Abstract:Spectroscopy plays a pivotal role in various applications for industrial and commercial analysis. Conventional spectroscopy instruments include various discrete optical components like light sources, monochromators and detectors. These components are mechanically intricate and require space for the mechanisms that adjust and calibrate them, which increases the instrument’s footprint and make them less adjustable for portable applications. This drawback initiated the increase in the demand for miniatured spectral detection systems. Here, we present a low-cost ultra-compact miniaturized spectral detection system, which integrates both linear variable light sources, sample chambers and detectors within a centimetre-scale chip. The linear variable light generation across wavelengths ranging from 480 nm to 600 nm is achieved by stimulating different regions of the ZnCdSeS bandgap-graded semiconductor nanofilm with ultraviolet light. We demonstrate the capability of the system with precise identification of liquids. Our device overcomes the typical miniaturization limits imposed by discrete optical components, and long light paths in conventional spectroscopy instruments and opens up numerous potential applications across various fields due to its portability, ease of use, and lower cost.

Abstract:Quantum dots (QDs) are a unique class of emitters with size-tunable emission wavelengths, saturated emission colors, near-unity luminance efficiency, inherent photo- and thermal- stability and excellent solution processability. In the past few years, efficiency and lifetime of quantum-dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs) achieved tremendous progress. These encouraging facts foreshadow the commercialization of QLEDs, which promises an unprecedented generation of cost-effective, large-area, energy-saving, wide-color-gamut, ultra-thin and flexible displays. Here we review our activities associated with QLEDs, including exciton-generation mechanisms, material chemistry of charge-transporting layers and device engineering.

Abstract:On-chip micro-spectrometers are sought after with great effort owing to extensive potential applications in mobile optical sensing and imaging. By multiplexing more physical channels, the reconstructive spectrometers based on the spectral-to-spatial mapping technique can improve the spectral range. However, this method is challenging to implement and sustain due to the increase in system complexity and the decrease of dynamic range or spectral resolution. Here, a micro-spectrometer utilizing a single tunable microdisk resonator (MDR) is demonstrated. Such a single MDR spectrometer has only one physical channel to receive all spectral components with a compact size, overcoming the trade-off among spectral resolution, spectral range, and dynamic range. Leveraging the wavelength and temperature-dependent response matrix, unknown spectra are reconstructed from their corresponding output light intensity vector. The fabricated device illustrates a high resolution of 0.01 nm for a dual peak and a medium resolution of 0.2 nm in the 20 nm spectral range. A wide variety of complex input spectra, including narrowband and broadband spectral signals, can be well recovered, exhibiting the robustness of the spectral reconstruction approach. Moreover, this proposed spectrometer exhibits ease of scalability and flexible configuration to a spectrometer array covering a set of desired and even discrete spectral ranges.

Abstract:Dual-emission nanothermometers with the capability of precise measurement combined with high spatial resolution at the micro- and nanoscale could represent a powerful tool in several areas of technology such as microelectronics, microscale optics, photonics, microfluidics, and biomedical engineering. However, most such nanothermometers reported so far exhibit two distinct emissions located within the visible spectrum region, which limits their application potential. Here we reported a visible and near-infrared (NIR) dual-emission nanothermometer based on PbS/CdS/CdSe core/barrier/shell quantum dots (QDs). The ratiometric response of the two isolated photoluminescence (PL) peak integrated areas located at around 670 and 910 nm (corresponding to CdSe and PbS in core/barrier/shell structure, respectively) are found to be markedly temperature-dependent in the 180-300 K range with a thermal sensitivity of 1.22% K-1. In addition, the lifetime (PbS and CdSe) and PL peak shifts (PbS) exhibit a linear dependence on temperature. Multiple independent estimates of temperature could facilitate self-calibrations and enhance the accuracy of measurements. Our results evidence the great potential of visible and NIR luminescence nanothermometers based on dual-emission PbS/CdS/CdSe QDs for several technologies.

Abstract:Spectral analysis is an important tool that is widely used in scientific research and industry. Although the performance of benchtop spectrometers is very high, miniaturization and portability are more important indicators in some applications, such as on-site detection and real-time monitoring. Since the 1990s, micro spectrometers have emerged and developed. Meanwhile, with the development of nanotechnology, nanomaterials have been applied in the design of various micro spectrometers in recent years, further reducing the size of the spectrometers. In this paper, we review the research progress of micro spectrometers based on nanomaterials. We also discuss the main limitations and perspectives on micro spectrometers.

Abstract:Spectrometers with ever-smaller footprints are sought after for a wide range of applications in which minimized size and weight are paramount, including emerging in situ characterization techniques. We report on an ultracompact microspectrometer design based on a single compositionally engineered nanowire. This platform is independent of the complex optical components or cavities that tend to constrain further miniaturization of current systems. We show that incident spectra can be computationally reconstructed from the different spectral response functions and measured photocurrents along the length of the nanowire. Our devices are capable of accurate, visible-range monochromatic and broadband light reconstruction, as well as spectral imaging from centimeter-scale focal planes down to lensless, single-cell-scale in situ mapping.

Abstract:Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are fluorescent carbon nanomaterials that have been applied to biology, medicine, and optoelectronics, owing to their significant advantages such as simple synthesis methods, low cost, and widely available sources of raw synthesis materials. This review summarizes CQD preparation methods, which include hydrothermal and microwave-assisted synthesis methods, as well as separation methods such as centrifugation, dialysis, and filtration. Additionally, we review the application of CQDs in the detection of active ingredients, primarily phenolic compounds, in traditional Chinese medicine. We also discuss the quenching mechanism of CQD fluorescence using the active ingredients of traditional Chinese medicine. Limitations such as insufficient test selectivity, weak fluorescence intensity, and an unclear quantitative relationship between preparation methods and properties should be resolved for the efficient use of CQDs to detect active ingredients in Chinese medicine.

Abstract:Silicon quantum dots (Si QDs) are usually smaller than 10 nm. They have drawn much attention from researchers because of their novel electronic and optical properties caused by quantum confinement effect and surface effect, which are different from those of bulk silicon materials. In recent years, Si QDs have been applied in the field of optoelectronics because of their novel electronic and optical properties, and a series of research progress have been achieved. The electronic and optical properties of Si QDs are overviewed. The use of Si QDs in optoelectronic devices such as light-emitting diodes, solar cells and photodetectors is introduced in detail. The performance of different types of Si QDs in optoelectronic devices is analyzed as well. It is believed that if continuous efforts in the research on Si QDs are made, Si QDs will play a crucial role in the innovation of optoelectronic devices in the future.

Abstract:Miniaturized spectrometry system is playing an essential role for materials analysis in the development of in-situ or portable sensing platforms across research and industry. However, there unavoidably exists trade-offs between the resolution and operation bandwidth as the device scale down. Here, we report an extreme miniaturized computational photonic molecule (PM) spectrometer utilizing the diverse spectral characteristics and mode-hybridization effect of split eigenfrequencies and super-modes, which effectively eliminates the inherent periodicity and expands operation bandwidth with ultra-high spectral resolution. These results of dynamic control of the frequency, amplitude, and phase of photons in the photonic multi-atomic systems, pave the way to the development of benchtop sensing platforms for applications previously unfeasible due to resolution-bandwidth-footprint limitations, such as in gas sensing or nanoscale biomedical sensing.

Abstract:The acquisition of near‐infrared (NIR) spectral information is most notably accessed in the scientific analysis and industrial technology. With the development of artificial intelligence technology, miniature NIR spectrometers are usually required to realize compact equipment. Quantum dot spectrometer is demonstrated to be a promising reconstructive spectrometer; however, the spectral range is limited in the visible range due to the lack of high‐resolution NIR detectors and quantum dot filters. In this work, a NIR quantum dot spectrometer is constructed by integrating 195 finely spectra‐tunable PbS and PbSe based NIR quantum dots as filters and a NIR complementary metal‐oxide semiconductor as detector. The spectra‐tunable PbS and PbSe quantum dots are achieved by controlling the key parameters of colloidal synthesis, ligand exchange, and cation exchange. Combined with the compressive‐sensing based total‐variation algorithm, the NIR quantum dot spectrometer reaches an average spectral resolution of 6 nm in the wide spectral range of 900–1700 nm, showing the bright prospect in developing compact NIR spectrometer for artificial intelligence technology.

Abstract:Monolithic spectrometer is exceptionally attractive to enable compact, low-cost spectroscopy for portable sensing and lab-on-a-chip functionality. Unfortunately, simple down-scaling of the microspectrometer size to the chip-scale severely weakens light-matter interactions and degrades the sensor performance to unacceptable level. Unlike other state-of-the-art miniature spectral splitting filters or photonic structures, bandgap-graded nanowire strongly enhances the light-matter interaction, which is a highly demanded yet unfulfilled feature for high-precision on-chip sensing. Here, on-chip measurement of photoluminescence by a monolithic spectrometer made of a single composition-graded CdSxSe1-x nanowire is reported. The nanowire is engineered to a waveguide-mode-operated, dispersive photodiode array. It works as a monolithic spectrometer chip with strong light-matter interaction and superior noise figure. On-chip measurement of single-point photoluminescence signals with 10(13) Jones room-temperature detectivity and 5 nm spectral resolution is illustrated. This demonstration of a compact, low-cost, and high-performance miniature spectrometer marks a major step towards on-chip spectroscopy for fine resolution and sensitive detection.

Abstract:Miniaturized spectrometers hold great promise for in situ, in vitro, and even in vivo sensing applications. However, their size reduction imposes vital performance constraints in meeting the rigorous demands of spectroscopy, including fine resolution, high accuracy, and ultra-wide observation window. The prevailing view in the community holds that miniaturized spectrometers are most suitable for the coarse identification of signature peaks. In this paper, we present an integrated reconstructive spectrometer that enables near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopic metrology, and demonstrate a fully packaged sensor with auxiliary electronics. Such a sensor operates over a 520 nm bandwidth together with a resolution of less than 8 pm, which translates into a record-breaking bandwidth-to-resolution ratio of over 65,000. The classification of different types of solid substances and the concentration measurement of aqueous and organic solutions are performed, all achieving approximately 100% accuracy. Notably, the detection limit of our sensor matches that of the commercial benchtop counterparts, which is as low as 0.1% (i.e. 100 mg/dL) for identifying the concentration of glucose solution.
