Abstract:This paper proposes a general characterization of one dimensional multiple periodic (MP) structures for electromagnetic transmission and radiation. Studies are conducted from three aspects: Firstly, the dispersion relations of non-dispersive (conventional) and dispersive (composite right/left-handed (CRLH)) materials are analyzed. Regarding each category of materials, detailed analyses for distributed layered media and lumped circuits are presented. Through studies, we found that the periodicity increase opens up multiple stopbands. According to our physical explanations and numerical results, the relation between stopbands and periodicity is clarified. Additionally, the periodicity increase also reduces the separation distance of space harmonic modes along the phase constant axis in the dispersion diagram. Thus, more space harmonic modes are excited in the radiation. This phenomenon results in simultaneous right- and left-handed radiation and multiple radiation beams. Secondly, mathematical formulas for the general dispersion relation and the general Bragg condition of the MP structures are derived. The formulas help to indicate the locations of stopbands and engineer the dispersion relation. Thirdly, applications of the MP structures to phase reversal (PR) antennas are presented. Both transmission and radiation characteristics of the MP structures are validated by the PR antennas experimentally. Single, double and triple periodic structures are comparatively studied.

Abstract:We consider the spectral Dirichlet problem for the Laplace operator in the plane Ω∘ with double-periodic perforation but also in the domain Ω• with a semi-infinite foreign inclusion so that the Floquet–Bloch technique and the Gelfand transform do not apply directly. We describe waves which are localized near the inclusion and propagate along it. We give a formulation of the problem with radiation conditions that provides a Fredholm operator of index zero. The main conclusion concerns the spectra σ∘ and σ• of the problems in Ω∘ and Ω•, namely we present a concrete geometry which supports the relation σ∘⫋σ• due to a new non-empty spectral band caused by the semi-infinite inclusion called an open waveguide in the double-periodic medium.

Abstract:We use methods from algebra and discrete geometry to study the irreducibility of the dispersion polynomial of a Schrödinger operator associated to a periodic graph after changing the period lattice. We provide numerous applications of these results to Schrödinger operators associated to families of graphs which include dense periodic graphs, and families containing the dice, honeycomb, and diamond lattices.

Band spectrum singularities for Schrödinger operators

Abstract:In this paper, we develop a systematic framework to study the dispersion surfaces of Schrödinger operators $ -\Delta + V$, where the potential $V \in C^\infty(\mathbb{R}^n,\mathbb{R})$ is periodic with respect to a lattice $\Lambda \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ and respects the symmetries of $\Lambda$. Our analysis relies on an abstract result, that expands on a seminal work of Fefferman--Weinstein \cite{feffer12}: if an operator depends analytically on a parameter, then so do its eigenvalues and eigenprojectors away from a discrete set. As an application, we describe the generic structure of some singularities in the band spectrum of Schrödinger operators invariant under the three-dimensional simple, body-centered and face-centered cubic lattices.

Perturbation theory for dispersion relations of spacetime-periodic materials

Abstract:We consider Bloch states of weak spacetime-periodic perturbations of homogeneous materials in one spatial dimension. The interplay of space- and time-periodicity leads to an infinitely degenerate dispersion relation in the free case. We consider a general perturbation term, and, as a consequence of the infinite degeneracy, we show that the effective equations are given by the eigenvalue problem of an infinite matrix. Our method can be viewed as a time-modulated generalisation of the nearly-free electron model. Based on this result, we find that the infinite degeneracy may split into a family of non-degenerate bands. Our results are illustrated with numerical calculations, and we observe close agreement between the perturbation theory and the numerically computed full solution.

Abstract:High-order modes of spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) on the periodically corrugated metal surfaces are investigated theoretically with the modal expansion method. An analytical expression for the condition of existence of high-order modes is presented. The properties of high-order modes such as dispersion and field pattern are analyzed detailedly, from which it seems that the propagation of spoof SPPs along the corrugated metal surface is mainly based on the coupling between the open groove cavities.

Abstract:We study the essential spectra of formally self-adjoint elliptic systems on doubly periodic planar domains perturbed by a semi-infinite periodic row of foreign inclusions. We show that the essential spectrum of the problem consists of the essential spectrum of the purely periodic problem and another component, which is the union of the discrete spectra of model problems in the infinite perturbation strip; these model problems arise by an application of the partial Floquet–Bloch–Gelfand transform.

Abstract:We study the compact localized scattering resonances of periodic and aperiodic chains of dipolar nanoparticles by combining the powerful Equitable Partition Theorem (EPT) of graph theory with the spectral dyadic Green's matrix formalism for the engineering of embedded quasi-modes in non-Hermitian open scattering systems in three spatial dimensions. We provide analytical and numerical design of the spectral properties of compact localized states in electromagnetically coupled chains and establish a connection with the distinctive behavior of Bound States in the Continuum. Our results extend the concept of compact localization to the scattering resonances of open systems with arbitrary aperiodic order beyond tight-binding models, and are relevant for the efficient design of novel photonic and plasmonic metamaterial architectures for enhanced light-matter interaction.

The effect of singularities and damping on the spectra of photonic crystals

Abstract:Understanding the dispersive properties of photonic crystals is a fundamental and well-studied problem. However, the introduction of singular permittivities and damping complicates the otherwise straightforward theory. In this paper, we study photonic crystals with a Drude-Lorentz model for the permittivity, motivated by halide perovskites. We demonstrate how the introduction of singularities and damping affects the spectral band structure and show how to interpret the notion of a "band gap" in this setting. We present explicit solutions for a one-dimensional model and show how integral operators can be used to handle multi-dimensional systems.

Abstract:We show that, for one-dimensional discrete Schrödinger operators, stability of Anderson localization under a class of rank one perturbations implies absence of intervals in spectra. The argument is based on well-known result of Gordon and del Rio--Makarov--Simon, combined with a way to consider perturbations whose ranges are not necessarily cyclic. The main application of the results is showing that a class of quasiperiodic operators with sawtooth-like potentials, for which such a version of stable localization is known, has Cantor spectra. We also obtain several results on gap filling under rank one perturbations for some general (not necessarily monotone) classes of quasiperiodic operators with discontinuous potentials.

Abstract:We study the Poisson equation in a perforated domain with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. The size of the perforations is denoted by $\epsilon$ > 0, and is proportional to the distance between neighbouring perforations. In the periodic case, the homogenized problem (obtained in the limit $\epsilon$ $\rightarrow$ 0) is well understood (see [21]). We extend these results to a non-periodic case which is defined as a localized deformation of the periodic setting. We propose geometric assumptions that make precise this setting, and we prove results which extend those of the periodic case: existence of a corrector, convergence to the homogenized problem, and two-scale expansion.

Abstract:We consider a family $\{\Omega^\varepsilon\}_{\varepsilon>0}$ of periodic domains in $\mathbb{R}^2$ with waveguide geometry and analyse spectral properties of the Neumann Laplacian $-\Delta_{\Omega^\varepsilon}$ on $\Omega^\varepsilon$. The waveguide $\Omega^\varepsilon$ is a union of a thin straight strip of the width $\varepsilon$ and a family of small protuberances with the so-called "room-and-passage" geometry. The protuberances are attached periodically, with a period $\varepsilon$, along the strip upper boundary. For $\varepsilon\to 0$ we prove a (kind of) resolvent convergence of $-\Delta_{\Omega^\varepsilon}$ to a certain ordinary differential operator. Also we demonstrate Hausdorff convergence of the spectrum. In particular, we conclude that if the sizes of "passages" are appropriately scaled the first spectral gap of $-\Delta_{\Omega^\varepsilon}$ is determined exclusively by geometric properties of the protuberances. The proofs are carried out using methods of homogenization theory.

Abstract:We survey results concerning the spectral properties of limit-periodic operators. The main focus is on discrete one-dimensional Schrödinger operators, but other classes of operators, such as Jacobi and CMV matrices, continuum Schrödinger operators and multi-dimensional Schrödinger operators, are discussed as well. We explain that each basic spectral type occurs, and it does so for a dense set of limit-periodic potentials. The spectrum has a strong tendency to be a Cantor set, but there are also cases where the spectrum has no gaps at all. The possible regularity properties of the integrated density of states range from extremely irregular to extremely regular. Additionally, we present background about periodic Schrödinger operators and almost-periodic sequences. In many cases we outline the proofs of the results we present.

Abstract:I construct perforated, "take-away" fractals that support short-distance power-law scaling with complex exponents for Dirac (spin-1/2) propagators. The construction relies on a fortuitous ansatz for Dirac boundary conditions at the surfaces of spherical voids in a three-dimensional embedding space, and requires that boundary conditions vary from void to void and are distributed statistically. The appropriate distribution can ensure that nonzero charges (but not dipoles, which drive nontrivial power-law scaling) induced in voids cancel out in spatial averaging.

Abstract:We study quasi-periodic eigenvalue problems that arise in the stability analysis of periodic traveling wave solutions to Hamiltonian PDEs. We establish bounds on regions in the complex plane when the eigenvalues may deviate from the imaginary axis, and estimates for the number of such off-axis eigenvalues. These relations hold when the dispersion relation grows sufficiently rapidly in the wavenumber. The proofs involve a Gershgorin disk argument together with the Hamiltonian symmetry of the spectrum. The results are applicable to a broad class of nonlinear dispersive equations including the generalized Korteweg--de Vries, Benjamin--Bona--Mahoney, and Kawanhara equations.

Abstract:This paper explores a non-linear, non-local model describing the evolution of a single species. We investigate scenarios where the spatial domain is either an arbitrary bounded and open subset of the $n$-dimensional Euclidean space or a periodic environment modeled by $n$-dimensional torus. The analysis includes the study of spectrum of the linear, bounded operator in the considered equation, which is a scaled, non-local analogue of classical Laplacian with Neumann boundaries. In particular we show the explicit formulas for eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. Moreover we show the asymptotic behaviour of eigenvalues. Within the context of the non-linear evolution problem, we establish the existence of an invariant region, give a criterion for convergence to the mean mass, and construct spatially heterogeneous steady states.

Abstract:We consider Schrödinger operators on periodic discrete graphs. It is known that the spectrum of these operators has band structure. We obtain a localization of spectral bands in terms of eigenvalues of Dirichlet and Neumann operators on a finite graph, which is constructed from the fundamental cell of the periodic graph. The proof is based on the Floquet decomposition of Schrödinger operators and the minimax principle.

Abstract:Multiple magnetic plasmon polariton (MPP) modes were recently explored in a well-known system—metal∕insulator∕metal layered structure perforated with periodic holes array [Appl. Phys. Lett. 90, 251112 (2007)]. Now, we consequently study the dispersions of the MPP modes in similar systems with rectangular hole arrays by analyzing the detailed optical transmittances at oblique incidences. Significantly, our results provide a definite polarization-dependent dispersion property of MPP modes: strong dispersive MPP(±1,±1) modes with the degeneration broken up and a remained degenerate MPP(0,±1) mode for s-polarization and almost flat dispersions of all MPP modes for p-polarization. Such a phenomenon is explained by the different coupling intensities among the artificial “magnetic atoms.” This finding helps us to make a deeper understanding on the artificial magnetic excitations in this trilayer metamaterial.
