Abstract:Indium selenide (In2Se3) has attracted tremendous attention due to its favorable electronic features, broad tunable bandgap, high stability and other attractive properties. However, its further applications for nonlinear optics have not yet been fully explored. In this work, we demonstrate that few-layer α-In2Se3 nanosheets exhibit strong saturable absorption properties over a wide wavelength range covering 800, 1064 and 1550 nm. The few-layer α-In2Se3 nanosheets used for this experiment are fabricated via a simple ultrasonic exfoliation in liquid. Stable ultrafast mode-locking laser pulses are obtained from both ytterbium-doped and erbium-doped fiber laser systems operating at 1064 and 1550 nm, respectively. A pulse duration as short as 215 fs was achieved in the Er-doped fiber laser system. Stable output pulses over 6 h of operation were obtained in both laser systems. The pulse energy and peak power of the laser output pulses were increased by reducing the In2Se3 thickness. These results indicate that α-In2Se3 nanosheets with low layer numbers are promising candidates for broad ultrafast photonics devices, such as optical switchers, Q-switchers and mode lockers.
Broadband Nonlinear Optical Response of InSe Nanosheets for the Pulse Generation From 1 to 2 μm.

Abstract:Few-layered InSe nanosheets were fabricated by the simple liquid-phase exfoliation method. The morphology and crystal structure features of InSe nanosheet sample were characterized comprehensively. The photoluminescence (PL) spectrum indicated that the liquid-phase exfoliated InSe nanosheets contained variously layered nanoflakes, where eight layers nanosheets dominate. In addition, the first-principle simulation was carried out to describe the electron density of states (DOS) and the electronic band structures. Moreover, the few-layered InSe nanosheets performed excellent nonlinear absorption properties in a broad spectral band. As an application, the stable passively Q-switched (PQS) lasers with few-layered InSe nanosheets saturable absorbers (SAs) were realized with the operating wavelengths at 1.06, 1.34, and 1.91 μm. The shortest pulse durations were 599, 520, and 210 ns, respectively. Our results confirmed that the few-layered InSe nanosheets could be an excellent candidate for pulsed lasers in wide spectral bands.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials, especially the transition metal sulfide semiconductors, have drawn great interests due to their potential applications in viable photonic and optoelectronic devices, such as saturable absorbers (SAs) and optical switches, etc. In this work, tungsten disulfide (WS2) based SA for ultrafast photonic applications was demonstrated. WS2 nanosheets were prepared using liquid-phase exfoliation method and embedded in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) thin film for the practical usage. Saturable absorption was observed in the WS2-PVA SA at the telecommunication waveband near 1550 nm. By incorporating WS2-PVA SA into a fiber laser cavity, both stable mode locking operation and Q-switching operation were achieved. In the mode locking operation, the laser obtained femtosecond output pulse width and high spectral purity in the radio frequency spectrum. In the Q-switching operation, the laser had tunable repetition rate and output pulse energy of a few tens of nano joule. Our findings suggest that few-layer WS2 nanosheets embedded in PVA thin film are promising nonlinear optical materials for ultrafast photonic applications as a mode locker or Q-switcher.

Enhanced Nonlinear Optical Response of Se-doped MoS2 Nanosheets for Passively Q-switched Fiber Laser Application.

Abstract:An enhanced nonlinear optical (NLO) performance was observed in Se-doped MoS2 nanosheets synthesized through a facile annealing process. Se-doped MoS2 nanosheets with a large saturable intensity and high modulation depth generated stable passively Q-switched fiber laser pulses at 1559 nm. In comparison with the Q-switched fiber laser utilizing the pristine MoS2 nanosheets as a saturable absorber, the passive Q-switching operation based on Se-doped MoS2 nanosheets could be conducted at a lower threshold power of 50 mW, a wider range of repetition rates from 28.97 to 130 kHz, and a higher SNR of 56 dB. More importantly, the shortest pulse duration of 1.502 μs was realized and the output power and pulse energy reached 17.2 mW and 133.07 nJ, respectively. These results indicate that tailoring the chemical composition of optical nanomaterials by introducing a dopant is a feasible method of improving the NLO response of the MoS2 nanosheets and realizing excellent ultrafast pulse generation.
Broadband saturable absorption responses of few-layered MoSe 2 nanosheets for all-solid-state Q-switched lasers

Abstract:Few-layered molybdenum diselenide (MoSe 2 ) nanosheets were successfully fabricated by the ultrasound-assisted liquid phase exfoliation (UALPE) method. It exhibits broadband nonlinear optical (NLO) responses with optical modulation depths of 12.4% and 9.3% at 1.3 and 2 μm, respectively. Based on this, it was transferred onto a quartz substrate, acting as a saturable absorber (SA) to initiate solid-state pulsed lasers. The Q-switched Nd: GdVO 4 laser with a minimum pulse duration of 366 ns and a repetition rate of 196 kHz was generated at around 1.3 μm. Meanwhile, the Q-switched Tm: YLF laser with a minimum pulse duration of 200 ns and a repetition rate of 43 kHz was obtained at around 2 μm. The experimental results indicate that few-layered MoSe 2 nanosheets have a significant development prospect as a SA in optical modulation with a broad spectral band range at the near-infrared (NIR) band.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a multi-wavelength ultrafast erbium-doped fiber laser incorporating a μm-scale topological insulator: Bi2Se3/Polyvinyl Alcohol film as both an excellent saturable absorber for mode-locking and a high-nonlinear medium to induce a giant third order optical nonlinear effect for mitigating the mode competition of erbium-doped fiber laser and stabilizing the multi-wavelength oscillation. By properly adjusting the pump power and the polarization state, the single-, dual-, triple-, four-wavelength mode-locking pulse could be stably initiated. For the four-wavelength operation, we obtain its pulse width of ∼22 ps and a fundamental repetition rate of 8.83 MHz. The fiber laser exhibits the maximum output power of 9.7 mW with the pulse energy of 1.1 nJ and peak power of 50 W at the pump power of 155 mW. Our study shows that the simple, stable, low-cost multi-wavelength ultrafast fiber laser could be applied in various potential fields, such as optical communication, biomedical research, and radar system. © 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

Abstract:Novel layered bismuth oxysulfide (Bi 2 O 2 S) has shown great potential in photoelectric detection, photocatalysis, and photochemical cells due to its excellent properties such as excellent environmental stability, high carrier mobility, and favorite band gap (about 1∼1.5 eV). These excellent physical properties also make it advantageous for applications in the field of ultrafast photonics. However, to date, there has been no reported research on Bi 2 O 2 S in ultrafast fiber lasers. In this work, we report a facile method to synthesize Bi 2 O 2 S nanosheets by a combination of the hydrothermal and liquid-phase exfoliation (LPE) methods with good crystallinity and thickness less than 10 nm. Further, stable mode-locked pulses are achieved by applying the Bi 2 O 2 S SA in Er-doped and Tm-doped fiber lasers, respectively. The Er-doped mode-locked fiber laser has a pulse width of 453.6 fs and the optical spectrum is stable, with a maximum output power of 5.1 mW in the mode-locked state. The obtained Tm-doped mode-locked fiber laser based on Bi 2 O 2 S has an estimated pulse width of 2.69 ps and a maximum output power of 7.13 mW. Our results provide new opportunities for the development of Bi 2 O 2 S together with its application in ultrafast photonics.

Abstract:Recently, niobium-carbide (Nb2C) nanosheets, a member of MXene family, have gained significant attention because of their unique physical and chemical properties. Here, the few-layer Nb2C nanosheets were synthesized by a combination of selective etching and liquid cascade centrifugation. The broadband absorption properties of the few-layer Nb2C nanosheets were systematically investigated by the open-aperture Z-scan technique. The results indicate the excellent saturable absorption responses of Nb2C nanosheets, revealing the promising optical modulate application of Nb2C in solid-state lasers. Using the Nb2C saturable absorber (SA), passively Q-switched solid-state lasers from visible to near-infrared range were realized, which presented a promising alternative for a broadband optical modulator. Furthermore, a passively mode-locked laser at 1.06 μm was successfully achieved based on the Nb2C SA. A pulse duration of 13.5 ps was produced with the maximum average output power of 426 mW and a repetition rate of 99.1 MHz. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time to use Nb2C nanosheets as a broadband SA for the solid-state lasers. The results may promote further applications of 2D optoelectronic materials from visible to near-infrared range.

Abstract:We report on the formation of the nanosecond pulse in an erbium-doped fiber laser mode-locked with a molybdenum diselenide (MoSe2)-deposited microfiber. The evolution of the pulse states from slightly chirped picosecond pulse to highly chirped nanosecond pulse was observed. As the pump power increases to a certain value, the picosecond pulse abruptly transforms into nanosecond pulse with the pulse duration of 70 ns and the maximum pulse energy of 21 nJ at the fundamental repetition rate of 3.54 MHz. With the advantages of high pulse energy, large pulse duration, and low peak power, the nanosecond pulse could be destined for amplification and compression to achieve high-power applications promisingly.

Abstract:Ternary transition metal chalcogenides (TTMCs) are emerging as a promising branch of two-dimensional (2D) materials due to their special layered structure as well as wide-range tunable bandgap properties, which permit the implementation of novel optoelectronic characteristics. The manifestation of nonlinear optical properties of MoxTa(1-x)Se2 nanosheets and their application in ultrafast erbium-doped fiber (EDF) laser is reported in this work. The MoxTa(1-x)Se2 nanosheets were fabricated by employing the liquid phase exfoliation technology. In addition, the saturable absorption property of MoxTa(1-x)Se2-based saturable absorber (SA) is illustrated by obtaining a large optical modulation depth of 32.01 (0.76)%. Furthermore, an operational ultrashort pulse fiber laser was demonstrated. The laser has the ability to emit ultrashort pulses of 377 (0.3) fs at 1532 nm while a maximum output power of 10.52 mW was delivered by the employed within the EDF cavity MoxTa(1-x)Se2-based SA. Our experimental results provide concrete pieces of evidence that the MoxTa(1-x)Se2 nanosheets exhibit third-order optical nonlinearity and the significant potential in nonlinear optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:The magnetic nanomaterial Mn3Si2Te6 is a promising option for spin-dependent electronic and magneto-optoelectronic devices. However, its application in nonlinear optics remains fanciful. Here, we demonstrate a pulsed Er-doped fiber laser (EDFL) based on a novel quasi-2D Mn3Si2Te6 saturable absorber (SA) with low pump power at 1.5 μm. The high-quality Mn3Si2Te6 crystals were synthesized by the self-flux method, and the ultrathin Mn3Si2Te6 nanoflakes were prepared by a simple mechanical exfoliation procedure. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time laser pulses have been generated using quasi-2D Mn3Si2Te6. A stable pulsed laser at 1562 nm with a low threshold pump power of 60 mW was produced by integrating the Mn3Si2Te6 SA into an EDFL cavity. The maximum power of the output pulse is 783 μW. The repetition rate can vary from 24.16 to 44.44 kHz, with corresponding pulse durations of 5.64 to 3.41 μs. Our results indicate that the quasi-2D Mn3Si2Te6 is a promising material for application in ultrafast photonics.

Abstract:Two-dimensional materials are among the most efficient optical materials for Q-switched pulse applications, rising to unprecedented heights. Although the exploration of 2D nanomaterials has attracted strong interest, the results from current studies remain questionable, requiring further achievements in tailored control of their properties. In this work, antimony sulfide (Sb2S3) nanosheets are prepared by liquid-phase exfoliation, and nanosheets of different sizes are obtained by regulating ultrasonication parameters and centrifugation speed. The nonlinear optical properties of Sb2S3 nanosheets are investigated using the Z-scan technique for the first time, which exhibit excellent saturable absorption and thereby promising potential for saturable absorber applications. Among the different sizes of Sb2S3 nanosheets, the smaller-sized nanosheets exhibit better nonlinear optical properties, which is ascribed to the higher proportion of surfaces and edges. Finally, stable laser pulses with peak power as high as 2.68 W are readily generated at the wavelength of 1064 nm. This work opens an innovative avenue toward nonlinear optical devices based on Sb2S3 and provides reasonable regulation of 2D saturable absorbers.

Broadband Nonlinear Photonics in Zeolite-Based Selenium Chains

Abstract:As one of the 1D nanomaterials, Se nanochains have been widely used in photoelectric devices, such as photodetectors, battery devices, and optical sensors due to their excellent photoelectric properties. Among them, ultrafast photonics has attracted much attention due to its wide applications; for instance, environmental monitoring, material processing, biomedical imaging, nonlinear optical generation, and free-space optical communication. Herein, Se nanochains are fabricated by trapping Se species in the circular 1D channel of AlPO4-5 (AFI) crystal, and the characteristics of Se@AFI are systemically investigated. In addition, the AFI single crystal loaded with Se nanochains in the channel is successfully prepared as a saturable absorber in the fiber laser. The mode-locking pulse at 1.5 and 1 mu m with the repetition rate of 13.16 and 14.74 MHz can be obtained by integrating the Se@AFI composite material in the cavity. The signal-to-noise ratios are both over 70 dB, suggesting the high operational stability of the pulses. These results indicate that Se@AFI has good potential as saturable absorber material with a broad wavelength range for ultrafast pulsed fiber lasers. Our results will also provide a new idea for designing air-stable ultrafast photonic devices and other composite materials in various fields.

Abstract:Ultrafast photonics has become an interdisciplinary topic of great consequence due to the spectacular progress of compact and efficient ultrafast pulse generation. Wide spectrum bandwidth is the key element for ultrafast pulse generation due to the Fourier transform limitation. Herein, monoclinic Nb2GeTe4, an emerging class of ternary narrow-gap semiconductors, was used as a real saturable absorber (SA), which manifests superior wide-range optical absorption. The crystallization form and growth mechanism of Nb2GeTe4 were revealed by a thermodynamic phase diagram. Furthermore, the Nb2GeTe4-SA showed reliable saturation intensity and larger modulation depth, ascribed to a built-in electric field driven by the asymmetric crystal architecture confirmed via X-ray diffraction, polarized Raman spectra, and scanning transmission electron microscopy. Based on the Nb2GeTe4-SA, femtosecond mode-locked operation with good overall performance was achieved by a properly designed ring cavity. These results suggest that Nb2GeTe4 shows great promise for ultrafast photonic applications and arouse interests in exploring the intriguing properties of the ternary van der Waals material family.

Heavily Doped Semiconductor Colloidal Nanocrystals As Ultra-Broadband Switches for Near-Infrared and Mid-Infrared Pulse Lasers.

Abstract:Heavily self-doped semiconductors can be designed to be used in advanced photonics due to both fabrication and functional advantages. Ultrafast response, strong optical nonlinearity, broadband wavelength range, and accessibility of integration are major challenges for ultrafast all-optical photonics to operate in the infrared wavelength range. Here, solution-processed Cu1.8Se semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) demonstrate an ultrafast response (about 360-520 fs), strong optical nonlinearity (as large as -1.4 X 10(3) cm GW(-1)), and broadband (from 800 to 3000 nm) nonlinear optical absorption in the near-infrared and mid-infrared wavelength ranges. The ultrafast response and larger optical nonlinearity may be triggered by the plasma ground-state bleaching in the strong surface electromagnetic filed. Stable Q-switched lasers in Er-doped fiber laser, Tm-doped fiber laser, and Ho/Pr-codoped ZBLAN fiber laser are operated, respectively. These findings indicate that Cu1.8Se NCs are prospective nonlinear materials for ultrafast response and broadband pulse laser.
Femtosecond mode-locked laser at 1.5 μm region using topological semimetals NbAs nanosheets

Abstract:For the first time, NbAs nanosheets are used as a saturable absorber for fiber laser mode locking, achieving high efficiency saturation absorption. NbAs nanosheets are prepared through a liquid-phase exfoliation method, and the following nonlinear optical testing is performed with a self-built twin balanced detection device, with a modulation depth of 3.92 %. Additionally, NbAs nanosheets are embedded in erbium-doped fiber laser as saturable absorber to produce stable laser output with excellent performance. NbAs nanosheets based saturable absorber can achieve a pulse width of 640 fs. Compared with other topological materials, weyl semi-metal NbAs nanosheets based saturable absorber shows narrower pulses and broader linewidths. Those results hold significant importance for exploring the potential applications of NbAs in ultrafast fiber lasers.

Abstract:Abstract Atomically thin Bi 2 O 2 Se has emerged as a novel two-dimensional (2D) material with an ultrabroadband nonlinear optical response, high carrier mobility and excellent air stability, showing great potential for the realization of optical modulators. Here, we demonstrate a femtosecond solid-state laser at 1.0 μm with Bi 2 O 2 Se nanoplates as a saturable absorber (SA). Upon further defect regulation in 2D Bi 2 O 2 Se, the average power of the mode-locked laser is improved from 421 mW to 665 mW, while the pulse width is decreased from 587 fs to 266 fs. Moderate Ar + plasma treatments are employed to precisely regulate the O and Se defect states in Bi 2 O 2 Se nanoplates. Nondegenerate pump-probe measurements show that defect engineering effectively accelerates the trapping rate and defect-assisted Auger recombination rate of photocarriers. The saturation intensity is improved from 3.6 ± 0.2 to 12.8 ± 0.6 MW cm −2 after the optimized defect regulation. The enhanced saturable absorption and ultrafast carrier lifetime endow the high-performance mode-locked laser with both large output power and short pulse duration.

Abstract:In this study, we propose an interfacial engineering method to modify indium selenide (InSe) nanosheets via Au particles. The fabricated microfiber-based InSe-Au saturable absorber (SA) exhibited excellent nonlinear absorption properties and enabled to achieve ultrashort pulse output from 1.5-μm and 2-μm mode-locked fiber lasers. To the best of our knowledge, this is the shortest mode-locking pulse (507 fs) achieved from 1.5-μm fiber lasers and the first demonstration of 2-μm mode-locked fiber lasers using the InSe SA. These results indicate that the InSe-Au heterostructure is a promising nonlinear optical material for ultrafast photonics in the near- and mid-infrared regions.

Abstract:This work reports the nonlinear optical properties and ultrafast carrier dynamics of indium selenide (InSe) nanosheets obtained via liquid-phase exfoliation under pulsed excitation with different durations. InSe nanosheets exhibit a better saturable absorption response under 6 ns pulse excitation than that under 380 fs excitation. In addition, the scattering phenomena of InSe dispersions with different mechanisms under various pulse durations are discovered, which are caused by the thermal effect under ns pulse excitation and dynamic spatial self-phase modulation affected by laser streaming under fs pulse excitation. The pump-probe measurements reveal that the InSe dispersion has ultrafast saturable absorption and photoinduced absorption processes, which may be caused by free carrier absorption or bandgap renormalization.
