Abstract:One terahertz (THz) waveguide based on 3D printed metallic photonic crystals is experimentally and numerically demonstrated in 0.1-0.6 THz, which consists of periodic metal rod arrays (MRAs). Results demonstrated that such waveguide supports two waveguide modes such as fundamental and high-order TM-modes. The high-order TM-mode shows high field confinement, and it is sensitive to the geometry changes. By tuning the metal rod interspace, the spectral positions, bandwidths, and transmittances of the high-frequency band can be optimized. The investigation shows that a mode conversion between high-order modes occurs when the MRAs symmetry is broken via change the air interspace.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to explore the geometry - dependent field characteristics of terahertz (THz) waveguides based on 3D - printed metal photonic crystals (composed of metal - rod arrays, namely MRAs). Specifically, the researchers optimize the spectral position, bandwidth, and transmittance of the high - order TM mode by changing the spacing (Gx) between the metal rods. It is found that by adjusting the spacing of the metal rods, the conversion between waveguide modes can be achieved, and a detailed analysis of the field performance of the high - order TM mode at the MRA - air interface is carried out, which provides flexibility for the application of terahertz waves in the fields of communication and sensing. The key points mentioned in the paper include: - **Waveguide Modes**: The research shows that this waveguide supports two modes, namely the fundamental mode and the high - order TM mode. The high - order TM mode exhibits high field confinement and is sensitive to geometric changes. - **Influence of Geometric Parameters**: By adjusting the spacing between the metal rods, the spectral position, bandwidth, and transmittance of the high - frequency band can be optimized. - **Mode Conversion**: When the symmetry of the MRA is broken due to the change of the air spacing, the conversion between high - order modes will occur. - **Experiment and Simulation**: The experimental results are in good agreement with the 3D - FDTD simulation results, verifying the validity of the theoretical prediction. These research results are of great significance for the development of high - efficiency and low - loss terahertz waveguide devices, especially in application scenarios where the propagation characteristics of terahertz waves need to be precisely controlled.
