Abstract:In this paper we continue to investigate the systolic landscape of translation surfaces started in [CHMW]. We show that there is an infinite sequence of surfaces $(S_{g_k})_k$ of genus $g_k$, where $g_k \to \infty$ with large systoles. On the other hand we show that for hyperelliptic surfaces we can find a suitable homology basis, where a large number of loops that induce the basis are short.

Abstract:We study the systole of a model of random hyperbolic 3-manifolds introduced by Petri and Raimbault, answering a question posed in that same article. These are compact manifolds with boundary constructed by randomly gluing truncated tetrahedra along their faces. We prove that the limit, as the volume tends to infinity, of the expected value of their systole exists and we give a closed formula of it. Moreover, we compute a numerical approximation of this value.

Abstract:We obtain the exact values of the systoles of these hyperbolic surfaces of genus g with cyclic symmetry of the maximum order and the next maximum order. Precisely, for the genus g hyperbolic surface with order 4g + 2 cyclic symmetry, the systole is $$\left( {1 + \cos {{\rm{\pi }} \over {2g + 1}} + \cos {{2{\rm{\pi }}} \over {2g + 1}}} \right)$$ when g ⩾ 7, and for the genus g hyperbolic surface with order 4g cyclic symmetry, the systole is $$\left( {1 + 2\cos {{\rm{\pi }} \over {2g}}} \right)$$ when g ⩾ 4.

Abstract:In this paper we study the systoles of arithmetic hyperbolic 2- and 3-manifolds. Our first result is the construction of infinitely many arithmetic hyperbolic 2- and 3-manifolds which are pairwise noncommensurable, all have the same systole, and whose volumes are explicitly bounded. Our second result fixes a positive number x and gives an upper bound for the least volume of an arithmetic hyperbolic 2- or 3-manifold whose systole is greater than x. We conclude by determining, for certain small values of x, the least volume of a principal arithmetic hyperbolic 2-manifold over Q or 3-manifold over Q(i) whose systole is greater than x.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the asymptotic behavior of the non-simple systole, which is the length of a shortest non-simple closed geodesic, on a random closed hyperbolic surface on the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_g$ of Riemann surfaces of genus $g$ endowed with the Weil-Petersson measure. We show that as the genus $g$ goes to infinity, the non-simple systole of a generic hyperbolic surface in $\mathcal{M}_g$ behaves exactly like $\log g$.

Abstract:A basic feature of Teichmüller theory of Riemann surfaces is the interplay of two dimensional hyperbolic geometry, the behavior of geodesic-length functions and Weil-Petersson geometry. Let $\mathcal{T}_g$ $(g\geq 2)$ be the Teichmüller space of closed Riemann surfaces of genus $g$. Our goal in this paper is to study the gradients of geodesic-length functions along systolic curves. We show that their $L^p$ $(1\leq p \leq \infty)$-norms at every hyperbolic surface $X\in \mathcal{T}_g$ are uniformly comparable to $\ell_{sys}(X)^{\frac{1}{p}}$ where $\ell_{sys}(X)$ is the systole of $X$. As an application, we show that the minimal Weil-Petersson holomorphic sectional curvature at every hyperbolic surface $X\in \mathcal{T}_g$ is bounded above by a uniform negative constant independent of $g$, which negatively answers a question of M. Mirzakhani. Some other applications to the geometry of $\mathcal{T}_g$ will also be discussed.

Abstract:The systole of a contact form $\alpha$ is defined as the shortest period of closed Reeb orbits of $\alpha$. Given a non-trivial $\mathbb S^1$-principal bundle over $\mathbb S^2$ with total space $M$, we prove a sharp systolic inequality for the class of tight contact form on $M$ invariant under the $\mathbb S^1$-action. This inequality exhibits a behavior which depends on the Euler class of the bundle in a subtle way. As applications, we prove a sharp systolic inequality for rotationally symmetric Finsler metrics on $\mathbb S^2$, a systolic inequality for the shortest contractible closed Reeb orbit, and a particular case of a conjecture by Viterbo.

Abstract:We give an elementary proof of a weak variant of the homotopy type conjecture from [Gel04]. The proof relies on Belolipetskys estimate on the systole in terms of the volume which is a consequence of Prasads volume formula. In particular we extend the estimate established in [B20] for hyperbolic manifolds to general arithmetic manifolds.

Abstract:We show that for each $n \geq 2$, the systoles of closed hyperbolic $n$-manifolds form a dense subset of $(0, +\infty)$. We also show that for any $n\geq 2$ and any Salem number $\lambda$, there is a closed arithmetic hyperbolic $n$-manifold of systole $\log(\lambda)$. In particular, the Salem conjecture holds if and only if the systoles of closed arithmetic hyperbolic manifolds in some (any) dimension fail to be dense in $(0, +\infty)$.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove an optimal systolic inequality and the corresponding rigidity in the equality case on closed manifolds with positive bi-Ricci curvature, which generalizes the work of Bray-Brendle-Neves. The proof is given in all dimensions based on the method of minimal surfaces under the Generic Regularity Hypothesis, which is known to be true up to dimension ten.

Abstract:Let $M$ be a closed orientable 3-manifold with scalar curvature greater than or equal to 1. If $M$ has nonvanishing second homotopy group, then it is known that the $\pi_2$-systole of $M$ (i.e. the minimal achievable area of homotopically nontrivial spheres) is at most $8\pi$. We prove the following gap theorem: if $M$ is further not a quotient of $S^2\times S^1$, then the $\pi_2$-systole of $M$ is no greater than an improved constant $c\approx 5.44\pi$. This statement follows as a new topological application of Huisken and Ilmanen's weak inverse mean curvature flow.

Abstract:Let $n$ be an integer with $3 \leq n \leq 7$, and let $g$ be a Riemannian metric on $B^2 \times T^{n-2}$ with scalar curvature at least $-n(n-1)$. We establish an inequality relating the systole of the boundary to the infimum of the mean curvature on the boundary. As a consequence, we obtain a new positive energy theorem where equality holds for the Horowitz-Myers metrics.

Abstract:For hyperbolic surfaces with geodesic boundary, we study the orthosystole, i.e. the length of a shortest essential arc from the boundary to the boundary. We recover and extend work by Bavard completely characterizing the surfaces maximizing the orthosystole in the case of a single boundary component. For multiple boundary components, we construct surfaces with large orthosystole and show that their orthosystole grows, as the genus goes to infinity, at the same rate as Bavard's upper bound.

Abstract:Multiplicative relations in the cohomology ring of a manifold impose constraints upon its stable systoles. Given a compact Riemannian manifold (X,g), its real homology H_*(X,R) is naturally endowed with the stable norm. Briefly, if h\in H_k(X,R) then the stable norm of h is the infimum of the Riemannian k-volumes of real cycles representing h. The stable k-systole is the minimum of the stable norm over nonzero elements in the lattice of integral classes in H_k(X,R). Relying on results from the geometry of numbers due to W. Banaszczyk, and extending work by M. Gromov and J. Hebda, we prove metric-independent inequalities for products of stable systoles, where the product can be as long as the real cup length of X.

Given $X\in \mathcal{M}_g$, let $\ell_X(\gamma_1)$ and $i(\gamma_1,\gamma_2)$ denote the length and geometric intersection number of a pair of closed geodesics on $X$, and let $$ I(X):=\sup \limits_{\gamma_1,\gamma_2} \frac{i(\gamma_1,\gamma_2)}{\ell_X(\gamma_1)\ell_X(\gamma_2)}. $$ We refer to $I(X)$ as the {\em interaction strength} on $X$, since it controls the best upper bound on $i(\gamma_1,\gamma_2)$ in terms of $\ell_X(\gamma_1)\ell_X(\gamma_2)$. It is easy to see that $I(X)<\infty$ and $I(X) \to \infty$ as $X \to \infty$ in $\mathcal{M}_g$. Our main result describes the exact asymptotic behaviour of $I(X)$ on $\mathcal{M}_g$: we show $$ I(X) \sim \frac{1}{2\operatorname{sys}(X)\log(\frac{1}{\operatorname{sys}(X)})}, $$ as $X \to \infty$ in $\mathcal{M}_g$. Here $\operatorname{sys}(X):=\inf \limits_{\gamma} \ell_X(\gamma)$ denotes the {\em systole} of $X$. We obtain a similar result for finite volume hyperbolic surfaces, provided we restrict attention to closed geodesics in a fixed compact subset of $X$. We also show: $$ \min \limits_{X \in \mathcal{M}_g} I(X) \asymp \frac{1}{(\log g)^2}; $$ in particular, the minimum of $I(X)$ over $\mathcal{M}_g$ tends to zero as $g \to \infty$.
