Abstract:Using a special ansatz for the metric, by straightforward computation we prove that gravi-dilaton effective action in higher dimensions is reduced to the p-brane action. The dual symmetry of the generic type $%a\longleftrightarrow \frac 1a$ is an important symmetry of the reduced action.

Non-relativistic expansion of open strings and D-branes

Abstract:We expand the relativistic open bosonic string in powers of $1/c^2$ where $c$ is the speed of light. We perform this expansion to next-to-leading order in $1/c^2$ and relate our results to known descriptions of non-relativistic open strings obtained by taking limits. Just as for closed strings the non-relativistic expansion is well-defined if the open string winds a circle in the target space. This direction must satisfy Dirichlet boundary conditions. It is shown that the endpoints of the open string behave as Bargmann particles in the non-relativistic regime. These open strings end on nrD$p$-branes with $p\le 24$. When these nrD$p$-branes do not fluctuate they correspond to $(p+1)$-dimensional Newton--Cartan submanifolds of the target space. When we include fluctuations and worldvolume gauge fields their dynamics is described by a non-relativistic version of the DBI action whose form we derive from symmetry considerations. The worldvolume gauge field and scalar field of a nrD$24$-brane make up the field content of Galilean electrodynamics (GED), and the effective theory on the nrD$24$-brane is precisely a non-linear version of GED. We generalise these results to actions for any nrD$p$-brane by demanding that they have the same target space gauge symmetries that the non-relativistic open and closed string actions have. Finally, we show that the nrD$p$-brane action is transverse T-duality covariant. Our results agree with the findings of Gomis, Yan and Yu in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2007.01886" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2007.01886">arXiv:2007.01886</a>.

Abstract:Motivated by the quest to understand the analog of non-geometric flux compactification in the context of M-theory, we study higher dimensional analogs of generalized Poisson sigma models and corresponding dual string and p-brane models. We find that higher generalizations of the algebraic structures due to Dorfman, Roytenberg and Courant play an important role and establish their relation to Nambu-Poisson structures.

Abstract:The usual theory of constrained p-branes is embedded into a larger theory in which there are no constraints. In the latter theory the Fock-Schwinger proper time formalism is extended from point-particles to p-branes, considered as points in an infinite dimensional space M. The quantization appears to be straightforward and elegant. The conventional p-brane states are particular stationary solutions to the functional Schrödinger equation which describes the evolution of a membrane's state with respect to the invariant evolution parameter τ. It is also shown that states of a lower dimensional p-brane can be considered as particular states of a higher dimensional p-brane.

Abstract:The quantization of the tensionless p-brane is discussed. Inspection of the constraint algebra reveals that the central extensions for the p-branes have a simple form. Using a Hamiltonian BRST scheme we find that the quantization is consistent in any space-time dimension while the quantization of the conformal tensionless p-brane gives a critical dimension d = 2.

Abstract:We derive new actions for the bosonic p-brane, super p-brane and the p-brane moving in AdS(dS) space-times using the theory of non-linear realisation without requiring the adoption of any constraints or using superfields. The Goldstone boson associated with the breaking of Lorentz transformations becomes a dynamical field whose equation of motion relates it algebraically to the remaining Goldstone fields.

Abstract:The formation of a confining string (or a p-brane) in a Poincaré invariant theory breaks spontaneously this symmetry which is thereby realized non-linearly in the effective action of these extended objects. As a consequence the form of the action is strongly constrained. A new general method is described to obtain in a systematic way higher order Lorentz invariant contributions to this action. We find a simple recipe to promote a term invariant under the stability subgroup to an expression invariant under the whole Lorentz group. It is based on the following three steps: in the saturation of worldsheet (or worldvolume) indices replace the Minkowski metric with the inverse of the induced metric; in the saturation of indices of the transverse coordinates describing the position of the extended object replace the Euclidean metric with a certain new metric; finally replace the field derivatives of order higher than two with a certain covariant derivative. Lorentz invariance of the expression modified this way immediately follows. We find in particular that the leading bulk deviation of the Nambu Goto action in any space-time dimensions is proportional to the square of scalar curvature.

Abstract:It is described how the Extended Relativity Theory in [Formula: see text]-spaces (Clifford spaces) allows a unified formulation of point particles, strings, membranes and [Formula: see text]-branes, moving in ordinary target spacetime backgrounds, within the description of a single polyparticle moving in [Formula: see text]-spaces. The degrees of freedom of the latter are provided by Clifford polyvector-valued coordinates (antisymmetric tensorial coordinates). A correspondence between the [Formula: see text]-brane ([Formula: see text]-loop) “Schrödinger-like” equations of Ansoldi–Aurilia–Spallucci and the polyparticle wave equation in [Formula: see text]-spaces is found via the polyparticle/[Formula: see text]-brane correspondence. This correspondence might provide another unexplored avenue to quantize [Formula: see text]-branes (a notoriously difficult and unsolved problem) from the more straightforward quantization of the polyparticle in [Formula: see text]-spaces, even in the presence of external interactions. We conclude with comments about the compositeness nature of the polyvector-valued coordinate operators in terms of ordinary [Formula: see text]-brane coordinates via the evaluation of [Formula: see text]-ary commutators.

Abstract:We express the covariant actions of a super p-brane and the corresponding equations of motion, in the flat and curved superspaces, in terms of the Nambu (p+1)-brackets. These brackets make the (p+1)-algebra structure of super p-brane manifest. For the flat superspace, this reconstruction of the action also allows reformulating it in terms of two sets of differential forms.

From Relativistic Gravity to the Poisson Equation

Abstract:We consider the non-relativistic limit of general relativity coupled to a $(p+1)$-form gauge field and a scalar field in arbitrary dimensions and investigate under which conditions this gives rise to a Poisson equation for a Newton potential describing Newton-Cartan gravity outside a massive $p$-dimensional extended object, a so-called $p$-brane. Given our Ansatz, we show that not all the $p$-branes satisfy the required conditions. We study theories whose dynamics is defined by a Lagrangian as well as systems that are defined by a set of equations of motion not related to a Lagrangian. We show that, within the Lagrangian approach, a Poisson equation can be obtained provided that the coupling of the scalar field is fine-tuned such that the non-relativistic Lagrangian is invariant under an emerging local dilatation symmetry. On the other hand, we demonstrate that in the absence of a Lagrangian a Poisson equation can be obtained from a set of equations of motion that is not dilatation invariant. We discuss how our Ansatz could be generalized such as to include more $p$-branes giving rise to a Poisson equation.

Abstract:We generalize the ideas and formalism of two-time physics from particle dynamics to some specific examples of string and p-brane (p≥1) dynamics. The two-time string or p-brane action can be gauge fixed to produce various one-time string or p-brane actions that are dual to each other under gauge transformations. We discuss the particular gauges that correspond to tensionless strings and p-branes in flat (d−1)+1 spacetime, rigid strings and p-branes in flat (d−1)+1 spacetime, and tensionless strings and p-branes propagating in the AdSd−n×Sn backgrounds.

Abstract:The standard extremal p-brane solutions in supergravity are known to allow for a generalisation which consists of adding a linear dependence on the world-volume coordinates to the usual harmonic function. In this note we demonstrate that remarkably this generalisation goes through in exactly the same way for p-branes with fluxes added to it that correspond to fractional p-branes. We relate this to warped orientifold compactifications by trading the Dp-branes for Op-planes that solve the RR tadpole condition. This allows us to interpret the worldvolume dependence as due to lower-dimensional scalars that flow along the massless directions in the no-scale potential. Depending on the details of the fluxes these flows can be supersymmetric domain wall flows. Our solutions provide explicit examples of backreacted orientifold planes in compactifications with non-constant moduli.

Effective Brane Field Theory with Higher-form Symmetry

Abstract:We propose an effective field theory for branes with higher-form symmetry as a generalization of ordinary Landau theory, which is an extension of the previous work by Iqbal and McGreevy for one-dimensional objects to an effective theory for $p$-dimensional objects. In the case of a $p$-form symmetry, the fundamental field $\psi[C_p^{}]$ is a functional of $p$-dimensional closed brane $C_p^{}$ embedded in a spacetime. As a natural generalization of ordinary field theory, we call this theory the brane field theory. In order to construct an action that is invariant under higher-form transformation, we generalize the idea of area derivative for one-dimensional objects to higher-dimensional ones. Following this, we discuss various fundamental properties of the brane field based on the higher-form invariant action. It is shown that the classical solution exhibits the area law in the unbroken phase of $\mathrm{U}(1)$ $p$-form symmetry, while it indicates a constant behavior in the broken phase for the large volume limit of $C_p^{}$. In the latter case, the low-energy effective theory is described by the $p$-form Maxwell theory. We also discuss brane-field theories with a discrete higher-form symmetry and show that the low-energy effective theory becomes a BF-type topological field theory, resulting in topological order. Finally, we present a concrete brane-field model that describes a superconductor from the point of view of higher-form symmetry.
