Abstract:The inverse problem of X-tray transforms considers reconstructing functions from some data that are easier to measure, which is typically the integral of that function along geodesics. We prove that if the domain has a foliation structure, then this reconstruction process is possible on certain function classes.

Abstract:In this paper, we use Aleksandrov's reflection principle to prove symmetry of solutions to F(∇Sn2u+uI)=f(u,u2+|∇Snu|2), where u is the support function of a convex body, and F is a function of principal radii. As a corollary, alongside [Ivaki, arXiv:2307.06252], we provide an alternative proof of the uniqueness of solution to the isotropic Gaussian-Minkowski problem.

Abstract:An integral geometry problem is considered on a family of n‐dimensional surfaces of revolution whose vertices lie on a hyperplane and directions of symmetry axes are fixed and orthogonal to this plane, in Rn+1 . More precisely, the reconstruction of a function f(x,y) , x∈Rn , y∈R , from the integrals of the form f(x,y)dx extended over a chosen side of all surfaces of revolution of a given family is investigated. Unlike the usual Radon transform, the integrals considered here are not taken with respect to the surface area element. A Fourier slice identity and a backprojection‐type inversion formula are obtained with a method based on the Fourier and Hankel transforms. The reconstruction procedure and some analytical and numerical implementations of the obtained inversion formulas in the cases of n=1 and n=2 are provided.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the inverse problem of determining an unknown function defined in three space dimensions from its geodesic X-ray transform. The standard X-ray transform is defined on the Euclidean metric and is given by the integration of a function along straight lines. The geodesic X-ray transform is the generalization of the standard X-ray transform in Riemannian manifolds and is defined by integration of a function along geodesics. This paper is motivated by Uhlmann and Vasy's theoretical reconstruction algorithm for geodesic X-ray transform and mathematical formulation for traveltime tomography to develop a novel numerical algorithm for the stated goal. Our numerical scheme is based on a Neumann series approximation and a layer stripping approach. In particular, we will first reconstruct the unknown function by using a convergent Neumann series for each small neighborhood near the boundary. Once the solution is constructed on a layer near the boundary, we repeat the same procedure for the next layer, and continue this process until the unknown function is recovered on the whole domain. One main advantage of our approach is that the reconstruction is localized, and is therefore very efficient, compared with other global approaches for which the reconstructions are performed on the whole domain. We illustrate the performance of our method by showing some test cases including the Marmousi model. Finally, we apply this method to a travel time tomography in 3D, in which the inversion of the geodesic X-ray transform is one important step, and present several numerical results to validate the scheme.

Abstract:We study the inverse problem of unique recovery of a complex-valued scalar function V:M×C→C, defined over a smooth compact Riemannian manifold (M,g) with smooth boundary, given the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map, in a suitable sense, for the elliptic semi-linear equation −Δgu+V(x,u)=0. We show that uniqueness holds for a large class of non-linearities when the manifold is conformally transversally anisotropic. The proof is constructive and is based on a multiple-fold linearization of the semi-linear equation near complex geometric optic solutions for the linearized operator and the resulting non-linear interactions. These interactions result in the study of a weighted integral transform along geodesics, that we call the Jacobi weighted ray transform.

Abstract:We propose and study several inverse boundary problems associated with a quasilinear hyperbolic equation of the form ${c(x)^{-2}}\partial_t^2u=\Delta_g(u+F(x, u))+G(x, u)$ on a compact Riemannian manifold $(M, g)$ with boundary. We show that if $F(x, u)$ is monomial and $G(x, u)$ is analytic in $u$, then $F, G$ and $c$ as well as the associated initial data can be uniquely determined and reconstructed by the corresponding hyperbolic DtN (Dirichlet-to-Neumann) map. Our work leverages the construction of proper Gaussian beam solutions for quasilinear hyperbolic PDEs as well as their intriguing applications in conjunction with light-ray transforms and stationary phase techniques for related inverse problems. The results obtained are also of practical importance in assorted of applications with nonlinear waves.

Abstract:We use adiabatic limits to study foliated manifolds. The Bott connection naturally shows up as the adiabatic limit of Levi-Civita connections. As an application, we then construct certain natural elliptic operators associated to the foliation and present a direct geometric proof of a vanshing theorem of Connes[Co], which extends the Lichnerowicz vanishing theorem [L] to foliated manifolds with spin leaves, for what we call almost Riemannian foliations. Several new vanishing theorems are also proved by using our method.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal F$ be a foliation on a smooth projective surface $S$ over the complex number $\mathbb{C}$. We introduce three birational non-negative invariants $c_1^2(\mathcal F)$, $c_2(\mathcal F)$ and $\chi(\mathcal F)$, called the Chern numbers. If the foliation $\mathcal F$ is not of general type, the first Chern number $c_1^2(\mathcal F)=0$, and $c_2(\mathcal F)=\chi(\mathcal F)=0$ except when $\mathcal F$ is induced by a non-isotrivial fibration of genus $g=1$. If $\mathcal F$ is of general type, we obtain a slope inequality when $\mathcal F$ is algebraically integral. As a corollary, $\mathcal F$ is always transcendental if the slope is less than $2$. On the other hand, we also prove three sharp Noether type inequalities if $\mathcal F$ is of general type. As applications, we obtain a criterion for foliations to be transcendental using Noether type inequalities, and we also give a partial positive answer to the question on the lower bound on the volume of a foliation of general type.

Abstract:In this paper we show the invertibility of the geodesic X-ray transform on one forms and 2-tensors on asymptotically conic manifolds, up to the natural obstruction, allowing existence of certain kinds of conjugate points. We use the 1-cusp pseudodifferential operator algebra and its semiclassical foliation version introduced and used by Vasy and Zachos, who showed the same type invertibility on functions.The complication of the invertibility of the tensorial X-ray transform, compared with X-ray transform on functions, is caused by the natural kernel of the transform consisting of 'potential tensors'. We overcome this by arranging a modified solenoidal gauge condition, under which we have the invertibility of the X-ray transform.

Veering triangulations and transverse foliations

Abstract:We present a combinatorial approach to the existence of foliations and contact structures transverse to a given pseudo-Anosov flow. Let $\varphi$ be a transitive pseudo-Anosov flow on a closed oriented 3-manifold. Our main technical result is that every codimension 1 foliation transverse to $\varphi$ is carried by a single branched surface coming from a veering triangulation. Combined with recent breakthrough work of Massoni, this reduces the existence problem for transverse foliations to something like the feasibility of a system of inequalities (rather than equations!) over $Homeo_+([0,1])$. As a proof of concept, we show that for the hyperbolic, fibered, non-L-space knot $10_{145}$, the natural pseudo-Anosov flow on the slope $s$ Dehn surgery admits a transverse foliation for $s\in (-\infty, 3)$, but does not admit such a foliation for $s\in [5,\infty)$. The negative result is part of a more general Milnor--Wood type phenomenon which puts limitations on some well known methods for constructing taut foliations on Dehn surgeries.

Abstract:We study the uniqueness of solutions in inverse scattering problems, focusing on the inversion of geometric parameters of quadric surfaces, e.g., ellipsoidal surfaces. We delve into the necessary observational conditions required to ensure the uniqueness of solutions in bistatic observation scenarios and analyze various typical radar observation modes. Numerical results validate our conclusions. This study contributes to the understanding of solution uniqueness in inverse scattering problems and lay the groundwork for future investigations into the robustness of these solutions.

Abstract:The inverse problem of special geometry (Seiberg-Witten geometry of 4d N=2 SCFT) asks for a recursive construction of all such geometries in rank $r$ by assembling together known lower-rank ``strata''. This leads to a program to understand/construct/classify all special geometries which looks surprising effective. After reviewing some advanced topics in special geometry, in this long note we define the inverse problem and introduce the basic tools of the trade. The program is essentially completed in rank 2, and we pave the way to proceed to higher ranks. A central role is played by various notions of geometric rigidity: in addition to the obvious one (triviality of the conformal manifold), Falting-Saito-Peters rigidity and Deligne-Simpson rigidity also enter in the story.

Formation of Trapped Surfaces in Geodesic Foliation

Abstract:We revisit the classical results of the formation of trapped surfaces for the Einstein vacuum equation relying on the geodesic foliation, rather than the double null foliation used in all previous results, starting with the seminal work of Christodoulou \cite{Chr1} and continued in \cite{KRodn}, \cite{An}, \cite{AnLuk}, \cite{KLR}, \cite{An1}. The main advantage of the method is that it only requires information on the incoming curvature along the incoming initial null hypersurface. The result is based on a version of the non-integrable PT frame introduced in \cite{KS:Kerr} and \cite{GKS}, associated to the geodesic foliation.

InverseVis: Revealing the Hidden with Curved Sphere Tracing

Abstract:Exploratory analysis of scalar fields on surface meshes presents significant challenges in identifying and visualizing important regions, particularly on the surface's backside. Previous visualization methods achieved only a limited visibility of significant features, i.e., regions with high or low scalar values, during interactive exploration. In response to this, we propose a novel technique, InverseVis, which leverages curved sphere tracing and uses the otherwise unused space to enhance visibility. Our approach combines direct and indirect rendering, allowing camera rays to wrap around the surface and reveal information from the backside. To achieve this, we formulate an energy term that guides the image synthesis in previously unused space, highlighting the most important regions of the backside. By quantifying the amount of visible important features, we optimize the camera position to maximize the visibility of the scalar field on both the front and backsides. InverseVis is benchmarked against state-of-the-art methods and a derived technique, showcasing its effectiveness in revealing essential features and outperforming existing approaches.

Abstract:In this article, the shape inverse problem for the two-dimensional unsteady Stokes flow has been presented. We employ Piola transformation to bypass the divergence free condition for the flow and prove the differentiability of the solution to the initial boundary value problem. For the approximate solution of the ill-posed and nonlinear problem, we propose a regularized Gauss-Newton method. Abstract:In this paper, we consider the shape inverse problem of a body immersed in the incompressible fluid governed by thermodynamic equations. By applying the domain derivative method, we obtain the explicit representation of the derivative of solution with respect to the boundary, which plays an important role in the inverse design framework. Moreover, according to the boundary parametrization technique, we present a regularized Gauss-Newton algorithm for the shape reconstruction problem. Abstract:Thin nematic elastomers, composite hydrogels and plant tissues are among many systems that display uniform anisotropic deformation upon external actuation. In these materials, the spatial orientation variation of a local director field induces intricate global shape changes. Despite extensive recent efforts, to date, there is no general solution to the inverse design problem: how to design a director field that deforms exactly into a desired surface geometry upon actuation, or whether such a field exists. In this work, we phrase this inverse problem as a hyperbolic system of differential equations. We prove that the inverse problem is locally integrable, provide an algorithm for its integration, and derive bounds on global solutions. We classify the set of director fields that deform into a given surface, thus paving the way to finding optimized fields.

Abstract:Under consideration is a nonlinear transport equation containing two nonlinearities and a coefficient of a lower-order nonlinear term depending on two or three space variables. We study the direct problem with the data on a part of the lateral surface of a cylindrical domain, explicitly construct a solution, and prove the uniqueness of the solution. Also, we state the problem of recovering the coefficient on some information about a solution to the direct problem and demonstrate that the inverse problem reduces to an X-ray tomography problem. This opens a way to its efficient numerical solution.
