Abstract:We give two new simple characterizations of the Cauchy distribution by using the Möbius and Mellin transforms. They also yield characterizations of the circular Cauchy distribution and the mixture Cauchy model.

Abstract:In this paper we provide a unified approach to a family of integrals of Mellin--Barnes type using distribution theory and Fourier transforms. Interesting features arise in many of the cases which call for the application of pull-backs of distributions via smooth submersive maps defined by Hörmander. We derive by this method the integrals of Hecke and Sonine relating to various types of Bessel functions which have found applications in analytic and algebraic number theory.

Abstract:We prove Abelian and Tauberian theorems for regularized Cauchy transforms of positive Borel measures on the real line whose distribution functions grow at most polynomially at infinity. In particular, we relate the asymptotics of the distribution functions to the asymptotics of the regularized Cauchy transform.

Abstract:Inspired by Jaming's characterization of the Fourier transform on specific groups via the convolution property, we provide a novel approach which characterizes the Fourier transform on any locally compact abelian group. In particular, our characterization encompasses Jaming's results. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the cosine transform as well as the Laplace transform can also be characterized via a suitable convolution property.

Abstract:We give a new integral characterization of the Dirichlet process on a general phase space. To do so, we first prove a characterization of the nonsymmetric Beta distribution via size-biased sampling. Two applications are a new characterization of the Dirichlet distribution and a marked version of a classical characterization of the Poisson–Dirichlet distribution via invariance and independence properties.

Abstract:We introduce a class of integral theorems based on cyclic functions and Riemann sums approximating integrals. The Fourier integral theorem, derived as a combination of a transform and inverse transform, arises as a special case. The integral theorems provide natural estimators of density functions via Monte Carlo methods. Assessment of the quality of the density estimators can be used to obtain optimal cyclic functions, alternatives to the sin function, which minimize square integrals. Our proof techniques rely on a variational approach in ordinary differential equations and the Cauchy residue theorem in complex analysis.

Abstract:We present new proofs of eight integral representations of the Catalan numbers. Then, we create analogous integral representations of the Motzkin numbers and obtain new results. Most integral representations of counting sequences found in the literature are proved by using advanced mathematical techniques. All integral representations in this paper are proved by using standard techniques from integral calculus. Thus, we provide a more simplistic approach of proving integral representations of the Catalan and Motzkin numbers.

Abstract:We consider a uniqueness problem concerning the Fourier coefficients of normalized Cauchy transforms. These problems inherently involve proving a simultaneous approximation phenomenon and establishing the existence of cyclic inner functions in certain sequence spaces. Our results have several applications in different directions. First, we offer a new non-probabilistic proof of a classic theorem by Kahane and Katzenelson on simultaneous approximation. Secondly, we demonstrate the absence of uniform admissible majorants of Fourier coefficients in de Branges-Rovnyak spaces.

Cauchy transforms and Szegő projections in dual Hardy spaces: inequalities and Möbius invariance

Abstract:Dual pairs of interior and exterior Hardy spaces associated to a simple closed Lipschitz planar curve are considered, leading to a Möbius invariant function bounding the norm of the Cauchy transform $\bf{C}$ from below. This function is shown to satisfy strong rigidity properties and is closely connected via the Berezin transform to the square of the Kerzman-Stein operator. Explicit example calculations are presented. For ellipses, a new asymptotically sharp lower bound on the norm of $\bf{C}$ is produced.

Abstract:It is well known that the ratio of two independent standard Gaussian random variables follows a Cauchy distribution. Any convex combination of independent standard Cauchy random variables also follows a Cauchy distribution. In a recent joint work, the author proved a surprising multivariate generalization of the above facts. Fix $m > 1$ and let $\Sigma$ be a $m\times m$ positive semi-definite matrix. Let $X,Y \sim \mathrm{N}(0,\Sigma)$ be independent vectors. Let $\vec{w}=(w_1, \dots, w_m)$ be a vector of non-negative numbers with $\sum_{j=1}^m w_j = 1.$ The author proved recently that the random variable $$ Z = \sum_{j=1}^m w_j\frac{X_j}{Y_j}\; $$ also has the standard Cauchy distribution. In this note, we provide some more understanding of this result and give a number of natural generalizations. In particular, we observe that if $(X,Y)$ have the same marginal distribution, they need neither be independent nor be jointly normal for $Z$ to be Cauchy distributed. In fact, our calculations suggest that joint normality of $(X,Y)$ may be the only instance in which they can be independent. Our results also give a method to construct copulas of Cauchy distributions.

Abstract:In this paper we focus on continuous univariate probability distributions, like McKay distributions, $K$-distribution, generalized inverse Gaussian distribution and generalised McKay distributions, with support $[0,\infty),$ which are related to modified Bessel functions of the first and second kinds and in most cases we show that they belong to the class infinitely divisible distributions, self-decomposable distributions, generalized gamma convolutions and hyperbolically completely monotone densities. Some of the results are known, however the proofs are new and we use special functions technique. Integral representations of quotients of Tricomi hypergeometric functions as well as of quotients of Gaussian hypergeometric functions, or modified Bessel functions of the second kind play an important role in our study. In addition, by using a different approach we rediscover a Stieltjes transform representation due to Hermann Hankel for the product of modified Bessel functions of the first and second kinds and we also deduce a series of new Stieltjes transform representations for products, quotients and their reciprocals concerning modified Bessel functions of the first and second kinds. By using these results we obtain new infinitely divisible modified Bessel distributions with Laplace transforms related to modified Bessel functions of the first and second kind. Moreover, we show that the new Stieltjes transform representations have some interesting applications and we list some open problems which may be of interest for further research. In addition, we present a new proof via the Pick function characterization theorem for the infinite divisibility of the ratio of two gamma random variables and we present some new Stieltjes transform representations of quotients of Tricomi hypergeometric functions.

We prove characterization of free-Kummer and free Poisson distributions by freeness properties together with some assumptions about conditional moments. Our main tools are subordination of free multiplicative convolution and Boolean cumulants.

Abstract:We investigate fractional moments and expectations of power means of complex-valued random variables by using fractional calculus. We deal with both negative and positive orders of the fractional derivatives. The one-dimensional distributions are characterized in terms of the fractional moments without any moment assumptions. We explicitly compute the expectations of the power means for both the univariate Cauchy distribution and the Poincaré distribution on the upper-half plane. We show that for these distributions the expectations are invariant with respect to the sample size and the value of the power.

Abstract:Hyperbolic complete monotonicity property ($\mathrm{HCM}$) is a way to check if a distribution is a generalized gamma ($\mathrm{GGC}$), hence is infinitely divisible. In this work, we illustrate to which extent the Mittag-Leffler functions $E_\alpha, \;\alpha \in (0,2]$, enjoy the $\mathrm{HCM}$ property, and then intervene deeply in the probabilistic context. We prove that, for suitable $\alpha$ and complex numbers $z$, the real and imaginary part of the functions $x\mapsto E_\alpha \big(z x\big)$, are tightly linked to the stable distributions and to the generalized Cauchy kernel.

Abstract:Using a representation of the unimodular Lorentz group, we derive some relations between hyper Bessel–Clifford, Macdonald and Meijer functions. We obtained them as two additional theorems (continual and countable) for a functional defined on the above group and a pair of basis functions belonging to representation spaces. Introducing a hyper analogue of the known first and second Hankel–Clifford integral transforms and writing the continual addition theorem for a particular case, we obtain a simple formula for the sum of these transforms of Macdonald function.
