Abstract:Purpose– This paper aims to address challenges in strategic management and tries to find ways to make a breakthrough. Strategic management theorists and practitioners need new scientific theories. In the modern turbulent environment, the extant strategic management research (SMR) and strategic management theories can neither satisfy the practical needs nor the theoretical developmental needs of strategic management.Design/methodology/approach– The paper uses critique viewpoints that are unfolded according to the logic of how theories will satisfy the practical and theoretical needs. Physics and mathematics are regarded as the most beautiful and perfect scientific research fields, which help predict physical phenomena such as solar eclipse precisely. Therefore, the paper uses physics and mathematics as benchmarks to explore how SMR should make efforts to push the research further.Findings– The paper provides a different viewpoint that will help strategic theorists and practitioners investigate and understand strategic phenomena more holistically. SMR should contribute to strategic theoretical and practical progress and not just to the game of academic game play. For the goal, the paper summarizes and refines the definition of strategic management in an alternative but practical and innovative perspective, and then delineates the criteria for SMR topic choice; identifies the dilemmas and challenges the SMR faces; and points out the new approaches the strategic management researchers should explore.Originality/value– The paper challenges the mainstream of SMR by identifying the shortcomings, dilemmas, and challenges of the current SMR, and then highlights new ways to make breakthrough in SMR. The study will make strategic management scholars rethink their research and do meaningful research from the perspectives of theoretical contribution and practical guidance.

Cash flow theory based on financial market is popular in western financial academia, but it leads to some plights in the theory of corporate finance, such as disconnection of finance and business, disconnection of dynamic and static status. Abstract:PurposeThe critical issue in financial management is investigating the role of government in an organization's economy. Governmental facilities, loans and long-term financial plans may affect the performance of financial management systems. Financial management systems may be affected by various other factors, such as organizational, technological and governmental factors. Studying and investigating the influence of organizational, technological and governmental factors on financial management systems' performance is the primary goal of this paper.Design/methodology/approachFinancial management has always been affected by the increasing role of technology. Also, the use of financial software, the entry of computer-based computing and math planning are examples of technology entry to financial management that has led to changes in recent years. Data were collected from the insurance offices through a questionnaire. Distributed questionnaires were conducted on a Likert scale. The causal model has been appraised by the structural equation modeling (SEM) method that has been utilized to assess the validity and reliability of the model. The software has been used to evaluate the questionnaire, and the hypotheses of the research are evaluated using SPSS 22 and SMART-PLS software.FindingsThe results showed that organizational, technological and governmental factors directly affect financial management systems' performance. For this reason, the role of organizational, technological and governmental factors on the success of financial management systems in insurance companies must be considered for decision-making in the future.Research limitations/implicationsThis study includes some restrictions required to be examined in assessing the outcomes. First, sample research was selected from the managers of the insurance offices in Harbin, China. So, the sample size is not big, and the generalization of the results is limited. Second, the current research might have ignored other variables, which affect the performance of financial management systems. Future researchers intend to investigate the impact of investments and projects on financial management systems' performance as a proposal. Nevertheless, the subsequent investigation can assess vital factors like investments and plans on financial management systems' performance.Practical implicationsThe research also includes insurance companies and all departments and individuals associated with financial management systems somehow.Originality/valueIn the current article, the performance of financial management systems is highlighted, and the method to resolve the issue has been utilized as an experimental example. This article's introduced model supplies a comprehensive framework to investigate the impact of organizational, technological and governmental factors on financial management systems' performance.

Abstract:Every enterprise in modern society has generation of profit as its goal, and its performance can be determined by how effectively and efficiently its current assets are used. The purpose of this study is to identify and systematize modern approaches to financial management of enterprises. The relevance of this work is conditioned by the fact that in the conditions of market relations the approaches to working capital management of an enterprise have changed significantly. The methodological basis of the study is the achievements of economic theory, theory of finance, financial management, financial policy, and economic analysis, accounting and reporting. This research is based on such a methodology as scientific cognition, and also systemic and dialectical approaches. The problem on financial management of enterprises is always associated with a number of conditions or factors that affect the operation of a company. In this regard, the authors consider the research in the field of approaches to managing current assets in modern conditions, which is the most relevant in the current period. At the present stage, in order to ensure the long-term productive and effective financial activity of a company, a company’s working capital management policy is necessary, which would consist in determining the volume and structure of the current assets of the organization, as well as the sources of their coverage and the relationship between them. In this study, the general trends are defined in that the management of enterprise’s finances is reduced to the implementation of general management functions. This expresses a functional approach to the management of a company and implies the continuity and cyclicity of managerial work. Practical results of the work define that an enterprise cannot achieve the maximum effect by managing only accounts receivable, stocks or cash. Only after a comprehensive analysis reviewing each of the components of working capital in the enterprise, the best results of management could be achieved, because they are all interconnected. In this study, we examined the main approaches to the management of working capital of an enterprise; that has revealed that in market conditions an approach is needed on the application of two types of working capital management. This allows financial managers of modern enterprises to implement more informed management decisions (Forfaiting, Just-in-Time Approach, Re-Order Level System), i.e. the choice of one type is not always the right solution in working capital management at an enterprise.
Managing financial risks to improve financial success of public—private partnership projects: a theoretical framework

Abstract:Purpose Successful execution of public–private partnership (PPP) projects is the most desirable outcome to all stakeholders. Previous studies show that one of the topmost obstacles to fulfil this desire on the project is financial risks. Nonetheless, inadequate holistic studies exist on linking the management of this challenge to the financial returns of the project. This study aims to develop a theoretical framework interrelating financial risks, financial controls and financial performance of PPP projects. Design/methodology/approach The theoretical framework is informed and supported by existing theories and previous empirical studies from construction management, finance and economics. The underlying theories captured in the framework were chosen for their relevance and applicability to PPP projects. The propositions developed from the analysis of the theories and the empirical literature are summarised in three main hypotheses and 26 operationalised sub-hypotheses. Findings The major elements of the framework include the financial risks and 12 sub-themes which are commonly experienced on PPP projects. Financial policies and procedures on controlling financial losses of the projects are also included in the framework. Lastly, this study creates financial criteria on the projects which are intrinsically embedded in the framework to serve as benchmark to support the measurement of financial success. Research limitations/implications This study is a theoretical review of classical theories and empirical studies, and therefore, not all researches and managerial controls have not been included in this framework due to restricted time and limited studies on the topic. Practical implications This paper would serve as a multidimensional guide to project managers to mitigate financial risks and hopefully enhance the financial success of PPPs. Theoretically, this paper outlines the dimensions of managing financial risks of PPPs that require valid and reliable measurement to test the interrelationships of the constructs by further studies in the construction research community. Originality/value This theoretical framework makes ambitious efforts to embrace multifaceted theories from different disciplines to shed light on holistic mechanisms to mitigate financial risks to improve financial returns of PPP projects.
