Abstract:In this paper we study several stronger forms of sensitivity for continuous surjective selfmaps on compact metric spaces and relations between them. The main result of the paper states that a minimal system is either multi-sensitive or an almost one-to-one extension of its maximal equicontinuous factor, which is an analog of the Auslander-Yorke dichotomy theorem. For minimal dynamical systems, we also show that all notions of thick sensitivity, multi-sensitivity and thickly syndetical sensitivity are equivalent, and all of them are much stronger than sensitivity.

Abstract:This paper introduces the notion of multi-sensitivity with respect to a vector within the context of non-autonomous dynamical systems on uniform spaces and provides insightful results regarding N-sensitivity and strongly multi-sensitivity, along with their behaviors under various conditions. The main results established are as follows: (1) For a k-periodic nonautonomous dynamical system on a Hausdorff uniform space (S,U), the system (S,fk∘⋯∘f1) exhibits N-sensitivity (or strongly multi-sensitivity) if and only if the system (S,f1,∞) displays N-sensitivity (or strongly multi-sensitivity). (2) Consider a finitely generated family of surjective maps on uniform space (S,U). If the system (S,f1,∞) is N-sensitive, then the system (S,fk,∞) is also N-sensitive. When the family f1,∞ is feebly open, the converse statement holds true as well. (3) Within a finitely generated family on uniform space (S,U), N-sensitivity (and strongly multi-sensitivity) persists under iteration. (4) We present a sufficient condition under which an nonautonomous dynamical system on infinite Hausdorff uniform space demonstrates N-sensitivity.

Sensitivity Lower Bounds for Approximaiton Algorithms

Abstract:Sensitivity measures how much the output of an algorithm changes, in terms of Hamming distance, when part of the input is modified. While approximation algorithms with low sensitivity have been developed for many problems, no sensitivity lower bounds were previously known for approximation algorithms. In this work, we establish the first polynomial lower bound on the sensitivity of (randomized) approximation algorithms for constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs) by adapting the probabilistically checkable proof (PCP) framework to preserve sensitivity lower bounds. From this, we derive polynomial sensitivity lower bounds for approximation algorithms for a variety of problems, including maximum clique, minimum vertex cover, and maximum cut. Given the connection between sensitivity and distributed algorithms, our sensitivity lower bounds also allow us to recover various round complexity lower bounds for distributed algorithms in the LOCAL model. Additionally, we present new lower bounds for distributed CSPs.

Abstract:Based on a recent characterization of nested canalyzing function (NCF), we obtain the formula of the sensitivity of any NCF. Hence we find that any sensitivity of NCF is between $\frac{n+1}{2}$ and $n$. Both lower and upper bounds are tight. We prove that the block sensitivity, hence the $l$-block sensitivity, is same to the sensitivity. It is well known that monotone function also has this property. We eventually find all the functions which are both monotone and nested canalyzing (MNCF). The cardinality of all the MNCF is also provided.

Abstract:First notions of relative complexity function and relative sensitivity are introduced. It turns out that for any open factor map pi : (X, T) -> (Y, S) between topological dynamical systems with minimal (Y, S), pi is positively equicontinuous if and only if the relative complexity function is bounded for each open cover of X; and that any non-trivial weakly mixing extension is relatively sensitive. Moreover, a relative version of the notable result that any M-system is sensitive if it is not minimal is obtained. Then notions of relative scattering and relative Mycielski's chaos are introduced. A relative disjointness theorem involving relative scattering is given. A relative version of the well-known result that any non-trivial scattering topological dynamical system is Li-Yorke chaotic is proved.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the weak mean metric and give some properties by replacing the Besicovitch pseudometric with weak mean metric in the definition of mean equicontinuity and mean sensitivity. We study an opposite side of weak mean equicontinuity, strong mean sensitivity and we obtain a version of Auslander-Yorke dichotomies: minimal topological dynamical systems are either weak mean equicontinuous or strong mean sensitive, and transitive topological dynamical systemss are either almost weak mean equicontinuous or strong mean sensitive. Furthermore, motivated by the localized idea of sensitivity, we introduce some notions of new version sensitive tuples and study the properties of these sensitive tuples, we show that a transitive dynamical system is strong mean sensitive if and only if it admits a strong mean sensitive tuple. Finally, We introduce the notions of weakly mean equicontinuity of a topological dynamical system respect to a given continuous function $f$, and we show that a topological dynamical system is weakly mean equicontinuity then it is weakly mean equicontinuity with respect to every continuous function.

Abstract:Sensitivity \cite{CD82,CDR86} and block sensitivity \cite{Nisan91} are two important complexity measures of Boolean functions. A longstanding open problem in decision tree complexity, the "Sensitivity versus Block Sensitivity" question, proposed by Nisan and Szegedy \cite{Nisan94} in 1992, is whether these two complexity measures are polynomially related, i.e., whether $bs(f)=O(s(f)^{O(1)})$. We prove an new upper bound on block sensitivity in terms of sensitivity: $bs(f) \leq 2^{s(f)-1} s(f)$. Previously, the best upper bound on block sensitivity was $bs(f) \leq (\frac{e}{\sqrt{2\pi}}) e^{s(f)} \sqrt{s(f)}$ by Kenyon and Kutin \cite{KK}. We also prove that if $\min\{s_0(f),s_1(f)\}$ is a constant, then sensitivity and block sensitivity are linearly related, i.e. $bs(f)=O(s(f))$.

Abstract:In this paper, we perform sensitivity analysis for the maximal value function which is the optimal value function for a parametric maximization problem. Our aim is to study various subdifferentials for the maximal value function. We obtain upper estimates of Fréchet, limiting, and horizon subdifferentials of the maximal value function by using some sensitivity analysis techniques sophisticatedly. The derived upper estimates depend only on the union of all solutions and not on its convex hull or only one solution from the solution set. Finally, we apply the derived results to develop some new necessary optimality conditions for nonconvex minimax problems. In the nonconvex-concave setting, our Wolfe duality approach compare favourably with the first order approach in that the necessary condition is sharper and the constraint qualification is weaker.

Abstract:In this paper firstly we construct for each m is an element of N \ {1} a weakly mixing system which is (1, . . . , m - 1)-sensitive but not (1, . . . , m - 1, m)-sensitive, and a minimal system which is (1, 2)-sensitive but not (1, 2, 3)-sensitive.It is known that Delta-(1, 2) transitivity implies weak mixing. We will show that, though (a, b)-transitivity implies total transitivity for all a, b is an element of N, for a general vector a is an element of N-r, r is an element of N, Delta-a transitivity implies weak mixing if and only if the vector a satisfies certain conditions. Furthermore, we prove that this difference will disappear for measurable systems, that is, for measure-theoretical setting multi-ergodicity is equivalent to weak mixing.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that there exists a monoid, on which neither the syndetic property nor the dual syndetic property holds, and there exists a strongly mixing semi-flow with this monoid action which does not have thick sensitivity, syndetic sensitivity, thickly syndetic sensitivity, or thickly periodical sensitivity. Meanwhile, we show that there exists a thickly sensitive cascade which is not multi-sensitive. The first result answers positively Question 2, and the first and the second results answer negatively Question 3 in [A. Miller, A note about various types of sensitivity in general semiflows, Appl. Gen. Topol., 2018].

Abstract:In optimal control,sensitivity relations are usually understood as inclusions that identify the pair formed by the dual arc and the Hamiltonian, evaluated along the associated minimizing trajectory, as a suitable generalized gradient of the value function. In this paper, sensitivity relations are obtained for the Mayer problem associated with the differential inclusion $\dot x\in F(x)$ and applied to derive optimality conditions. Our first application concerns the maximum principle and consists in showing that a dual arc can be constructed for every element of the superdifferential of the final cost. As our second application, with every nonzero limiting gradient of the value function at some point $(t,x)$ we associate a family of optimal trajectories at $(t,x)$ with the property that families corresponding to distinct limiting gradients have empty intersection.

Abstract:For an invariant measure µ in a topological dynamics, notions of µ-sensitivity, µ-complexity and µ-equicontinuity are introduced and investigated. It turns out that µ-sensitivity defined here is equivalent to pairwise sensitivity defined by Cadre and Jacob. For an ergodic µ, µ-equicontinuity, no µ-complexity pair and non-µ-sensitivity are equivalent, which implies minimality and equicontinuity when restricted to the support. Moreover, the notion of µ-sensitive set is introduced, it is shown that a transitive system with an ergodic measure of full support has zero topological entropy if there is no uncountable µ-sensitive set, and a non-minimal transitive system with dense minimal points has infinite sequence entropy for some sequence.

Abstract:For a positive definite Lagrangian, the minimal measure was defined in terms of first homology or cohomology class. For a configuration manifold that has a larger fundamental group than its first homology group, it makes a difference to define minimal measure in terms of path in fundamental group. Unlike Mather measures that are supported only on the level set not below the Mañé critical value in autonomous case, it is found in this paper that newly defined minimal measures are supported on the level sets not only above but also below the Mañé critical value. In particular, the support of the measure for a commutator looks like a figure of four petals that persists when the energy crosses the critical value.

Abstract:To link the Auslander point dynamics property with topological transitivity, in this paper we introduce dynamically compact systems as a new concept of a chaotic dynamical system (X,T) given by a compact metric space X and a continuous surjective self-map T:X → X. Observe that each weakly mixing system is transitive compact, and we show that any transitive compact M-system is weakly mixing. Then we discuss the relationships among it and other several stronger forms of sensitivity. We prove that any transitive compact system is Li-Yorke sensitive and furthermore multi-sensitive if it is not proximal, and that any multi-sensitive system has positive topological sequence entropy. Moreover, we show that multi-sensitivity is equivalent to both thick sensitivity and thickly syndetic sensitivity for M-systems. We also give a quantitative analysis for multi-sensitivity of a dynamical system.

Abstract:We prove that nested canalizing functions are the minimum-sensitivity Boolean functions for any given activity ratio and we characterize the sensitivity boundary which has a nontrivial fractal structure. We further observe, on an extensive database of regulatory functions curated from the literature, that this bound severely constrains the robustness of biological networks. Our findings suggest that the accumulation near the "edge of chaos" in these systems is a natural consequence of a drive towards maximum stability while maintaining plasticity in transcriptional activity.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a regular curve and $n$ be a positive integer such that for every nonempty open set $U\subset X$, there is a nonempty connected open set $V\subset U$ with the cardinality $|\partial_X(V)|\leq n$. We show that if $X$ admits a sensitive action of a group $G$, then $G$ contains a free subsemigroup and the action has positive geometric entropy. As a corollary, $X$ admits no sensitive nilpotent group action.
A Tight Lower Bound on Certificate Complexity in Terms of Block Sensitivity and Sensitivity

Abstract:Sensitivity, certificate complexity and block sensitivity are widely used Boolean function complexity measures. A longstanding open problem, proposed by Nisan and Szegedy, is whether sensitivity and block sensitivity are polynomially related. Motivated by the constructions of functions which achieve the largest known separations, we study the relation between 1-certificate complexity and 0-sensitivity and 0-block sensitivity. Previously the best known lower bound was $C_1(f)\geq \frac{bs_0(f)}{2 s_0(f)}$, achieved by Kenyon and Kutin. We improve this to $C_1(f)\geq \frac{3 bs_0(f)}{2 s_0(f)}$. While this improvement is only by a constant factor, this is quite important, as it precludes achieving a superquadratic separation between $bs(f)$ and $s(f)$ by iterating functions which reach this bound. In addition, this bound is tight, as it matches the construction of Ambainis and Sun up to an additive constant.
