Abstract:We study the degenerate linear Boltzmann equation inside a bounded domain with the Maxwell and the Cercignani-Lampis boundary conditions, two generalizations of the diffuse reflection, with variable temperature. Our abstract collisional setting includes the relaxation towards a space-dependent steady state, and the case where the collision kernel has heavy tails. For both boundary conditions, we prove for the first time the existence of a steady state and a rate of convergence towards it without assumptions on the temperature variations. Our results for the Cercignani-Lampis boundary condition make also no hypotheses on the accommodation coefficients. The proven rate is exponential when a control condition on the degeneracy of the collision operator is satisfied, and only polynomial when this assumption is not met, in line with our previous results regarding the free-transport equation. We also provide a precise description of the different convergence rates, including lower bounds, when the steady state is bounded. Our method yields constructive constants.

Abstract:We develop efficient asymptotic-preserving time discretization schemes to solve the disparate mass kinetic system of a binary gas or plasma in the "relaxation time scale" relevant to the epochal relaxation phenomenon. Since the resulting model is associated to a parameter given by the square of the mass ratio between the light and heavy particles, we develop an asymptotic-preserving scheme in a novel decomposition strategy using the penalization method for multiscale collisional kinetic equations. Both the Boltzmann and Fokker-Planck-Landau (FPL) binary collision operators will be considered. Other than utilizing several AP strategies for single-species binary kinetic equations, we also introduce a novel splitting and a carefully designed explicit-implicit approximation, which are guided by the asymptotic analysis of the system. We also conduct asymptotic-preserving analysis for the time discretization, for both space homogenous and inhomogeneous systems.

Abstract:In [L. Liu and S. Jin, Multiscale Model. Simult., 16, 1085-1114, 2018], spectral convergence and long-time decay of the numerical solution towards the global equilibrium of the stochastic Galerkin approximation for the Boltzmann equation with random inputs in the initial data and collision kernel for hard potentials and Maxwellian molecules under Grad's angular cutoff were established using the hypocoercive properties of the collisional kinetic model. One assumption for the random perturbation of the collision kernel is that the perturbation is in the order of the Knudsen number, which can be very small in the fluid dynamical regime. In this article, we remove this smallness assumption, and establish the same results but now for random perturbations of the collision kernel that can be of order one. The new analysis relies on the establishment of a spectral gap for the numerical collision operator.

Abstract:In this paper, we first extend the micro–macro decomposition method for multiscale kinetic equations from the BGK model to general collisional kinetic equations, including the Boltzmann and the Fokker–Planck Landau equations. The main idea is to use a relation between the (numerically stiff) linearized collision operator with the nonlinear quadratic ones, the latter's stiffness can be overcome using the BGK penalization method of Filbet and Jin for the Boltzmann, or the linear Fokker–Planck penalization method of Jin and Yan for the Fokker–Planck Landau equations. Such a scheme allows the computation of multiscale collisional kinetic equations efficiently in all regimes, including the fluid regime in which the fluid dynamic behavior can be correctly computed even without resolving the small Knudsen number. A distinguished feature of these schemes is that although they contain implicit terms, they can be implemented explicitly. These schemes preserve the moments (mass, momentum and energy) exactly thanks to the use of the macroscopic system which is naturally in a conservative form. We further utilize this conservation property for more general kinetic systems, using the Vlasov–Ampère and Vlasov–Ampère–Boltzmann systems as examples. The main idea is to evolve both the kinetic equation for the probability density distribution and the moment system, the later naturally induces a scheme that conserves exactly the moments numerically if they are physically conserved.

Abstract:We give quantitative estimates on the asymptotics of the linearized Boltzmann collision operator and its associated equation from angular cutoff to non cutoff. On one hand, the results disclose the link between the hyperbolic property resulting from the Grad's cutoff assumption and the smoothing property due to the long-range interaction. On the other hand, with the help of the localization techniques in the phase space, we observe some new phenomenon in the asymptotic limit process. As a consequence, we give the affirmative answer to the question that there is no jump for the property that the collision operator with cutoff does not have the spectrum gap but the operator without cutoff does have for the moderate soft potentials.

The Cauchy problem for Boltzmann bi-linear systems: The mixing of monatomic and polyatomic gases

Abstract:From a unified vision of vector valued solutions in weighted Banach spaces, this manuscript establishes the existence and uniqueness for space homogeneous Boltzmann bi-linear systems with conservative collisional forms arising in complex gas dynamical structures. This broader vision is directly applied to dilute multi-component gas mixtures composed of both monatomic and polyatomic gases. Such models can be viewed as extensions of scalar Boltzmann binary elastic flows, as much as monatomic gas mixtures with disparate masses and single polyatomic gases, providing a unify approach for vector valued solutions in weighted vector Banach spaces. Novel aspects of this work include developing the extension of a general ODE theory in vector valued weighted Banach spaces, precise lower bounds for the collision frequency in terms of the weighted Banach norm, energy identities and the consequently angular or compact manifold averaging lemmas which provide coerciveness resulting into global in time stability, a new combinatorics estimate for $p$-binomial forms producing sharper estimates for the $k$-moments of bi-linear collisional forms. These techniques enable the Cauchy problem improvement that resolves the model with initial data corresponding to strictly positive and bounded initial vector valued mass and total energy, in addition to only $2^+$ moment determined by the hard potential rates discrepancy, a result comparable in generality to the classical Cauchy theory of the scalar homogeneous Boltzmann equation.

Abstract:The conservative method of calculating the Boltzmann collision integral for simple gases, gas mixtures and gases with rotational degrees of freedom of molecules is presented. In all cases the common approach based on the projection technique of summing up the contributions in the collision integral is used. The method is applied for solving the Boltzmann kinetic equation for two fundamental rarefied gas flow problems: the heat transfer problem and the problem of shock wave structure. A comparison with experimental and numerical data of other authors is reported. It is shown that the considered numerical method allows one to solve the Boltzmann equation for real gases with high accuracy.

Abstract:In the present work, we consider the asymptotic problem of the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation when almost all collisions are grazing, that is, the deviation angle θ of the collision is limited near zero (i.e., θ≤ϵ ). We show that by taking the proper scaling to the cross-section which was used in [ 37 ], that is, assuming B^ϵ ( v-v_*,σ )=2(1-s)|v-v_*|^γϵ ^-3sin ^-1θ( θ/ϵ) ^-1-2s1_θ≤ϵ, where θ = ⟨θ =υ -υ _*/|υ -υ _*|.σ⟩ , the solution f^ϵ of the Boltzmann equation with initial data f_0 can be globally or locally expanded in some weighted Sobolev space as f^ϵ = f+ O(ϵ ), where the function f is the solution of Landau equation, which is associated with the grazing collisions limit of Boltzmann equation, with the same initial data f_0 . This gives the rigorous justification of the Landau approximation in the spatially homogeneous case. In particular, if taking γ =-3 and s=1-ϵ in the cross-section B^ϵ , we show that the above asymptotic formula still holds and in this case f is the solution of Landau equation with the Coulomb potential. Going further, we revisit the well-posedness problem of the Boltzmann equation in the limiting process. We show there exists a common lifespan such that the uniform estimates of high regularities hold for each solution f^ϵ . Thanks to the weak convergence results on the grazing collisions limit in [ 37 ], in other words, we establish a unified framework to establish the well-posedness results for both Boltzmann and Landau equations.
Collision frequencies across collision regimes in two-component systems

Abstract:Agglomeration is the most important growth process in particle systems but modelling efforts typically assume mono-disperse primary particle distributions for the closure of the collision frequency that determines the growth rates. Real systems such as sooting flames, however, involve poly-disperse primary particle distributions. Also, systems with multiple components, where primary particles are of distinct but different sizes, cannot be treated as mono-disperse. Here, we introduce bi-disperse primary particle distributions and use Langevin dynamics simulations to develop closures for the collision kernels that are applicable over a wide range of agglomerate characteristics. The simulations cover fractal dimensions from 1.4 to 2.2, primary particle diameters from 5 nm to 50 nm, primary particle size ratios from 2 to 10 and agglomerates of up to a size of 200 primary particles with varying particle compositions. The Langevin dynamics simulations cover all collision regimes from ballistic to diffusive and allow to deduce expressions for the respective collision diameters, the hydrodynamic radii and the projected area as functions of particle characteristics. It is shown that existing expressions for the transition regime that were developed for the modelling of the collision kernel of spherical particles continue to hold for collision kernels of agglomerates in two-component systems under the condition that the collision diameters and drag coefficients are modelled accurately. An example 'a posteriori' simulation for a particle size ratio of 6 uses the population balance equation and demonstrates that bi-variate kernels are needed for the accurate prediction of the growth rates. Errors in predicted number density at the end of the simulations are less than 12 % while mono-variate kernels developed for mono-disperse primary particle systems overpredict the growth rate by 46%.

The assumption that the ensemble average of the distribution function is equal to the extremum entropy state, $\langle f \rangle = f_0$ is taken apart and shown to be wrong. An application describes the nonlinear saturation of Jeans' instability, and the gravitational amplification of Poisson noise.

Abstract:Theoretical study of the electron kinetics (i.e., the velocity distribution and the transport parameter) in gases is generally conducted using the electron Boltzmann equation. The year 2022 marked 150 years since the formulation of the Boltzmann equation. Even in the last several decades, the historical progress has been made synchronously with the development of innovative technologies in gaseous electronics and in combination with the appearance of computers with sufficient speed and memory. Electron kinetic theory based on the Boltzmann equation has mostly been developed as the swarm physics in the hydrodynamic regime in the dc and rf electric fields. In particular, the temporal characteristics are understood in terms of the collisional relaxation times between electron and gas molecule. There are two main theoretical approaches based on the Boltzmann equation for finding the velocity distribution. One is the traditional description of the electron kinetics, starting from the Boltzmann statistics in velocity space under a uniform density or a small density gradient of electrons. The other most recent approach is based on the phasespace tracking of the velocity distribution where the electron transport parameter is given by the moment of the electron density distribution in position space. In the present paper, we will explore the historical development of the electron Boltzmann equation with respect to three key items: collision term, solution method, and intrinsic electron transport in a hydrodynamic regime involved as the key elements in the low-temperature collisional plasma. The important topics listed in a table are briefly noted and discussed.

Abstract:We propose an algorithm for calculating matrix elements of the non-linear Boltzmann equation collision integral in isotropic case. These matrix elements are used as starting ones in the recurrence procedure for calculating the matrix elements of the collision integral, which is non-isotropic with respect to velocities, as described in our previous paper. In addition, isotropic matrix elements are of independent interest for the calculation of isotropic relaxation in a number of problems of physical-chemical kinetics. It is shown that the coefficients of the isotropic matrix elements expansion in terms of $ \Omega $ -integrals are connected by recurrence relations that allow us to calculate them sequentially.

Abstract:Under some strong cutoff conditions on collision kernels, global existence, local stability, entropy identity, conservation of energy, and moment production estimates are proven for isotropic solutions of a modified (quantum effect) Boltzmann equation for spatially homogeneous gases of Bose–Einstein particles (BBE). Then applying these results with the biting-weak convergence, some results on the long-time behavior of the conservative isotropic solutions of the BBE equation are obtained, including the velocity concentration at very low temperatures and the tendency toward equilibrium states at very high temperatures.

Abstract:In this work, the use of the Boltzmann collision operator for dissipative quantum transport is analyzed. Its mathematical role on the description of the time-evolution of the density matrix during a collision can be understood as processes of adding and subtracting states. We show that unphysical results can be present in quantum simulations when the old states (that built the density matrix associated to an open system before the collision) are different from the additional states generated by the Boltzmann collision operator. As a consequence of the Fermi Golden rule, the new generated sates are usually eigenstates of the momentum or kinetic energy. Then, the different time-evolutions of old and new states involved in a collision process can originate negative values of the charge density, even longer after the collision. This unphysical feature disappears when the Boltzmann collision operator generates states that were already present in the density matrix of the quantum system before the collision. Following these ideas, in this paper, we introduce an algorithm that models phonon-electron interactions through the Boltzmann collision operator without negative values of the charge density. The model only requires the exact knowledge, at all times, of the states that build the density matrix of the open system.
Modelling stochastic fluctuations in relativistic kinetic theory

Abstract:Using the information current, we develop a Lorentz-covariant framework for modeling equilibrium fluctuations in relativistic kinetic theory in the grand-canonical ensemble. The resulting stochastic theory is proven to be causal and covariantly stable, and its predictions do not depend on the choice of spacetime foliation used to define the grand-canonical probabilities. As expected, in a box containing $N{>}5$ particles, Boltzmann's molecular chaos postulate is broken with (almost exact) probability $N^{-1/2}$, leading to a breakdown of the Boltzmann equation in small systems. We also verify that, in ultrarelativistic gases, transient hydrodynamics already accounts for at least 80% of the equilibrium fluctuations of the stress-energy tensor at a given time. Finally, we compute the correlators at non-equal times for two selected collision kernels: That of a chemically active diluted solution, and that of ultrarelativistic scalar particles self-interacting via a quartic potential. For the former, we compute the density-density correlators analytically in real space, and dehydrodynamization of the stochastic theory is proven to occur whenever the mean free path diverges at high energy.

Abstract:It is shown that early suggested derivation of the Boltzmann kinetic equation for dilute hard sphere gas from the time-reversible BBGKY equations is incorrect since in fact a priori substitutes for them definite irreversible equations. Alternative approach to analysis of the hard sphere gas is formulated which conserves the reversibility and makes it clear that at any gas density one can reduce the BBGKY equations to the Boltzmann equation only in case of spatially uniform gas.

Abstract:The linearized Boltzmann collision operator appears in many important applications of the Boltzmann equation. Therefore, knowing its main properties is of great interest. This work extends some classical results for the linearized Boltzmann collision operator for monatomic single species to the case of polyatomic single species, while also reviewing corresponding results for multicomponent mixtures of monatomic species. The polyatomicity is modeled by a discrete internal energy variable, that can take a finite number of (given) different values. Results concerning the linearized Boltzmann collision operator being a nonnegative symmetric operator with a finite-dimensional kernel are reviewed.
