Abstract:The puzzling mechanism of coherent radio emission remains unknown, but fortunately, repeating fast radio bursts (FRBs) provide a precious opportunity, with extremely bright subpulses created in a clear and vacuum-like pulsar magnetosphere. FRBs are millisecond-duration signals that are highly dispersed at distant galaxies but with uncertain physical origin(s). Coherent curvature radiation by bunches has already been proposed for repeating FRBs. The charged particles are created during central star's quakes, which can form bunches streaming out along curved magnetic field lines, so as to trigger FRBs. The nature of narrow-band radiation with time-frequency drifting can be a natural consequence that bunches could be observed at different times with different curvatures. Additionally, high linear-polarization can be seen if the line of sight is confined to the beam angle, whereas the emission could be highly circular-polarized if off-beam. It is also discussed that pulsar surface may be full of small hills (i.e., zits) which would help producing bulk of energetic bunches for repeating FRBs as well as for rotation-powered pulsars.

Abstract:Fast radio bursts(FRBs)are millisecond-duration flashes of Giga-Hertz radio emission.Since Lorimer and his collaborators[1]claimed their discovery in 2007,FRBs have remained one of the hottest fields in astronomy.In this research field,the physical origin,radiation mechanism and ambient environment are three of the key questions that have been unsolved[2,3].Since FRB 20121102A was discovered to occur repeatedly for the first time by the Arecibo radio telescope[4],repeating FRBs have become particularly interesting.In a recent paper[5],repeating FRB 20190520B discovered by the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spher-ical radio Telescope(FAST)was reported.Following this discovery,further observations of this source by some telescopes such as FAST[5],the Karl G.Jansky Very Large Array[5],the Robert C.Byrd Green Bank Telescope[6],and Parkes[7]showed that:(1)the host galaxy of this FRB is a dwarf galaxy,whose redshift is z=0.241 and dispersion measure(DM)including a possible contribution from the circum-burst environment(DMhost=900+72-111 pc/cm3)is about one order of magnitude larger than the average value of the host galaxies of other FRBs(DMhost～100 pc/cm3);(2)a persistent radio source associated with this FRB was discovered,which is the sec-ond persistent radio source(the first one is FRB 20121102A);and(3)the detected Faraday rotation measure(RM)evolved rapidly and changed its sign from 104 to-1.6×104 rad/m2 in about half a year.

A Large Scale Magneto-ionic Fluctuation in the Local Environment of Periodic Fast Radio Burst Source, FRB 20180916B

Abstract:Fast radio burst (FRB) source 20180916B exhibits a 16.33-day periodicity in its burst activity. It is as of yet unclear what proposed mechanism produces the activity, but polarization information is a key diagnostic. Here, we report on the polarization properties of 44 bursts from FRB 20180916B detected between 2018 December and 2021 December by CHIME/FRB, the FRB project on the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment. In contrast to previous observations, we find significant variations in the Faraday rotation measure (RM) of FRB 20180916B. Over the nine month period 2021 April$-$2021 December we observe an apparent secular increase in $\rm{RM}$ of $\sim 50 \; \rm{rad\, m^{-2}}$ (a fractional change of over $40\%$) that is accompanied by a possible drift of the emitting band to lower frequencies. This interval displays very little variation in the dispersion measure ($\Delta \rm{DM}\lesssim 0.8\; \rm{pc\, cm^{-3}}$) which indicates that the observed RM evolution is likely produced from coherent changes in the Faraday-active medium's magnetic field. Burst-to-burst RM variations appear unrelated to the activity cycle phase. The degree of linear polarization of our burst sample ($\gtrsim 80\%$) is consistent with the negligible depolarization expected for this source in the 400-800 MHz bandpass of CHIME. FRB 20180916B joins other repeating FRBs in displaying substantial RM variations between bursts. This is consistent with the notion that repeater progenitors may be associated with young stellar populations by their preferential occupation of dynamic magnetized environments commonly found in supernova remnants, pulsar wind nebulae or near high mass stellar companions.

Abstract:The first detection and deep follow-up of a Galactic fast radio burst (FRB) phenomenon were reported in three papers published in the journal Nature in November 2020. Interestingly, this FRB is accompanied by a X-ray burst. The observations from multiple space and ground-based telescopes were combined to accomplish this discovery and ascertain its association with a source in the Milky Way. As the name implies, a FRB is a transient bright pulse of radio waves with a burst duration measured in milliseconds. This phenomenon was first discovered in 2007. It is extremely difficult to detect and even more so to determine their position in the sky due to their brief existence. This is the first detection of a FRB with radiation other than radio waves, as well as the first of its kind in the Milky Way. For the first time, these observations have confirmed that the source(s) of FRBs can be a magnetar(s), which so far is the only verified celestial body capable of producing FRBs. It is worth noting that one of the papers was written by a Chinese research team, the co-first authors of which are Lin Lin from Beijing Normal University, Chunfeng Zhang from Peking University, and Pei Wang from the National Astronomical Observatories of China. The observations came from China's "Sky Eye"-the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST).

Abstract:Several sources of repeating coherent bursts of radio emission with periods of many minutes have now been reported in the literature. These 'ultralong period' (ULP) sources have no clear multiwavelength counterparts and challenge canonical pulsar emission models, leading to debate regarding their nature. In this work, we report the discovery of a bright, highly polarized burst of radio emission at low Galactic latitude as part of a wide-field survey for transient and variable radio sources. ASKAP J175534.9 | | 252749.1 does not appear to repeat, with only a single intense two-minute | | 200-mJy burst detected from 60 h of observations. The burst morphology and polarization properties are comparable to those of classical pulsars but the duration is more than one hundred times longer, analogous to ULPs. Combined with the existing ULP population, this suggests that these sources have a strong Galactic latitude dependence and hints at an unexplored population of transient and variable radio sources in the thin disc of the Milky Way. The resemblance of this burst with both ULPs and pulsars calls for a unified coherent emission model for objects with spin periods from milliseconds to tens of minutes. However, whether or not these are all neutron stars or have the same underlying power source remains open for debate.

Follow-up observations of apparently one-off sources from the Parkes telescope

Abstract:A small fraction of fast radio bursts (FRBs) have been observed with multiple bursts, whereas most Galactic sources emitting radio pulses are known to repeat. Here we present the results of follow-up observations of two FRBs and four rotating radio transients (RRATs). Among these, only one RRAT has been observed with repeating pulses, with an estimated period of around 1.297047 s. For comparison, we reanalysed the Parkes archival follow-up observations in CSIRO's data archive for all apparently one-off sources discovered by the Parkes telescopes, including 13 RRATs and 29 FRBs. In total, 3 RRATs are suggested to be repeaters, but no repeating signals were detected from the other sources. Reporting details of the non-detection observations for the apparently one-off sources would help investigate their origins, and catastrophic scenarios are worth proposing for both extragalactic and Galactic sources.

Abstract:Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are cosmic sources emitting millisecond-duration radio bursts. Although several hundreds FRBs have been discovered, their physical nature and central engine remain unclear. The variations of Faraday rotation measure and dispersion measure, due to local environment, are crucial clues to understanding their physical nature. The recent observations on the rotation measure of FRB 20201124A show a significant variation on a day time scale. Intriguingly, the oscillation of rotation measure supports that the local contribution can change sign, which indicates the magnetic field reversal along the line of sight. Here we present a physical model that explains observed characteristics of FRB 20201124A and proposes that repeating signal comes from a binary system containing a magnetar and a Be star with a decretion disk. When the magnetar approaches the periastron, the propagation of radio waves through the disk of the Be star naturally leads to the observed varying rotation measure, depolarization, large scattering timescale, and Faraday conversion. This study will prompt to search for FRB signals from Be/X-ray binaries.

Abstract:The 2007 discovery of fast radio bursts (FRBs), bright and millisecond-duration astronomical radio pulses, presented to the astronomical community a tantalizing opportunity into the transient Universe. Understanding the origins, mechanisms and applications of FRBs is currently one of the most rapidly evolving sub-fields of astrophysics. Most FRBs originate from far outside the Milky Way and are many orders of magnitude more luminous than other known bursting radio sources, particularly pulsars (neutron stars). The total FRB population now stands at approximately 600 published sources, 24 repeaters, and 19 with localized host galaxies. Most FRBs appear to be one-off, only about four percent of the FRBs are now known to repeat. While the volume of observations grows at a breakneck pace, the overarching question of the field remains: "Where do FRBs come from?" Interestingly, FRBs can be hosted in a variety of galaxy types and environments. FRB 20121102 was successfully located in a low-mass and low-metallicity dwarf galaxy, coincident with a persistent radio source. VLBI observations have demonstrated that this source is compact. With the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST), FRB 20121102 has been extensively observed, resulting in the discovery of 1652 independent bursts with a peak burst rate of 122 per hour and over three orders of magnitude variation in energy. For the first time, the burst energy distribution can be fully recovered and is found to be bimodal, suggesting that there may be more than one emission mechanisms or emission sites or beam shapes. In contrast to the single power-law energy distribution commonly found for FRBs, a characteristic peak in the burst rate energy distribution is found at 4.8x1037 erg. The estimated total isotropic energy, 6.4x1046 erg, released during the 47-day observational campaign, corresponds to approximately 38% of the available magnetar spin energy. Despite the high burst rate, no periodicity has been found. Higher time-resolution data, sustained monitoring, and better localization from the last 2-3 years have provided a wealth of information and significant discoveries regarding the origin of FRBs. A supremely bright FRB-like burst (FRB 20200428) has been detected from a Galactic magnetar SGR 1935+2154 by STARE2 and CHIME/FRB. It provides strong evidence linking magnetars to sources of FRBs. The explosively growing number of FRBs and studies of individual FRBs start to reveal the source and radiation mechanisms of FRBs. Significant breakthroughs rely on the emergence of new observational facilities as well as a growing breadth of expertise joining the field. With ever-growing capabilities of observing facilities and processing power, the FRB sample in the next 5 years will supersede that of radio pulsars from the past half century. We are witnessing the unveiling of a dynamic Universe.

Abstract:The event rate, energy distribution and time-domain behaviour of repeating fast radio bursts (FRBs) contain essential information regarding their physical nature and central engine, which are as yet unknown 1 , 2 . As the first precisely localized source, FRB 121102 (refs. 3 – 5 ) has been extensively observed and shows non-Poisson clustering of bursts over time and a power-law energy distribution 6 – 8 . However, the extent of the energy distribution towards the fainter end was not known. Here we report the detection of 1,652 independent bursts with a peak burst rate of 122 h −1 , in 59.5 hours spanning 47 days. A peak in the isotropic equivalent energy distribution is found to be approximately 4.8 × 10 37 erg at 1.25 GHz, below which the detection of bursts is suppressed. The burst energy distribution is bimodal, and well characterized by a combination of a log-normal function and a generalized Cauchy function. The large number of bursts in hour-long spans allows sensitive periodicity searches between 1 ms and 1,000 s. The non-detection of any periodicity or quasi-periodicity poses challenges for models involving a single rotating compact object. The high burst rate also implies that FRBs must be generated with a high radiative efficiency, disfavouring emission mechanisms with large energy requirements or contrived triggering conditions.

Abstract:A bright radio burst was newly discovered in SGR 1935+2154, which exhibits some fast radio burst (FRB)-like temporal and frequency properties, suggesting a neutron star (NS)/magnetar magnetospheric origin of FRBs. We propose an explanation of the temporal and frequency properties of sub-pulses of repeating FRBs based on the generic geometry within the framework of charged-bunching coherent curvature radiation in the magnetosphere. The sub-pulses in a radio burst come from bunches of charged particles moving along different magnetic field lines. Their radiation beams sweep across the line of sight at different times, and those radiating at the more curved part tend to be seen earlier and at higher frequency. However, by considering bunches generated at slightly different times, we find there is also a small probability that the emission from the less curved part can be seen earlier. We simulate the time–frequency structures by deriving various forms of the electric acceleration field in the magnetosphere. This structure of sub-pulses is a natural consequence of coherent curvature radiation from an NS/magnetar magnetosphere with suddenly and violently triggered sparks. We apply this model to explain the time–frequency structure within a specific dipolar configuration by invoking the transient pulsar-like sparking from the inner gap of a slowly rotating NS, and we have also applied it to more generic configurations.

Abstract:Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are cosmic sources that emit millisecond-duration radio pulses with a wide range of luminosities and yet unknown origin(s) (Petroff et al. 2019; cordes et al. 2019). A subset of FRBs were found to repeat, the prototype of which is the first precisely-located FRB 121102 (Spitler et al. 2016), residing in a dwarf galaxy at redshift z=0.193 (Chatterjee 2017; Tendulkar et al. 2017). The source has been observed by most major telescopes and shows non-Poisson clustering of bursts over time, the hitherto highest burst rate, and a burst isotropic equivalent energy largely consistent with a power-law (Law et al. 2017; zhang et al. 2018; Gourdji et al. 2019), all of which are crucial characteristics to be compared to non-repeating sources. However, due to sensitivity limits, no true energy distribution of any FRB is known. Here we report the detection of 1652 independent bursts, more than quadruple the total of all previously published ones combined, in a total of 59.5 observing hours spanning 47 days using the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). The peak burst rate of 122 hr-1is by far the highest ever observed of any FRB. A characteristic peak in the isotropic equivalent energy distribution is found to be ~4.8×1037 erg at 1.25 GHz, suggesting a possible threshold for producing abundant coherent radio bursts from FRBs. The burst energy distribution is optimally described by a bimodal distribution consisting of a log-normal function plus a Cauchy function. While no periodicity was found between 1 ms and 1000 s, and the majority of the burst arrival times are consistent with being random, there exists a visible peak in the waiting time distribution at about 3.4 ms, corresponding to significant clustering. Our results start to reveal the stochastic nature of abundant weaker bursts, which could be present in other FRB sources, apparently repeating or not. FRB generation mechanisms must be efficient and economical. Expensive triggers and/or contrived conditions for burst production seem unlikely.
A Candidate Period of 4.605 Days for FRB 20121102A and One Possible Implication of Its Origin

Abstract:A firm establishment of the presence or the lack of periodicity in repeating fast radio bursts is crucial for determining their origins. Here, we compile 1145 radio bursts of FRB 20121102A with fluence larger than 0.15 Jy ms from observations using the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope, the Arecibo Observatory, the Green Bank Telescope, the Effelsberg Telescope, the MeerKAT Telescope, the Lovell Telescope, the Deep Space Network 70 m radio telescopes, the Very Large Array, and the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope, spanning the time interval of MJD 57175−58776. A quasi-period of 157.1 − 4.8 + 5.2 days and a candidate quasi-period of 4.605 − 0.010 + 0.003 days are found through the phase-folding probability binomial analysis. The former is consistent with previous findings and the latter is new. The 4.605 day periodicity is more obvious in high-energy bursts with fluence larger than 1 × 10 38 erg. The presence of these (candidate) quasi-periods, together with the corresponding width of burst accumulation in the phase space, are consistent with the bursts originating from a binary degenerate star system with a close-by planet around the primary neutron star.

A Comprehensive Analysis on Repeating Fast Radio Bursts

Abstract:Nearly 700 fast radio burst (FRB) sources have been detected till now, among which 29 FRBs are found to burst out repeatedly. Although a firm connection between at least some FRBs and magnetars has been established, the trigger mechanism and radiation process in these enigma phenomena are still highly controversial. In this study, we build a sample of 16 repeating FRBs from which at least five bursts have been detected, including the most active four repeaters of FRBs 20121102A, 20180916B, 20190520B and 20201124A. Various key parameters of their bursts are collected from the literature, which include the arrival time, pulse width, dispersion measure (DM), Faraday rotation measure (RM), bandwidth, waiting time, peak flux and fluence. The distribution and time evolution of these parameters are investigated. Potential correlations between various parameter pairs are also extensively explored. The behaviors of different repeaters are then compared. It is found that the DM of FRB 20121102A seems to increase continuously on a long timescale. While the DM of most repeaters varies in a narrow range of $\pm 3$ cm$^{-3}$ pc, FRB 20190520B is found to have a large variation range of $\pm 12$ cm$^{-3}$ pc. RM evolves with time in a much more chaos behavior in different repeaters. A linear correlation is found between the absolute mean RM and $\rm {DM}_{Host}$, which may provide a method to estimate the redshift of FRBs. Generally, the waiting time shows a similar bimodal distribution for the active repeating sources. The implications of these features to the underlying physics are discussed.

In this work we report the discovery of a bright, highly-polarised burst of radio emission at low Galactic latitude as part of a wide-field survey for transient and variable radio sources. ASKAP\,J175534.9$-$252749.1 does not appear to repeat, with only a single intense two-minute $\sim$200-mJy burst detected from 60~hours of observations. The burst morphology and polarisation properties are comparable to those of classical pulsars but the duration is more than one hundred times longer, analogous to ULPs. Combined with the existing ULP population, this suggests that these sources have a strong Galactic latitude dependence and hints at an unexplored population of transient and variable radio sources in the thin disk of the Milky Way. The resemblance of this burst with both ULPs and pulsars calls for a unified coherent emission model for objects with spin periods from milliseconds to tens of minutes. However, whether or not these are all neutron stars or have the same underlying power source remains open for debate.

Abstract:Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are brief, luminous pulses with unknown physical origin. The repetition pattern of FRBs contains essential information about their physical nature and emission mechanisms. Using the two largest samples of FRB 20121102A and FRB 20201124, we report that the sources of the two FRBs reveal memory over a large range of timescales, from a few minutes to about an hour. The memory is detected from the coherent growths in burst-rate structures and the Hurst exponent. The waiting time distribution displays a power-law tail, which is consistent with a Poisson model with a time-varying rate. From cellular automaton simulations, we find that these characteristics can be well understood within the physical framework of a self-organized criticality system driven in a correlation way, such as random walk functions. These properties indicate that the triggers of bursts are correlated, preferring the crustal failure mechanism of neutron stars.

Abstract:Nearly 700 fast radio burst (FRB) sources have been detected so far, of which 29 are found to burst out repeatedly. Although a firm connection between at least some FRBs and magnetars has been established, the trigger mechanism and radiation process in these enigmatic phenomena are still highly controversial. In this study, we build a sample of 16 repeating FRBs from which at least five bursts have been detected, including the most active four repeaters of FRBs 20121102A, 20180916B, 20190520B, and 20201124A. Various key parameters of their bursts are collected from the literature, which include the arrival time, pulse width, dispersion measure (DM), Faraday rotation measure (RM), bandwidth, waiting time, peak flux, and fluence. The distribution and time evolution of these parameters are investigated. Potential correlations between various parameter pairs are also extensively explored. The behaviors of different repeaters are then compared. It is found that the DM of FRB 20121102A seems to increase continuously on a long timescale. While the DM of most repeaters varies in a narrow range of +/- 3 cm-3 pc, FRB 20190520B is found to have a large variation range of +/- 12 cm-3 pc. The RM evolves with time in a much more chaotic behavior in different repeaters. A linear correlation is found between the absolute mean RM and DMHost, which may provide a method to estimate the redshift of FRBs. Generally, the waiting time shows a similar bimodal distribution for the active repeating sources. The implications of these features to the underlying physics are discussed.
