes couple primarily at the mirror surface, as confirmed by AFM measurements. The presented method is general and can be applied to other systems to measure mode coupling more accurately and to determine the nature of the coupling.

Single and coupled cavity mode sensing schemes using a diagnostic field

Abstract:Precise optical mode matching is of critical importance in experiments using squeezed-vacuum states. Automatic spatial-mode matching schemes have the potential to reduce losses and improve loss stability. However, in quantum-enhanced coupled-cavity experiments, such as gravitational-wave detectors, one must also ensure that the sub-cavities are also mode matched. We propose a new mode sensing scheme, which works for simple and coupled cavities. The scheme requires no moving parts, nor tuning of Gouy phases. Instead a diagnostic field tuned to the HG20/LG10 mode frequency is used. The error signals are derived to be proportional to the difference in waist position, and difference in Rayleigh ranges, between the sub-cavity eigenmodes. The two error signals are separable by 90 degrees of demodulation phase. We demonstrate reasonable error signals for a simplified Einstein Telescope optical design. This work will facilitate routine use of extremely high levels of squeezing in current and future gravitational-wave detectors.

Normal Mode Splitting and Force Sensing in Cavity Magnomechanical System

Abstract:In this study, we investigate the dynamics of system composed of a single cavity consisting of an optical parametric amplifier (OPA) and a YIG sphere influenced by a bias magnetic field. This bias field leads to magnetostrictive effects on magnon modes that induces phonons. We investigate the position fluctuation spectrum and the output field spectrum, finding that at G =0, the system displays a single peak, indicative of weak coupling between the optical and phononic modes. As G increases (e.g., G =0.1 kappa_a, 0.2 kappa_a, 0.4 kappa_a, we observe a transition to double peak, which reflects stronger coupling in the vicinity of cavity along with phonon modes that leads to normal mode splitting (NMS) in cavity magnomechanic system. Furthermore, we examine that the OPA amplifies the Y quadrature while squeezing the X quadrature of the output field spectrum. This sensitive behavior results in a more pronounced splitting in the Y quadrature spectra compared to the X quadrature. Our findings emphasize the essential role of the OPA in adjusting the interaction strength between the optical and phononic modes as well as underscore the importance of quadrature analysis in characterizing the system's response. NMS mechanism open avenues for advanced applications in quantum sensing and information processing, highlighting the potential for tunable devices in emerging quantum technologies.

Abstract:Cavity optomechanical systems provide excellent platforms for the high-precision measurement of various physical quantities. Here, we investigate the improvement of optomechanical precision measurements based on the tuning of the optomechanical interaction, which can surpass the quantum shot-noise limit without using a squeezed light source. The enhanced performance comes from the optomechanical two-mode squeezing interaction. The approach is based on the tuning of the mechanical susceptibility using optical force, which can be adjusted by controlling the laser frequency and power. For proper blue-detuned laser driving, the mechanical response to the detected signal is greatly enhanced, with improved measurement sensitivity surpassing the shot-noise limit. Moreover, for proper red-detuned laser driving, the working bandwidth can be broadened when the quantum shot noise does not dominate. Our work opens an avenue towards significant improvement to all kinds of optomechanical precision-measurement systems without stringent requirements.

Abstract:In this paper we study a system consisting of two nearly degenerate mechanical modes that couple to a single mode of an optical cavity. We show that this coupling leads to nearly complete (99.5%) hybridization of the two mechanical modes into a bright mode that experiences strong optomechanical interactions and a dark mode that experiences almost no optomechanical interactions. We use this hybridization to transfer energy between the mechanical modes with 40% efficiency.
