Abstract:We give a proof of the Erdős-Ko-Rado Theorem using the Borel Fixed Point Theorem from algebraic group theory. This perspective gives a strong analogy between the Erdős-Ko-Rado Theorem and (generalizations of) the Gerstenhaber Theorem on spaces of nilpotent matrices.

Abstract:Let G be a finite abelian group with |G| > 1. Let a (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) be k distinct elements of G and let b (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, b (k) be (not necessarily distinct) elements of G, where k is a positive integer smaller than the least prime divisor of |G|. We show that there is a permutation pi on {1, aEuro broken vertical bar,k} such that a (1) b (pi(1)), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) b (pi(k)) are distinct, provided that any other prime divisor of |G| (if there is any) is greater than k!. This in particular confirms the Dasgupta-Karolyi-Serra-Szegedy conjecture for abelian p-groups. We also pose a new conjecture involving determinants and characters, and show that its validity implies Snevily's conjecture for abelian groups of odd order. Our methods involve exterior algebras and characters.
Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem in Peisert-type graphs

Abstract:The celebrated Erdős-Ko-Rado (EKR) theorem for Paley graphs (of square order) states that all maximum cliques are canonical in the sense that each maximum clique arises from the subfield construction. Recently, Asgarli and Yip extended this result to Peisert graphs and other Cayley graphs which are Peisert-type graphs with nice algebraic properties on the connection set. On the other hand, there are Peisert-type graphs for which the EKR theorem fails to hold. In this paper, we show that the EKR theorem of Paley graphs extends to almost all pseudo-Paley graphs of Peisert-type. Furthermore, we establish the stability results of the same flavor.

Abstract:Celebrated results often unfold like episodes in a long-running series. In the field of extremal set thoery, Erdős, Ko, and Rado in 1961 established that any $k$-uniform intersecting family on $[n]$ has a maximum size of $\binom{n-1}{k-1}$, with the unique extremal structure being a star. In 1967, Hilton and Milner followed up with a pivotal result, showing that if such a family is not a star, its size is at most $\binom{n-1}{k-1} - \binom{n-k-1}{k-1} + 1$, and they identified the corresponding extremal structures. In recent years, Han and Kohayakawa, Kostochka and Mubayi, and Huang and Peng have provided the second and third levels of stability results in this line of research. In this paper, we provide a unified approach to proving the stability result for the Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem at any level. Our framework primarily relies on a robust linear algebra method, which leverages appropriate non-shadows to effectively handle the structural complexities of these intersecting families.

An algebraic approach to Erdős-Ko-Rado sets of flags in spherical buildings II

Abstract:We continue our investigation of Erdős-Ko-Rado (EKR) sets of flags in spherical buildings. In previous work, we used the theory of buildings and Iwahori-Hecke algebras to obtain upper bounds on their size. As the next step towards the classification of the maximal EKR-sets, we describe the eigenspaces for the smallest eigenvalue of the opposition graphs. We determine their multiplicity and provide a combinatorial description of spanning sets of these subspaces, from which a complete description of the maximal Erdős-Ko-Rado sets of flags may potentially be found. This was recently shown to be possible for type $A_n$, $n$ odd, by Heering, Lansdown, and the last author by making use of the current work.

Abstract:We amalgamate two generalizations of Ramsey's Theorem--Ramsey classes and the Erd\H{o}s-Rado Theorem--into the notion of a combinatorial Erd\H{o}s-Rado class. These classes are closely related to Erd\H{o}s-Rado classes, which are those from which we can build generalized indiscernibles and blueprints in nonelementary classes, especially Abstract Elementary Classes. We give several examples and some applications.

Abstract:Let G be a real reductive group with an involution σ on it. Let H be an open subgroup of Gσ with a character χ on it. Associated to a “theta stable”, “σ-split” parabolic subalgebra, and using the Zuckerman functor, we construct representations of G together with χ-equivariant linear functionals on them. We apply this construction to prove a non-vanishing hypothesis of H. Grobner and A. Raghuram in the study of algebraicity of critical L-values.
Borel sets of Rado graphs and Ramsey's Theorem

Abstract:The well-known Galvin-Prikry Theorem states that Borel subsets of the Baire space are Ramsey: Given any Borel subset $\mathcal{X}\subseteq [\omega]^{\omega}$, where $[\omega]^{\omega}$ is endowed with the metric topology, each infinite subset $X\subseteq \omega$ contains an infinite subset $Y\subseteq X$ such that $[Y]^{\omega}$ is either contained in $\mathcal{X}$ or disjoint from $\mathcal{X}$. Kechris, Pestov, and Todorcevic point out in their seminal 2005 paper the dearth of similar results for homogeneous structures. Such results are a necessary step to the larger goal of finding a correspondence between structures with infinite dimensional Ramsey properties and topological dynamics, extending their correspondence between the Ramsey property and extreme amenability. In this article, we prove an analogue of the Galvin-Prikry theorem for the Rado graph. Any such infinite dimensional Ramsey theorem is subject to constraints following from the 2006 work of Laflamme, Sauer, and Vuksanovic. The proof uses techniques developed for the author's work on the Ramsey theory of the Henson graphs as well as some new methods for fusion sequences, used to bypass the lack of a certain amalgamation property enjoyed by the Baire space.

Abstract:Motivated by an Erdős–Ko–Rado-type problem on sets of strongly orthogonal roots in the root system, we estimate bounds for the size of a family of pairs of k -subsets in , such that and for all . This is reminiscent of a classic problem of Bollobás. We provide upper and lower bounds for this problem, relying on classical results of extremal combinatorics and an explicit construction using the incidence matrix of a symmetric design.

Categorical actions and derived equivalences for finite odd-dimensional orthogonal groups

Abstract:In this paper we prove that Broué's abelian defect group conjecture is true for the finite odd-dimensional orthogonal groups $\SO_{2n+1}(q)$ at linear primes with $q$ odd. We first make use of the reduction theorem of Bonnafé-Dat-Rouquier to reduce the problem to isolated blocks. Then we construct a categorical action of a Kac-Moody algebra on the category of quadratic unipotent representations of the various groups $\SO_{2n+1}(q)$ in non-defining characteristic, by generalizing the corresponding work of Dudas-Varagnolo-Vasserot for unipotent representations. This is one of the main ingredients of our work which may be of independent interest. To obtain derived equivalences of blocks and their Brauer correspondents, we define and investigate isolated RoCK blocks. Finally, we establish the desired derived equivalence based on the work of Chuang-Rouquier that categorical actions provide derived equivalences between certain weight spaces.

Abstract:Using profinite Galois descent, we compute the Brauer group of the $K(1)$-local category relative to Morava E-theory. At odd primes this group is generated by a cyclic algebra formed using any primitive $(p-1)$st root of unity, but at the prime two is a group of order $32$ with nontrivial extensions; we give explicit descriptions of the generators, and consider their images in the Brauer group of $KO$. Along the way, we compute the relative Brauer group of completed $KO$, using the étale locally trivial Brauer group of Antieau, Meier and Stojanoska.

Applications of the Fixed Point Theorem for group actions on buildings to algebraic groups over polynomial rings

Abstract:We apply the Fixed Point Theorem for the actions of finite groups on Bruhat-Tits buildings and their products to establish two results concerning the groups of points of reductive algebraic groups over polynomial rings in one variable, assuming that the base field is of characteristic zero. First, we prove that for a reductive $k$-group $G$, every finite subgroup of $G(k[t])$ is conjugate to a subgroup of $G(k)$. This, in particular, implies that if $k$ is a finite extension of the $p$-adic field $\mathbb{Q}_p$, then the group $G(k[t])$ has finitely many conjugacy classes of finite subgroups, which is a well-known property for arithmetic groups. Second, we give a give a short proof of the theorem of Raghunathan-Ramanathan about $G$-torsors over the affine line.

Abstract:The \emph{intersection density} of a finite transitive group $G\leq \operatorname{Sym}(\Omega)$ is the rational number $\rho(G)$ given by the ratio between the maximum size of a subset of $G$ in which any two permutations agree on some elements of $\Omega$ and the order of a point stabilizer of $G$. In 2022, Meagher asked whether $\rho(G)\in \{1,\frac{3}{2},3\}$ for any transitive group $G$ of degree $3p$, where $p\geq 5$ is an odd prime. For the primitive case, it was proved in [\emph{J. Combin. Ser. A}, 194:105707, 2023] that the intersection density is $1$. It is shown in this paper that the answer to this question is affirmative for non-quasiprimitive groups, unless possibly when $p = q+1$ is a Fermat prime and $\Omega$ admits a unique $G$-invariant partition $\mathcal{B}$ such that the induced action $\overline{G}_\mathcal{B}$ of $G$ on $\mathcal{B}$ is an almost simple group containing $\operatorname{PSL}_{2}(q)$.

Typical Ramsey properties of the primes, abelian groups and other discrete structures

Abstract:Given a matrix $A$ with integer entries, a subset $S$ of an abelian group and $r \in \mathbb N$, we say that $S$ is $(A,r)$-Rado if any $r$-colouring of $S$ yields a monochromatic solution to the system of equations $Ax=0$. A classical result of Rado characterises all those matrices $A$ such that $\mathbb N$ is $(A,r)$-Rado for all $r \in \mathbb N$. Rödl and Ruciński and Friedgut, Rödl and Schacht proved a random version of Rado's theorem where one considers a random subset of $[n]:=\{1,\dots,n\}$ instead of $\mathbb N$. In this paper, we investigate the analogous random Ramsey problem in the more general setting of abelian groups. Given a sequence $(S_n)_{n\in\mathbb N}$ of finite subsets of abelian groups, let $S_{n,p}$ be a random subset of $S_n$ obtained by including each element of $S_n$ independently with probability $p$. We are interested in determining the probability threshold $\hat p:=\hat p(n)$ such that $$\lim _{n \rightarrow \infty} \mathbb P [ S_{n,p} \text{ is } (A,r)\text{-Rado}]= \begin{cases} 0 &\text{ if } p=o(\hat p); \\ 1 &\text{ if } p=\omega(\hat p). \end{cases}$$ Our main result, which we coin the random Rado lemma, is a general black box to tackle problems of this type. Using this tool in conjunction with a series of supersaturation results, we determine the probability threshold for a number of different cases. A consequence of the Green-Tao theorem is the van der Waerden theorem for the primes: every finite colouring of the primes contains arbitrarily long monochromatic arithmetic progressions. Using our machinery, we obtain a random version of this result. We also prove a novel supersaturation result for $S_n:=[n]^d$ and use it to prove an integer lattice generalisation of the random version of Rado's theorem. Various threshold results for abelian groups are also given.

Abstract:In this paper, we remove certain hypothesis in the theorem of Bertolini-Darmon on the rationality of Stark-Heegner points over narrow genus class fields of real quadratic fields. Along the way, we establish that certain normalized special values of $L$-functions are squares of rational numbers, a result that is of independent interest, and can be regarded as instances of the rank zero case of the Birch and Swinnerton-dyer conjecture modulo squares.
A proof for Ando's theorem on norm-coherent coordinates via the Coleman norm operator

Abstract:Ando established an algebraic criterion for when a complex orientation for a Morava E-theory is an $H_\infty$-map. The criterion relates such an orientation to a specific property of the formal group associated to the E-theory, namely, a norm coherence condition on its coordinate. On the other hand, Coleman constructed a norm operator for interpolating division values in local fields, which depends on a Lubin--Tate formal group law. These formal group laws are important tools in explicit local class field theory. In this article, we give a conceptual proof for Ando's theorem using the Coleman norm operator via the bridge of formal group laws between topology and arithmetic.

Abstract:We use an algebraic method to prove a degree version of the celebrated Erd\H os-Ko-Rado theorem: given $n>2k$, every intersecting $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$ on $n$ vertices contains a vertex that lies on at most $\binom{n-2}{k-2}$ edges. This result can be viewed as a special case of the degree version of a well-known conjecture of Erdős on hypergraph matchings. Improving the work of Bollobás, Daykin, and Erd\H os from 1976, we show that given integers $n, k, s$ with $n\ge 3k^2 s$, every $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$ on $n$ vertices with minimum vertex degree greater than $\binom{n-1}{k-1}-\binom{n-s}{k-1}$ contains $s$ disjoint edges.

Arboreal Galois groups for quadratic rational functions with colliding critical points

Abstract:Let $K$ be a field, and let $f\in K(z)$ be rational function. The preimages of a point $x_0\in P^1(K)$ under iterates of $f$ have a natural tree structure. As a result, the Galois group of the resulting field extension of $K$ naturally embeds into the automorphism group of this tree. In unpublished work from 2013, Pink described a certain proper subgroup $M_{\ell}$ that this so-called arboreal Galois group $G_{\infty}$ must lie in if $f$ is quadratic and its two critical points collide at the $\ell$-th iteration. After presenting a new description of $M_{\ell}$ and a new proof of Pink's theorem, we state and prove necessary and sufficient conditions for $G_{\infty}$ to be the full group $M_{\ell}$.

On Bosch-Lütkebohmert-Raynaud's Conjecture I

Abstract:Let $G$ be a smooth algebraic group over the field of rational functions of an excellent Dedekind scheme $S$ of equal characteristic $p>0.$ A Néron lft-model of $G$ is a smooth separated model $\mathscr{G} \to S$ of $G$ satisfying a universal property. Predicting whether a given $G$ admits such a model is a very delicate (and, in general, open) question if $S$ has infinitely many closed points, which is the subject of Conjecture I due to Bosch-Lütkebohmert-Raynaud. This conjecture was recently proven by T. Suzuki and the author if the residue fields of $S$ at closed points are perfect, but refuted in general. The aim of the present paper is two-fold: firstly, we give a new construction of counterexamples which is more general and provides a conceptual explanation for the only counterexamples known previously, as well as providing many new counterexamples. Secondly, we shall give a new and elementary proof of Conjecture I in the case of perfect residue fields. Both parts make use of the concept of weakly permawound unipotent groups recently introduced by Rosengarten.
