Abstract:A multi-junction thermophotovoltaic system based on near-field radiation and hyperbolic metamaterial was developed. The multilayer near-field system is studied through the fluctuational electrodynamics based on dyadic Green's function and a recursive calculation model, whereas the external quantum efficiency, open-circuit voltage and fill factor are considered to evaluate the performance of the photovoltaic cell. The system expands the available spectrum to 1720-3650 nm so that more photons can be recovered. The near-field radiative transfer is further improved owing to the infinite wavevector in the hyperbolic metamaterial. The results demonstrate that the multi-junction system generates 4.7236 x 10(6) W/m(2) of electricity with a conversion efficiency of 45.26%, achieving 1.3 times (2.38 times) more electricity with 15.3% (25.95%) higher conversion efficiency than the single InGaAsSb (InAs) cell. The study further improves the performance of the multi-junction thermophotovoltaic and paves the way to design a more efficient near-field multi-junction thermophotovoltaic system.
Enhancing efficiency and power of quantum-dots resonant tunneling thermoelectrics in three-terminal geometry by cooperative effects

Abstract:We propose a scheme of multilayer thermoelectric engine where {\em one} electric current is coupled to {\em two} temperature gradients in three-terminal geometry. This is realized by resonant tunneling through quantum dots embedded in two thermal and electrical resisting polymer matrix layers between highly conducting semiconductor layers. There are two thermoelectric effects, one of which is pertaining to inelastic transport processes (if energies of quantum dots in the two layers are different) while the other exists also for elastic transport processes. {These two correspond to the transverse and longitudinal thermoelectric effects respectively and are associated with different temperature gradients.} We show that cooperation between the two thermoelectric effects leads to markedly improved figure of merit and power factor {which is confirmed by numerical calculation using material parameters. Such enhancement is robust against phonon heat conduction and energy level broadening. Therefore we demonstrated cooperative effect as an additional way to effectively improve performance of thermoelectrics in three-terminal geometry.

Abstract:Rectification of thermal fluctuations in mesoscopic conductors is the key idea of today's attempts to build nanoscale thermoelectric energy harvesters in order to convert heat into a useful electric power. So far, most concepts make use of the Seebeck effect in a two-terminal geometry where heat and charge are both carried by the same particles. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the working principle of a new kind of energy harvester, proposed recently using two capacitively coupled quantum dots. We show that due to its novel three-terminal design which spatially separates the heat reservoir from the conductor circuit, the directions of charge and heat flow become decoupled in our device. This enables us to manipulate the direction of the generated charge current by means of external gate voltages while leaving the direction of heat flow unaffected. Our results pave the way for a new generation of multi-terminal, highly efficient nanoscale heat engines.

Abstract:In this study, a novel near-field thermophotovoltaic (NFTPV) and thermoelectric (TE) hybrid system is proposed to achieve efficient energy cascade conversion, where TE is used to harvest the thermal energy discharged by NFTPV. Based on the physical model, the performance of the hybrid system with tungsten emitter and InAs cell is analyzed and optimized through numerical simulation. The effect of operating parameters such as emitter and cell temperature, applied voltage of TPV cell and vacuum gap on the performance of hybrid system is investigated. The results indicate that the NFTPV-TE hybrid system has significant advantages over single NFTPV system. When the emitter temperature is 1000 K, the efficiency of the NFTPV-TE hybrid system is about 3.5-9.5 percent points higher than that of single NFTPV, and the optimal system power increases by 6-16%. Each parameter of NFTPV-TE hybrid system has its optimal range, which can ensure the high efficiency and output power of the system simultaneously. The NFTPV-TE hybrid system is not suitable for the waste heat recovery under low-temperature conditions. However, it is very suitable for the application of NFTPV-TE in solar energy conversion since the optimized cell temperature is low. NFTPV-TE hybrid system can overcome the limitation of single NFTPV efficiency under high-temperature combustion conditions. The efficiency of the hybrid system can reach 45.8% when the emitter temperature is 2000 K, which is 6 percentage points higher than that of single NFTPV system. This study indicates the significant value of NFTPV-TE hybrid system in high-temperature engineering and provides guidance for the practical application of NFTPV system.

Abstract:Cyclical heat engines are a paradigm of classical thermodynamics, but are impractical for miniaturization because they rely on moving parts. A more recent concept is particle-exchange (PE) heat engines, which uses energy filtering to control a thermally driven particle flow between two heat reservoirs1,2. As they do not require moving parts and can be realized in solid-state materials, they are suitable for low-power applications and miniaturization. It was predicted that PE engines could reach the same thermodynamically ideal efficiency limits as those accessible to cyclical engines3–6, but this prediction has not been verified experimentally. Here, we demonstrate a PE heat engine based on a quantum dot (QD) embedded into a semiconductor nanowire. We directly measure the engine’s steady-state electric power output and combine it with the calculated electronic heat flow to determine the electronic efficiency η. We find that at the maximum power conditions, η is in agreement with the Curzon–Ahlborn efficiency6–9 and that the overall maximum η is in excess of 70% of the Carnot efficiency while maintaining a finite power output. Our results demonstrate that thermoelectric power conversion can, in principle, be achieved close to the thermodynamic limits, with direct relevance for future hot-carrier photovoltaics10, on-chip coolers or energy harvesters for quantum technologies.

Abstract:We review recent theoretical work on thermoelectric energy harvesting in multi-terminal quantum-dot setups. We first discuss several examples of nanoscale heat engines based on Coulomb-coupled conductors. In particular, we focus on quantum dots in the Coulomb-blockade regime, chaotic cavities and resonant tunneling through quantum dots and wells. We then turn towards quantum-dot heat engines that are driven by bosonic degrees of freedom such as phonons, magnons and microwave photons. These systems provide interesting connections to spin caloritronics and circuit quantum electrodynamics.

Abstract:The design of a mesoscopic self-oscillating heat engine that works thanks to purely quantum effects is presented. The proposed scheme is amenable to experimental implementation with current state-of-the-art nanotechnology and materials. One of the main features of the structure is its versatility: The engine can deliver work to a generic load without galvanic contact. This makes it a promising building block for low-temperature on-chip energy management applications. The heat engine consists of a circuit featuring a thermoelectric element based on a ferromagnetic insulator-superconductor tunnel junction and a Josephson weak link that realizes a purely quantum DC/AC converter. This enables contactless transfer of work to the load (a generic RL circuit). The performance of the heat engine is investigated as a function of the thermal gradient applied to the thermoelectric junction. Power up to $1$ pW can be delivered to a load $R_L=10\ \Omega$.

Abstract:The quest for good thermoelectric materials and/or high-efficiency thermoelectric devices is of primary importance from theoretical and practical points of view. Low-dimensional structures with quantum dots or molecules are promising candidates to achieve the goal. Interactions between electrons, far-from-equilibrium conditions and strongly non-linear transport are important factors affecting the usefulness of the devices. This paper analyses the thermoelectric power of a two-terminal quantum dot under large thermal $\Delta T$ and voltage $V$ biases as well as the performance of the three-terminal system as a heat engine. To properly characterise the non-linear effects under these conditions, two different Seebeck coefficients are introduced, generalizing the linear response expression. The direct calculations of thermally induced electric and heat currents show, in agreement with recent work, that the efficiency of the thermoelectric heat engine as measured by the delivered power is maximal far from equilibrium. Moreover, the strong Coulomb interactions between electrons on the quantum dot are found to diminish the efficiency at maximum power and the maximal value of the delivered power, both in the Kondo regime and outside of it.

Abstract:This article proposes a new energy harvesting concept that greatly enhances thermionic power generation with high e ciency by exploiting the near- field enhancement of thermal radiation. The proposed near-field enhanced thermionic energy conversion (NETEC) system is uniquely configured with a low-bandgap semiconductor cathode separated from a thermal emitter with a subwavelength gap distance, such that a significant amount of electrons can be photoexcited by near-field thermal radiation to contribute to the enhancement of thermionic current density. We theoretically demonstrate that the NETEC system can generate electric power at a significantly lower temperature than the standard thermionic generator, and the energy conver- sion e ciency can exceed 40%. The obtained results reveal that near-field photoexcitation can enhance the thermionic power output by more than 10 times, making this hybrid system attractive for renewable energy recycling.

Abstract:We establish a theory of optimal efficiency and power for three-terminal thermoelectric engines which have two independent output electric currents and one input heat current. This set-up goes beyond the conventional heat engines with only one output electric current. For such a set-up, we derive the optimal efficiency and power and their trade-off for three-terminal heat engines with and without time-reversal symmetry. The formalism goes beyond the known optimal efficiency and power for systems with or without time-reversal symmetry, showing interesting features that have not been revealed before. A concrete example of quantum-dot heat engine is studied to show that the current set-up can have much improved efficiency and power compared with previous set-ups with only one output electric current. Our analytical results also apply for thermoelectric heat engines with multiple output electric currents, providing an alternative scheme toward future high-performance thermoelectric materials.

Abstract:Charge and heat transport in nano-structures is dominated by non-equilibrium effects which strongly influence their behaviour. These effects are studied in a setup consisting of three external leads, one of which is considered as a heat reservoir and is tunnel-coupled to two cold electrodes via two independently controlled quantum dots. The energy flow from the hot electrode together with energy filtering provided by quantum dots leads to a voltage bias between the cold electrodes. The heat and charge currents in the device effectively flow in mutually perpendicular directions, allowing for their independent control. The non-equilibrium screening changes the values of the system parameters needed for its optimal performance but leaves the maximal output power and efficiency unchanged. Our results are important from the theoretical point of view as well as for the practical implementation and the control of the proposed heat engine.

Abstract:<h2>Abstract</h2>Solid-state heat-to-electrical power converters are thermodynamic engines that use fundamental particles, such as electrons or photons, as working fluids. Virtually all commercially available devices are thermoelectric generators, in which electrons flow through a solid driven by a temperature difference. Thermophotovoltaics and thermionics are highly efficient alternatives relying on the direct emission of photons and electrons. However, the low energy flux carried by the emitted particles significantly limits their generated electrical power density potential. Creating nanoscale vacuum gaps between the emitter and the receiver in thermionic and thermophotovoltaic devices enables a significant enhancement of the electron and photon energy fluxes, respectively, which in turn results in an increase of the generated electrical power density. Here we propose a thermionic-enhanced near-field thermophotovoltaic device that exploits the simultaneous emission of photons and electrons through nanoscale vacuum gaps. We present the theoretical analysis of a device in which photons and electrons travel from a hot LaB6-coated tungsten emitter to a closely spaced BaF2-coated InGaAs photovoltaic cell. Photon tunnelling and space charge removal across the nanoscale vacuum gap produce a drastic increase in flux of electrons and photons, and subsequently, of the generated electrical power density. We show that conversion efficiencies and electrical power densities of ∼ 30% and ∼ 70 W/cm2 are achievable at 2000 K for a practicable gap distance of 100 nm, and thus greatly enhance the performances of stand-alone near-field thermophotovoltaic devices (∼10% and ∼10 W/cm2). A key practical advantage of this nanoscale energy conversion device is the use of grid-less cell designs, eliminating the issue of series resistance and shadowing losses, which are unavoidable in conventional near-field thermophotovoltaic devices.

Three-terminal heat engine and refrigerator based on superlattices

Abstract:We propose a three terminal heat engine based on semiconductor superlattices for energy harvesting. The periodicity of the superlattice structure creates an energy miniband, giving an energy window for allowed electron transport. We find that this device delivers a large power, nearly twice than the heat engine based on quantum wells, with a small reduction of efficiency. This engine also works as a refrigerator in a different regime of the system's parameters. The thermoelectric performance of the refrigerator is analyzed, including the cooling power and coefficient of performance in the optimized condition. We also calculate phonon heat current through the system, and explore the reduction of phonon heat current compared to the bulk material. The direct phonon heat current is negligible at low temperatures, but dominates over the electronic at room temperature and we discuss ways to reduce it.

Abstract:The energy transferred via thermal radiation between two surfaces separated by nanometers distances (near-field) can be much larger than the blackbody limit. However, realizing a reconfigurable platform that utilizes this energy exchange mechanism to generate electricity in industrial and space applications on-demand, remains a challenge. The challenge lies in designing a platform that can separate two surfaces by a small and tunable gap while simultaneously maintaining a large temperature differential. Here, we present a fully integrated, reconfigurable and scalable platform operating in near-field regime that performs controlled heat extraction and energy recycling. Our platform relies on an integrated nano-electromechanical system (NEMS) that enables precise positioning of a large area thermal emitter within nanometers distances from a room-temperature germanium photodetector to form a thermo-photovoltaic (TPV) cell. We show over an order of magnitude higher power generation $\mathrm{P_{gen} \sim 1.25 \, \mu W \cdot cm^{-2}}$ from our TPV cell by tuning the gap between a hot emitter ($\mathrm{T_E \sim 880 \, K}$) and the cold photodetector ($\mathrm{T_D \sim 300 \, K}$) from $\mathrm{\sim 500 \, nm}$ to $\mathrm{\sim 100 \, nm}$. The significant enhancement in $\mathrm{P_{gen}}$ at such small distances is a clear indication of near-field heat transfer effect. Our electrostatically controlled NEMS switch consumes negligible tuning power ($\mathrm{P_{gen}/P_{NEMS} \sim 10^4}$) and relies on conventional silicon-based process technologies.

InAs three quantum dots as working substance for quantum heat engine

Abstract:Heat engines are considered a valuable resource for modern society. The development of these systems leads to the production of heat engines with high efficiency despite their small size, called quantum heat engines. Among these, the quantum Otto cycle which is considered a fundamental thermodynamic cycle in classical heat engines, has also found applications in the realm of quantum heat engines. In this paper, we consider three InAs quantum dots as a working substance, which allows the engine to operate at very small scales, in the presence of an electric field, and the Forster mechanism, which describes the transfer of energy between quantum dots and affects thus the engine's behavior. In this regard, we study the behavior of the work performed by the engine and the entanglement in the system as the Forster parameter is varied. We find that the work performed by the engine is affected by the Forster interaction and the electric field and that the entanglement in the system also changed as the Forster parameter was changed. Finally, we study the influence of entanglement on the work performed by the engine. We find and discuss the intricate relation between the entanglement and the performance of the engine.

Abstract:A quantum heat engine composed of three coupled quantum dots as the working substance is proposed. Since quantum dots naturally obey the Fermi Hubbard Hamiltonian, the strong coupling interaction regime allows the working substance to be evaluated under an effective Heisenberg Hamiltonian. Indeed, the influence of the strength coupling, between the three dots, on quantum machine efficiency and work in the presence of a homogeneous magnetic field is also examined. Furthermore, the influence of entanglement on the efficiency & work of the quantum dot Otto heat engine is well analyzed. As a tripartite working substance, we are interested in analyzing the local work and efficiency associated with each single and pair of quantum dots. The results show that the local efficiency associated with a pair of quantum dots achieves a maximum value, unlike the global efficiency. Indeed, the entanglement impact on Global/local work is studied.

Abstract:At present, there are various limitations to harvesting ambient waste heat which include the lack of economically viable material and innovative design features that can efficiently recover low grade heat for useful energy conversion. In this work, a thermal nanophotonic-pyroelectric (TNPh-pyro) scheme consisting of a metamaterial multilayer and pyroelectric material, which performs synergistic waste heat rejection and photothermal heat-to-electricity conversion, is presented. Unlike any other pyroelectric configuration, this conceptual design deviates from the conventional by deliberately employing back-reflecting NIR to enable waste heat reutilization/recuperation to enhance pyroelectric generation, avoiding excessive solar heat uptake and also retaining high visual transparency of the device. Passive solar reflective cooling up to 4.1 °C is demonstrated. Meanwhile, the photothermal pyroelectric performance capitalizing on the back-reflecting effect shows an open circuit voltage (Voc) and short circuit current (Isc) enhancement of 152 and 146%, respectively. In addition, the designed photoactive component (TiO2/Cu) within the metamaterial multilayer provides the TNPh-pyro system with an effective air pollutant photodegradation functionality. Finally, proof-of-concept for concurrent photothermal management and enhanced solar pyroelectric generation under a real outdoor environment is demonstrated.

Abstract:We investigate thermoelectric transport through interfaces with inelastic scatterings by developing a quantum theory, which has been extensively validated by existing theories. We find that under temperature bias, while a two-terminal conductor-insulator interface behaves only as a thermal resistor, a three-terminal conductor-insulator-conductor interface can function as an electricity generator caused by phonon-mediated electron scatterings with heat-charge current separation. Unlike conventional thermoelectrics which is a property of a bulk caused by the Seebeck effect, this thermoelectric behavior is a property of an interface driven by electron-phonon scatterings.
