Abstract:We construct families of log K3 surfaces and study the arithmetic of their members. We use this to produce explicit surfaces with an order 5 Brauer-Manin obstruction to the integral Hasse principle.

Abstract:Given a smooth projective variety over a number field and an element of its Brauer group, we consider the specialization of the Brauer class at a place of good reduction for the variety and the class. We are interested in the case of K3 surfaces. We show that a Brauer class on a very general polarized K3 surface over a number field becomes trivial after specialization at a set of places of positive natural density. We deduce that there exist cubic fourfolds over number fields that are conjecturally irrational, with rational reduction at a positive proportion of places. We also deduce that there are twisted derived equivalent K3 surfaces which become derived equivalent after reduction at a positive proportion of places.

Abstract:We study the integral Brauer--Manin obstruction for affine diagonal cubic surfaces, which we employ to construct the first counterexamples to the integral Hasse principle in this setting. We then count in three natural ways how such counterexamples are distributed across the family of affine diagonal cubic surfaces and how often such surfaces satisfy integral strong approximation off $\infty$.

Abstract:We describe the Hodge theory of brilliant families of K3 surfaces. Their characteristic feature is a close link between the Hodge structures of any two fibres over points in the Noether-Lefschetz locus. Twistor deformations, the analytic Tate-Safarevic group, and one-dimensional Shimura special cycles are covered by the theory. In this setting, the Brauer group is viewed as the Noether-Lefschetz locus of the Brauer family or as the specialization of the Noether-Lefschetz loci in a family of approaching twistor spaces. Passing from one algebraic twistor fibre to another, which by construction is a transcendental operation, is here viewed as first deforming along the more algebraic Brauer family and then along a family of algebraic K3 surfaces.

Abstract:Following [GS22], [LM20] and [CWX20], we study the Brauer-Manin obstruction for integral points on similar Markoff-type cubic surfaces. In particular, we construct a family of counterexamples to strong approximation which can be explained by the Brauer-Manin obstruction with some counting results of similar nature to those in [LM20] and [CWX20]. We also give some counterexamples to the integral Hasse principle which cannot be explained by the (algebraic) Brauer-Manin obstruction.

On two-elementary K3 surfaces with finite automorphism group

Abstract:We study complex algebraic K3 surfaces of Picard ranks 11, 12, and 13 of finite automorphism group that admit a Jacobian elliptic fibration with a section of order two. We prove that the K3 surfaces admit a birational model isomorphic to a projective quartic hypersurface and construct geometrically the frames of all supported Jacobian elliptic fibrations. We determine the dual graphs of all smooth rational curves for these K3 surfaces, the polarizing divisors, and the embedding of the reducible fibers in each frame into the corresponding dual graph.

Abstract:An element in the Brauer group of a general complex projective $K3$ surface $S$ defines a sublattice of the transcendental lattice of $S$. We consider those elements of prime order for which this sublattice is Hodge-isometric to the transcendental lattice of another K3 surface $X$. We recall that this defines a finite map between moduli spaces of polarized K3 surfaces and we compute its degree. We show how the Picard lattice of $X$ determines the Picard lattice of $S$ in the case that the Picard number of $X$ is two.

Abstract:We study the virtual geometry of the moduli spaces of curves and sheaves on K3 surfaces in primitive classes. Equivalences relating the reduced Gromov-Witten invariants of K3 surfaces to characteristic numbers of stable pairs moduli spaces are proven. As a consequence, we prove the Katz-Klemm-Vafa conjecture evaluating $\lambda_g$ integrals (in all genera) in terms of explicit modular forms. Indeed, all K3 invariants in primitive classes are shown to be governed by modular forms. The method of proof is by degeneration to elliptically fibered rational surfaces. New formulas relating reduced virtual classes on K3 surfaces to standard virtual classes after degeneration are needed for both maps and sheaves. We also prove a Gromov-Witten/Pairs correspondence for toric 3-folds. Our approach uses a result of Kiem and Li to produce reduced classes. In Appendix A, we answer a number of questions about the relationship between the Kiem-Li approach, traditional virtual cycles, and symmetric obstruction theories. The interplay between the boundary geometry of the moduli spaces of curves, K3 surfaces, and modular forms is explored in Appendix B by A. Pixton.

Abstract:Kummer surfaces are special quartic surfaces that admit $16$ nodes. The automorphisms of K3 Kummer surfaces are rich and complicated. Based on the results of Keum and Kondō, and as a continuation of the recent result by He and Yang, we lift $45$ classically known automorphisms of Kummer surfaces to pseudo-automorphisms of a threefold, the blow-up of $\mathbb{P}^3$ along $6$ points and $15$ lines. We give a description of a fundamental domain of the group generated by all the known pseudo-automorphisms on this threefold.

Abstract:Let $X\subset ¶^5$ be a smooth cubic fourfold. A well known conjecture asserts that $X$ is rational if and only if there an Hodge theoretically associated K3 surface $S$. The surface $S$ can be associated to $X$ in two other different ways. If there is an equivalence of categories $\sA_X \simeq D^b(S,\alpha)$ where $\sA_X$ is the Kuznetsov component of $D^b(X)$ and $\alpha$ is a Brauer class, or if there is an isomorphism between the transcendental motive $t(X)$ and the (twisted ) transcendental motive of a K3 surface$S$. In this note we consider families of cubic fourfolds with a finite group of automorphisms and describe the cases where there is an associated K3 surface in one of the above senses.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety defined over a number field $k$ that has Brauer-Manin obstruction to the existence of rational points. We study the orders of the Brauer classes which capture the obstruction. We prove that one may require elements of arbitrarily large order to capture the obstruction. In other words, the exponent of the group which captures the obstruction has no upper bound.

Abstract:We investigate obstruction classes of moduli spaces of sheaves on K3 surfaces. We extend previous results by Caldararu, explicitly determining the obstruction class and its order in the Brauer group. Our main theorem establishes a short exact sequence relating the Brauer group of the moduli space to that of the underlying K3 surface. This provides a criterion for when the moduli space is fine, generalising well-known results for K3 surfaces. Additionally, we explore applications to Ogg-Shafarevich theory for Beauville-Mukai systems. Furthermore, we investigate birational equivalences of Beauville-Mukai systems on elliptic K3 surfaces, presenting a complete characterisation of such equivalences.

Abstract:We study the symplectic action of the group (Z/2Z)^2 on a K3 surface X: we describe its action on H^2(X,Z) and the maps induced in cohomology by the rational quotient maps; we give a lattice-theoretic characterization of the resolution of singularities of the quotient X/i, where i is any of the involutions in (Z/2Z)^2. Assuming X is projective, we describe the correspondence between irreducible components of its moduli space, and those of the resolution of singularities of its quotients: this being the first description of this correspondence for a non-cyclic action, we see new phenomena, of which we provide explicit examples assuming $X$ has a polarization of degree 4.

Abstract:In the spirit of the classical theory for K3 surfaces, we construct a Hausdorff fine moduli space for families of marked K3 surfaces over smooth rational curves in the K3 period domain. This moduli space admits an étale holomorphic map to the parameter space for such rational curves, which assumes the role of a period space for this moduli problem. Over an open subset containing all twistor cycles, we construct a family of such families that is a universal small deformation for every twistor family. Finally, small deformations of K3 twistor families are shown to induce complex-hyperkähler metrics on members of the families via the original complex version of Penrose's Non-linear Graviton construction. This answers a question posed independently by Fels--Huckleberry--Wolf and Looijenga. Generalizations to higher-dimensional irreducible holomorphic-symplectic manifolds are studied throughout.
