Abstract:A three-level system with pumped electric-dipole allowed transition for incoherent-gain negative permittivity is suggested in order to realize dispersion-sensitive surface plasmon wave. The present surface wave modes occurring at an interface between an incoherent-gain negative-permittivity “plasmonic” medium (e.g., a semiconductor-quantum-dot material) and an ordinary dielectric can be amplified due to population transfer in the three-level system of the negative-permittivity medium. The issues of complex phase constant and the attenuation coefficients in the adjacent media are considered for addressing the problem of loss compensation of surface plasmon wave. The effect of incoherent-gain amplification exhibited by the dispersion-sensitive surface plasmon wave can be utilized for designing new quantum optical and photonic devices, e.g., photonic transistors and logic gates.

Abstract:This paper proposes a general characterization of one dimensional multiple periodic (MP) structures for electromagnetic transmission and radiation. Studies are conducted from three aspects: Firstly, the dispersion relations of non-dispersive (conventional) and dispersive (composite right/left-handed (CRLH)) materials are analyzed. Regarding each category of materials, detailed analyses for distributed layered media and lumped circuits are presented. Through studies, we found that the periodicity increase opens up multiple stopbands. According to our physical explanations and numerical results, the relation between stopbands and periodicity is clarified. Additionally, the periodicity increase also reduces the separation distance of space harmonic modes along the phase constant axis in the dispersion diagram. Thus, more space harmonic modes are excited in the radiation. This phenomenon results in simultaneous right- and left-handed radiation and multiple radiation beams. Secondly, mathematical formulas for the general dispersion relation and the general Bragg condition of the MP structures are derived. The formulas help to indicate the locations of stopbands and engineer the dispersion relation. Thirdly, applications of the MP structures to phase reversal (PR) antennas are presented. Both transmission and radiation characteristics of the MP structures are validated by the PR antennas experimentally. Single, double and triple periodic structures are comparatively studied.

Abstract:Materials with hyperbolic dispersion have recently garnered much attention in the optical and quantum communities due to their potential for controlling large- $k$ waves over a broad wavelength range. Their rarity has motivated many fundamental studies at microwave frequencies to improve their applications with full utilization of large- $k$ waves. Here, we report that hyperbolic dispersion can be mimicked by exploiting the structural dispersion of electromagnetic modes in waveguides filled with anisotropic dielectric materials. As demonstrated, the material parameters in the waveguide are subtly designed, and effective hyperbolic dispersion is achieved, which can reduce the dielectric loss and nonlocal effects related to the finite thickness of the discrete constituent elements of metamaterials at microwave frequencies. Numerical simulations are performed, including negative and anomalous refractions, negative reflection, and directional hyperbolic polaritons to validate the analytical results. The present method paves the way for the development of hyperbolic metamaterials at microwave frequencies.

Abstract:Due to the gradient of the phase shift as the wavelength in the reflection and transmission, the optical thin films coatings will present the spatial dispersion effect. The new kinds of super-prism thin film devices can be realized by well design interference effect inside of multilayer films to get the super-dispersion. The positive and negative spatial dispersion are existed in side of coatings, and is very sensitive to the angle of incident and wavelength. The analysis methods and the different kinds of spatial dispersion thin film filter devices and tunable spatial dispersion filter devices are presented in the paper.

Abstract:In materials with negative refraction, the direction of wave propagation is opposite to the direction of the wave vector. Using an approach that characterizes the optical response of a medium totally by a generalized dielectric permittivity, ε˜(ω,k⇒), we discuss the possibility of seeing negative refraction for optical waves in a number of nonmagnetic media. These include bulk waves in organic materials and in gyrotropic materials where additional exciton–polariton waves can have a negative group velocity. It is known that dispersion of surface waves can be engineered by tailoring a surface transition layer. We show how this effect can be used to obtain surface waves with negative refraction.

Abstract:We report that negative refraction can be achieved through surface waves on a metal surface with an array of drilled holes. Using a rigorous full-vectorial three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain method, we also demonstrate the sub-wavelength imaging of a point dipole source by a slab of such a structure.

Abstract:Refraction at a smooth interface is accompanied by momentum transfer normal to the interface. We show that corrugating an initially smooth, totally reflecting, non-metallic interface provides a momentum kick parallel to the surface, which can be used to refract light negatively or positively. This new mechanism of negative refraction is demonstrated by visible light and microwave experiments on grisms (grating-prisms). Single-beam all-angle-negative-refraction is achieved by incorporating a surface grating on a flat multilayered material. This negative refraction mechanism is used to create a new optical device, a grating lens. A plano-concave grating lens is demonstrated to focus plane microwaves to a point image. These results show that customized surface engineering can be used to achieve negative refraction even though the bulk material has positive refractive index. The surface periodicity provides a tunable parameter to control beam propagation leading to novel optical and microwave devices.

Abstract:Free controls of optic/acoustic waves for bending, focusing or steering the energy of wavefronts are highly desirable in many practical scenarios. However, the dispersive nature of the existing metamaterials/metasurfaces for wavefront manipulation necessarily results in limited bandwidth. Here, we propose the concept of dispersionless wavefront manipulation and report a theoretical, numerical and experimental work on the design of a reflective surface capable of controlling the acoustic wavefront arbitrarily without bandwidth limitation. Analytical analysis predicts the possibility to completely eliminate the frequency dependence with a specific gradient surface which can be implemented by designing a subwavelength corrugated surface. Experimental and numerical results, well consistent with the theoretical predictions, have validated the proposed scheme by demonstrating a distinct phenomenon of extraordinary acoustic reflection within an ultra-broad band. For acquiring a deeper insight into the underlying physics, a simple physical model is developed which helps to interpret this extraordinary phenomenon and predict the upper cutoff frequency precisely. Generations of planar focusing and non-diffractive beam have also been exemplified. With the dispersionless wave-steering capability and deep discrete resolution, our designed structure may open new avenue to fully steer classical waves and offer design possibilities for broadband optical/acoustical devices.

Abstract:Metasurfaces, ultrathin two-dimensional arrays of artificially engineered meta-atoms, can impart spatially varying changes towards the incident electromagnetic wave and provide versatile functionalities once unprecedented in sub-wavelength thick natural materials. The wavefront manipulation by metasurfaces usually arises from the strong resonant behaviors of varied meta-atoms in subwavelength lattice, which also brings some drawbacks like the unexpected dispersion due to separate resonances of the meta-atoms and the long concerned low efficiency problem. This paper reviews the recent surge of fruitful works on dispersion and efficiency engineering of metasurfaces and provides an overview of several effective methods to acquire metasurfaces with these distinctive features.
Two abnormal physical effects in negative index photonic crystals

Abstract:The photonic crystals possess complex dispersion relation and the unusual dispersion leads to negative refraction. Based on negative refraction, three main physical phenomena, negative Goos-Hanchen displacement, inverse Doppler effect and abnormal Cherenkov radiation have been proposed. In this work, two abnormal physical phenomena are discussed. Firstly, the negative Goos-Hanchen shift displacement is simulated by using common FDTD method. The negative displacement is measured experimentally at the wavelength of 10.6 mu m. Secondly, a novel phenomenon, the dual Doppler effect, in the simultaneous occurrence of both normal and inverse Doppler effect in one moving two-dimensional wedge-type photonic crystal with negative index is investigated by using spatial Fourier Transformation. This phenomenon is also simulated by an improved FDTD method. The results have potential applications in precision measurement, cloaking, sensor, radar deception and so on.

Abstract:The field of plasmonics has substantially affected the study of light-matter interactions at the subwavelength scale. However, dissipation losses still remain an inevitable obstacle in the development of plasmonic-based wave propagation. Although different materials with moderate losses are being extensively studied, absorption arguably continues to be the key challenge in the field. Here, we theoretically and numerically investigate a different route toward the reduction of loss in propagating plasmon waves. Rather than focusing on a material-based approach, we take advantage of structural dispersion in waveguides to manipulate effective material parameters, thus leading to smaller losses. The potential of this approach is illustrated with two examples: plane-wave propagation within a bulk epsilon-near-zero medium and surface plasmon polariton propagation at the interface of a medium with negative permittivity. We provide the recipe for a practical implementation at mid-infrared frequencies. Our results might represent an important step toward the development of low-loss plasmonic technologies.

Abstract:Artificial metamaterials made to date are all periodic in structure. Here we show that by randomizing contour patterns deposited lithographically on circuit board materials, a metamaterial characterized by a constitutive relation with negative constitutive parameters is produced in solid-state form. We clearly demonstrate the phenomenon of negative refraction to show that it is not produced by periodicity. This underlines the importance of using constitutive relations for media characterization in electromagnetic theory and suggests that metamaterials could be realized with composite materials or fabricated with various techniques by using versatile hosting materials.

Abstract:Abstract Dispersion results from the variation of index of refraction as well as electric field confinement in sub-wavelength structures. It usually results in efficiency decrease in metasurface components leading to troublesome scattering into unwanted directions. In this letter, by dispersion engineering, we report a set of eight nanostructures whose dispersion properties are nearly identical to each other while being capable of providing 0 to 2π full-phase coverage. Our nanostructure set enables broadband and polarization-insensitive metasurface components reaching 90% relative diffraction efficiency (normalized to the power of transmitted light) from 450 nm to 700 nm in wavelength. Relative diffraction efficiency is important at a system level – in addition to diffraction efficiency (normalized to the power of incident light) – as it considers only the transmitted optical power that can affect the signal to noise ratio. We first illustrate our design principle by a chromatic dispersion-engineered metasurface grating, then show that other metasurface components such as chromatic metalenses can also be implemented by the same set of nanostructures with significantly improved relative diffraction efficiency.

Abstract:>Propagation characteristics of surface plasmon polaritons(SPPs)in the lamellar heterostructure,which is actually a SPP waveguide array,constructed by two kinds of single negative(SNG)material layers stacked alternatively are investigated.Based on the finite element method(FEM),the negative-refraction(NR) property is demonstrated when the electromagnetic wave penetrates through free space into such SNG lamellar structure.A clear view of the underlying physics of NR is presented qualitatively that is mainly related to the coupled SPPs.The strong coupling effect leads to the novel SPP dispersion curves and then the anomalous propagation characteristics.

Abstract:Negative refraction, an unnatural optical phenomenon in which the incident and the refracted waves reside on the same side of the surface normal, has been demonstrated with the invention of negative index media based on artificially engineered photonic structures called metamaterials. It has received wide attention due to its potential applications in imaging, nonlinear optics, and electromagnetic cloaking. However, it is highly challenging to realize negative refraction operating at all angles and with the perfect transmission. In this work, leveraging the recent development in topological photonics, we propose to realize reflectionless negative refraction for all incident angles with a topological metamaterial. The proposed metamaterial possesses two Weyl points of opposite topological charges. By interfacing the metamaterial with a perfect electric conductor (PEC) or a perfect magnetic conductor (PMC), the Fermi arc connecting the two Weyl points can take the form of a half-circle possessing a positive or a negative refractive index. Importantly, due to the topological protection, there is no reflection at the interface between the PEC and PMC covered areas, leading to the observation of all-angle negative refraction without reflection at the boundary. Our work provides a new platform for manipulating the propagation of surface waves, which may find applications in the construction of integrated photonic devices.
Negative Refraction of Mixing Waves in Nonlinear Elastic Wave Metamaterials

Abstract:Nonlinear effects can enrich the propagation of elastic waves in mechanical metamaterials, which makes it possible to extend classical phenomena and functions in linear systems to nonlinear ones. In this work, rather than monochromatic waves in similar linear structures, the negative refraction is realized by mixing waves which are generated in nonlinear elastic wave metamaterials. Based on the stiffness matrix and plane wave expansion methods, dispersion curves of in–plane modes resulting from the collinear and non–linear mixings of two longitudinal waves are calculated. In the frequency spectrum, two propagating modes coalesce at exceptional points due to the coupling of in–plane modes, and those points at which the refraction type changes are also exceptional ones. Two kinds of negative refraction can be found in the mixing modes near exceptional points, but each of them needs to be induced in a specific configuration. Moreover, experiments are performed to support the pure negative refraction and beam splitting of the nonlinear elastic waves. Particularly, the parallel configuration is able to separate and extract the nonlinear mode when the single–mode negative refraction occurs, which shows the possibility to design elastic wave device by the negative refraction of nonlinear mixing waves.

Dispersion Control in Plasmonic Open Nanocavities

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the dependence of plasmonic resonant properties on cavity height in open circular cylinder nanocavities as a result of a strong three-dimensional confinement of the electromagnetic field, which shows a new way to tailor the dispersion of surface plasmon polaritons in cavities. The azimuthal and the axial symmetric plasmonic mode patterns are directly observed at resonant wavelengths using cathodoluminescence spectroscopy. Plasmonic modes and optical vertical cavity modes can be simultaneously excited and can coexist in a nanocavity with sufficient height. The highest quality factor, which is up to 73, is obtained in a 500 nm high cavity. The smallest mode volume is only 0.031 λ(SPP)(3), and the corresponding Purcell factor is 71. Open nanocavities provide space for the interaction between an optical emitter and a confined electromagnetic field. Many applications can be expected, such as plasmonic light-emitting devices and nanolasers.

Abstract:Ultrathin metasurfaces consisting of a monolayer of subwavelength plasmonic resonators are capable of generating local abrupt phase changes and can be used for controlling the wavefront of electromagnetic waves. The phase change occurs for transmitted or reflected wave components whose polarization is orthogonal to that of a linearly polarized (LP) incident wave. As the phase shift relies on the resonant features of the plasmonic structures, it is in general wavelength-dependent. Here, we investigate the interaction of circularly polarized (CP) light at an interface composed of a dipole antenna array to create spatially varying abrupt phase discontinuities. The phase discontinuity is dispersionless, that is, it solely depends on the orientation of dipole antennas, but not their spectral response and the wavelength of incident light. By arranging the antennas in an array with a constant phase gradient along the interface, the phenomenon of broadband anomalous refraction is observed ranging from visible to near-infrared wavelengths. We further design and experimentally demonstrate an ultrathin phase gradient interface to generate a broadband optical vortex beam based on the above principle.
