Abstract:In this note we prove the following results: $\bullet$ If a finitely presented group $G$ admits a strongly aperiodic SFT, then $G$ has decidable word problem. More generally, for f.g. groups that are not recursively presented, there exists a computable obstruction for them to admit strongly aperiodic SFTs. $\bullet$ On the positive side, we build strongly aperiodic SFTs on some new classes of groups. We show in particular that some particular monster groups admits strongly aperiodic SFTs for trivial reasons. Then, for a large class of group $G$, we show how to build strongly aperiodic SFTs over $\mathbb{Z}\times G$. In particular, this is true for the free group with 2 generators, Thompson's groups $T$ and $V$, $PSL_2(\mathbb{Z})$ and any f.g. group of rational matrices which is bounded.

Realizability of Subgroups by Subshifts of Finite Type

Abstract:We study the problem of realizing families of subgroups as the set of stabilizers of configurations from a subshift of finite type (SFT). This problem generalizes both the existence of strongly and weakly aperiodic SFTs. We show that a finitely generated normal subgroup is realizable if and only if the quotient by the subgroup admits a strongly aperiodic SFT. We also show that if a subgroup is realizable, its subgroup membership problem must be decidable. The article also contains the introduction of periodically rigid groups, which are groups for which every weakly aperiodic subshift of finite type is strongly aperiodic. We conjecture that the only finitely generated periodically rigid groups are virtually $\mathbb{Z}$ groups and torsion-free virtually $\mathbb{Z}^2$ groups. Finally, we show virtually nilpotent and polycyclic groups satisfy the conjecture.

Homomorphisms from aperiodic subshifts to subshifts with the finite extension property

Abstract:Given a countable group $G$ and two subshifts $X$ and $Y$ over $G$, a continuous, shift-commuting map $\phi : X \to Y$ is called a homomorphism. Our main result states that if every finitely generated subgroup of $G$ has polynomial growth, $X$ is aperiodic, and $Y$ has the finite extension property (FEP), then there exists a homomorphism $\phi : X \to Y$. By combining this theorem with a previous result of Bland, we obtain that if the same conditions hold, and if additionally the topological entropy of $X$ is less than the topological entropy of $Y$ and $Y$ has no global period, then $X$ embeds into $Y$. We also establish some facts about subshifts with the FEP that may be of independent interest.

Abstract:We prove that the lamplighter group admits strongly aperiodic SFTs, has undecidable tiling problem, and the entropies of its SFTs are exactly the upper semicomputable nonnegative real numbers, and some other results. These results follow from two relatively general simulation theorems, which show that for a large class of effective subshifts on the sea-level subgroup, their induction to the lamplighter group is sofic; and the pullback of every effective Cantor system on the integers admits an SFT cover. We exhibit a concrete strongly aperiodic set with $1488$ tetrahedra. We show that metabelian Baumslag-Solitar groups are intersimulable with lamplighter groups, and thus we obtain the same characterization for their entropies.

Weakly and Strongly Aperiodic Subshifts of Finite Type on Baumslag-Solitar Groups

Abstract:We study the periodicity of subshifts of finite type (SFT) on Baumslag-Solitar groups. We show that for residually finite Baumslag-Solitar groups there exist both strongly and weakly-but-not-strongly aperiodic SFTs. In particular, this shows that unlike $\mathbb{Z}^2$, but like $\mathbb{Z}^3$, strong and weak aperiodic SFTs are different classes of SFTs in residually finite BS groups. More precisely, we prove that a weakly aperiodic SFT on BS(m,n) due to Aubrun and Kari is, in fact, strongly aperiodic on BS(1,n); and weakly but not strongly aperiodic on any other BS(m,n). In addition, we exhibit an SFT which is weakly but not strongly aperiodic on BS(1,n); and we show that there exists a strongly aperiodic SFT on BS(n,n).

Abstract:Let be a group and a subgroup. The free extension of an -subshift to is the -subshift whose configurations are those for which the restriction to every coset of is a configuration from . We study the case of for infinite and finitely generated groups and . On the one hand, we show that if is nonamenable and has decidable word problem, then the free extension to of any -subshift which is effectively closed is a sofic -subshift. On the other hand, we prove that if both and are amenable, there are always -subshifts which are effectively closed by patterns whose free extension to is non-sofic. We also present a few applications in the form of a new simulation theorem and a new class of groups which admit strongly aperiodic SFTs.

Abstract:In our article in MCU'2013 we state the the Domino problem is undecidable for all Baumslag-Solitar groups $BS(m,n)$, and claim that the proof is a direct adaptation of the construction of a weakly aperiodic subshift of finite type for $BS(m,n)$ given in the paper. In this addendum, we clarify this point and give a detailed proof of the undecidability result. We assume the reader is already familiar with the article in MCU'2013.

Abstract:We show that the domino problem is undecidable on orbit graphs of non-deterministic substitutions which satisfy a technical property. As an application, we prove that the domino problem is undecidable for the fundamental group of any closed orientable surface of genus at least 2.

Abstract:An avoshift is a subshift where for each set $C$ from a suitable family of subsets of the shift group, the set of all possible valid extensions of a globally valid pattern on $C$ to the identity element is determined by a bounded subpattern. This property is shared (for various families of sets $C$) by for example cellwise quasigroup shifts, TEP subshifts, and subshifts of finite type with a safe symbol. In this paper we concentrate on avoshifts on polycyclic groups, when the sets $C$ are what we call ``inductive intervals''. We show that then avoshifts are a recursively enumerable subset of subshifts of finite type. Furthermore, we can effectively compute lower-dimensional projective subdynamics and certain factors (avofactors), and we can decide equality and inclusion for subshifts in this class. These results were previously known for group shifts, but our class also covers many non-algebraic examples as well as many SFTs without dense periodic points. The theory also yields new proofs of decidability of inclusion for SFTs on free groups, and SFTness of subshifts with the topological strong spatial mixing property.

On a Rice theorem for dynamical properties of SFTs on groups

Abstract:Let $G$ be a group with undecidable domino problem (such as $\mathbb{Z}^2$). We prove the undecidability of all nontrivial dynamical properties for sofic $G$-subshifts, that such a result fails for SFTs, and an undecidability result for dynamical properties of $G$-SFTs similar to the Adian-Rabin theorem. For $G$ amenable we prove that topological entropy is not computable from presentations of SFTs, and a more general result for dynamical invariants taking values in partially ordered sets.

The structure of low complexity subshifts

Abstract:An idea that became unavoidable to study zero entropy symbolic dynamics is that the dynamical properties of a system induce in it a combinatorial structure. An old problem addressing this intuition is finding a structure theorem for linear-growth complexity subshifts using the S-adic formalism. It is known as the S-adic conjecture and motivated several influential results in the theory. In this article, we completely solve the conjecture by providing an S-adic structure for this class. Our methods extend to nonsuperlinear-complexity subshifts. An important consequence of our main results is that these complexity classes gain access to the S-adic machinery. We show how this provides a unified framework and simplified proofs of several known results, including the pioneering 1996 Cassaigne's Theorem.

Abstract:In this article we study the automorphism group ${\rm Aut}(X,\sigma)$ of subshifts $(X,\sigma)$ of low word complexity. In particular, we prove that Aut$(X,\sigma)$ is virtually $\mathbb{Z}$ for aperiodic minimal subshifts and certain transitive subshifts with non-superlinear complexity. More precisely, the quotient of this group relative to the one generated by the shift map is a finite group. In addition, we show that any finite group can be obtained in this way. The class considered includes minimal subshifts induced by substitutions, linearly recurrent subshifts and even some subshifts which simultaneously exhibit non-superlinear and superpolynomial complexity along different subsequences. The main technique in this article relies on the study of classical relations among points used in topological dynamics, in particular, asymptotic pairs. Various examples that illustrate the technique developed in this article are provided. In particular, we prove that the group of automorphisms of a $d$-step nilsystem is nilpotent of order $d$ and from there we produce minimal subshifts of arbitrarily large polynomial complexity whose automorphism groups are also virtually $\mathbb{Z}$.

Abstract:We introduce a class of subshifts governed by finitely many two-sided infinite words. We call these words leading sequences. We show that any locally constant cocycle over such a subshift is uniform. From this we obtain Cantor spectrum of Lebesgue measure zero for associated Jacobi operators if the subshift is aperiodic. Our class covers all simple Toeplitz subshifts as well as all Sturmian subshifts. We apply our results to the spectral theory of Schreier graphs for uncountable families of groups acting on rooted trees.

Finding lower bounds on the growth and entropy of subshifts over countable groups

Abstract:We give a lower bound on the growth of a subshift based on a simple condition on the set of forbidden patterns defining that subshift. Aubrun et Al. showed a similar result based on the Lovász Local Lemma for subshift over any countable group and Bernshteyn extended their approach to deduce, amongst other things, some lower bound on the exponential growth of the subshift. However, our result has a simpler proof, is easier to use for applications, and provides better bounds on the applications from their articles (although it is not clear that our result is stronger in general). In the particular case of subshift over $\mathbb{Z}$ a similar but weaker condition given by Miller was known to imply nonemptiness of the associated shift. Pavlov used the same approach to provide a condition that implied exponential growth. We provide a version of our result for this particular setting and it is provably strictly stronger than the result of Pavlov and the result of Miller (and, in practice, leads to considerable improvement in the applications). We also apply our two results to a few different problems including strongly aperiodic subshifts, nonrepetitive subshifts, and Kolmogorov complexity of subshifts.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of a contractible subshift. This is a strengthening of the notion of strong irreducibility, where we require that the gluings are given by a block map. We show that a subshift is a retract of a full shift if and only if it is a contractible SFT with a fixed point. For virtually polycyclic groups, contractibility implies dense periodic points. We introduce a ``homotopy theory'' framework for working with this notion, and ``contractibility'' is in fact simply an analog of the usual contractibility in algebraic topology. We also explore the symbolic dynamical analogs of homotopy equivalence and equiconnectedness of subshifts. Contractibility is implied by the map extension property of Meyerovitch, and among SFTs, it implies the finite extension property of Briceño, McGoff and Pavlov. We include thorough comparisons with these classes. We also encounter some new group-geometric notions, in particular a periodic variant of Gromov's asymptotic dimension of a group.

Medvedev degrees of subshifts on groups

Abstract:The Medvedev degree of a subshift is a dynamical invariant of computable origin that can be used to compare the complexity of subshifts that contain only uncomputable configurations. We develop theory to describe how these degrees can be transferred from one group to another through algebraic and geometric relations, such as quotients, subgroups, translation-like actions and quasi-isometries. We use the aforementioned tools to study the possible values taken by this invariant on subshifts of finite type on some finitely generated groups. We obtain a full classification for some classes, such as virtually polycyclic groups and branch groups with decidable word problem. We also show that all groups which are quasi-isometric to the hyperbolic plane admit SFTs with nonzero Medvedev degree. Furthermore, we provide a classification of the degrees of sofic subshifts for several classes of groups.

Abstract:We study the relations between two groups related to cluster automorphism groups which are defined by Assem, Schiffler and Shamchenko. We establish the relationships among (strict) direct cluster automorphism groups and those groups consisting of periodicities of labeled seeds and exchange matrices, respectively, in the language of short exact sequences. As an application, we characterize automorphism-finite cluster algebras in the cases of bipartite seeds or finite mutation type. Finally, we study the relation between the group Aut(A) for a cluster algebra A and the group Aut(Mn) (S) for a mutation group M-n and a labeled mutation class S, and we give a negative answer via counter-examples to King and Pressland's problem.
