Abstract:We start by remarks on the scientific and societal context of today's theoretical physics. Major classes of models for physics to be explored at the LHC are then reviewed. This leads us to propose an LHC timeline and a list of potential effects on theoretical physics and the society. We then explore three conceptual questions connected with the LHC physics: symmetry (and symmetry breaking), effective field theory, and fine tuning.

Abstract:In the first part of the paper, I give a low-resolution overview of the current state of particle physics - the triumph of the Standard Model and its discontents. I review and re-endorse the remarkably direct and (to me) compelling argument that existing data, properly interpreted, point toward a unified theory of fundamental particle interactions and toward low-energy supersymmetry as the near-term future of high energy physics as a natural science. I then attempt, as requested, some more "visionary" - i.e. even lower resolution - comments about the farther future. In that spirit, I emphasize the continuing importance of condensed matter physics as a source of inspiration and potential application, in particular for expansion of symmetry concepts, and of cosmology as a source of problems, applications, and perhaps ultimately limitations.

Abstract:The status of the Standard Model (SM) is reviewed. We emphazize the fact that in spite of the success of the SM for the descrition of the fermionic sector, the status of the bosonic sector (gauge and scalar) suffers from many theoretical deficiencies and from the lack of empirical support. This situation, which leaves room for several types of extensions or alternatives to SM, strongly motivates the pursue of intense efforts for finding hints of New Physics (NP) effects. We present a phenomenological description valid for energies lying below the NP scale. We discuss the indirect constraints established from high precision tests at LEP1, as well as the direct tests that could be performed at future machines

Abstract:We are emerging from a period of consolidation in particle physics. Its great, historic achievement was to establish the Theory of Matter. This Theory will serve as our description of ordinary matter under ordinary conditions – allowing for an extremely liberal definition of “ordinary” – for the foreseeable future. Yet there are many indications, ranging from the numerical to the semi-mystical, that a new fertile period lies before us. We will discover compelling evidence for the unification of fundamental forces and for new quantum dimensions (low-energy supersymmetry). We will identify new forms of matter, which dominate the mass density of the Universe. We will achieve much better fundamental understanding of the behavior of matter in extreme astrophysical and cosmological environments. Lying beyond these expectations, we can identify deep questions that seem to call for ideas outside our present grasp. And there’s still plenty of room for surprises.

Abstract:In the absence of empirical confirmation, scientists may judge a theory's chances of being viable based on a wide range of arguments. The paper argues that such arguments can differ substantially with regard to their structural similarly to empirical confirmation. Arguments that resemble empirical confirmation in a number of crucial respects provide a better basis for reliable judgement and can, in a Bayesian sense, amount to significant \textit{non-empirical} confirmation. It is shown that three kinds of non-empirical confirmation that have been specified in earlier work do satisfy those conditions.

Abstract:I present a point of view about what M Theory is and how it is related to the real world, which departs in certain crucial respects from conventional wisdom. I argue against the possibility of a background independent formulation of the theory, or of a Poincare invariant, Supersymmetry violating vacuum state. A fundamental assumption is black hole dominance of high energy physics. Much of this paper is a compilation of things I have said elsewhere. I review a crude argument for the critical exponent connecting the gravitino mass and the cosmological constant, and propose a framework for finding a quantum theory of de Sitter space.

Abstract:Soon, new experiments at FNAL and J-PARC will measure the muon anomalous magnetic moments with better accuracy than before. From theoretical side, the uncertainty of the standard model prediction is dominated by the hadronic contributions. Abstract:Isaac Newton's book 'Opticks' from the 18th century includes several hypotheses on the structure of matter. Most of the hypotheses were confirmed during the 19th and 20th centuries at the scale of atoms and molecules. Conflicts appear however with today's Standard Model of particle physics. The confirmations at atomic and molecular levels, and the conflicts at the subatomic level, are described and discussed here. Various precursors to the Standard Model for which the conflicts are less severe are also described. These date back to Yukawa's meson model of 1935, and they are subject to other uncertainties. Observations with electron-proton colliders that are under consideration by CERN could clarify the situation.

Abstract:This is the first of a series of papers that we intend to publish about the epistemology of fundamental physics in its current state. One of the main objectives of these papers is to improve our understanding of fundamental physics (and modern physics in particular) from an epistemological and interpretative perspective (i.e. versus formal perspective). Another main objective is to investigate and assess the merit of searching for a unified physical theory (the so-called ``theory of everything'') considering the fact that contemporary physics is a collection of theories created and developed by different individuals and groups of scientists in different eras of history reflecting different levels of scientific, philosophical and epistemological development and dealing with largely separate physical phenomena and hence such unification may mean ``stitching together'' an inhomogeneous collection of theoretical structures which may be clumsy (if not impossible) at least from an epistemological viewpoint.

Abstract:I give my perspective on promising directions for high energy physics in coming years. 1 The Standard Model: Glory and Discontents 1. Our standard model, or core theory, understood to consist of the SU(3)×SU(2)×U(1) gauge theory of strong and electroweak interactions, together with minimally coupled Einstein gravity – the gauge theory of local Lorentz invariance – is a glorious achievement. It provides a firm foundation for chemistry, astrophysics, and all practical forms of engineering. It justifies and fulfills the great reductionist program of understanding the physical world based on precise mathematical understanding of the interactions among a few basic building-blocks. Consider, for example, the direct numerical solution of QCD. Here there are no uncontrolled approximations, no perturbation theory, no cutoff, and no room for fudge-factors. A handful of parameters, inserted into a highly constrained theory of extraordinary symmetry, either will or won’t account for the incredible wealth of measured phenomena in the strong interaction. And it certainly appears that they do. Abstract:This invited summary gives some concluding remarks regarding theoretical aspects of the research presented at Charm2010. I will specialize to the role of theory and the relative reach of theory and experiment in three of the major areas of charm physics address at this conference, specifically 1) charm production, 2) charm weak decays, and 3) charm hadron spectroscopy. After a discussion of the status of progress on representative topics in each of these areas I will conclude with a previously unrelated Feynman story from a conference in the early days of charm.

Abstract:The searches for magnetic monopoles (Ms) is a fascinating interdisciplinary field with implications in fundamental theories, in particle physics, astrophysics, and cosmology. The quantum theory of Ms and its consistency with electrodynamics was derived by Dirac. This marked the start of the searches for classical monopoles at every new accelerator, up to the LHC. Magnetic monopoles are required by Grand Unification Theories, but unlike classical monopoles they would be incredibly massive, out of the reach of any conceivable accelerator. Large efforts have been made to search for them in the cosmic radiation as relic particles from the early Universe in the widest range of mass and velocity experimentally accessible. In this paper the status of the searches for classical Ms at accelerators, for GUT, superheavy Ms in the penetrating cosmic radiation and for Intermediate Mass Ms at high altitudes is discussed, with emphasis on the most recent results and future perspectives.

Abstract:Inspiring ourselves by the assumption that the notion of symmetry itself is insufficient to construct the consistent physics of the Desert (the so-called region of energies beyond the Standard Model) and some additional insights are needed, we suggests that high-energy theories must take into account the higher-order variations of fields. With this in mind we propose the generalization of the concepts of kinetic energy and free particle. It is shown that the theory founded on such principles reveals major features of the genuinely high-energy one, first of all, it appears to be free from ultra-violet divergences, even the self-energy loop terms become finite. Also we discuss other arising interesting phenomena such as the high-gradient currents and charges, unified ``all-in-one'' multi-mass states, VR symmetry, regularization-without-renormalization of SM, etc.
