Abstract:We prove the stability of $Symp(X,\omega)\cap Diff_0(X)$ for a one-point blow-up of irrational ruled surfaces and study their topological colimit. Non-trivial generators of $\pi_0[Symp(X,\omega)\cap Diff_0(X)]$ that differ from Lagrangian Dehn twists are detected.

Abstract:We apply Zhang's almost Kähler Nakai-Moishezon theorem and Li-Zhang's comparison of $J$-symplectic cones to establish a stability result for the symplectomorphism group of a rational $4$-manifold $M$ with Euler number up to $12$. As a corollary, we also derive a stability result for the space of embedded symplectic balls in $M$. A noteworthy feature of our approach is that we systematically explore various spaces and groups associated to a symplectic cohomology class $u$ rather than with a single symplectic form $\omega$. To this end, we prove a weaker version of the tamed $J$-inflation procedures of D. McDuff and O. Buse that fixes a gap in their original formulations.

Abstract:We consider the space of holomorphic maps from a compact Riemann surface to a projective space blown up at finitely many points. We show that the homology of this mapping space equals that of the space of continuous maps that intersect the exceptional divisors positively, once the degree of the maps is sufficiently positive compared to the degree of homology. The proof uses a version of Vassiliev's method of simplicial resolution. As a consequence, we obtain a homological stability result for rational curves on the degree $5$ del Pezzo surface, which is analogous to a case of the Batyrev--Manin conjectures on rational point counts.

Abstract:We show that many toric domains X in R4 admit symplectic embeddings ϕ into dilates of themselves which are knotted in the strong sense that there is no symplectomorphism of the target that takes ϕ(X) to X. For instance X can be taken equal to a polydisk P(1,1) or to any convex toric domain that both is contained in P(1,1) and properly contains a ball B4(1); by contrast a result of McDuff shows that B4(1) (or indeed any 4-dimensional ellipsoid) cannot have this property. The embeddings are constructed based on recent advances in symplectic embeddings of ellipsoids, though in some cases a more elementary construction is possible. The fact that the embeddings are knotted is proved using filtered positive S1-equivariant symplectic homology.

Abstract:We produce simply connected, minimal, symplectic Lefschetz fibrations realizing all the lattice points in the symplectic geography plane below the Noether line. This provides a symplectic extension of the classical works populating the complex geography plane with holomorphic Lefschetz fibrations. Our examples are obtained by rationally blowing down Lefschetz fibrations with clustered nodal fibers, the total spaces of which are potentially new homotopy elliptic surfaces. Similarly, clustering nodal fibers on higher genera Lefschetz fibrations on standard rational surfaces, we get rational blowdown configurations that yield new constructions of small symplectic exotic $4$-manifolds. We present an example of a construction of a minimal symplectic exotic $\mathbb{CP} \# 5\,\overline{\mathbb{CP}}$ through this procedure applied to a genus-$3$ fibration.

Abstract:A taming symplectic structure provides an upper bound on the area of an approximately pseudoholomorphic curve in terms of its homology class. We prove that, conversely, an almost complex manifold with such an area bound admits a taming symplectic structure. This confirms a speculation by Gromov. We also characterize the cone of taming symplectic structures numerically, prove that complex 2-cycles can be approximated by coarsely holomorphic curves, and provide a lower energy bound for such curves.

Abstract:Let $M$ be a symplectic manifold carrying a Hamiltonian $S^1$-action with momentum map $J:M \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ and consider the corresponding symplectic quotient $\mathcal{M}_0:=J^{-1}(0)/S^1$. We extend Sjamaar's complex of differential forms on $\mathcal{M}_0$, whose cohomology is isomorphic to the singular cohomology $H(\mathcal{M}_0;\mathbb{R})$ of $\mathcal{M}_0$ with real coefficients, to a complex of differential forms on $\mathcal{M}_0$ associated with a partial desingularization $\widetilde{\mathcal{M}}_0$, which we call resolution differential forms. The cohomology of that complex turns out to be isomorphic to the de Rham cohomology $H(\widetilde{ \mathcal{M}}_0)$ of $\widetilde{\mathcal{M}}_0$. Based on this, we derive a long exact sequence involving both $H(\mathcal{M}_0;\mathbb{R})$ and $H(\widetilde{ \mathcal{M}}_0)$ and give conditions for its splitting. We then define a Kirwan map $\mathcal{K}:H_{S^1}(M) \rightarrow H(\widetilde{\mathcal{M}}_0)$ from the equivariant cohomology $H_{S^1}(M)$ of $M$ to $H(\widetilde{\mathcal{M}}_0)$ and show that its image contains the image of $H(\mathcal{M}_0;\mathbb{R})$ in $H(\widetilde{\mathcal{M}}_0)$ under the natural inclusion. Combining both results in the case that all fixed point components of $M$ have vanishing odd cohomology we obtain a surjection $\check \kappa:H^\textrm{ev}_{S^1}(M) \rightarrow H^\textrm{ev}(\mathcal{M}_0;\mathbb{R})$ in even degrees, while already simple examples show that a similar surjection in odd degrees does not exist in general. As an interesting class of examples we study abelian polygon spaces.

Stability and largeness properties of minimal surfaces in higher codimension

Abstract:We consider stable minimal surfaces of genus 1 in Euclidean space and in Riemannian manifolds. Under the condition of covering stability (all finite covers are stable) we show that a genus 1 finite total curvature minimal surface in $\mathbb R^n$ lies in an even dimensional affine subspace and is holomorphic for some constant orthogonal complex structure. For stable minimal tori in Riemannian manifolds we give an explicit bound on the systole in terms of a positive lower bound on the isotropic curvature. As an application we estimate the systole of noncyclic abelian subgroups of the fundamental group of PIC manifolds. This gives a new proof of the result of [5] that the fundamental cannot contain a noncyclic free abelian subgroup. The proofs apply the structure theory of holomorphic vector bundles over genus 1 Riemann surfaces developed by M. Atiyah [2].

Abstract:Let $\omega$ be a Kaehler form on the real $4$-torus $T^4$. Suppose that $\omega$ satisfies an irrationality condition which can be achieved by an arbitrarily small perturbation of $\omega$. This note shows that the smoothly trivial symplectic mapping class group of the one-point symplectic blowup of $(T^4,\omega)$ is infinitely generated.

Almost Hermitian structures on moduli spaces of non-Abelian monopoles and applications to the topology of symplectic four-manifolds

Abstract:This work is a sequel to our previous monograph <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2010.15789" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2010.15789">arXiv:2010.15789</a> (to appear in AMS Memoirs), where we initiated our program to prove that the Bogomolov-Miyaoka-Yau inequality holds for closed, symplectic four-manifolds and, more generally, for closed, smooth four-manifolds with a Seiberg-Witten basic class. This inequality was first proved for compact, complex surfaces of general type by Miyaoka (1977) and Yau (1978). Our approach uses a version of Morse theory for a natural Hamiltonian, the square of the $L^2$ norm of the coupled spinors, for the circle action on the moduli space of non-Abelian monopoles over a closed four-manifold. It has the aim of proving the existence of a projectively anti-self-dual connection on a rank-two Hermitian vector bundle over a blow-up of the four-manifold, where the first Pontrjagin number of the vector bundle is negative and greater than or equal to minus the Euler characteristic of the blown-up four-manifold. Our Morse theory argument relies on positivity of virtual Morse-Bott indices for critical points of Hamiltonians for circle actions on complex analytic spaces (or real analytic spaces that, locally, are sufficiently well-approximated by complex analytic model spaces), as developed by the first author in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2206.14710" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2206.14710">arXiv:2206.14710</a>. In our application to the moduli space of non-Abelian monopoles, the critical points are fixed points of the circle action and thus represented by Seiberg-Witten monopoles.

Periodic symplectic and Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms on irrational ruled surfaces

Abstract:We study the extension of homologically trivial symplectic or Hamiltonian cyclic actions to Hamiltonian circle actions on irrational ruled symplectic $4$-manifolds. On one hand, we construct symplectic involutions on minimal irrational ruled $4$-manifolds that cannot extend to a symplectic circle action even with a possibly different symplectic form. Higher dimensional examples are also constructed. On the other hand, for homologically trivial symplectic cyclic actions of any other order, we show that such an extension always exists. We also classify finite groups of symplecticmorphisms that acts trivially on the first homology group, and prove the non-extendability of the Klein $4$-group action to the three dimensional rotation group action motivated by the classification of finite groups of symplectomorphisms.

On the symplectic structure over the moduli space of projective structures on a surface

Abstract:The moduli space of projective structures on a compact oriented surface $\Sigma$ has a holomorphic symplectic structure, which is constructed by pulling back, using the monodromy map, the Atiyah--Bott--Goldman symplectic form on the character variety ${\rm Hom}(\pi_1(\Sigma), \text{PSL}(2, {\mathbb C}))/\!\!/\text{PSL}(2, {\mathbb C})$. We produce another construction of this symplectic form. This construction shows that the symplectic form on the moduli space is actually algebraic. Note that the monodromy map is only holomorphic and not algebraic, so the first construction does not give algebraicity of the pulled back form.

Cyclotomic Structures in Symplectic Topology

Abstract:We extend the Cohen-Jones-Segal construction of stable homotopy types associated to flow categories of Morse-Smale functions $f$ to the setting where $f$ is equivariant under a finite group action and is Morse but no longer Morse-Smale. This setting occurs universally, as equivariant Morse functions can rarely be perturbed to nearby equivariant Morse-Smale functions. The method is very general, and allows one to do equivariant Floer theory while avoiding all the complications typically caused by issues of equivariant transversality. The construction assigns a (genuine) equivariant orthogonal spectrum to an equivariant framed virtually smooth flow category. Using this method, we construct, for a compact symplectic manifold $M$, which is symplectically atoroidal with contact boundary, and is equipped with an equivariant trivialization of its polarization class, a cyclotomic structure on the spectral lift of the symplectic cohomology $SH^*(M)$. This generalizes a variant of the map which sends loops to their $p$-fold covers on free loop spaces to the setting of general Liouville domains, and suggests a systematic connection between Floer homology and $p$-adic Hodge theory.

On a symplectic generalization of a Hirzebruch problem

Abstract:Motivated by a problem of Hirzebruch, we study $8$-dimensional, closed, symplectic manifolds having a Hamiltonian torus action with isolated fixed points and second Betti number equal to $1$. Such manifolds are automatically positive monotone. Our main result concerns those endowed with a Hamiltonian $T^2$-action and fourth Betti number equal to $2$. We classify their isotropy data, (equivariant) cohomology rings and (equivariant) Chern classes, and prove that they agree with those of certain explicit Fano $4$-folds with torus actions. Moreover, under more general assumptions, we prove several finiteness results concerning Betti and Chern numbers of $8$-dimensional, positive monotone symplectic manifolds with a Hamiltonian torus action.

Abstract:Given a compact surface $M$, consider the natural right action of the group of diffeomorphisms $\mathcal{D}(M)$ of $M$ on $\mathcal{C}^{\infty}(M,\mathbb{R})$ given by $(f,h)\mapsto f\circ h$ for $f\in \mathcal{C}^{\infty}(M,\mathbb{R})$ and $h\in\mathcal{D}(M)$. Denote by $\mathcal{F}(M)$ the subset of $\mathcal{C}^{\infty}(M,\mathbb{R})$ consisting of function $f:M\to\mathbb{R}$ taking constant values on connected components of $\partial{M}$, having no critical points on $\partial{M}$, and such that at each of its critical points $z$ the function $f$ is $\mathcal{C}^{\infty}$ equivalent to some homogenenous polynomial without multiple factors. In particular, $\mathcal{F}(M)$ contains all Morse maps. Let also $\mathcal{O}(f) = \{ f\circ h \mid h\in\mathcal{D}(M) \}$ be the orbit of $f$. Previously it was computed the algebraic structure of $\pi_1\mathcal{O}(f)$ for all $f\in\mathcal{F}(M)$, where $M$ is any orientable compact surface distinct from $2$-sphere. In the present paper we compute the group $\pi_0\mathcal{S}(f,\partial\mathbb{M})$, where $\mathbb{M}$ is a Möbius band. As a consequence we obtain an explicit algebraic description of $\pi_1\mathcal{O}(f)$ for all non-orientable surfaces distinct from Klein bottle and projective plane.

On Symplectic Packing Problems in Higher Dimensions

Abstract:Let $B^{2n}(R)$ denote the closed $2n$-dimensional symplectic ball of area $R$, and let $\Sigma_g(L)$ be a closed symplectic surface of genus $g$ and area $L$. We prove that there is a symplectic embedding $\bigsqcup_{i=1}^k B^4(R_i) \times \Sigma_g (L) \overset{s}\hookrightarrow \operatorname{int}(B^4(R))\times \Sigma_g (L)$ if and only if there exists a symplectic embedding $\bigsqcup_{i=1}^k B^4(R_i) \overset{s}\hookrightarrow \mathrm{int}(B^4(R))$. This lies in contrast with the standard higher dimensional ball packing problem $\bigsqcup\limits_{i=1}^k B^{2 n}(R_i)\overset{s}\hookrightarrow \mathrm{int}(B^{2n}(R))$ for $n >2$, which we conjecture (based on index behavior for pseudoholomorphic curves) is controlled entirely by Gromov's two ball theorem and volume considerations. We also deduce analogous results for stabilized embeddings of concave toric domains into convex domains, and we establish a stabilized version of Gromov's two ball theorem which holds in any dimension. Our main tools are: (i) the symplectic blowup construction along symplectic submanifolds, (ii) an h-principle for symplectic surfaces in high dimensional symplectic manifolds, and (iii) a stabilization result for pseudoholomorphic holomorphic curves of genus zero.

Dynamics of composite symplectic Dehn twists

Abstract:This paper appears as the confluence of hyperbolic dynamics, symplectic topology and low dimensional topology, etc. We show that composite symplectic Dehn twists have certain form of nonuniform hyperbolicity: it has positive topological entropy as well as two families of local stable and unstable Lagrangian manifolds, which are analogous to signatures of pseudo Anosov mapping classes. Moreover, we show that the rank of the Floer cohomology group of these compositions grows exponentially under iterations, which partially answers a question of Smith concerning the classification of symplectic mapping class group in higher dimensions. Finally, we propose a conjecture on the positive metric entropy of our model and point out its relationship with the standard map.

Abstract:We describe the local and Steenbrink vanishing problems for singular symplectic varieties with isolated singularities. We do this by constructing a morphism $$\mathbb D_X(\underline \Omega_X^{n+p}) \to \underline \Omega_X^{n+p}$$ for a symplectic variety $X$ of dimension $2n$ for $\frac{1}{2}\mathrm{codim}_X(X_{\mathrm{sing}}) < p$, where $\underline \Omega_X^k$ is the $k^{th}$-graded piece of the Du Bois complex and $\mathbb D_X$ is the Grothendieck duality functor. We show this morphism is a quasi-isomorphism when $p = n-1$ and that this symmetry descends to the Hodge filtration on the intersection Hodge module. As applications, we describe the higher Du Bois and higher rational properties for symplectic germs and the cohomology of primitive symplectic 4-folds.
