On minimal coverings of groups by proper normalizers

Abstract:For a group $G$, a {\it normalizer covering} of $G$ is a finite set of proper normalizers of some subgroups of $G$ whose union is $G$. We study $p$-groups ($p$ a prime) without a normalizer covering. As an application, we determine some non-nilpotent groups having a nilpotent normalizer covering.

Abstract:Given a finite group $G$, we say that $G$ has weak normal covering number $\gamma_w(G)$ if $\gamma_w(G)$ is the smallest integer with $G$ admitting proper subgroups $H_1,\ldots,H_{\gamma_w(G)}$ such that each element of $G$ has a conjugate in $H_i$, for some $i\in \{1,\ldots,\gamma_w(G)\}$, via an element in the automorphism group of $G$. We prove that the weak normal covering number of every non-abelian simple group is at least $2$ and we classify the non-abelian simple groups attaining $2$. As an application, we classify the non-abelian simple groups having normal covering number $2$. We also show that the weak normal covering number of an almost simple group is at least two up to one exception. We determine the weak normal covering number and the normal covering number of the almost simple groups having socle a sporadic simple group. Using similar methods we find the clique number of the invariably generating graph of the almost simple groups having socle a sporadic simple group.

Abstract:For any group G, let C(G) denote the intersection of the normal- izers of centralizers of all elements of G. Set C0 = 1. Define Ci+1(G)=Ci(G) = C(G=Ci(G)) for i ? 0. By C1(G) denote the terminal term of the ascending series. In this paper, we show that a finitely generated group G is nilpotent if and only if G = Cn(G) for some positive integer n.

In 1974 Herzog and Schonheim conjectured that if A = {aiGi} k=1 is a partition of G then the (finite) indices n1 = (G : G1),... ,nk = (G : Gk) cannot be pairwise distinct. In this paper we show that if A covers all the elements of G the same number of times and G1,... ,Gk are subnormal subgroups of G not all equal to G, then M = max16j6k |{1 6 i 6 k: ni = nj}| is not less than the smallest prime divisor of n1 ···nk, moreover min16i6k log ni = O(M log 2 M) where the O-constant is absolute.

Abstract:In the current paper we study the groups, whose subnormal abelian subgroups are normal. We obtained a quite detailed description of such hyperabelian groups with a periodic Baer radical. The description of hyperabelian Lie algebras, whose abelian subideals are ideals, is also obtained.

Abstract:This paper deals with combinatorial aspects of finite covers of groups by cosets or subgroups. Let a1G1,…,akGkbe left cosets in a group G such that [Formula: see text] covers each element of G at least m times but none of its proper subsystems does. We show that if G is cyclic, or G is finite and G1,…,Gkare normal Hall subgroups of G, then the inequality [Formula: see text] holds, where [Formula: see text] if p1,…,prare distinct primes and α1,…,αrare nonnegative integers. When all the aiare the identity element of G and all the Giare subnormal in G, we prove that there is a composition series from [Formula: see text] to G whose factors are of prime orders. The paper also includes some other results and two challenging conjectures.

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime and $\mathbb{F}_p$ be a finite field of $p$ elements. Let $\mathbb{F}_pG$ denote the group algebra of the finite $p$-group $G$ over the field $\mathbb{F}_p$ and $V(\mathbb{F}_pG)$ denote the group of normalized units in $\mathbb{F}_pG$. Suppose that $G$ is a finite $p$-group given by a central extension of the form $$1\longrightarrow \mathbb{Z}_{p^n}\times \mathbb{Z}_{p^m} \longrightarrow G \longrightarrow \mathbb{Z}_p\times \cdots\times \mathbb{Z}_p \longrightarrow 1$$ and $G'\cong \mathbb{Z}_p$, $n, m\geq 1$ and $p$ is odd. In this paper, the structure of $G$ is determined. And the relations of $V(\mathbb{F}_pG)^{p^l}$ and $G^{p^l}$, $\Omega_l(V(\mathbb{F}_pG))$ and $\Omega_l(G)$ are given. Furthermore, there is a direct proof for $V(\mathbb{F}_pG)^p\bigcap G=G^p$.

Abstract:Let ℱ be a class of groups and G a finite group. We call a set Σ of subgroups of G a G-covering subgroup system for ℱ if G ∈ ℱ whenever Σ ⊆ ℱ. For a non-identity subgroup H of G, we put Σ H be some set of subgroups of G which contains at least one supplement in G of each maximal subgroup of H. Let p ≠ q be primes dividing |G|, P, and Q be non-identity a p-subgroup and a q-subgroup of G, respectively. We prove that Σ P and Σ P ∪ Σ Q are G-covering subgroup systems for many classes of finite groups.

Abstract:We give a normalizer decomposition for a p-local compact group (S, F, L) that describes |L| as a homotopy colimit indexed over a finite poset. Our work generalizes the normalizer decompositions for finite groups due to Dwyer, for p-local finite groups due to Libman, and for compact Lie groups in separate work due to Libman. Our approach gives a result in the Lie group case that avoids topological subtleties with Quillen's Theorem A, because we work with discrete groups. We compute the normalizer decomposition for the p-completed classifying spaces of U(p) and SU(p) and for the p-compact groups of Aguade and Zabrodsky.

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime number and suppose that every maximal subgroup of a finite group is either $p$-nilpotent or has prime index. Such group need not be $p$-solvable, and we study its structure by proving that only one nonabelian simple group of order divisible by $p$, which belongs to the family ${\rm PSL}_n(q)$, can be involved in it. For $p=2$, we specify more, and in fact, such simple group must be isomorphic to ${\rm PSL}_2({r^a})$ for certain values of the prime $r$ and the parameter $a$.

Abstract:Fixed point ratios for primitive permutation groups have been extensively studied. Relying on a recent work of Burness and Guralnick, we obtain further results in the area. For a prime $p$ and a finite group $G$, we use fixed point ratios to study the number of Sylow $p$-subgroups of $G$ and the minimal size of a covering by proper subgroups of the set of $p$-elements of $G$.
