Abstract:We show how to use symbolic dynamics of Schreier graphs to embed the Grigorchuk group into a simple torsion group of intermediate growth and to construct uncountably many growth types of simple torsion groups.

Abstract:For any primitive substitution whose Perron eigenvalue is Pisot unit, we construct a domain exchange measurably conjugated to the subshift. And we give a condition for the subshift to be a finite extension of a torus translation. For the particular case of weakly irreducible Pisot substitution, we show that the subshift is either a finite extension of a torus translation, either a power of the subshift is weakly mixing. And we provide an algorithm to compute eigenvalues of the subshift associated to any primitive pseudo-unimodular substitution.

Abstract:We introduce a class of subshifts governed by finitely many two-sided infinite words. We call these words leading sequences. We show that any locally constant cocycle over such a subshift is uniform. From this we obtain Cantor spectrum of Lebesgue measure zero for associated Jacobi operators if the subshift is aperiodic. Our class covers all simple Toeplitz subshifts as well as all Sturmian subshifts. We apply our results to the spectral theory of Schreier graphs for uncountable families of groups acting on rooted trees.

The structure of low complexity subshifts

Abstract:An idea that became unavoidable to study zero entropy symbolic dynamics is that the dynamical properties of a system induce in it a combinatorial structure. An old problem addressing this intuition is finding a structure theorem for linear-growth complexity subshifts using the S-adic formalism. It is known as the S-adic conjecture and motivated several influential results in the theory. In this article, we completely solve the conjecture by providing an S-adic structure for this class. Our methods extend to nonsuperlinear-complexity subshifts. An important consequence of our main results is that these complexity classes gain access to the S-adic machinery. We show how this provides a unified framework and simplified proofs of several known results, including the pioneering 1996 Cassaigne's Theorem.

Medvedev degrees of subshifts on groups

Abstract:The Medvedev degree of a subshift is a dynamical invariant of computable origin that can be used to compare the complexity of subshifts that contain only uncomputable configurations. We develop theory to describe how these degrees can be transferred from one group to another through algebraic and geometric relations, such as quotients, subgroups, translation-like actions and quasi-isometries. We use the aforementioned tools to study the possible values taken by this invariant on subshifts of finite type on some finitely generated groups. We obtain a full classification for some classes, such as virtually polycyclic groups and branch groups with decidable word problem. We also show that all groups which are quasi-isometric to the hyperbolic plane admit SFTs with nonzero Medvedev degree. Furthermore, we provide a classification of the degrees of sofic subshifts for several classes of groups.

Abstract:We study symbolic dynamical representations of actions of the first Grigorchuk group $G$, namely its action on the boundary of the infinite rooted binary tree, its representation in the topological full group of a minimal substitutive $\mathbb{Z}$-shift, and its representation as a minimal system of Schreier graphs. We show that the first system admits an SFT cover, and the latter two systems are conjugate to sofic subshifts on $G$, but are not of finite type.

Abstract:We prove that non-elementary hyperbolic groups grow exponentially more quickly than their infinite index quasiconvex subgroups. The proof uses the classical tools of automatic structures and Perron–Frobenius theory. We also extend the main result to relatively hyperbolic groups and cubulated groups. These extensions use the notion of growth tightness and the work of Dahmani, Guirardel and Osin on rotating families.

Abstract:We provide a survey of results from symbolic dynamics and algebraic topology relating to Grout, a new user-friendly program developed to calculate combinatorial properties and topological invariants of a large class of symbolic substitutions. We study their subshifts (and related spaces) with an emphasis on examples of computations. We implement a check to verify that no counterexample exists to the so-called "strong coincidence conjecture" for a large number of substitutions on three and four letters.

Abstract:Given an inverse semigroup $G_0$ of bounded type, we show, along with some other assumptions, that if the set of incompressible elements of $G_0$ is finite, then any finitely generated subgroup $G$ of the topological full group $\mathsf{F}(G_0)$ that is orbit equivalent to $G_0$ has subexponential growth with a bounded power in the exponent.

Abstract:We obtain the following embedding theorem for symbolic dynamical systems. Let G be a countable amenable group with the comparison property. Let X be a strongly aperiodic subshift over G. Let Y be a strongly irreducible shift of finite type over G that has no global period, meaning that the shift action is faithful on Y. If the topological entropy of X is strictly less than that of Y and Y contains at least one factor of X, then X embeds into Y. This result partially extends the classical result of Krieger when and the results of Lightwood when for . The proof relies on recent developments in the theory of tilings and quasi-tilings of amenable groups.

Expanders and growth of normal subsets in finite simple groups of Lie type

Abstract:We show that some classical results on expander graphs imply growth results on normal subsets in finite simple groups. As one application, it is shown that given a nontrivial normal subset $ A $ of a finite simple group $ G $ of Lie type of bounded rank, we either have $ G \setminus \{ 1 \} \subseteq A^2 $ or $ |A^2| \geq |A|^{1+\epsilon} $, for $ \epsilon > 0 $. This improves a result of Gill, Pyber, Short and Szabó, and partially resolves a question of Pyber from the Kourovka notebook. We also propose a variant of Gowers' trick for two subsets, and give applications to products of large subsets in groups of Lie type, improving some results of Larsen, Shalev and Tiep.

Abstract:We prove that the product of a subset and a normal subset inside any finite simple non‐abelian group G grows rapidly. More precisely, if A and B are two subsets with B normal and neither of them is too large inside G , then |AB|⩾|A||B|1−ε where ε>0 can be taken arbitrarily small. This is a somewhat surprising strengthening of a theorem of Liebeck, Schul, and Shalev.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a connected semisimple real algebraic group. We prove the continuity of limit cones along deformations of Anosov subgroups of $G$ under a certain convexity assumption. This convexity assumption turns out to be necessary. We discuss an application to the notion of sharpness of an action of a discrete subgroup on a non-Riemannian homogeneous space. We also obtain that growth indicators and certain critical exponents vary continuously in the space of Anosov representations.

On the growth of actions of free products

Abstract:If $G$ is a finitely generated group and $X$ a $G$-set, the growth of the action of $G$ on $X$ is the function that measures the largest cardinality of a ball of radius $n$ in the Schreier graph $\Gamma(G,X)$. In this note we consider the following stability problem: if $G,H$ are finitely generated groups admitting a faithful action of growth bounded above by a function $f$, does the free product $G \ast H$ also admit a faithful action of growth bounded above by $f$? We show that the answer is positive under additional assumptions, and negative in general. In the negative direction, our counter-examples are obtained with $G$ either the commutator subgroup of the topological full group of a minimal and expansive homeomorphism of the Cantor space; or $G$ a Houghton group. In both cases, the group $G$ admits a faithful action of linear growth, and we show that $G\ast H$ admits no faithful action of subquadratic growth provided $H$ is non-trivial. In the positive direction, we describe a class of groups that admit actions of linear growth and is closed under free products and exhibit examples within this class, among which the Grigorchuk group.

Abstract:We give a lower bound on the growth of a subshift based on a simple condition on the set of forbidden patterns defining that subshift. Aubrun et Al. showed a similar result based on the Lovász Local Lemma for subshift over any countable group and Bernshteyn extended their approach to deduce, amongst other things, some lower bound on the exponential growth of the subshift. However, our result has a simpler proof, is easier to use for applications, and provides better bounds on the applications from their articles (although it is not clear that our result is stronger in general). In the particular case of subshift over $\mathbb{Z}$ a similar but weaker condition given by Miller was known to imply nonemptiness of the associated shift. Pavlov used the same approach to provide a condition that implied exponential growth. We provide a version of our result for this particular setting and it is provably strictly stronger than the result of Pavlov and the result of Miller (and, in practice, leads to considerable improvement in the applications). We also apply our two results to a few different problems including strongly aperiodic subshifts, nonrepetitive subshifts, and Kolmogorov complexity of subshifts.

Confined subgroups in groups with contracting elements

Abstract:In this paper, we study the growth of confined subgroups through boundary actions of groups with contracting elements. We establish that the growth rate of a confined subgroup is strictly greater than half of the ambient growth rate in groups with purely exponential growth. Along the way, several results are obtained on the Hopf decomposition for boundary actions of subgroups with respect to conformal measures. In particular, we prove that confined subgroups are conservative, and examples of subgroups with nontrivial Hopf decomposition are constructed. We show a connection between Hopf decomposition and quotient growth and provide a dichotomy on quotient growth of Schreier graphs for subgroups in hyperbolic groups.
