Abstract:Seeded heteroepitaxial growth is a "living" crystallization-driven self-assembly (CDSA) method that has emerged as a promising route to create uniform segmented nanoparticles with diverse core chemistries by using chemically distinct core-forming polymers. Our previous results have demonstrated that crystallization kinetics is a key factor that determines the occurrence of heteroepitaxial growth, but an in-depth understanding of controlling heteroepitaxy from the perspective of crystallization thermodynamics is yet unknown. Herein, we select crystallizable aliphatic polycarbonates (PxCs) with a different number of methylene groups (xCH2, x = 4, 6, 7, 12) in their repeating units as model polymers to explore the effect of lattice match and core compatibility on the seeded growth behavior. Seeded growth of PxCs-containing homopolymer/block copolymer blend unimers from poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) core-forming seed platelet micelles exhibits distinct crystal growth behavior at subambient temperatures, which is governed by the lattice match and core compatibility. A case of seeded growth with better core compatibility and a smaller lattice mismatch follows epitaxial growth, where the newly created crystal domain has the same structural orientation as the original platelet substrate. In contrast, a case of seeded growth with better core compatibility but a larger lattice mismatch shows nonepitaxial growth with less-defined crystal orientations in the platelet plane. Additionally, a case of seeded growth with poor core compatibility and larger lattice mismatch results in polydisperse platelet micelles, whereby crystal formation is not nucleated from the crystalline substrate. These findings reveal important factors that govern the specific crystal growth during a seeded growth approach by using compositionally distinct cores, which would further guide researchers in designing 2D segmented materials via polymer crystallization approaches.

Abstract:Organic micro/nanocrystals based on small organic molecules have drawn extensive attention due to their potential application in organic field-effect transistors, electrochemical sensors, solar cells, etc. Herein, the recent advances for organic micro/nanocrystals from the perspective of molecule aggregation mode, morphology modulation, and optical property modulation are reviewed. The stacking mode and the intermolecular interaction depend on the molecular structure, which eventually determines the morphology of organic micro/nanocrystals. The morphologies of the organic micro/nanocrystals make the aggregates exhibit photon confinement or light-guiding properties as organic miniaturized optoelectronic devices. In this review, we conclude with a summary and put forward our perspective on the current challenges and the future development of morphology and optical tunable direction for the organic micro/nanocrystals.

Abstract:Noble-metal nanocrystals with well-defined and controllable morphologies are of great importance to applications in catalysis, plasmonics, and surface-enhanced spectroscopy. Many synthetic approaches have been demonstrated for controlling the growth habit and thus morphology of metal nanocrystals, but most of them are based on a thermodynamic approach, including the use of a capping agent. While thermodynamic control has shown its power in generating nanocrystals with a myriad of different morphologies, it is ultimately limited by the obligation to minimize the surface energy of a system. As a result, it is impractical to use thermodynamic control to generate nanocrystals having high-energy facets and/or a negative curvature. Using rhodium as an example, here we demonstrate a general method based on kinetic control with a syringe pump that can be potentially extended to other noble metals and even other solid materials. For the first time, we were able to produce concave nanocubes with a large fraction of {110} facets and octapods with a cubic symmetry in high yields by simply controlling the injection rate at which the precursor was added into the reaction solution. The concave nanocubes with {110} facets and a unique cavity structure on the surface are important for a variety of applications.

Abstract:One dimensional(1D)organic axial micro/nanocrystals serving as the building block towards integrated nanostructures have been demonstrated in various nanosystems[1-3].As an emerging solid-state platform,these micro/nanostructures are increasingly being regarded as potential candidates for constructing optoelectronic circuits.Despite remarkable achievements,pioneering works simultaneously revealed the shortage of non-guidance for molecu-lar nucleation in these 1D axial micro/nanostructures[4-6],posing a great challenge for the practical applications.From this perspec-tive,there is urgent to develop special 1D axial micro/nanostruc-tures to promote the generation of highly ordered integrated structures.

Abstract:<p>Colloidal crystals have emerged as promising candidates for building optical microdevices. Techniques now exist for synthesizing them with control over their nanoscale features (e.g., particle compositions, sizes, shapes, and lattice parameters and symmetry); however, the ability to tune macroscale structural features, such as the relative positions of crystals to one another and lattice orientations, has yet to be realized. Here, inspiration is drawn from epitaxial growth strategies in atomic crystallization, and patterned substrates are prepared that, when used in conjunction with DNA‐mediated nanoparticle crystallization, allow for control over individual Wulff‐shaped crystal growth, location, and orientation. In addition, the approach allows exquisite control over the patterned substrate/crystal lattice mismatch, something not yet realized for any epitaxy process. This level of structural control is a significant step toward realizing complex, integrated devices with colloidal crystal components, and this approach provides a model system for further exploration in epitaxy systems.</p>

Abstract:In the "post-Moore's Law" era, new materials are highly expected to bring next revolutionary technologies in electronics and optoelectronics, wherein 2D materials are considered as very promising candidates beyond bulk materials due to their superiorities of atomic thickness, excellent properties, full components, and the compatibility with the processing technologies of traditional complementary metal-oxide semiconductors, enabling great potential in fabrication of logic, storage, optoelectronic, and photonic 2D devices with better performances than state-of-the-art ones. Toward the massive applications of highly integrated 2D devices, large-size 2D single crystals are a prerequisite for the ultimate quality of materials and extreme uniformity of properties. However, at present, it is still very challenging to grow all 2D single crystals into the wafer scale. Therefore, a systematic understanding for controlled growth of various 2D single crystals needs to be further established. Here, four key aspects are reviewed, i.e., nucleation control, growth promotion, surface engineering, and phase control, which are expected to be controllable at different periods during the growth. In addition, the perspectives on designed growth and potential applications are discussed for showing the bright future of these advanced material systems of 2D single crystals.

By virtue of structural understanding, attention was devoted to novel strategies to control morphology and phase formation of nanostructures, and even their assembly to hierarchitectures. Also, the structural analysis gives an alternative way to understand or predict the potential physicochemical properties of inorganic solids. In this article our recent advances in nanostructure generation and their physicochemical-property understanding from crystal structures are highlighted.

Abstract:Growing high-quality crystals with ideal properties is of great importance. The morphology of crystal is one key factor reflecting product quality, as it can affect the performance of products and downstream operations. In this work, the current state of crystal morphology modification is reviewed from different perspectives. First, the most widely used crystal growth models are discussed. Then, a variety of crystal morphology control methods, which include adjustment of crystallization operation parameters, addition of foreign molecules, change of different solvents, membrane assistance, the addition of external physical fields and the use of ball milling are summarized. As for applications, the control of crystal morphology has application potential in pharmaceutical and material fields, for example, energetic materials and semiconductor materials. Finally, the future development direction of crystal morphology regulation is discussed.

Abstract:The design and synthesis of highly ordered and oriented hierarchical structures such as mesocrystals is of great interest due to their superior performance. However, the orientation mechanism is not yet fully understood. Here, we report a subcrystallite growth controlled orientation process to synthesize anisotropic alpha-calcium sulfate hemihydrate (alpha-HH) spherical mesocrystals in a Na(2)EDTA-containing ethylene glycol-water system. The spherical mesocrystals consist of rod-like nanoparticles with parallel crystallographic alignment along the c-axis. The time-dependent experiments indicate that the growth of subcrystallites after self-assembly is crucial for mesocrystal formation, which changes the subunits from an irregular shape to a uniform rod-like shape and synchronously aligns them in the same direction. The crystalline growth of subunits mainly results from the supply of lattice ions released from Ca-EDTA complexes. The cross-section observation reveals that the growth and orientation of the subcrystallites start exteriorly and proceed inward step by step. This work deepens the understanding of mesocrystal formation and opens up a potential way for the design and synthesis of complex and highly ordered structures.

Abstract:Nowadays, organic polar crystals are likely to replace and surpass inorganic crystals as the new generation of functional crystal materials due to their ultrafast nonlinear optical response, low dielectric constant, and strong molecular designability. However, these organic polar crystals with excellent properties often have imperfections, such as rough surfaces, twin boundaries, and narrow-line defects in the bulk. Therefore, there is an urgency to establish methods to maximize their properties starting from the mechanism. Herein, this work first reviews asymmetric growth mechanisms of organic polar crystals, including solvent adsorption inhibition, “relay” growth, “self-poisoning”, and so on. Then, the universal characterization methods of organic polar crystals in terms of crystallography and properties are described in detail. Besides, a careful examination of regulation strategies to obtain high-quality organic polar crystals shows that soft templates, polymer additives, and temperature cycling are prospective approaches. Subsequently, the potential of organic polar crystals for nonlinear optical applications has been continuously explored, and their types can be classified into organic small molecules, organic ionic compounds, and organic poled polymers. Finally, the corresponding future opportunities and challenges are put forward based on the shortcomings and application bottlenecks of the current asymmetric growth mechanism of organic polar crystals.

Abstract:Through regulating the thermodynamic/kinetic growth pathways, a controlled self‐assembly strategy for precise synthesis of organic cocrystals with desired morphologies is demonstrated. The comparable π–π interaction along [011] and charge‐transfer (CT) interaction along [100] facilitate the formation of microplates under low solution concentration, while strong CT interaction along [100] leads to the fabrication of microwires under high concentration. Precise fabrication of organic micro/nanostructures with regular morphology has gained a considerable concern in developing high‐performance optoelectronic devices, which is still a huge challenge to realize tunable morphology without the dependence on molecule packing arrangement. Herein, a thermodynamic/kinetic controlled self‐assembly for triphenylene‐7,7,8,8‐tetracyanoquinodimethane (TP‐TCNQ) cocrystal, with well‐defined microwires and microplates based on the same crystal structure, is proposed. With the low solution concentration of C = 5 mm, the comparable growth rates along [011] driven by π–π interaction and along [100] driven by charge‐transfer (CT) interaction facilitate the formation of thermodynamically favored shape of microplates. In contrast, the prominent CT interaction along [100] leads to the construction of microwires at kinetic state under high‐concentration solution of C = 10 mm. Furthermore, the prepared TP‐TCNQ microwires and microplates demonstrate isotropic photonic transmissions with the low optical loss coefficient of 0.033 and 0.042 dB μm−1, respectively. This strategy provides a novel avenue to finely construct the organic microcrystals with desired morphology for potential optoelectronics.

Abstract:Single crystals possess the most perfect and stable morphology, and represent the intrinsic and upper limits of performance when integrated into various application scenarios. However, for a large portion of the newly emerging low‐dimensional and molecular materials, the mass production of crystals with a desirable shape is still challenging. Here, we provide a universal and high‐yield method to grow functional single crystals with controlled dimensions that could be directly integrated into a device. By utilizing a polymeric flux in combination with a compressed growth space, numerous materials can be grown into size‐controllable single crystalline flakes, with millions produced in one batch. This scalable growth method shows promise for the large‐scale integration of micro‐single crystals as functional components, as exemplified by the construction of a 5‐inch field effect transistor array. Abstract:3D pyramidal polymer single crystals provide spatial gradient variations within the crystal molecules, and these variations facilitate the study of the relationship between structure and properties within the molecules of various complexes with anisotropic structures. As described herein, a low-temperature-assisted microfluidic pore channeling approach is proposed to prepare structurally ordered polymer single crystals. A mixture of dichloromethane and dimethyl sulfoxide is used as a prepolymer, and a liquid microfluidic technique is employed to grow the end-functionalized polymers into 3D polymer single crystals. Through the ordered growth of single crystals, a personalized pyramidal pattern with a homogeneous structure is formed. To evaluate the mesh node density, low-temperature growth time and substrate type are also investigated. Rectangular, pyramidal, and dendritic patterns are synthesized via low-temperature single crystal growth. This work shows that low temperature-assisted microfluidics provides a novel means to tune the 3D structure of polymer single crystals.

Abstract:A nonclassical crystal growth mechanism composed of nucleation, fusion, and growth (NFG) is designed and utilized to grow large‐area atomically flat organic single crystals on a liquid substrate. Organic single crystals with low defect density are key functional materials for next‐generation electronics. Classical crystallization commonly results in a high density of molecular steps, which are defects that can trap charge carriers and reduce the mobility of organic semiconductors. Herein, a novel nonclassical crystallization mechanism involving nucleation, fusion, and growth is designed. The introduction of the fusion stage changes the crystal growth mode from three‐dimensional island growth to two‐dimensional layer‐by‐layer growth and leads to large‐area two‐dimensional molecular crystals with almost no molecular steps. Therefore, the average mobility is observed to improve from 1.26 to 2.07 cm2 V−1 s−1. The nonclassical crystallization mechanism paves the way for atomically flat single crystals to probe the intrinsic optoelectronic properties of organic semiconductors.

Abstract:Single crystal growth is a widely explored method of synthesizing materials in the solid state. The last few decades have seen significant improvements in the techniques used to synthesize single crystals, but there has been comparatively little discussion on ways to disseminate this knowledge. We aim to change that. Here we describe the principles of known single crystal growth techniques as well as lesser-known variations that have assisted in the optimization of defect control in known materials. We offer a perspective on how to think about these synthesis methods in a grand scheme. We consider the temperature interdependence with the reaction time as well as ways to carry out synthesis to scale up and address some outstanding synthesis challenges. We hope our descriptions will aid in technological advancements as well as further developments to gain even better control over synthesis.

A dual growth mode unique for organic crystals relies on mesoscopic liquid precursors

Abstract:Organic solvents host the synthesis of high-value crystals used as pharmaceuticals and optical devices, among other applications. A knowledge gap persists on how replacing the hydrogen bonds and polar attraction that dominate aqueous environments with the weaker van der Waals forces affects the growth mechanism, including its defining feature, whether crystals grow classically or nonclassically. Here we demonstrate a rare dual growth mode of etioporphyrin I crystals, enabled by liquid precursors that associate with crystal surfaces to generate stacks of layers, which then grow laterally by incorporating solute molecules. Our findings reveal the precursors as mesoscopic solute-rich clusters, a unique phase favored by weak bonds such as those between organic solutes. The lateral spreading of the precursor-initiated stacks of layers crucially relies on abundant solute supply directly from the solution, bypassing diffusion along the crystal surface; the direct incorporation pathway may, again, be unique to organic solvents. Clusters that evolve to amorphous particles do not seamlessly integrate into crystal lattices. Crystals growing fast and mostly nonclassically at high supersaturations are not excessively strained. Our findings demonstrate that the weak interactions typical of organic systems promote nonclassical growth modes by supporting liquid precursors and enabling the spreading of multilayer stacks.

Abstract:The fundamental understanding of the relationship between crystal structure and the dynamic processes of anisotropic growth on the nanoscale, and exploration of the key factors governing the evolution of physical properties in functional nanomaterials, have become two of the most urgent and challenging issues in the fabrication and exploitation of functional nanomaterials with designed properties and the development of nanoscale devices. Herein, we show how structural and kinetic factors govern the tendency for anisotropic growth of such materials under hydrothermal conditions, and how the crystal structure and morphology influence the optical properties of Ln3+-doped nanocrystals. The synthesis of phase-pure and single-crystalline monoclinic, hexagonal, and tetragonal one-dimensional LnPO4 nanostructures of different aspect ratios by means of kinetically controlled hydrothermal growth processes is demonstrated. It is shown that the tendency for anisotropic growth under hydrothermal conditions can be enhanced simply by modifying the chemical potentials of species in the reaction solution through the use of carefully selected chelating ligands. A systematic study of the photoluminescence of various Eu3+-doped lanthanide phosphates has revealed that the optical properties of these nanophosphors are strongly dependent on their crystal structures and morphologies.

Abstract:One-dimensional (1-D) nanostructures of materials have received great research attention because of their unique photochemistry, photophysical, and electron-transport properties different from those of bulky or nanoparticle materials. One of the main challenges in this field is how to precisely control the sizes, dimensionalities, compositions, and crystal structures of materials in nanoscale. This review summarizes the recent progress in the solution-based routes to prepare 1-D nanostructures, highlighting the contribution from this laboratory. Crystal structure as one of the inherent factors that may determine the growth behavior of the nanocrystals is emphasized in this paper. Particularly compounds with layered structures or anistropic crystal structures are given special attention in the controlled growth of 1-D nanostructures. This review aims to present a relatively general understanding of the correlation between the crystal structure and growth behavior of materials under solution-based conditions and show how to choose appropriate conditions for the growth of 1-D nanostructures.

Abstract:The shape of CdSe and other semiconductor nanocrystals is controlled, producing dots, rods, rice-shaped particles, tetrapods, or other elongated shapes. Monomer concentration in the growth solution is the determining factor in shape-control and shape-evolution. The elongated shapes could be transformed into more spherical shapes if the monomer concentration in the solution was lowered to a certain level, and spherically shaped nanocrystals could grow to elongated shapes by simply increasing the monomer concentration. The precursors are stable, inexpensive, and relatively non-toxic, and therefore good choices for the growth of nearly monodisperse and shape-controlled nanocrystals.
