Abstract:We show that there always exists an inscribed square in a Jordan curve given as the union of two graphs of functions of Lipschitz constant less than $1 + \sqrt{2}$. We are motivated by Tao's result that there exists such a square in the case of Lipschitz constant less than $1$. In the case of Lipschitz constant $1$, we show that the Jordan curve inscribes rectangles of every similarity class. Our approach involves analysing the change in the spectral invariants of the Jordan Floer homology under perturbations of the Jordan curve.

Abstract:We prove that a Jordan $\calc^1$-curve in the plane contains any non-flat triangle up to translation and homothety with positive ratio. This is false if the curve is not $C^1$. The proof uses a bit configuration spaces, differential and algebraic topology as well as the Schoenflies theorem. A partial generalization holds true in higher dimensions.

Abstract: By using analytic method, we prove that there exist rational curves on compact Hermitian manifolds with positive holomorphic bisectional curvature. It confirms a question of S.-T. Yau. It is well-known that Mori proved in \cite{Mori79} that every compact complex manifold $N$ with $c_1(N)>0$ contains at least one rational curve. However, as a borderline example, we show that the standard Hopf surface $S^1\times S^3$ has a Hermitian metric with non-negative holomorphic bisectional curvature (in particular, $c_1(S^1\times S^3)\geq 0$), but it contains no rational curve.

Abstract:Let $J$ be a simple closed curve in $\mathbb R^{k}$ $(k\geq2)$ that is differentiable with non-zero derivative at a point $A_0\in J$. For a tuple of positive reals $a_1,\cdots,a_n$ $(n\geq3)$, each of which is less than the sum of the others, we show that there exists a polygon $Q_n$ inscribed in $J$ with sides of lengths proportional to $(a_1,\cdots,a_n)$. As a consequence, we prove the existence of triangle inscribed in $J$ similar to any given triangle.

Abstract:We prove that given a finite set $E$ in a bordered Riemann surface $\mathcal{R}$, there is a continuous map $h\colon \overline{\mathcal{R}}\setminus E\to\mathbb{C}^n$ ($n\geq 2$) such that $h|_{\mathcal{R}\setminus E} \colon \mathcal{R}\setminus E\to\mathbb{C}^n$ is a complete holomorphic immersion (embedding if $n\geq 3$) which is meromorphic on $\mathcal{R}$ and has effective poles at all points in $E$, and $h|_{b\overline{\mathcal{R}}} \colon b\overline{\mathcal{R}}\to\mathbb{C}^n$ is a topological embedding. In particular, $h(b\overline{\mathcal{R}})$ consists of the union of finitely many pairwise disjoint Jordan curves which we ensure to be of Hausdorff dimension one. We establish a more general result including uniform approximation and interpolation.

Abstract:We consider systems of simple closed curves on surfaces and their total number of intersection points, their so-called crossing number. For a fixed number of curves, we aim to minimise the crossing number. We determine the minimal crossing number of up to 12 curves on a surface of genus 2 and prove that minimising systems are unique up to homeomorphisms of the surface and isotopies of curves.

Abstract:We construct a version of Lagrangian Floer homology whose chain complex is generated by the inscriptions of a rectangle into a real analytic Jordan curve. By using its associated spectral invariants, we establish that a rectifiable Jordan curve admits inscriptions of a whole interval of rectangles. In particular, it inscribes a square if the area it encloses is more than half that of a circle of equal diameter.

Abstract:The universe provides numerous extremely interesting astrophysical sources of synchrotron X radiation. The Chandra X-ray Observatory and other X-ray missions provide powerful probes of these and other cosmic X-ray sources. Chandra is the X-ray component of NASA's Great Observatory Program which also includes the Hubble Space telescope, the Spitzer Infrared Telescope Facility, and the now defunct Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory. The Chandra X-Ray Observatory provides the best angular resolution (sub-arcsecond) of any previous, current, or planned (for the foreseeable near future) space-based X-ray instrumentation. We present here a brief overview of the technical capability of this X-Ray observatory and some of the remarkable discoveries involving cosmic synchrotron sources.

Abstract:We consider Jordan curves $\gamma=\cup_{j=1}^n \gamma_j$ in the Riemann sphere for which each $\gamma_j$ is a hyperbolic geodesic in the complement of the remaining arcs $\gamma\smallsetminus \gamma_j$. These curves are characterized by the property that their conformal welding is piecewise M\"obius. Among other things, we compute the Schwarzian derivatives of the Riemann maps of the two regions in $\hat {\mathbb C}\smallsetminus \gamma$, show that they form a rational function with second order poles at the endpoints of the $\gamma_j,$ and show that the poles are simple if the curve has continuous tangents. Our key tool is the explicit computation of all geodesic pairs, namely pairs of chords $\gamma=\gamma_1\cup\gamma_2$ in a simply connected domain $D$ such that $\gamma_j$ is a hyperbolic geodesic in $D\smallsetminus \gamma_{3-j}$ for both $j=1$ and $j=2$.

Abstract:We construct a large new family of rational algebraic curves in the complex projective plane with a (p,q) cusp singularity. More precisely, we classify all such pairs (p,q) for curves which are rigid (in a suitable sense), finding a phase transition from discrete to continuous as the ratio p/q crosses the fourth power of the golden ratio. In particular, for many values of (p,q), our curves solve the minimal degree problem for plane curves with a (p,q) cusp singularity. Our technique relies on (i) explicit bijections between curves in log Calabi-Yau surfaces and curves in nontoric blowups of toric surfaces, (ii) the tropical vertex group and its connections with relative Gromov--Witten invariants, and (iii) recent positivity results for scattering diagrams. As our main application, we completely solve the stabilized symplectic embedding problem for four-dimensional ellipsoids into the four-dimensional round ball. The answer is neatly encoded in a single piecewise smooth function which transitions from an infinite Fibonacci staircase to an explicit rational function. Many of our results also extend to other target spaces, e.g. del Pezzo surfaces and more general rational surfaces.

Abstract:Given a set of planar curves (Jordan arcs), each pair of which meets — either crosses or touches — exactly once, we establish an upper bound on the number of touchings. We show that such a curve family has O(t2n) touchings, where t is the number of faces in the curve arrangement that contains at least one endpoint of one of the curves. Our method relies on finding special subsets of curves called quasi-grids in curve families; this gives some structural insight into curve families with a high number of touchings.

Abstract:We study properties of rational curves on complete intersections in positive characteristic. It has long been known that in characteristic 0, smooth Calabi–Yau and general type varieties are not uniruled. In positive characteristic, however, there are well-known counterexamples to this statement. We will show that nevertheless, a general Calabi–Yau or general type complete intersection in projective space is not uniruled. We will also show that the space of complete intersections of degree (d1,⋯,dk) containing a rational curve has codimension at least ∑i=1kdi−2n+2 and give similar results for hypersurfaces containing higher genus curves.

Abstract:We show that any embedding inscribes a trapezoid or maps three points to a line, where is the smallest power of satisfying , and denotes the Hurwitz–Radon function. The proof is elementary and includes a novel application of nonsingular bilinear maps. As an application, we recover recent results on the nonexistence of affinely -regular maps, for infinitely many dimensions , without resorting to sophisticated algebraic techniques.

Abstract:There are two types of $J$-holomorphic spheres in a symplectic manifold invariant under an anti-symplectic involution: those that have a fixed point locus and those that do not. The former are described by moduli spaces of $J$-holomorphic disks, which are well studied in the literature. In this paper, we first study moduli spaces describing the latter and then combine the two types of moduli spaces to get a well-defined theory of counting real curves of genus 0. We use equivariant localization to show that these invariants (unlike the disk invariants) are essentially the same for the two (standard) involutions on $\mathbb{P}^{4n-1}$.

Abstract:In this notes we study complex projective plane curves whose graded module of Jacobian syzygies is generated by its minimal degree component.
