Abstract:Let f be an Anosov diffeomorphism on a nilmanifold. We consider Birkhoff sums for a Holder continuous observation along periodic orbits. We show that if there are two Birkhoff sums distributed at both sides of zero, then the set of Birkhoff sums of all periodic points is dense in the whole set of real numbers.
Dynamical Systems
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the distribution of Birkhoff sums on periodic orbits in Anosov diffeomorphism systems. Specifically, the author studies an Anosov diffeomorphism \( f \) on a compact smooth manifold without boundary, and the distribution properties of the Birkhoff sum \( S_\phi^f(z) \) of a Hölder continuous observation function \( \phi \) along periodic orbits. The main goal of the paper is to prove that if there exist two periodic points \( p \) and \( q \) such that \( S_\phi^f(p) < 0 < S_\phi^f(q) \), then the set of Birkhoff sums of all periodic points \( \{ S_\phi^f(z) \mid z \in \text{Per}(f) \} \) is dense in the set of real numbers \( \mathbb{R} \). ### Main Conclusions The main conclusion of the paper is: **Theorem 1.1**: Let \( f \) be an Anosov diffeomorphism on a nilmanifold \( M = G/\Gamma \). Suppose the observation function \( \phi: M \to \mathbb{R} \) is Hölder continuous, and there exist two periodic points \( p, q \in \text{Per}(f) \) satisfying \( S_\phi^f(p) < 0 < S_\phi^f(q) \). Then the set \( \{ S_\phi^f(z) \mid z \in \text{Per}(f) \} \) is dense in \( \mathbb{R} \). ### Key Concepts 1. **Anosov Diffeomorphism**: A diffeomorphism \( f: M \to M \) is called an Anosov diffeomorphism if there exists a Riemannian metric \( \| \cdot \| \) and a continuous \( Df \)-invariant splitting \( TM = E^s \oplus E^u \), and a constant \( \lambda \in (0, 1) \) such that for each unit vector \( v^* \in E^* \) (where \( * = s, u \) ), we have \( \| Df(v^s) \| < \lambda < 1 < \lambda^{-1} < \| Df(v^u) \| \). 2. **Birkhoff Sum**: For a periodic point \( z \) and its period \( \pi(z) \), the Birkhoff sum of the observation function \( \phi \) along the orbit of \( z \) is defined as: \[ S_\phi^f(z) = \sum_{i = 0}^{\pi(z)-1} \phi(f^i(z)). \] 3. **Periodic Point**: A point \( z \) is called a periodic point if there exists a positive integer \( \pi(z) \) such that \( f^{\pi(z)}(z) = z \). ### Research Methods The paper proves the main conclusion through the following steps: 1. **Lemmas and Preliminaries**: The paper first reviews some basic properties of Anosov diffeomorphisms, including the hyperbolicity of Anosov systems, the shadowing property, and Livšic's theorem, etc. 2. **Proof of the Main Theorem**: By constructing specific periodic pseudo - orbits and using the shadowing property of Anosov systems, it is proved that under the given conditions, the set of Birkhoff sums is dense in the set of real numbers. Specifically, the paper is divided into several lemmas, which respectively deal with the distribution properties of Birkhoff sums in different situations, and finally prove the main conclusion. ### Applications and Significance The results of this paper are of great significance for understanding the dynamic behavior of Anosov systems. In particular, it reveals the distribution characteristics of Birkhoff sums on periodic orbits.
