Abstract:In this paper, we first prove the strong Birkhoff Ergodic Theorem for subharmonic functions with the irrational shift on the Torus. Then, we apply it to the analytic quasi-periodic Jacobi cocycles and show that for suitable frequency and coupling number, if the Lyapunov exponent of these cocycles is positive at one point, then it is positive on an interval centered at this point and Hölder continuous in \begin{document}$ E $\end{document} on this interval. What's more, if the coupling number of the potential is large, then the Lyapunov exponent is always positive for all irrational frequencies and Hölder continuous in \begin{document}$ E $\end{document} for all finite Liouville frequencies. For the Schrödinger cocycles, a special case of the Jacobi ones, its Lyapunov exponent is also Hölder continuous in the frequency and the lengths of the intervals where the Hölder condition of the Lyapunov exponent holds only depend on the coupling number.
Furstenberg systems of pretentious and MRT multiplicative functions

Abstract:We prove structural results for measure preserving systems, called Furstenberg systems, naturally associated with bounded multiplicative functions. We show that for all pretentious multiplicative functions these systems always have rational discrete spectrum and, as a consequence, zero entropy. We obtain several other refined structural and spectral results, one consequence of which is that the Archimedean characters are the only pretentious multiplicative functions that have Furstenberg systems with trivial rational spectrum, another is that a pretentious multiplicative function has ergodic Furstenberg systems if and only if it pretends to be a Dirichlet character, and a last one is that for any fixed pretentious multiplicative function all its Furstenberg systems are isomorphic. We also study structural properties of Furstenberg systems of a class of multiplicative functions, introduced by Matomäki, Radziwill, and Tao, which lie in the intermediate zone between pretentiousness and strong aperiodicity. In a work of the last two authors and Gomilko, several examples of this class with exotic ergodic behavior were identified, and here we complement this study and discover some new unexpected phenomena. Lastly, we prove that Furstenberg systems of general bounded multiplicative functions have divisible spectrum. When these systems are obtained using logarithmic averages, we show that trivial rational spectrum implies a strong dilation invariance property, called strong stationarity, but, quite surprisingly, this property fails when the systems are obtained using Cesàro averages.

Abstract:To apply the Euler system method to a $p$-adic Galois representation $T$, one needs the existence of a $\sigma \in G_{\mathbb{Q}(\mu_{p^{\infty}})}$ such that $V/(\sigma-1)V$ is free of rank one over the coefficient ring: we say that such a $\sigma$ is an Euler-suitable element for $V$. Given a non-CM classical newform $f$ of weight $k \geq 2$ and character $\chi$, a classical newform $g$ of weight $1$ and character $\psi$, and a prime ideal $\mathfrak{p}$ of residue characteristic $p$ of a sufficiently large number field, we consider the situation where $V=V_{f,g,\mathfrak{p}}$ is the tensor product of the $\mathfrak{p}$-adic representations attached to $f$ and $g$. D. Loeffler asked the following question: is is true that if $\chi\psi \neq 1$, then there is an Euler-suitable element for $V_{f,g,\mathfrak{p}}$ for all but finitely many $\mathfrak{p}$? He gave a positive answer when $f,g$ had coprime conductors. We give several weaker sufficient conditions to answer this question in the affirmative. As an application, we remove some of the technical assumptions in the version of the Bloch-Kato Conjecture proved in

Abstract:Let $f:\mathbb{N}\to \mathbb{D}$ be a multiplicative function. Under the merely necessary assumption that $f$ is non-pretentious (in the sense of Granville and Soundararajan), we show that for any pair of distinct integer shifts $h_1,h_2$ the two-point correlation $$\frac{1}{x}\sum_{n\leq x}{f(n+h_1)\overline{f}(n+h_2)}$$ tends to $0$ along a set of $x\in\mathbb{N}$ of full upper logarithmic density. We also show that the same result holds for the $k$-point correlations $$\frac{1}{x}\sum_{n\leq x}{f(n+h_1)\cdots f(n+h_k)}$$ if $k$ is odd and $f$ is a real-valued non-pretentious function. Previously, the vanishing of correlations was known only under stronger non-pretentiousness hypotheses on $f$ by the works of Tao, and Tao and the third author. We derive several applications, including: (i) A classification of $\pm 1$-valued completely multiplicative functions that omit a length four sign pattern, solving a 1974 conjecture of R.H. Hudson. (ii) A proof that a class of "Liouville-like" functions satisfies the unweighted Elliott conjecture of all orders, solving a problem of de la Rue. (iii) Constructing examples of multiplicative $f:\mathbb{N}\to \{-1,0,1\}$ with a given (unique) Furstenberg system, answering a question of Lemańczyk. (iv) A density version of the Erdős discrepancy theorem of Tao.

Formulations of Furstenberg's $\times 2 \times 3$ conjecture in complex analysis and operator algebras

Abstract:Furstenberg's $\times 2 \times 3$ conjecture has remained a central open problem in ergodic theory for over $50$ years, and it serves as the basic test case for a broad class of rigidity phenomena which are believed to hold in number-theoretic dynamics. More recently, two related statements have appeared in the literature: a question about periodic approximation raised by Levit and Vigdorovich in the context of approximate group theory and a periodic equidistribution conjecture formulated by Lindenstrauss. The purpose of this article is to provide equivalent formulations for these three statements in a complex-analytic setting and an operator-algebraic setting, giving nine conjectures grouped into three triples. The complex-analytic conjectures involve so-called Carathéodory functions on the unit disk that satisfy a certain functional identity, and we find that Furstenberg's conjecture is equivalent to the assertion that every such function is a convex combination of rational functions. The operator-algebraic conjectures involve tracial states on the full group $C^\ast$-algebra of a certain semidirect product, which is related to Baumslag-Solitar groups.

Tamagawa number conjecture for CM modular forms and Rankin--Selberg convolutions

Abstract:Let $E/F$ be an elliptic curve defined over a number field $F$ with complex multiplication by the ring of integers of an imaginary quadratic field $K$ such that the torsion points of $E$ generate over $F$ an abelian extension of $K$. In this paper we prove the $p$-part of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer formula for $E/F$ in analytic rank $1$ for primes $p>3$ split in $K$. This was previously known for $F=\mathbb{Q}$ by work of Rubin as a consequence of his proof of the Mazur--Swinnerton-Dyer ``main conjecture'' for rational CM elliptic curves, but the problem remained wide open for general $F$. The approach in this paper, based on a novel application of an idea of Bertolini--Darmon--Prasanna to consider a carefully chosen decomposable Rankin--Selberg convolution of two CM modular forms having the Hecke $L$-function of interest as one of the factors, circumvents the use of $p$-adic heights and Bertrand's $p$-adic transcendence results in previous approaches. It also yields a proof of similar results for CM abelian varieties $A/K$, and for CM modular forms of higher weight.

Abstract:In this article, we present streamlined proofs of results of Ankeny, Artin, and Chowla concerning the fundamental unit of the real quadratic field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{p})$ for primes $p\equiv 1 \bmod{4}$ while providing a generalization of their conjecture. Using our generalization, we relate Fermat quotients of quadratic non-residues $\bmod{p}$ to sums of harmonic numbers.

Abstract:This short and simple communication is motivated by recent papers by L. Colzani and A. Kochergin. We give a brief analysis of an example by Poincaré related to sums of the type $ \sum_{k=0}^{t-1} f(k{\alpha}+{x})$ where $f$ is a continuous periodic function and $\alpha$ is irrationaland its recent generalisations. Most of the constructions under consideration are well-known. In this note, we just wanted to bring all the results together and give a general and improved multi-dimensional formulation of a recent result by A. Kochergin, prove non-existence of a universal continuous function and discuss some of the related results in terms of Diophantine Approximation. In particular, in our opinion smoothness results involving Diophantine exponents $\omega$, $\hat{\omega}$ and $\hat{\lambda}$ had never been documented before.

Abstract:We show that the modular symbol $(0,\infty)$, considered as an element of the dual of Emerton's completed cohomology, interpolates Kato's Euler system at classical points, and we deduce from this a factorisation of Beilinson-Kato's system as a product of two symbols $(0,\infty)$ (an algebraic analog of Rankin's method). The proof uses the $p$-adic local Langlands correspondence for ${\mathbf GL}_2({\mathbf Q}_p)$ and Emerton's factorization of the completed cohomology of the tower of modular curves for which we provide a new proof resting upon the construction of a Kirillov model for the completed cohomology, and which we refine by imposing conditions at classical points; the existence of such a refinement is a manifestation of an analyticity property for $p$-adic periods of modular forms.

Hilbert-Poincaré series of matroid Chow rings and intersection cohomology

Abstract:We study the Hilbert series of four objects arising in the Chow-theoretic and Kazhdan-Lusztig framework of matroids. These are, respectively, the Hilbert series of the Chow ring, the augmented Chow ring, the intersection cohomology module, and its stalk at the empty flat. We develop a parallelism between the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial of a matroid and the Hilbert series of its Chow ring. This extends to a parallelism between the $Z$-polynomial of a matroid and the Hilbert series of its augmented Chow ring. This suggests to bring ideas from one framework to the other. Our two main motivations are the real-rootedness conjecture for all of these polynomials, and the problem of computing them. We provide several intrinsic definitions of these invariants; also, by leveraging that they are valuations under matroid polytope subdivisions, we deduce a fast way for computing them for a large class of matroids. Uniform matroids are a case of combinatorial interest; we link the resulting polynomials with certain real-rooted families such as the (binomial) Eulerian polynomials, and we settle a conjecture of Hameister, Rao, and Simpson. Furthermore, we prove the real-rootedness of the Hilbert series of the augmented Chow rings of uniform matroids via a result of Haglund and Zhang; and in addition, we prove a version of a conjecture of Gedeon in the Chow setting: uniform matroids maximize coefficient-wisely these polynomials for matroids with fixed rank and size. By relying on the nonnegativity of the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials and the semi-small decompositions of Braden, Huh, Matherne, Proudfoot, and Wang, we strengthen the unimodality of the Hilbert series of Chow rings, augmented Chow rings, and intersection cohomologies to $\gamma$-positivity, a property for palindromic polynomials that lies between unimodality and real-rootedness; this settles a conjecture of Ferroni, Nasr, and Vecchi.

On the structure of the Bloch--Kato Selmer groups of modular forms over anticyclotomic $\mathbf{Z}_p$-towers

Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime number and let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field in which $p$ is split. Let $f$ be a modular form with good reduction at $p$. We study the variation of the Bloch--Kato Selmer groups and the Bloch--Kato--Shafarevich--Tate groups of $f$ over the anticyclotomic $\mathbf{Z}_p$-extension $K_\infty$ of $K$. In particular, we show that under the generalized Heegner hypothesis, if the $p$-localization of the generalized Heegner cycle attached to $f$ is primitive and certain local conditions hold, then the Pontryagin dual of the Selmer group of $f$ over $K_\infty$ is free over the Iwasawa algebra. Consequently, the Bloch--Kato--Shafarevich--Tate groups of $f$ vanish. This generalizes earlier works of Matar and Matar--Nekovář on elliptic curves. Furthermore, our proof applies uniformly to the ordinary and non-ordinary settings.

Abstract:A further step towards a possible classification of $p$-groups by coclass was made by Eick & Leedham-Green in 2007. They gave a constructive proof of the ultimate periodicity of shaved coclass graphs. By giving a counterexample we show that there is a mistake in their proof, and we fill this gap.

Abstract:Let $p>3$ be a prime. In this paper we develop a new kind of anticyclotomic local $\pm$-Iwasawa theory at $p$ for Hecke characters of quadratic imaginary fields which is valid for all ramification types of $p$ (split, inert and ramified). As an application we deduce the converse of Gross-Zagier-Kolyvagin theorem for these CM forms, which states that Selmer rank one implies analytic rank one. To carry out the Iwasawa theory argument we employ a recent construction of a new type of $p$-adic $L$-function by Andreatta-Iovita, and generalized by Yangyu Fan to Shimura curves in the Appendix, and a ``virtual Heenger family'' made via a limiting procedure from a Heegner family along Coleman-Mazur eigencurve constructed by Jetchev-Loeffler-Zerbes.

Matroidal Mixed Eulerian Numbers

Abstract:We make a systematic study of matroidal mixed Eulerian numbers which are certain intersection numbers in the matroid Chow ring generalizing the mixed Eulerian numbers introduced by Postnikov. These numbers are shown to be valuative and obey a log-concavity relation. We establish recursion formulas and use them to relate matroidal mixed Eulerian numbers to the characteristic and Tutte polynomials, reproving results of Huh-Katz and Berget-Spink-Tseng. Generalizing Postnikov, we show that these numbers are equal to certain weighted counts of binary trees. Lastly, we study these numbers for perfect matroid designs, proving that they generalize the remixed Eulerian numbers of Nadeau-Tewari.

Motivic Gauss and Jacobi sums

Abstract:We study the Gauss and Jacobi sums from a viewpoint of motives. We exhibit isomorphisms between Chow motives arising from the Artin-Schreier curve and the Fermat varieties over a finite field, that can be regarded as (and yield a new proof of) classically known relations among Gauss and Jacobi sums such as Davenport-Hasse's multiplication formula. As a key step, we define motivic analogues of the Gauss and Jacobi sums as algebraic correspondences, and show that they represent the Frobenius endomorphisms of such motives. This generalizes Coleman's result for curves. These results are applied to investigate the group of invertible Chow motives with coefficients in a cyclotomic field.

Abstract:We define an infinite sequence of generalizations, parametrized by an integer m ≥ 1 m \ge 1 , of the Stieltjes–Rogers and Thron–Rogers polynomials; they arise as the power-series expansions of some branched continued fractions, and as the generating polynomials for m m -Dyck and m m -Schröder paths with height-dependent weights. We prove that all of these sequences of polynomials are coefficientwise Hankel-totally positive, jointly in all the (infinitely many) indeterminates. We then apply this theory to prove the coefficientwise Hankel-total positivity for combinatorially interesting sequences of polynomials. Enumeration of unlabeled ordered trees and forests gives rise to multivariate Fuss–Narayana polynomials and Fuss–Narayana symmetric functions. Enumeration of increasing (labeled) ordered trees and forests gives rise to multivariate Eulerian polynomials and Eulerian symmetric functions, which include the univariate m m th-order Eulerian polynomials as specializations. We also find branched continued fractions for ratios of contiguous hypergeometric series r F s {}_r \! F_s for arbitrary r r and s s , which generalize Gauss’ continued fraction for ratios of contiguous 2 F 1 {}_2 \! F_1 ; and for s = 0 s=0 we prove the coefficientwise Hankel-total positivity. Finally, we extend the branched continued fractions to ratios of contiguous basic hypergeometric series r φ s {}_r \! \phi _s .

The Chow and augmented Chow polynomials of uniform matroids

Abstract:We provide explicit combinatorial formulas for the Chow polynomial and for the augmented Chow polynomial of uniform matroids, thereby proving a conjecture by Ferroni. These formulas refine existing formulas by Hampe and by Eur, Huh, and Larson, offering a combinatorial interpretation of the coefficients based on Schubert matroids. As a byproduct, we count Schubert matroids by rank, number of loops, and cogirth.

Abstract:Let K = Q(root-q), where q is any prime number congruent to 7 modulo 8, and let O be the ring of integers of K. The prime 2 splits in K, say 2O = pp*, and there is a unique Z(2)-extension K-infinity of K which is unramified outside p. Let H be the Hilbert class field of K, and write H-infinity = HK infinity. Let M(H-infinity) be the maximal abelian 2-extension of H-infinity which is unramified outside the primes above p, and put X(H-infinity) = Gal(M(H-infinity)/H-infinity). We prove that X(H-infinity) is always a finitely generated Z(2)-module, by an elliptic analogue of Sinnott's cyclotomic argument. We then use this result to prove for the first time the weak p-adic Leopoldt conjecture for the compositum J(infinity) of K-infinity with arbitrary quadratic extensions J of H. We also prove some new cases of the finite generation of the Mordell-Weil group E(J(infinity)) modulo torsion of certain elliptic curves E with complex multiplication by O.
