Abstract:We give an elementary proof of a weak variant of the homotopy type conjecture from [Gel04]. The proof relies on Belolipetskys estimate on the systole in terms of the volume which is a consequence of Prasads volume formula. In particular we extend the estimate established in [B20] for hyperbolic manifolds to general arithmetic manifolds.

Abstract:In this paper we study the systoles of arithmetic hyperbolic 2- and 3-manifolds. Our first result is the construction of infinitely many arithmetic hyperbolic 2- and 3-manifolds which are pairwise noncommensurable, all have the same systole, and whose volumes are explicitly bounded. Our second result fixes a positive number x and gives an upper bound for the least volume of an arithmetic hyperbolic 2- or 3-manifold whose systole is greater than x. We conclude by determining, for certain small values of x, the least volume of a principal arithmetic hyperbolic 2-manifold over Q or 3-manifold over Q(i) whose systole is greater than x.

Abstract:Multiplicative relations in the cohomology ring of a manifold impose constraints upon its stable systoles. Given a compact Riemannian manifold (X,g), its real homology H_*(X,R) is naturally endowed with the stable norm. Briefly, if h\in H_k(X,R) then the stable norm of h is the infimum of the Riemannian k-volumes of real cycles representing h. The stable k-systole is the minimum of the stable norm over nonzero elements in the lattice of integral classes in H_k(X,R). Relying on results from the geometry of numbers due to W. Banaszczyk, and extending work by M. Gromov and J. Hebda, we prove metric-independent inequalities for products of stable systoles, where the product can be as long as the real cup length of X.

Density of systoles of hyperbolic manifolds

Abstract:We show that for each $n \geq 2$, the systoles of closed hyperbolic $n$-manifolds form a dense subset of $(0, +\infty)$. We also show that for any $n\geq 2$ and any Salem number $\lambda$, there is a closed arithmetic hyperbolic $n$-manifold of systole $\log(\lambda)$. In particular, the Salem conjecture holds if and only if the systoles of closed arithmetic hyperbolic manifolds in some (any) dimension fail to be dense in $(0, +\infty)$.

Abstract:Let $M$ be a closed orientable 3-manifold with scalar curvature greater than or equal to 1. If $M$ has nonvanishing second homotopy group, then it is known that the $\pi_2$-systole of $M$ (i.e. the minimal achievable area of homotopically nontrivial spheres) is at most $8\pi$. We prove the following gap theorem: if $M$ is further not a quotient of $S^2\times S^1$, then the $\pi_2$-systole of $M$ is no greater than an improved constant $c\approx 5.44\pi$. This statement follows as a new topological application of Huisken and Ilmanen's weak inverse mean curvature flow.

Abstract:We study the systole of a model of random hyperbolic 3-manifolds introduced by Petri and Raimbault, answering a question posed in that same article. These are compact manifolds with boundary constructed by randomly gluing truncated tetrahedra along their faces. We prove that the limit, as the volume tends to infinity, of the expected value of their systole exists and we give a closed formula of it. Moreover, we compute a numerical approximation of this value.

Simple homotopy types of even dimensional manifolds

Abstract:Given a closed $n$-manifold, we consider the set of simple homotopy types of $n$-manifolds within its homotopy type, called its simple homotopy manifold set. We characterise it in terms of algebraic $K$-theory, the surgery obstruction map, and the homotopy automorphisms of the manifold. We use this to construct the first examples, for all $n \ge 4$ even, of closed $n$-manifolds that are homotopy equivalent but not simple homotopy equivalent. In fact, we construct infinite families with pairwise the same properties, and our examples can be taken to be smooth for $n \geq 6$. Our key examples are homotopy equivalent to the product of a circle and a lens space. We analyse the simple homotopy manifold sets of these manifolds, determining exactly when they are trivial, finite, and infinite, and investigating their asymptotic behaviour. The proofs involve integral representation theory and class numbers of cyclotomic fields. We also compare with the relation of $h$-cobordism, and produce similar detailed quantitative descriptions of the manifold sets that arise.

Abstract:Under mild topological restrictions, we obtain new linear upper bounds for the dimension of the mod $p$ homology (for any prime $p$) of a finite-volume orientable hyperbolic $3$ manifold $M$ in terms of its volume. A surprising feature of the arguments in the paper is that they require an application of the Four Color Theorem. If $M$ is closed, and either (a) $\pi_1(M)$ has no subgroup isomorphic to the fundamental group of a closed, orientable surface of genus $2, 3$ or $4$, or (b) $p = 2$, and $M$ contains no (embedded, two-sided) incompressible surface of genus $2, 3$ or $4$, then $\text{dim}\, H_1(M;F_p) < 157.763 \cdot \text{vol}(M)$. If $M$ has one or more cusps, we get a very similar bound assuming that $\pi_1(M)$ has no subgroup isomorphic to the fundamental group of a closed, orientable surface of genus $g$ for $g = 2, \dots,8$. These results should be compared with those of our previous paper $The\ ratio\ of\ homology\ rank\ to\ hyperbolic\ volume,\ I$, in which we obtained a bound with a coefficient in the range of $168$ instead of $158$, without a restriction on surface subgroups or incompressible surfaces. In a future paper, using a much more involved argument, we expect to obtain bounds close to those given by the present paper without such a restriction. The arguments also give new linear upper bounds (with constant terms) for the rank of $\pi_1(M)$ in terms of $\text{vol}\,M$, assuming that either $\pi_1(M)$ is $9$-free, or $M$ is closed and $\pi_1(M)$ is $5$-free.

Abstract:The rational homology balls $B_n$ appeared in Fintushel and Stern's rational blow-down construction [FS2]. Later, Symington [Sy1], defined this operation in the symplectic category. In [Kh2], the author defined the inverse procedure, the symplectic rational blow-up. In this paper, we study the obstructions to symplectically rationally blowing up a symplectic 4-manifold, i.e. the obstructions to symplectically embedding the rational homology balls $B_n$ into a symplectic 4-manifold. We prove a theorem and give additional examples which suggest that in order to symplectically embed the rational homology balls $B_n$, for high n, a symplectic 4-manifold must at least have a high enough $c_1^2$ as well.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove an optimal systolic inequality and the corresponding rigidity in the equality case on closed manifolds with positive bi-Ricci curvature, which generalizes the work of Bray-Brendle-Neves. The proof is given in all dimensions based on the method of minimal surfaces under the Generic Regularity Hypothesis, which is known to be true up to dimension ten.

Abstract:The $k$-systole of a Riemannian manifold is the infimum of the volume over all homologically non-trivial $k$-cycles. In this paper we discuss the behavior of the dimension two and co-dimension two systole of the complex projective space for distinguished classes of metrics, namely the homogeneous metrics and the Balanced metrics. In particular, we argue that every homogeneous metric maximizes the systole in its volume-normalized conformal class, as well as that each Kähler metric locally minimizes the systole on the set of volume-normalized Balanced metrics. The proof demands the implementation of integral geometric techniques, and a careful analysis of the second variation of the systole functional. As an application, we characterize the systolic behavior of almost-Hermitian 1-parameter Zoll-like deformations of the Fubini-Study metric.

Abstract:In this article, for any $n\geq 4$ we construct a sequence of compact hyperbolic $n$-manifolds $\{M_i\}$ with number of systoles at least as $\mathrm{vol}(M_i)^{1+\frac{1}{3n(n+1)}-\epsilon}$ for any $\epsilon>0$. In dimension 3, the bound is improved to $\mathrm{vol}(M_i)^{\frac{4}{3}-\epsilon}$. These results generalize previous work of Schmutz for $n=2$, and Dória-Murillo for $n=3$ to higher dimensions.

Abstract:The existence of nontrivial cup products or Massey products in the cohomology of a manifold leads to inequalities of systolic type, but in general such inequalities are not optimal (tight). Gromov proved an {optimal} systolic inequality for complex projective space. We provide a natural extension of Gromov's inequality to manifolds whose fundamental cohomology class is a cup product of 2-dimensional classes.

Abstract:Abstract We use Hodge theoretic methods to study homotopy types of complex projective manifolds with arbitrary fundamental groups. The main tool we use is the schematization functor $X \mapsto (X\otimes \mathbb {C})^{\mathrm {sch}}$ , introduced by the third author as a substitute for the rationalization functor in homotopy theory in the case of non-simply connected spaces. Our main result is the construction of a Hodge decomposition on $(X\otimes \mathbb {C})^{\mathrm {sch}}$ . This Hodge decomposition is encoded in an action of the discrete group $\mathbb {C}^{\times \delta }$ on the object $(X\otimes \mathbb {C})^{\mathrm {sch}}$ and is shown to recover the usual Hodge decomposition on cohomology, the Hodge filtration on the pro-algebraic fundamental group, and, in the simply connected case, the Hodge decomposition on the complexified homotopy groups. We show that our Hodge decomposition satisfies a purity property with respect to a weight filtration, generalizing the fact that the higher homotopy groups of a simply connected projective manifold have natural mixed Hodge structures. As applications we construct new examples of homotopy types which are not realizable as complex projective manifolds and we prove a formality theorem for the schematization of a complex projective manifold.

On the Betti Numbers of Finite Volume Hyperbolic Manifolds

Abstract:We obtain strong upper bounds for the Betti numbers of compact complex-hyperbolic manifolds. We use the unitary holonomy to improve the results given by the most direct application of the techniques of [DS17]. We also provide effective upper bounds for Betti numbers of compact quaternionic- and Cayley-hyperbolic manifolds in most degrees. More importantly, we extend our techniques to complete finite volume real- and complex-hyperbolic manifolds. In this setting, we develop new monotonicity inequalities for strongly harmonic forms on hyperbolic cusps and employ a new peaking argument to estimate $L^2$-cohomology ranks. Finally, we provide bounds on the de Rham cohomology of such spaces, using a combination of our bounds on $L^2$-cohomology, bounds on the number of cusps in terms of the volume, and the topological interpretation of reduced $L^2$-cohomology on certain rank one locally symmetric spaces.

Hyperbolic 3-manifolds with uniform spectral gap for coclosed 1-forms

Abstract:We study two quantifications of being a homology sphere for hyperbolic 3-manifolds, one geometric and one topological: the spectral gap for the Laplacian on coclosed 1-forms and the size of the first torsion homology group. We first construct a sequence of closed hyperbolic integer homology spheres with volume tending to infinity and a uniform coclosed 1-form spectral gap. This answers a question asked by Lin--Lipnowski. We also find sequences of hyperbolic rational homology spheres with the same properties that geometrically converge to a tame limit manifold. Moreover, we show that any such sequence must have unbounded torsion homology growth. Finally we show that a sequence of closed hyperbolic rational homology 3-spheres with uniformly bounded rank and a uniform coclosed 1-form spectral gap must have torsion homology that grows exponentially in volume.

Abstract:Let $n$ be an integer with $3 \leq n \leq 7$, and let $g$ be a Riemannian metric on $B^2 \times T^{n-2}$ with scalar curvature at least $-n(n-1)$. We establish an inequality relating the systole of the boundary to the infimum of the mean curvature on the boundary. As a consequence, we obtain a new positive energy theorem where equality holds for the Horowitz-Myers metrics.

Homotopy theoretic properties of open books

Abstract:We study the homotopy groups of open books in terms of those of their pages and bindings. Under homotopy theoretic conditions on the monodromy we prove an integral decomposition result for the based loop space on an open book, and under more relaxed conditions prove a rational loop space decomposition. The latter case allows for a rational dichotomy theorem for open books, as an extension of the classical dichotomy in rational homotopy theory. As a direct application, we show that for Milnor's open book decomposition of an odd sphere with monodromy of finite order the induced action of the monodromy on the homology groups of its page cannot be nilpotent.
