Abstract:Subsea observation networks have been increasingly used to explore oceans. However, the stability of the entire system remains a crucial problem. In 2015, flashover discharge occurred in a transmission line during a sea trial in the South China Sea, thereby resulting in node destruction and serious losses. This study investigates flashover discharge in the transmission line and aims to determine its influences on the nodes. We use a damaged submarine cable to conduct a flashover discharge fault experiment and analyze the causes of this voltage change law. A cascade of lumped parameter model is adopted for the transmission line, and the optimal segment length is confirmed through simulation. Step response is applied to the study of flashover discharge, and the results agree well with the PSpice simulation results. Then, simulations and experiments on flashover discharge are conducted on the basis of the cascade of lumped parameter model. Results show that voltage surge is generated in the output side with the occurrence of flashover discharges, especially when they are continuous. An effective method of adding silicon stacks at the converter input and connecting transient voltage suppressor (TVS) in parallel at the output is proposed to suppress this oscillation.

Abstract:Solid-state transformer (SST) based super charge station (SPS) have become an attractive substitute for state-of-the-art charge stations because of their high efficiency, high power density, and convenient maintenance and power expansion However, compared to traditional SPS system which is connected to MV grid with a bulky line frequency transformer, SST is more fragile to failure because that it directly connects to the MV grid. Different kinds of surge events would be seen in the MV grid, among which lightning is one of the most serious scenarios. Therefore, the lightning influence on the Metal Oxide Arrester (MOA) clamped floating SST is modeled and analyzed. The modeling process of such an SST system, including the lightning wave and MOA, is shown. Evaluation results show that voltage stress between phases would hugely increase during the lighting, and this effect can be eliminated by MOA connected between phases.

Abstract:This paper studied the damage characteristics of optical fiber overhead ground wires (OPGWs) under consecutive lightning strikes through artificial lightning experiments, numerical simulations and arc-OPGW interaction analysis. A magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation model for consecutive lightning arcs was developed based on the similitude theory. The spatiotemporally varying thermoelectric fields obtained from arc simulation were applied to OPGWs by a stepwise partitioned loading approach to accomplish the coupled arc-thermal-electric analysis. The numerical model simulating the thermal damage behavior of OPGWs was verified by the high agreement between the simulated damage parameters and the experimental results. Under consecutive lightning strikes A, B and C, the damage volume varies non-monotonically with increasing discharge gap. The damaging effects of components A and B are characterized as slight distortion on the shallow surface of the strands. The strand fracture where severe melting and plastic deformation coexist is governed by the heat flow from the lightning arc of long-duration continuing current. In contrast, the Joule heating effect is negligible. The damaging effect of the lightning component in the successively applied lightning strike sequence is significantly stronger than its effect when applied alone, indicating the necessity of conducting consecutive lightning strike tests for OPGW performance assessment.

Experiment and Simulation of Air Gap Breakdown Characteristics Under Short-tail Impulse Waveform

Abstract:To investigate the overvoltage during direct lightning strike,models on PSCAD/EMTDC platform were designed to simulate the transients during lightning direct strike on transmission tower and impulse voltage waves imposed on insulators According to the simulation results,the actual impulse voltage is not same as standard one.And the differences may cause errors in the evaluation of lightning performance.The breakdown characteristics of air gap under short-tail impulse,which is similar to actual waveform,were experimentally investigated.In the experiment,the impulse wave featured a reduced wave-tail time which was less than 10μs.It would cause equivalent effects to the air-gap with actual lightning strike.The air gap under study was a rod-plane gap with the length ranging from 0.5 ～ 1.4 m.The experimental result indicates that the breakdown voltage of air gap under short tail impulse is significantly higher than that of standard wave,about 40% higher for positive impulses,implying that previously-used methods may yield much lower withstand lightning current and consequently causes an over-investment on insulation.Finally,the parameters of Leader Propagation Model were studied and their effects on the simulation results were illustrated.Experimental data shows that the LPM can be applied to calculate the breakdown characteristics of short-tail waveform with good accuracy,and a set of parameter suitable for short-tail impulse is acquired.
Experimental Study on Location of Lightning Stroke on Opgw by Means of A Distributed Optical Fiber Temperature Sensor

Abstract:An electric anode with high pulsed current and a negative electrode are adopted to form a lightning impulse system with duration time of 200ms for simulation of the lightning stroke process. The lightning stroke on the optical fiber ground wire (OPGW) is considered to be a heat release process at the lightning stroke position, and a distributed optical fiber temperature sensor (DOFTS) is employed to locate the lightning stroke. In the experiment, simulated lightning strokes with the quantity of electric discharge of 100C and 200C are generated respectively, but in the inner part of the OPGW the temperature increase captured by the DOFTS is just several degrees Celsius because of the heat-insulating property of the grease and jelly filled into the OPGW and the limit from spatial resolution of the DOFTS. Experimental results demonstrate that DOFTS has excellent potential for the maintenance of electric power transmission line and it is important to enhance the spatial resolution for further applications of DOFTS in engineering.

Abstract:A new method based on a distributed optical fiber sensor (DOFS) to locate the position of lightning stroke on the optical fiber ground wire (OPGW) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In the method, the lightning stroke process is considered to be a heat release process at the lightning stroke position, so Brillouin optical time domain reflectometry (BOTDR) with spatial resolution of 2m is used as the distributed temperature sensor. To simulate the lightning stroke process, an electric anode with high pulsed current and a negative electrode (the OPGW) are adopted to form a lightning impulse system with duration time of 200ms. In the experiment, lightning strokes with the quantity of electric discharge of 100 Coul and 200 Coul are generated respectively, and the DOFS can sensitively capture the temperature change of the lightning stroke position in the transient electric discharging process. Experimental results show that DOFS is a feasible instrument to locate the lightning stroke on the OPGW and it has excellent potential for the maintenance of electric power transmission line. Additionally, as the range of lightning stroke is usually within 10cm and the spatial resolution of a typical DOFS is beyond 1m, the temperature characteristics in a small area cannot be accurately represented by a DOFS with a large spatial resolution. Therefore, for further application of distributed optical fiber temperature sensors for lightning stroke location on OPGW, such as BOTDR and ROTDR, it is important to enhance the spatial resolution.
Phenomena of Parallel Discharges and Flashovers in Lightning Triggered to Conventional and Non-conventional Lightning Rods

Abstract:Experiments of rocket-triggered lightning to a conventional lightning rod and a non-conventional Semiconductor Lightning Eliminator (SLE) were conducted in summers of 1998 and 1999 in southern China. Totally 16 lightning flashes were triggered and measured successfully. The measurements included photographs, currents and electrical fields. From the 5 lightning flashes triggered in altitude in 1998, it was found that these flashes tended to strike at the 4 m high conventional lightning rod rather than the 6 m high SLE located just 5 m away from the former. From the 11 lightning flashes triggered dedicatedly to the SLE in 1999, it was fund that there were usually a phenomenon of parallel discharges between two or more SLE rods occurring during the developing stage of lightning. In addition, there were always flashovers occurred along the SLE rods struck by lightning. Current measurements on the grounding path of the SLE have been succeeded for only one case out of five struck the SLE, probably due to side-paths caused by flashovers. The peak current measured for that case was about 6.6 kilo-amperes. The results show that the SLE is neither superior to a traditional lightning rod in terms of provision of lightning attachment points and paths for the lightning current to flow into ground, nor capable to eliminate any possibility of lightning. The lightning current-limiting function of the SLE declared by the manufacturer was not confirmed by these experiments.
Induced Overcurrent Characteristics Generated by Close Triggered Lightning on the Overhead Power Line

Abstract:Techniques of artificially-triggered lightning have provided a significantly useful means to directly measure various physical parameters of lightning discharge and to conduct research on protection methods of lightning electromagnetic pulses. In this study, we measured and analyzed the induced overvoltage on the overhead transmission line and the overcurrent through Surge Protective Devices (SPD) when a lightning discharge was artificially triggered nearby on August 12, 2008 at Conghua Field Lightning Experiment Site. We found that overcurrents through SPD were induced on the power line both during the initial continuous current stage and the return stroke processes. During the return strokes, the residual voltage and the current through the SPD lasted up to the ms (millisecond) range, and the overcurrents exhibited a mean waveform up to 22/69µs with a peak value of less than 2kA. The SPD discharge current peak was not synchronous to that of the residual voltage with the former obviously lagging behind the latter. The SPD discharge current peak was well correlated with the triggered lightning current peak and the wave-front current gradient. The long duration of the SPD current is one of the major reasons why the SPD was damaged even with a big nominal discharge current.
Observation and verification of surface electrical explosion driven by radial‐distributed pulsed current in laboratory lightning strike test

Abstract:The laboratory lightning test is essential for assessing the effectiveness of lightning strike protection (LSP). Particularly, direct lightning strike damage can be performed with pulsed current injection into the specimen. This paper focuses on the dynamic process of arc plasma and shock wave behaviour in the vicinity of the 'strike' point. A rod‐plate discharge load is built for testing aluminium and coated plate under 40‐kA‐level pulsed current. The visualisation of the luminous discharge plasma and its flow field via high‐speed photography (from different angles) is meticulously designed and implemented, synchronised with electro‐physical diagnostics. The results indicate some new mechanisms for lightning strike damage, apart from the impulse heat loading from the thermal arc. The transient current injection through the arc root concentrates on a thin skin layer (skin‐depth effect), with the radial‐attenuated current density, driving asynchronously electrical explosions on the plate surface. The inhomogeneous Joule heating of the plate leads to outwardly propagating phase transition and shock wave along the conductive surface. In addition, the electro‐thermal instability is observed and regarded as the seed of irregular erosion region. Spectroscopic information reveals two different plasma states of main discharge arc channel and adjacent surface electrical explosion. The correspondence of the physical mechanism of electrical explosion and optical radiation is established. Microscopic images for different regions depict erosion characteristics and summarise influencing factors, further confirming the mechanism above. The research clarifies the role of skin‐depth effect in transaction arc erosion for electrode, complements the electrical explosion theory with unevenly distributed current and helps optimise strategies of LSP.

Abstract:Lightning strike is one of the main factors affecting power transmission lines and may lead to broken strands and damage of transmission lines, resulting in abnormal power supply. To improve the accuracy of lightning location, this paper presents a polarization optical time-domain reflectometer (POTDR) lightning location method based on orthogonal coding technology. The lightning strike point can be located by detecting the state of polarization (SOP) mutation of Rayleigh backscattering in the POTDR system. The orthogonal coding technology is used to improve the distance and accuracy of POTDR lightning location. Through calculation and simulation analysis, the location accuracy is significantly improved at the same sensing distance compared with the ordinary POTDR lightning location method. The lightning strike location error can be limited to 200 m in 20 km sensing distance which meets the actual engineering needs. The results of this paper are important to improve the operation and maintenance efficiency of transmission lines and reduce maintenance costs in the power industry.

Approaching to Rotated Lightning Strike on Transmission Line

Abstract:Experimental methods and models were analyzed,such as standard method,electrical geometric model(EGM),leader progression model(LPM) and shielding failure probability model.The standard method is easy for satisfactory use in lightning protective shield design for normal lines;electric-geometrical model is rational and easy for analyzing EHV and UHV lines,mountainous lines and multi-circuit lines.The leader progression model and shielding failure probability model give a reasonable interpretation of rotated flashover in physical mean,but they have rather complex calculation procedure and for time being can not be widely used for engineering application at long-distance transmission lines.Detailed discussion was made on relevant parameters of electro-geometrical model,from which the calculation of striking distance and striking distance factor was made using equation recommended by IEEE WG.For regions of mean annual thundery day more than 40,the thundering rate at ground surface can be taken as 0.1 time / km2 thundery day.Based on statistics of thundering number on 35～220 kV in China,the thundering rate for some thunderous regions can be calculated using equation recommended by CIGRE.

Abstract:Acquisition and analysis of the thermal damage and injected energy data of the natural lightning strikes are conducive to understand the lightning-induced damage mechanism of OGW (Overhead Ground Wire) as well as guide the improvement of the lightning simulation experimental methods in the laboratory. In this paper, a rupture accident of OGW in the power grid, which was taken as a natural lightning strike damage experiment, was used to compare the thermal damage and the injected energy with the existing common Joule heat & arc heat transfer model. The results indicated that the thermal damage of the common model is milder than that of natural lighting strike. In this accident, at least more than 45% of the injected natural lightning energy was not sourced when adopting the existing common model to simulate the thermal damage of OGW, even after considering the electrons enthalpy flux that is usually neglected in calculation.

Abstract:Surge response plays a leading role in the transient process caused by lightning stroke to the top of ultra-high transmission tower,so the design of lightning protection for ultra-high transmission tower differs from those for common transmission towers essentially,thus the traditional tower models cannot continue to use in transient characteristic calculation of ultra-high transmission tower as well.In this paper the existing surge impedance models for transmission towers home and abroad are introduced in brief,on this basis the authors propose a new improved surge impedance model for ultra-high transmission tower.Considering the fact that the surge impedances corresponding to different positions of the tower body are not same,the tower body is divided into multi pieces and the surge impedance of each piece is calculated respectively.The result of analysis on transient process of ultra-high transmission tower during lightning stroke shows that the new improved surge impedance model can tally with actual condition better while lightning stroke occurs.By use of the proposed multi-surge impedance model the influences of surge impedance,grounding resistance and overhead grounding wire on lightning stroke caused transient characteristic of ultra-high transmission tower are simulated,and simulation results are available for reference to the design of ultra-high transmission tower.

Abstract:Lightning intrusion wave is a key factor threatening the safe operation of substations. This paper uses electromagnetic transient simulation software to calculate and analyze the overvoltage characteristics and influencing factors of lightning intrusion waves in GIS substations. It studies the effects of lightning current waveform, corona effect, and multiple lightning strikes on the lightning overvoltage. The results show that with the same amplitude of lightning current, the longer the duration and lower the steepness are, the lower the peak and steepness of lightning overvoltage invading the power station will be. As the distance between the lightning strike point and the substation increases, the attenuation effect of corona on lightning overvoltage shows a "not obvious-significant-saturation" pattern. When multiple lightning strikes occur, the peak and steepness of overvoltage caused by the first lightning strike are the highest, and the temperature rise of the lightning arrester varies linearly with the number of lightning strikes.

Abstract:In this paper, a simulation model is proposed to evaluate the electromagnetic transient surge current distribution in a lightning protection system (LPS) due to a direct lightning stroke. The model is based on the coupled transmission line network in the frequency domain combined with the Fourier transform technique. The conductor of the LPS is described using the coupled transmission line model, and can be reduced to an active two-port equivalent circuit. The unknown quantities are the node voltages of the LPS at the physical junction, which leads to a fast solver at each frequency. The validation of the proposed approach is performed by comparing the results with those in the technical literature. The numerical examples show the flexibility, efficiency, and accuracy of the model in the range of practical application of LPS.

Abstract:When overhead lines are impacted by lightning, the traveling wave of the fault contains a wealth of fault information. The accurate extraction of feature quantities from transient components and their classification are fundamental to the identification of lightning faults. The extraction process may involve modal aliasing, optimal wavelet base issues, and inconsistencies between the lightning strike distance and the fault point. These factors have the potential to impact the effectiveness of recognition. This paper presents a method for identifying lightning strike faults by utilizing Kullback–Leibler (KL) divergence enhanced Variational Mode Decomposition (VMD) and Symmetric Geometry Mode Decomposition (SGMD) improved with Permutation Entropy (PE) to address the aforementioned issues. A model of a 220 kV overhead line is constructed using real faults to replicate scenarios of winding strike, counterstrike, and short circuit. The three-phase voltage is chosen and then subjected to Karenbaren decoupling in order to transform it into zero mode, line mode 1, and line mode 2. The zero-mode voltage is decomposed using KL-VMD and PE-SGMD methods, and the lightning identification criteria are developed based on various transient energy ratios. The research findings demonstrate that the criteria effectively differentiate between winding strike, counterstrike, and short-circuit faults, thus confirming the accuracy and efficacy of the lightning fault identification criteria utilizing KL-VMD and PE-SGMD.

Abstract:Techniques of artificially-triggered lightning have provided a significantly useful means to directly measure various physical parameters of lightning discharge and to conduct research on protection methods of lightning electromagnetic pulses.In this study,using capacitive and resistive dividers,current probes and optical fiber transmission devices,we measured and analyzed the induced overvoltage on the overhead transmission line and the overcurrent through Surge Protective Devices（SPD） when a lightning discharge was artificially triggered nearby on August 12,2008 at Conghua Field Lightning Experiment Site.The triggered lightning discharge contained an initial current stage and eight return strokes whose peak currents ranged from 6.6kA to 26.4kA.We found that overcurrents through SPD were induced on the power line both during the initial continuous current stage and the return stroke processes.During the return strokes,the residual voltage and the current through the SPD lasted up to the ms（millisecond） range,and the overcurrents exhibited a mean waveform up to 22/69μs with a peak value of less than 2kA.Based on the observed data,simple calculations show that the corresponding single discharge energy was much greater than the values of the high voltage pulse generators commonly used in the experiments regulated for SPD.The SPD discharge current peak was not synchronous to that of the residual voltage with the former obviously lagging behind the latter.The SPD discharge current peak was well correlated with the triggered lightning current peak and the wave-front current gradient.The long duration of the SPD current is one of the major reasons why the SPD was damaged even with a big nominal discharge current.

Abstract:According to field operation records, lightning stroke accounts for 60% of transmission line failures. Therefore, it is of great significance to strengthen lightning protection of the power system. However, there are several lightning faults, and the corresponding protection methods differ. Consequently, identifying lightning stroke faults will be beneficial to take corresponding lightning protection measures. This paper investigates the mechanism of different lightning strike faults, and simulates them by a 110kV transmission line EMTP-ATP model. Analysis and simulation show that the direction of tower current represents lightning's polarity; the insulator voltage's direction differs when shielding failure or back striking occurs. If insulator flashovers, the voltage of the insulator drops down to zero, and as the transient process comes to an end, the voltage of the insulator on the nearby tower decreases to zero as well; after the occurrence of back striking flashover, the direction of insulator voltage on nearby tower alters. Based on those features, insulator voltage and tower current are introduced as a characteristic signal, and their direction and rms of them are formed as recognition parameters for lightning stroke identification. The EMTP-ATP simulations demonstrate that the proposed method is correct and effective, and the recognition rate of different lightning faults is 100% under the abovementioned method.

Abstract:The ultra-high voltage direct current (UHVDC) power transmission systems usually transmit a capacity of 6-8 GW, their stability and reliability are of vital importance to the large power grid. This paper analyses a mono-pole blocking accident caused by the inaccurate measurement of optical current transformer (OCT) when the pole line of Shaanbei-Wuhan ±800 kV UHVDC transmission system was struck by lightning. Combined with electromagnetic transient simulation of the UHVDC transmission system, digital simulation and in-plant testing of the optical CT, a comprehensive understanding of the factors contributing to the accident is achieved. It reveals that optical CT measurement anomalies were significant contributors to the misoperation of protective relays, which led to the mono-pole blocking accident. Based on the simulations of optical CT under high peak currents and high di/dt conditions caused by lightning strike, the importance of proper setting of demodulation algorithm parameters in optical CT to avoid inaccurate measurements is emphasized. Through in-plant testing and steady state current accuracy verification, the reasonableness of demodulation parameters is verified. Simulation results illustrate the challenges in measuring very fast transient current accurately, which are the premise and guarantee of stable operation of UHVDC transmission systems under lightning strike.
