Abstract:In this paper we first study local phase diagram of an abstract parabolic differential equation in a Banach space such that the equation possesses an invariance structure under a local Lie group action. Next we use this abstract result to study a free boundary problem modeling the growth of non-necrotic tumors in the presence of inhibitors. This problem contains two reaction-diffusion equations describing the diffusion of the nutrient and the inhibitor, respectively, and an elliptic equation describing the distribution of the internal pressure. There is also an equation for the surface tension to govern the movement of the free boundary. By first performing some reduction processes to write this free boundary problem into a parabolic differential equation in a Banach space, and next using a new center manifold theorem established recently by Cui [8], and the abstract result mentioned above, we prove that under suitable conditions the radial stationary solution is locally asymptotically stable under small non-radial perturbations, and when these conditions are not satisfied then such a stationary solution is unstable. In the second case we also give a description of local phase diagram of the equation in a neighborhood of the radial stationary solution and construct its stable and unstable manifolds. In particular, we prove that in the unstable case, if the transient solution exists globally and is contained in a neighborhood of the radial stationary solution, then the transient solution will finally converge to a nearby radial stationary solution uniquely determined by the initial data.

Abstract:In this paper we study a free boundary problem modeling the growth of tumors with fluid-like tissue under the action of inhibitors. The model includes two elliptic equations describing the concentration of nutrients and inhibitors, respectively, and a Stokes equation for the fluid velocity and internal pressure. By employing the functional approach, analytic semigroup theory and Cui's local phase theorem for parabolic differential equations with invariance, we prove that if a radial stationary solution is asymptotically stable under radial perturbations, then there exists a non-negative threshold value gamma(*) such that if gamma > gamma(*), then it keeps asymptotically stable under non-radial perturbations. While if 0 < gamma < gamma(*), then the radial stationary solution is unstable and, in particular, there exists a center-stable manifold such that if the transient solution exists globally and is contained in a sufficiently small neighborhood of the radial stationary solution, then it converges exponentially to this radial stationary solution (modulo translations) and its translation lies on the center-stable manifold. The result indicates an interesting phenomenon that an increasing inhibitor uptake has a positive effect on the tumor's treatment and can promote the tumor's stability.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate positive solutions of the degenerate parabolic equation not in divergence form: ut=upΔu+auq−bur, subject to the null Dirichlet boundary condition. We at first discuss the existence and nonexistence of global solutions to the problem, and then study the large time behavior for the global solutions. When the positive source dominates the model, we prove that the global solutions uniformly tend to the positive steady state of the problem as t→∞. In particular, we establish the uniform asymptotic profiles for the decay solutions when the problem is governed by the nonlinear diffusion or absorption.

Abstract:This paper deals with the free boundary problem for a parabolic equation, $u_t-u_{xx}=u^{p}-\lambda |u_x|^{q}$, $t>0$, $01$. It is well known that global existence or blowup of solutions of nonlinear parabolic equations depends on which one dominating the model, the source or absorption, and on the absorption coefficient for the balance case of them. The aim of the paper is to study the influence of p, q, initial data and free boundary on the asymptotic behavior of solutions. At first, the ecological meaning of this model is explained by deriving the equation and the free boundary condition. Then, local existence and uniqueness are discussed, and the continuous dependence on initial data and comparison principle are proved. Furthermore, the finite time blowup and global solution are given by constructing sub- and super-solutions. In the case of $ p>q>1 $, our results show that the solution blows up in finite time for the initial value sufficiently large; but if the initial data are small, there exist global fast solutions which decay exponentially. Also, with a suitable initial value, the existence of global slow solution with at most polynomial decaying is established. While, in the case of $q\ge p>1$, all solutions with nonnegative initial data of exponential decay exist globally. Abstract:This paper concerns the sharp asymptotic profiles of the solution of a diffusive epidemic model with one free boundary and one fixed boundary which is subject to the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition and Neumann boundary condition, respectively. The longtime behaviors has been proved to be governed by a spreading-vanishing dichotomy in \cite{LL}, and when spreading happens, the spreading speed is determined in \cite{LLW}. In this paper, by constructing some subtle upper and lower solutions, as well as employing some detailed analysis, we improve the results in \cite{LLW} and obtain the sharp asymptotic spreading profiles, which show the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition and Neumann boundary condition imposed at the fixed boundary $x=0$ lead to the same asymptotic behaviors of $h(t)$ and $(u,v)$ near the spreading front $h(t)$.

Abstract:We consider the asymptotic behavior of solutions to the convection-diffusion equation: \[ \partial_t u - \mathrm{div}\left(a(x)\nabla u\right) = d\cdot\nabla \left(\left\lvert u\right\rvert ^{q-1}u\right),\ \ x\in\mathbb{R}^n, \ t>0 \] with an integrable initial data $u_{0}(x)$, where $n\ge1$, $q>1+\frac{1}{n}$ and $d\in \mathbb{R}^{n}$. Moreover, we take $a(x)=1+b(x)>0$, where $b(x)$ is smooth and decays fast enough at spatial infinity. It is known that the asymptotic profile of the solution to this problem can be given by the heat kernel. Moreover, some higher-order asymptotic expansions of the solution have already been studied. In particular, the structures of the second asymptotic profiles strongly depend on the nonlinear exponent $q$. More precisely, these profiles have different decay orders in each of the following three cases: $1+\frac{1}{n}<q<1+\frac{2}{n}$; $q=1+\frac{2}{n}$; $q>1+\frac{2}{n}$. In this paper, we focus on the critical case $q=1+\frac{2}{n}$. By analyzing the corresponding integral equation in details, we have succeeded to give the more higher-order asymptotic expansion of the solution, which generalizes the previous works.

Through successive transformations, an integral representation of the problem is obtained that involves a system of coupled nonlinear integral equations. Abstract:We consider the Cauchy problem for the generalized Fornberg-Whitham equation with dissipation. This is one of the nonlinear, nonlocal and dispersive-dissipative equations. The main topic of this paper is an asymptotic analysis for the solutions to this problem. We prove that the solution to this problem converges to the modified heat kernel. Moreover, we construct the second term of asymptotics for the solutions depending on the degree of the nonlinearity. In view of those second asymptotic profiles, we investigate the effects of the dispersion, dissipation and nonlinear terms on the asymptotic behavior of the solutions.

Abstract:We study the reaction diffusion equation with a monostable nonlinear function over a changing interval , viewed as a model for the spreading of a species with population range and density . The free boundaries and are not governed by the same Stefan condition as in Du and Lin [20] and other previous works; instead, they satisfy a related but different set of equations obtained from a 'preferred population density' assumption at the range boundary, which allows the population range to shrink. We obtain a rather complete understanding of the longtime dynamics of the model, which exhibits persistent propagation with a finite asymptotic propagation speed determined by a certain semi-wave solution, and the density function converges to the semi-wave profile as time goes to infinity. The asymptotic propagation speed is always smaller than that of the corresponding classical Cauchy problem where the reaction-diffusion equation is satisfied for over the entire real line with no free boundary. Moreover, when the preferred population density used in the free boundary condition converges to 0, the solution of our free boundary problem converges to the solution of the corresponding classical Cauchy problem, and the propagation speed also converges to that of the Cauchy problem.

Abstract:We consider the Cauchy problem for one-dimensional p-system with damping of space-dependent coefficient. This system models the compressible flow through porous media in the Lagrangean coordinate. Our concern is an asymptotic behavior of solutions, which is expected to be the diffusion wave based on the Darcy law. To show this expectation, the problem is reformulated to the Cauchy problem for the second order quasilinear hyperbolic equation with space dependent damping, which is analyzed by the energy method.

Abstract:We consider the asymptotic behavior of solutions to the Cauchy problem for a dispersive-dissipative equation with a cubic nonlinearity. It is known that the leading term of the asymptotic profile for the solution to this problem is the Gaussian. Moreover, by analyzing the corresponding integral equation, the higher-order asymptotic expansion for the solution to the linear part and the first asymptotic profile for the Duhamel term have already been obtained. In this paper, we construct the second asymptotic profile for the Duhamel term and give the more detailed higher-order asymptotic expansion of the solutions, which generalizes the previous works. Furthermore, we emphasize that the new obtained higher-order asymptotic profiles have a good structure in the sense of satisfying the parabolic self-similarity.

Abstract:We investigate positive steady states of an indefinite superlinear reaction-diffusion equation arising from population dynamics, coupled with a nonlinear boundary condition. Both the equation and the boundary condition depend upon a positive parameter $\lambda$, which is inversely proportional to the diffusion rate. We establish several multiplicity results when the diffusion rate is large and analyze the asymptotic profiles and the stability properties of these steady states as the diffusion rate grows to infinity. In particular, our results show that in some cases bifurcation from zero and from infinity occur at $\lambda=0$. Our approach combines variational and bifurcation techniques.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the convergence to sharp traveling waves of solutions with semi-compactly supported initial data for Burgers-Fisher-KPP equations with degenerate diffusion. We characterize the motion of the free boundary in the long-time asymptotic of the solution to Cauchy problem and the convergence to sharp traveling wave with almost exponential decay rates. Here a key difficulty lies in the intrinsic presence of nonlinear advection effect. After providing the analysis of the nonlinear advection effect on the asymptotic propagation speed of the free boundary, we construct sub- and super-solutions with semi-compact supports to estimate the motion of the free boundary. The new method overcomes the difficulties of the non-integrability of the generalized derivatives of sharp traveling waves at the free boundary.

The system is motivated by our study of grain boundary dynamics, especially under the non-isothermal environments. To obtain the long time behavior of the solutions, in particular, the exponential decay, the kinematic structures of the systems are investigated using novel reinterpretation of the classical entropy method.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to study the existence and extinction of weak solutions of the initial and boundary value problem for ut=div((|u|σ(x,t)+d0)|∇u|p(x,t)−2∇u)+f(x,t,u). First, the authors apply the method of parabolic regularization and Galerkin’s method to prove the existence of solutions to the problem mentioned and then obtain the comparison principle by arguing by contradiction. Furthermore, the authors prove that the solution vanishes in finite time and approaches 0 in L2(Ω) norm as t→∞.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to study the asymptotic behavior of the time-dependent solutions to a coupled system of reaction-diffusion equations with periodic coefficients in unbounded domains, including the whole space R-n, the exterior Omega(e) of a bounded domain and the half-space R-+(n) = {x = (x(1), . . . , x(n)) is an element of R-n; x(n) > 0}, under Dirichlet boundary conditions. It is shown that if the reaction function in the system possesses a mixed quasi monotone property and the corresponding periodic system has a pair of coupled upper and lower solutions then the periodic system has a pair of quasi-solutions and the sector between the quasi-solutions is an attractor of the system of periodic reaction-diffusion equations. Under some additional conditions this attractor leads to the asymptotic stability of a periodic solution for the periodic system. The approach to the problem is based on the method of upper and lower solutions, a ladder argument and a bootstrap technique. Finally, a competitor-competitor-mutualist model is given to illustrate the obtained results.
