Abstract:We reframe Paradan-Vergne's approach to quantization commutes with reduction in KK-theory through a recent formalism introduced by Kasparov, focusing more especially the index theoretic parts that lead to their "Witten non-abelian localization formula". While our method uses the same ingredients as their's in spirit, interesting conceptual simplifications occur, and the relationship to the Ma-Tian-Zhang analytic approach becomes quite transparent.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is "whether quantization commutes with reduction" (quantization commutes with reduction). This problem was first proposed by Guillemin and Sternberg, and has attracted wide - spread interest since it was proposed, because it involves multiple fields of mathematics. In recent years, the methods to solve this problem have mainly focused on localization techniques, and these methods are deeply rooted in index theory. They can be roughly divided into two major schools:
1. **Analytic techniques**: Inspired by Witten's deformation of the de Rham complex, Tian and Zhang introduced this method in this context, and then Ma and Zhang extended this method to verify the Vergne conjecture, and Braverman systematized this method.
2. **K - theory and the transverse index of techniques**: Paradan introduced this method in this context, and then Paradan and Vergne further extended this method to deal with the Vergne conjecture on more general spin^c manifolds.
This paper proposes a method to reformulate the index - theory constructions and results used by Paradan and Vergne using the formal framework recently developed by Kasparov. Specifically, the author proves that the non - Abelian localization theorem of Paradan and Vergne is a direct consequence of Kasparov's index theorem and its natural functorial properties. This not only simplifies the concepts, but also makes the relationship between the Ma - Tian - Zhang analytic methods very transparent.
### Main contributions of the paper
- **Concept simplification**: Through Kasparov's formal framework, the paper provides a more concise conceptual framework, avoiding some complex technical steps in the Paradan and Vergne methods.
- **Unifying different methods**: The paper shows how to unify the analytic methods and topological methods through KK - theory, thus providing a more comprehensive understanding of the problem of "whether quantization commutes with reduction".
- **Directly deriving formulas**: By appropriately using the Thom isomorphism, the paper directly derives the required formulas from simple and systematic methods, without relying on complex intermediate tools.
### Technical details
- **Kasparov's index theorem**: Kasparov's index theorem provides a powerful tool to connect Atiyah's transverse analytic index with a topological index.
- **Non - Abelian localization theorem**: The non - Abelian localization theorem of Paradan and Vergne is a key step in their solution to the problem of "whether quantization commutes with reduction", and this paper proves that this theorem is a direct consequence of Kasparov's index theorem.
- **Thom isomorphism**: The paper uses the Thom isomorphism to deal with the case of non - zero β∈/Bcal⊂g*, and these isomorphisms make it possible to descend to more complex structures on the fixed - point set Mβ.
In conclusion, this paper provides a new perspective on the problem of "whether quantization commutes with reduction" through Kasparov's formal framework, which not only simplifies the existing methods, but also unifies different research approaches.
