Abstract:We present a conceptually clear introduction to quantum theory at a level suitable for exceptional high-school students. It is entirely self-contained and no university-level background knowledge is required. The lectures were given over four days, four hours each day, as part of the International Summer School for Young Physicists (ISSYP) at Perimeter Institute, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. On the first day the students were given all the relevant mathematical background from linear algebra and probability theory. On the second day, we used the acquired mathematical tools to define the full quantum theory in the case of a finite Hilbert space and discuss some consequences such as entanglement, Bell's theorem and the uncertainty principle. Finally, on days three and four we presented an overview of advanced topics related to infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces, including canonical and path integral quantization, the quantum harmonic oscillator, quantum field theory, the Standard Model, and quantum gravity.

Abstract:Quantum field theory has formed the conceptual framework of most of physics for more than sixty years. It incorporates a complete revision of our conception of the nature of matter and existence itself. Yet it is rarely taught, or even mentioned, in introductory physics---from high school, college, and university survey courses through upper-division "modern physics" courses. This omission is not necessary: This paper describes an approach through which the fundamental concepts and consequent insights of quantum field theory can be grasped, building upon familiar notions from classical and quantum mechanics.

Abstract:The goal of these lectures is to introduce readers with a basic knowledge of undergraduate physics (specifically non-relativistic quantum mechanics, special relativity, and electromagnetism) to the `current theory of everything': the Standard Model of particle of physics. By the end of the course, readers should be able to make predictions for simple processes at the Large Hadron Collider, such as decay rates of the Higgs boson. Abstract:The discovery of atomic nucleus by E. Rutherford, at the beginning of the twentieth century, was the Nuclear Physics original landmark. From then, a series of experiments in which beams of particles composed of neutrons, protons and others, brought to collide with a nucleus in order to unravel its structure or produce artificial elements through nuclear transmutation, were triggered. With the development of experimental equipment, a number of other nuclear phenomena have been observed, such as beta decay, nuclear fission and fusion, M\"oesbauer effect, etc. In view of the global political and economic landscape and the contemporary educational trends, this work suggest alternative topics in nuclear physics that can be discussed at the conceptual level in high school teaching, where the main focus lies in the historical and technological importance of such phenomena in society.

Abstract:Recent achievements in nuclear forces theory open new perspectives for the next decade of low energy nuclear physics, bringing together people from very different communities. Although many developments remain to be done, the possibility to directly use QCD to describe nuclear system is a major challenge that is within reach. In this introduction to the 2009 International Joliot-Curie School (EJC2009), new trends in the strong nuclear interaction are summarized starting from quarks and ending with finite or infinite nuclear systems. At different energy scales, selected new concepts and ideas have been discussed in a rather simple way. Recent advances in the theory of nuclear forces, thanks to chiral perturbation and effective field theories, have led to a new generation of strong nuclear interaction particularly suited to low energy nuclear physics. The interesting aspects of new interactions compared to conventional forces are underlined. Recent achievements in ab initio theories that directly start from the bare nucleon-nucleon interaction and their key role to understand the three-body force are illustrated. Finally, future perspectives for standard nuclear physics theories, namely Shell Model and Energy Density Functional, are discussed.

Abstract:Two major recent developments in theory and computational resources created the favorable conditions for achieving a microscopic description of fission dynamics in classically allowed regions of the collective potential energy surface, almost eighty years after its discovery in 1939 by Hahn and Strassmann [1]. The first major development was in theory, the extension of the Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TDDFT) [2–5] to superfluid fermion systems [6]. The second development was in computing, the emergence of powerful enough supercomputers capable of solving the complex systems of equations describing the time evolution in three dimensions without any restrictions of hundreds of strongly interacting nucleons. Thus the conditions have been created to renounce phenomenological models and incomplete microscopic treatments with uncontrollable approximations and/or assumptions in the description of the complex dynamics of fission. Even though the available nuclear energy density functionals (NEDFs) are phenomenological still, their accuracy is improving steadily and the prospects of being able to perform calculations of the nuclear fission dynamics and to predict many properties of the fission fragments, otherwise not possible to extract from experiments.

Abstract:Quantum Field Theory provides a theoretical framework for understanding fields and the particles associated with them, and is the basis of particle physics and condensed matter research. This graduate level textbook provides a comprehensive introduction to quantum field theory, giving equal emphasis to operator and path integral formalisms. It covers modern research such as helicity spinors, BCFW construction and generalized unitarity cuts; as well as treating advanced topics including BRST quantization, loop equations, and finite temperature field theory. Various quantum fields are described, including scalar and fermionic fields, Abelian vector fields and Quantum ElectroDynamics (QED), and finally non-Abelian vector fields and Quantum ChromoDynamics (QCD). Applications to scattering cross sections in QED and QCD are also described. Each chapter ends with exercises and an important concepts section, allowing students to identify the key aspects of the chapter and test their understanding.

Abstract:Over the last decade, new developments in Similarity Renormalization Group techniques and nuclear many-body methods have dramatically increased the capabilities of ab initio nuclear structure and reaction theory. Ground and excited-state properties can be computed up to the tin region, and from the proton to the presumptive neutron drip lines, providing unprecedented opportunities to confront two- plus three-nucleon interactions from chiral Effective Field Theory with experimental data. In this contribution, I will give a broad survey of the current status of nuclear many-body approaches, and I will use selected results to discuss both achievements and open issues that need to be addressed in the coming decade.

Abstract:Atomic nuclei are quantum many-body systems of protons and neutrons held together by strong nuclear forces. Under the proper conditions, nuclei can break into two (sometimes three) fragments which will subsequently decay by emitting particles. This phenomenon is called nuclear fission. Since different fission events may produce different fragmentations, the end-products of all fissions that occurred in a small chemical sample of matter comprise hundreds of different isotopes, including α particles, together with a large number of emitted neutrons, photons, electrons and antineutrinos. The extraordinary complexity of this process, which happens at length scales of the order of a femtometer, mostly takes less than a femtosecond but is not entirely over until all the lingering β decays have completed – which can take years – is a fascinating window into the physics of atomic nuclei. While fission may be more naturally known in the context of its technological applications, it also plays a crucial role in the synthesis of heavy elements in astrophysical environments. In both cases, simulations are needed for the many systems or energies inaccessible to experiments in the laboratory. In this context, the level of accuracy and precision required poses formidable challenges to nuclear theory. The goal of this article is to provide a comprehensive overview of the theoretical methods employed in the description of nuclear fission.

This will lead to new insights and predictions for systems ranging from dense non-equilibrium matter, to low-energy nuclear structure and reactions, to high-energy collisions. Abstract:The Institute of Physics New Quantum Curriculum consists of freely available online learning and teaching materials (<a class="link-external link-http" href="http://quantumphysics.iop.org" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>) for a first course in university quantum mechanics starting from two-level systems. This approach immediately immerses students in inherently quantum mechanical aspects by focusing on experiments that have no classical explanation. It allows from the start a discussion of interpretive aspects of quantum mechanics and quantum information theory. This article gives an overview of the resources available at the IOP website. The core text is presented as around 80 articles co-authored by leading experts that are arranged in themes and can be used flexibly to provide a range of alternative approaches. Many of the articles include interactive simulations with accompanying activities and problem sets that can be explored by students to enhance their understanding. Much of the linear algebra needed for this approach is part of the resource. Solutions to activities are available to instructors. The resources can be used in a variety of ways from supplements to existing courses to a complete programme.

The Development of Elementary Quantum Theory from 1900 to 1927

Abstract:Planck's introduction of the quantum of action in 1900 was followed by 25 years of trial and error in quest of the understanding of the quantum world; different ideas and directions had to be pursued until the path leading to the elementary quantum theory was discovered. Radical changes away from traditional perceptions about natural phenomena were necessary, the entire system of basic concepts in classical physics had to be abandoned and replaced by a new mode of thought. Continuity and determinism of classical laws were no longer applicable on the quantum scale, where dynamical behaviour proceeds by discontinuous and statistical quantum transitions. Albert Einstein laid the essential foundations for the new concept; Max Born made the decisive step further leading to the breakthrough in 1925. The development of the ideas, which eventually resulted in the elementary quantum theory in 1925/26, will be described, relying on original publications and letters written during that period in time by the major contributors. The fundamental laws of Quantum Theory derived by Max Born and Pascual Jordan may mathematically be represented in many different ways, and particular emphasis is given to the distinction between physical content and mathematical representation.

Abstract:(transcript of a talk given by Prof.~Feshbach:) Nuclear physics has been and will be a major factor in science and technology. It makes unique and important contributions to medicine, to industry and to other sciences. Interaction with other physics has been strong. Astrophysics and mesoscopic physics are notable examples. But what I shall talk about today are labeled {\bf``universals"}. This refers to results which transcend the limits of a given subject providing fundamental principles which inform not only nuclear physics but all of science. It is the universals which take nuclear physics research from the parochial albeit fascinating studies of nuclear reactions and structure to the development and formulation of concepts of significance for all of the physical sciences.
Nuclear Quantum Many-Body Dynamics: From Collective Vibrations to Heavy-Ion Collisions

Abstract:A summary of recent researches on nuclear dynamics with realistic microscopic quantum approaches is presented. The Balian-Vénéroni variational principle is used to derive the time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) equation describing the dynamics at the mean-field level, as well as an extension including small-amplitude quantum fluctuations which is equivalent to the time-dependent random-phase approximation (TDRPA). Such formalisms as well as their practical implementation in the nuclear physics framework with modern three-dimensional codes are discussed. Recent applications to nuclear dynamics, from collective vibrations to heavy-ion collisions are presented. A particular attention is devoted to the interplay between collective motions and internal degrees of freedom. For instance, the harmonic nature of collective vibrations is questioned. Nuclei are also known to exhibit superfluidity due to pairing residual interaction. Extensions of the theoretical approach to study such pairing vibrations are now available. Large amplitude collective motions are investigated in the framework of heavy-ion collisions leading, for instance, to the formation of a compound system. How fusion is affected by the internal structure of the collision partners, such as their deformation, is discussed. Other mechanisms in competition with fusion, and responsible for the formation of fragments which differ from the entrance channel (transfer reactions, deep-inelastic collisions, and quasi-fission) are investigated. Finally, studies of actinide collisions forming, during very short times of few zeptoseconds, the heaviest nuclear systems available on Earth, are presented.

Abstract:I will review recent progress in our understanding of the nuclear force. In the course of the 1990's, so-called high-precision, charge-dependent nucleon-nucleon potentials have been constructed which are, essentially, phenomenological models. These potentials are now commonly used as input for exact few-body calculations and microscopic nuclear many-body theory. I will critically analyses those models and point out their strenghts and weaknesses. Particular emphasis will be on charge dependence. Other recent research was conducted on a more basic level: understanding the nuclear force in terms of the fundamental theory of strong interactions, QCD. Predictions from this sector are typically qualitative in nature. Thus, the main problem of the current status in the field is that quantitative models for the nuclear force have a poor theoretical background, while theory based models yield poor results. The chief challenge for the new millenium is to overcome this discrepancy. Chiral effective field theory may be a suitable tool to solve the problem.
