Abstract:An asymptotic local solution to the axisymmetric conduction problem with a discontinuous temperature boundary condition in the radial direction is presented. The Laplace's equation in cylindrical coordinates (r, z) is expanded near the discontinuity at r = 1, z = 0. The leading order term arises from the step-change in the boundary condition. The next term reflects the effect of curvature at the position of the temperature discontinuity and is a particular solution to the Poisson's equation. Subsequent higher-order terms involve general solutions to the Laplace's equation in Cartesian coordinates and depend on conditions on the far end boundaries. Three domain sizes are thus considered: (i) infinite solid cylinder (0 <= r < infinity, 0 <= z < infinity); (ii) semi-infinite solid cylinder with finite radius (0 <= r <= a, 0 <= z < infinity); and (iii) finite solid cylinder (0 <= r <= a, 0 <= z <= a). Exact solutions for temperature in those three cases are used to determine the coefficients in the higher order terms of the asymptotic solution. As a result, a simple expression for local normal wall heat flux near the discontinuity is obtained and the accuracy is confirmed by comparing with the heat flux obtained through high order extrapolation of the exact temperature field near the wall. Abstract:We consider the Cauchy problem for plate equations with rotational inertia and frictional damping terms. We will derive asymptotic profiles of the solution in L^2-sense as time goes to infinity in the case when the initial data have high and low regularity, respectively. Especially, in the low regularity case of the initial data one encounters the regularity-loss structure of the solutions, and the analysis is more delicate. We employ the so-called Fourier splitting method combined with the explicit expression of the solutions (high frequency estimates) and the method due to Ikehata (low frequency estimates).

Abstract:Of concern is the protection from overheating of an isotropically conducting body by an anisotropically conducting coating which is thin compared to the scale of the body. We assume either that the whole thermal tensor of the coating is small or that it is small in the directions normal to the body (a case we call “optimally aligned coating”). We study the asymptotic behavior of the solution to the heat equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions on the outer surface of the coating, as the thickness of the coating shrinks. We obtain the exact scaling relations between the thermal tensor and the thickness of the coating so that the effective (limiting) condition on the boundary of the body is of Dirichlet, Robin or Neumann type, with the last condition indicating good insulation.

Abstract:An analytical solution for the heat transfer in hollow cylinders with time-dependent boundary condition and time-dependent heat transfer coefficient at different surfaces is developed for the first time. The methodology is an extension of the shifting function method. By dividing the Biot function into a constant plus a function and introducing two specially chosen shifting functions, the system is transformed into a partial differential equation with homogenous boundary conditions only. The transformed system is thus solved by series expansion theorem. Limiting cases of the solution are studied and numerical results are compared with those in the literature. The convergence rate of the present solution is fast and the analytical solution is simple and accurate. Also, the influence of physical parameters on the temperature distribution of a hollow cylinder along the radial direction is investigated.

Specifically, we present a modified heat kernel as a long-time asymptotic profile which changes the mass, the center of mass and the variance of the n-dimensional heat kernel in accordance with the moments of the initial data.

Abstract:In this work, we study the asymptotic behaviour of solutions to the heat equation in exterior domains, i.e., domains which are the complement of a smooth compact set in $\mathbb{R}^N$. Different homogeneous boundary conditions are considered, including Dirichlet, Robin, and Neumann ones. In this second part of our work, we consider the case of bounded initial data and prove that, after some correction term, the solutions become close to the solutions in the whole space and show how complex behaviours appear. We also analyse the case of initial data in $L^p$ with $1<p<\infty$ where all solutions essentially decay to $0$ and the convergence rate could be arbitrarily slow.

Abstract:We consider the asymptotic behavior of solutions to the convection-diffusion equation: \[ \partial_t u - \mathrm{div}\left(a(x)\nabla u\right) = d\cdot\nabla \left(\left\lvert u\right\rvert ^{q-1}u\right),\ \ x\in\mathbb{R}^n, \ t>0 \] with an integrable initial data $u_{0}(x)$, where $n\ge1$, $q>1+\frac{1}{n}$ and $d\in \mathbb{R}^{n}$. Moreover, we take $a(x)=1+b(x)>0$, where $b(x)$ is smooth and decays fast enough at spatial infinity. It is known that the asymptotic profile of the solution to this problem can be given by the heat kernel. Moreover, some higher-order asymptotic expansions of the solution have already been studied. In particular, the structures of the second asymptotic profiles strongly depend on the nonlinear exponent $q$. More precisely, these profiles have different decay orders in each of the following three cases: $1+\frac{1}{n}<q<1+\frac{2}{n}$; $q=1+\frac{2}{n}$; $q>1+\frac{2}{n}$. In this paper, we focus on the critical case $q=1+\frac{2}{n}$. By analyzing the corresponding integral equation in details, we have succeeded to give the more higher-order asymptotic expansion of the solution, which generalizes the previous works.

On the Cauchy problem for semilinear thermoelastic plate systems in the $L^q$ framework

Abstract:We mainly consider semilinear thermoelastic plate systems with general power nonlinearities in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^n$. By applying the Fourier analysis, some sharp $(L^q\cap L^m)-L^q$ estimates of solutions (with any $1\leqslant m\leqslant q\leqslant +\infty$) to the classical thermoelastic plate system are derived, which cover all known results in $\mathbb{R}^n$. Then, we investigate global in time existence of small data $L^q$ solutions (with any $q\in[1,+\infty]$) and blow-up of weak solutions for the semilinear thermoelastic plate systems under suitable conditions on the power exponents, which justify critical exponents for several classes of nonlinearities.

Abstract:In this work, we study the asymptotic behaviour of solutions to the heat equation in exterior domains, i.e., domains which are the complement of a smooth compact set in $\mathbb{R}^N$. Different homogeneous boundary conditions are considered, including Dirichlet, Robin, and Neumann conditions for integrable initial data in $L^1(\Omega)$. After taking into account the loss of mass of the solution through the boundary, depending on the boundary conditions, we describe the asymptotic spatial distribution of the remaining mass in terms of the Gaussian and of a suitable asymptotic profile function. We show that our results have optimal time rates.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new approach to the study of direct and inverse problems for a singularly perturbed heat equation with nonlinear temperature-dependent diffusion, based on the further development and use of asymptotic analysis methods in the nonlinear singularly perturbed reactiondiffusion-advection problems. The essence of the approach is presented using the example of a class of one-dimensional stationary problems with nonlinear boundary conditions, for which the case of applicability of asymptotic analysis is highlighted. Sufficient conditions for the existence of classical solutions of the boundary layer type and the type of contrast structures are formulated, asymptotic approximations of an arbitrary order of accuracy of such solutions are constructed, algorithms for constructing formal asymptotics are substantiated, and the Lyapunov asymptotic stability of stationary solutions with boundary and internal layers as solutions to the corresponding parabolic problems is investigated. A class of nonlinear problems that take into account lateral heat exchange with the environment according to Newton’s law is considered. A theorem on the existence and uniqueness of a classical solution with boundary layers in problems of this type is proven. As applications of the study, methods for solving specific direct and inverse problems of nonlinear heat transfer related to increasing the operating efficiency of rectilinear heating elements in the smelting furnaces — heat exchangers are presented: the calculation of thermal fields in the heating elements and the method for restoring the coefficients of thermal diffusion and heat transfer from modeling data.
Dynamics for a diffusive epidemic model with a free boundary: sharp asymptotic profile

Abstract:This paper concerns the sharp asymptotic profiles of the solution of a diffusive epidemic model with one free boundary and one fixed boundary which is subject to the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition and Neumann boundary condition, respectively. The longtime behaviors has been proved to be governed by a spreading-vanishing dichotomy in \cite{LL}, and when spreading happens, the spreading speed is determined in \cite{LLW}. In this paper, by constructing some subtle upper and lower solutions, as well as employing some detailed analysis, we improve the results in \cite{LLW} and obtain the sharp asymptotic spreading profiles, which show the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition and Neumann boundary condition imposed at the fixed boundary $x=0$ lead to the same asymptotic behaviors of $h(t)$ and $(u,v)$ near the spreading front $h(t)$.

Abstract:We consider the Cauchy problem for the generalized Fornberg-Whitham equation with dissipation. This is one of the nonlinear, nonlocal and dispersive-dissipative equations. The main topic of this paper is an asymptotic analysis for the solutions to this problem. We prove that the solution to this problem converges to the modified heat kernel. Moreover, we construct the second term of asymptotics for the solutions depending on the degree of the nonlinearity. In view of those second asymptotic profiles, we investigate the effects of the dispersion, dissipation and nonlinear terms on the asymptotic behavior of the solutions.

Abstract:We consider a nonlinear plate equation with thermal memory effects due to non-Fourier heat flux laws. First we prove the existence and uniqueness of global solutions as well as the existence of a global attractor. Then we use a suitable Łojasiewicz–Simon type inequality to show the convergence of global solutions to single steady states as time goes to infinity under the assumption that the nonlinear term f is real analytic. Moreover, we provide an estimate on the convergence rate.

Abstract:In this article, we investigate the existence, uniqueness, and asymptotic behaviors of mild solutions of a parabolic evolution equations on complex plane, in which the diffusion operator has the form $\overline{\Box}_{\varphi} = \overline{D}\, \overline{D}^{\ast}$, where $\overline{D} f = \bar{\partial}f + \varphi_{\bar{z}} f$, the function $\varphi$ is smooth and subharmonic on $\mathbb{C}$, and $\overline{D}^{\ast}$ is the formal adjoint of $\overline{D}$. Our method combines certain estimates of heat kernel associating with the homogeneous linear equation of Raich \cite{raich06} and a fixed point argument.

We first introduce the stable and unstable sets for the equation and prove that the problem has a potential well structure. Next, we investigate the global asymptotic behavior of the solutions. In particular, we study the behavior of the global solutions that intersect neither with the stable set nor the unstable set. Finally, we prove that global solutions have $L^{\infty}$-uniform bound under some natural conditions.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the thermoelastic response of a functionally graded thin plate with an analytical approach. The governing equations are derived in the context of the Lord and Shulman theory (L–S theory), where the material properties of the thin plate are assumed to be graded along the lengthwise direction according to a power law distribution. An asymptotic approach based on the layer method and the Laplace transform technique is presented to deal with these nonlinear governing equations, and then the closed-form solutions of displacement, temperature and stresses, induced by a sudden temperature rise at the boundary, are derived. The propagation of each wave, as well as the distributions of each physical field, are plotted and discussed. The comparison is also conducted to evaluate the effect of characteristic parameter, including the thermal relaxation time and the power law index, on thermoelastic response.

Abstract:We consider the heat equation in a straight strip, subject to a combination of Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. We show that a switch of the respective boundary conditions leads to an improvement of the decay rate of the heat semigroup of the order of $t^{-1/2}$. The proof employs similarity variables that lead to a non-autonomous parabolic equation in a thin strip contracting to the real line, that can be analyzed on weighted Sobolev spaces in which the operators under consideration have discrete spectra. A careful analysis of its asymptotic behaviour shows that an added Dirichlet boundary condition emerges asymptotically at the switching point, breaking the real line in two half-lines, which leads asymptotically to the 1/2 gain on the spectral lower bound, and the $t^{-1/2}$ gain on the decay rate in the original physical variables. This result is an adaptation to the case of strips with twisted boundary conditions of previous results by the authors on geometrically twisted Dirichlet tubes.

Abstract:The asymptotic behaviour of the solutions of three-dimensional nonlinear elastodynamics in a thin plate is studied, as the thickness $h$ of the plate tends to zero. Under appropriate scalings of the applied force and of the initial values in terms of $h$, it is shown that three-dimensional solutions of the nonlinear elastodynamic equation converge to solutions of the time-dependent von Kármán plate equation.
