Abstract:This is a collection of the lecture notes of the three authors for a first-year graduate course on control system theory and design (ECE 515 , formerly ECE 415) at the ECE Department of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. This is a fundamental course on the modern theory of dynamical systems and their control, and builds on a first-level course in control that emphasizes frequency-domain methods (such as the course ECE 486 , formerly ECE 386, at UIUC ). The emphasis in this graduate course is on state space techniques, and it encompasses modeling , analysis (of structural properties of systems, such as stability, controllability, and observability), synthesis (of observers/compensators and controllers) subject to design specifications, and optimization . Accordingly, this set of lecture notes is organized in four parts, with each part dealing with one of the issues identified above. Concentration is on linear systems , with nonlinear systems covered only in some specific contexts, such as stability and dynamic optimization. Both continuous-time and discrete-time systems are covered, with the former, however, in much greater depth than the latter. The main objective of this course is to teach the student some fundamental principles within a solid conceptual framework, that will enable her/him to design feedback loops compatible with the information available on the "states" of the system to be controlled, and by taking into account considerations such as stability, performance, energy conservation, and even robustness. A second objective is to familiarize her/him with the available modern computational, simulation, and general software tools that facilitate the design of effective feedback loops

Practical Implementations in Advancing Laboratory Courses for Control Engineering Education

Abstract:Some practical approaches have been introduced and applied for control engineering education. Compared with conventional lecturing and laboratory exercising, instructing outcomes can be improved significantly. Two independent sets of experimental instruments from Feedback Instruments Limited are selected to conduct experiments on a basis of the fundamental control theories. Matlab has been used for data analyzing, simulation, plotting and programming. Simulink is also employed to implement numerical simulations for advanced control practices. For practical control problems in real time, such as robotic control and engine control, Labview can be applied considering its advantages of the graphical user interface design and block diagram approach. In particular, its 33-110 servo system has been selected, which consists of three components: mechanical unit, analogue unit and digital unit. The 150 servo system contains a number of major discrete component units. Both systems can be used to test the fundamental control principles, such as the PID control. Some examples to improve classes at the system and control laboratory are presented, using software or hardware instructing tools such as the Matlab, Simulink and Labview.

Abstract:System view, understanding systems and how they are controlled is an important discipline in engineering education. Nowadays considering the ever increasing knowledge, the explosion of information available at the internet, the available visual technics and software tools there is a need to revisit the content and the teaching methodology of the first control course. The IFAC Technical Committee on Control Education (9.4) is circulating a pilot survey addressing these questions. Here we present our experience related to renewing the control course. The topics of the course are given. The main ideas are explained on two levels: hopefully in an understandable way for everyone, and precisely, using mathematical tools. In the lectures some parts of the multilevel e-book, Sysbook are referred, which has been elaborated to present the main principles governing systems and control on different levels. Besides static teaching materials interactive demonstrations developed for Sysbook are also used in the lectures which enhance the effectiveness and also enjoyment of the learning process. At the last part of each lecture the students are active solving problems related to the topic of the lecture. They are motivated by the obtained extra evaluation points. Then the solutions of the problems are discussed. Computer laboratory exercises using MATLAB/SIMULINK software contribute to understanding and applying the analysis and synthesis methods discussed in the lectures. The course is supported by the recently published Springer books: Keviczky et al.: Control Engineering and Control Engineering: MATLAB Exercises. In the content of the control course a new feature is the emphasis of the YOULA parameterization method for controller design already in the first control course and showing that other controller design methods can be considered as its special cases. Nowadays in education a new teaching – learning paradigm is Open Content Development (OCD) which means active participation of the teachers and students creating an up-to-date teaching material. This project runs at the Department of Technical Education at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics since 2015 supported by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. In the frame of vocational teacher training programs several so-called micro-contents have been developed. Utilizing the experiences of these pilot efforts the Sysbook platform has been connected to the OCD model. In a special surface Sysbook provides several case studies for systems and their control (e.g. driving, energy production and distribution, oil refinery, systems and control in the living organism, etc.). Teachers and students studying systems and control can elaborate new case studies in their areas of interest which means active application of the learned topics. After evaluation these projects can be uploaded in the student area of Sysbook. Summarizing: in the methodology of teaching a basic control course the motivation of the students can be increased by active participation in the learning process, including interactive demonstration of the principles, solving exercises at the end of the lectures and getting immediate feedback, solving analysis and synthesis problems in the computer laboratories, and developing their own case studies for Sysbook. It should be also emphasized that the examples of systems and their control should be chosen mainly from the area of the specialization of the students (electrical or software engineering, chemical engineering, biology, economics, etc.). Also it is important to provide real-time experiments in laboratory work or using distant laboratories. IFAC Repository would be also of great help reaching useful resources.

Abstract:Control issues in different advance research fields are now blossoming and making their irreplaceable contribution for modern society. But our next generation's cognition of control related knowledge is not enough. To help students open the door of “control”, this research designs a control, systems and stability course of 8 lectures in middle and high school's biology curriculum. In practice, this control-focused course has a good impact on students, attracting many of them choose further elective control-related courses/lectures provided by school itself and university control program entry-level MOOCs.

Abstract:In the fall of 2001 we implemented the first of a series of new controller design projects in our Junior/Senior level controls class in Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University. Our first new project was the design of a controller for the point-to-point motion of a gantry crane. Student teams modeled the gantry crane and developed a controller to meet performance specifications. The equipment was used for different projects in subsequent semesters. At the end of each semester, each group presented their design and students stayed voluntarily and asked questions for several hours. We have been very impressed with the quality of the students' work. We believe that the combination of hands-on equipment, the challenge of the project specifications, and a design competition greatly motivated our students. The purpose of this paper is to describe the changes we have made to our projects and what we have learned from the process.

Abstract:Existing HCI courses are usually designed for advanced undergraduates and graduates. And most of them do not have independent lab course. The practical parts are confined to the form of projects in the curriculum. This paper presents a new lab course called Media and Cognition and its lab platform. The new lab course is more appropriate and more general education for junior students with less professional knowledge. By using a larger, scalable and complete design of experiments, included five project modules and thirty-seven knowledge points, the lab platform integrates many contents of existing HCI courses, and offers more knowledge about media expression and human cognition to meet higher requirements of computer education. The other contributions of this work include: provides Open-Educational-Resources (OERs) for short-term foreign exchange students. Now the lab course has served more than one hundred students every semester. Over thirty pieces of achievements are produced in each year. The Statistics of feedback demonstrates that Media and Cognition and its lab platform can improve the students' ability of developing HCI projects.
A Problem-Based Learning Approach to Teaching Design in CS1

Abstract:Design skills are increasingly recognized as a core competency for software professionals. Unfortunately, these skills are difficult to teach because design requires freedom and open-ended thinking, but new designers require a structured process to keep them from being overwhelmed by possibilities. We scaffolded this by creating worksheets for every Design Thinking step, and embedding them in a PowerPoint deck on which students can collaborate. We present our experience teaching a team design project course to 200 first-year-university students, taking them from user interviews to functional prototypes. To challenge and support every student in a class where high school programming experience ranged from zero hours to three computer science courses, we gave teams the option of developing single-user or multi-user (distributed) web applications, using two Event-Driven Programming frameworks. We identified common failure modes from previous years, and developed the scaffolded approach and problem definition to avoid them. The techniques developed include using a "game matrix" for structured brainstorming and developing projects that require students to empathize with users very different from themselves. We present quantitative and qualitative evidence from surveys and focus groups that show how these strategies impacted learning, and the extent to which students' awareness of the strategies led to the development of metacognitive abilities.

Abstract:Current practice in simulation and implementation of robot controllers is usually undertaken with guidance from high-level design diagrams and pseudocode. Thus, no rigorous connection between the design and the development of a robot controller is established. This paper presents a framework for designing robotic controllers with support for automatic generation of executable code and automatic property checking. A state-machine based notation, RoboChart, and a tool (RoboTool) that implements the automatic generation of code and mathematical models from the designed controllers are presented. We demonstrate the application of RoboChart and its related tool through a case study of a robot performing an exploration task. The automatically generated code is platform independent and is used in both simulation and two different physical robotic platforms. Properties are formally checked against the mathematical models generated by RoboTool, and further validated in the actual simulations and physical experiments. The tool not only provides engineers with a way of designing robotic controllers formally but also paves the way for correct implementation of robotic systems.

Abstract:AbstractThere is an increasing demand for software, suitable for large segments of users with different needs and competences. User-Centred Design (UCD) methods have been used in the software industry and taught to software developers to meet the various needs of users. The field of UCD covers a broad set of topics that can be covered in a range of courses with various content. In this paper we describe the design of a two-week course focusing on teaching UCD methods to students with various backgrounds that are useful for the students in the future. The course schedule included lectures and workshop activities where the lecturers taught UCD topics and coached the students in developing skills for using the selected UCD methods during the course to design and evaluate an interactive system. Additionally, we describe two types of course evaluations that we conducted: qualitative weekly evaluations and a post-course survey.The results show that students were in general positive about the course content and the combination of lectures and workshop activities. Hi-fi prototyping was the UCD method that the students rated as being most useful for the course and their future. They particularly liked how realistic these were for the users. The least useful method in the course and in the future was “Walking the Wall”, where students read an affinity diagram and make design suggestions. Finally, we suggest changes for a prospective course, based on the results of the evaluations.

Abstract:ECE 110, Introduction to Electrical and Computer Engineering, is a new laboratory course for freshmen. Unlike most freshman engineering courses, ECE 110 provides substantial design and problem solving experiences with electronic devices and electrical systems. To convey fundamental concepts and principles in electrical and computer engineering, ECE 110 is directed toward the design of an autonomous electric vehicle. Each laboratory session focuses on one subsystem of the vehicle, such as the power supply, the infrared photodiode sensors, and the digital pulse width modulation circuit to control motor speed. The last four weeks culminate in a design challenge: each pair of students enhances their vehicle to negotiate a previously unseen course with obstacles. Topics are covered in lectures as they are needed in the laboratory.<>

Abstract:Feedback Control Systems, ME C134/EE C128, is an introductory control systems course at UC Berkeley. Over the entire course, students gain practical experience by implementing various control schemes and designing observers in an effort to ultimately stabilize an inverted pendulum on a linear track. Throughout this learning process, frequent mishaps occur where improper controller implementation damages hardware. A simple example concerns the student's controller driving the cart into the wall at full speed. To offset the financial burden placed on the university in light of these mishaps, we designed a streamlined adaptive control system using set theory. We utilized lab-provided plant models to generate an $O_\infty$ set, attenuated the vertices to generate a safe, sub-region $S_\infty$, and attenuated in such a manner as to ensure an evolution of the vertices of $S_\infty$ remained within $O_\infty$ for at least one time step. Afterwards, we constructed a single Simulink block for students to easily implement within their own control schemes. This block consistently checks to see whether the system state remains within $S_\infty$. If that check is true, our controller does nothing. If it returns false, our controller takes over, drives the system to a prescribed safe-point, and shuts the system down. Overall, our process assumes perfect plant modelling, though our insistence on an evolution of $S_\infty$ remaining within $O_\infty$ resulted in considerable robustness to disturbances. In the end we were successful in implementing this real-time adaptive system and will provide it to the department for use in future labs.

Abstract:System Software is a fundamental core course for undergraduate students of Computer Science and Engineering. The traditional approach to teaching the System Software course within the School of Computer Science and Engineering lacked a meaningful connection to real-world machine architectures, leading to disinterest and reduced engagement among undergraduate students. This paper introduces an innovative teaching method designed to empower students to grasp the system programs of real systems effectively. Our approach involves effortlessly integrating the delivery of system software content with the Atmel AVR ATmega32 real-time machine, which students have previously encountered in a prior semester. Moreover, this paper provides a detailed examination of the use of a hypothetical machine in traditional teaching methodologies. While this method allowed for a more in-depth exploration of system software concepts, it struggled to establish a practical link to real machine. The novel teaching approach employed in this study adopts a unique method that links all the system software concepts with the practical system program of a real-time machine. This paper also explains how the advances in Technology has played a crucial role in considering real-time machines as examples. And it also discusses the limitations of teaching concepts using only hypothetical machine and concise overview of the chosen real-time machine is provided, followed by the observation of enhanced knowledge of system software concepts through its integration. To measure the effectiveness of the proposed methodology, we also gathered valuable feedback from the students. The course result analysis shows substantial improvement in understanding the concepts, performance and lifelong learning of the students. Abstract:In this paper I describe the design of an introductory course in Human-Robot Interaction. This project-driven course is designed to introduce undergraduate and graduate engineering students, especially those enrolled in Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, and Robotics degree programs, to key theories and methods used in the field of Human-Robot Interaction that they would otherwise be unlikely to see in those degree programs. To achieve this aim, the course takes students all the way from stakeholder analysis to empirical evaluation, covering and integrating key Qualitative, Design, Computational, and Quantitative methods along the way. I detail the goals, audience, and format of the course, and provide a detailed walkthrough of the course syllabus.

Abstract:In the fall of 2001 we implemented a new controller design project in our Junior/Senior level controls class in Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University. The old project, which involved the identification and control of a “black box”, failed to challenge and motivate students. Our new project is the design of a controller for the point-to-point motion of a gantry crane system. Student teams modeled the gantry crane and developed a controller to meet several performance specifications. The designs were implemented in Simulink with MATLAB’s Real-Time Workshop. A competition served to further motivate the students. In the end we were very impressed with the great effort the students gave and the quality of their designs. Each group presented their design and most students stayed and asked questions for several hours.

Project-Based Learning for Robot Control Theory: A Robot Operating System (ROS) Based Approach

Abstract:Control theory is an important cornerstone of the robotics field and is considered a fundamental subject in an undergraduate and postgraduate robotics curriculum. Furthermore, project-based learning has shown significant benefits in engineering domains, specifically in interdisciplinary fields such as robotics which require hands-on experience to master the discipline adequately. However, designing a project-based learning experience to teach control theory in a hands-on setting can be challenging, due to the rigor of mathematical concepts involved in the subject. Moreover, access to reliable hardware required for a robotics control lab, including the robots, sensors, interfaces, and measurement instruments, may not be feasible in developing countries and even many academic institutions in the US. The current paper presents a set of six project-based assignments for an advanced postgraduate Robot Control course. The assignments leverage the Robot Operating System (ROS), an open-source set of tools, libraries, and software, which is a de facto standard for the development of robotics applications. The use of ROS, along with its physics engine simulation framework, Gazebo, provides a hands-on robotics experience equivalent to working with real hardware. Learning outcomes include: i) theoretical analysis of linear and nonlinear dynamical systems, ii) formulation and implementation of advanced model-based robot control algorithms using classical and modern control theory, and iii) programming and performance evaluation of robotic systems on physics engine robot simulators. Course evaluations and student surveys demonstrate that the proposed project-based assignments successfully bridge the gap between theory and practice, and facilitate learning of control theory concepts and state-of-the-art robotics techniques through a hands-on approach.

Lessons in Teaching an Interdisciplinary Mechatronics Class

Abstract:It is common for engineers but rare for engineering students to be asked to work on projects with people whose expertise is in other fields. In an effort to address this shortcoming at the University of Dayton, an interdisciplinary mechatronics class was developed. This lab based course with equal numbers of electrical engineering and mechanical engineering seniors focused on designing, building and controlling electromechanical systems. This paper covers the development of the course and the challenges posed in teaching such a course. The course is centered on the concept of building an autonomous system by integrating a well designed mechanism with a well designed electrical controller. Particular emphasis is placed on the challenge of covering material which is basic and familiar to one set of students while being novel and challenging to another set of students. Additional discussion is included on encouraging cross-disciplinary communication, preventing asymmetrical workloads and stimulating innovation.

Abstract:Abstract Some of the most critical competencies students need to acquire to become control engineers require performing practices under actual industrial conditions. This means that they must not only master the theoretical aspects of the discipline but also acquire skills and attitudes to face unpredictable real-world situations. Software tools such as Matlab/Simulink are widely used to train the design and validation of controllers, but they fail to provide real industrial contexts. Nowadays, there are 3D simulation tools that support recreating industrial environments to a remarkable extent, making them very attractive for university courses. Nevertheless, their application in engineering courses is scarce yet. This paper presents a methodological framework for seizing into competency-based courses one of these simulation tools, called Factory I/O. Our approach was evaluated in a master’s course on Industrial PID Control at Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso (PUCV) in Chile. The evaluation comprised the qualitative analysis of students’ grades over four consecutive course editions and the qualitative study of students’ opinion on Factory I/O educational value. The objectives of our evaluation were (i) testing if Factory I/O helped students develop skills hard to practice in academic contexts, such as detecting faults or recognizing the importance of having well-defined operation protocols; (ii) validating our methodology for competency-based courses; and (iii) surveying our students about Matlab/Simulink and Factory I/O strengths/weaknesses to teach control engineering. According to the results, (a) Factory I/O complements Simulink by providing an adequate virtual environment to learn the aforementioned skills; and (b) our methodology supports courses’ continuous improvement through the statistical analysis of students’ achievements at different abstraction levels.

Abstract:Imagine having a system to control and only know that it belongs to a certain class of dynamical systems. Would it not be amazing to simply plug in a controller and have it work as intended? With the rise of in-context learning and powerful architectures like Transformers, this might be possible, and we want to show it. In this work, within the model reference framework, we hence propose the first in-context learning-based approach to design a unique contextual controller for an entire class of dynamical systems rather than focusing on just a single instance. Our promising numerical results show the possible advantages of the proposed paradigm, paving the way for a shift from the "one-system-one-controller" control design paradigm to a new "one-class-one-controller" logic.
