Abstract:The present study addresses the ultimate bearing capacity of strip footings on rock slopes under seismic conditions. The stress characteristics method (SCM) is combined with the modified pseudo-dynamic (MPD) approach for the intended purpose. Unlike the solutions available in the literature, the generation of the stress characteristics network within the framework of the SCM automates the potential failure mechanism of the slope medium at the limiting state of collapse. The MPD approach enables the analysis to capture realistic earthquake inertia forces induced in the slope, considering the material damping properties of the slope. The non-linear nature of the rock mass strength is captured using the generalized Hoek-Brown failure criterion. The seismic ultimate bearing capacity of strip footings is reported as non-dimensional charts. Additionally, the impact of relevant dynamic characteristics of seismic waves and rock mass properties is thoroughly assessed by conducting a detailed parametric investigation. The results reveal a substantial reduction in the ultimate bearing capacity of footings resting on rock slopes under earthquake conditions. The efficacy of the proposed methodology is validated with the existing solutions reported by various researchers.

Abstract:Conventional stability analysis of slopes is established on vertical slices with a linear Mohr-Coulomb (MC) failure criterion. In this paper, the soil mass of slopes is assumed to follow linear and nonlinear failure criteria. A new procedure is proposed for determination of stability factors of slopes using triangular slices within the framework of limit analysis method under plane strain condition. The potential sliding mass is divided into a series of triangular slices, rather than vertical slices as usual. Using a generalized tangential technique, the nonlinear failure criterion is simplified as a set of straight lines according to the linear MC failure criterion. The straight line is tangential to the curve of the nonlinear failure criterion. With a linear MC failure criterion, solutions to stability factors are determined by limit analysis theory, which agree well with the published solutions. With triangular slices method, a study is carried out to investigate the influences of nonlinear parameter on stability of the soil slope.

Abstract:Earthquake is a major trigger for failure of rock slope in seismically active regions. This study presents a novel pseudo-dynamic approach for predicting the seismic stability of slopes in Hoek–Brown rock masses, in which the earthquake effect is characterized by a sinusoidal seismic wave with a motion amplification behavior. The discretization kinematic analysis combined with generalized tangent technique is also used to construct the failure mechanism of the rotation sliding of seismic slopes. The methodology was validated through comparison with published results and numerical simulation. The effect of temporal and spatial varying of seismic waves on slope stability was investigated. The results indicate that the pseudo-static approach may over or underestimate the stability of rock slopes. The pseudo-dynamic analysis is recommended to provide a more meaningful solution of safety factors. A parametric study was also carried out to explore the effect of rock strength, slope geometry, and earthquake parameters.

Abstract:Rock slopes with planar joints or weak structural planes are vulnerable in nature, especially suffering from the natural hazards, instabilities of slopes are more prone to occur. Therefore, concerning to the influence of earthquakes, this paper performs a new procedure to evaluate slope stability in a geomaterial governed by Hoek–Brown strength criterion. A rotational failure mechanism determined by 21 dependent angle variables is introduced to respect the Hoek–Brown strength criterion. The earthquake load is characterized by a modified pseudo-dynamic method that does not violate the zero boundary condition and considers the damping properties of geomaterials. A slice approach is adopted to calculate the earthquake-induced inertial force work rate. The stability number of rock slope is considered to measure the safety. The stability number is formulated as a classical optimization problem controlled by 21 dependent angle variables and a time variable which need to be optimized by the genetic algorithm toolbox. Comparisons with the literature are made to prove rationality and accuracy of the proposed procedure. Parametric study is carried out to reveal the influence of dynamic properties. For engineering application, stability charts are provided for a quick assessment of slope safety.

Analytical calculation of the critical inclination of rock slopes with a planar failure surface under water pressure

Abstract:For the rock slope without a definite sliding surface，finding the position of the most dangerous sliding surface with planar failure and critical inclination is beneficial to accurately assess the stability of the slope and to the design of slope engineering. The mechanical model of rock slope with a planar failure considering the water pressure is established，and the unified analytical solution of the critical inclination is obtained by minimizing the value of a certain function. The reasonable form of water pressure distribution on the sliding surface is adopted and the detailed analytical solution of critical inclination is obtained considering the facts whether the front edge of the slope is blocked，whether a tension crack exists at the back edge of the slope，whether the sliding surface is filled with water，etc. The analysis results indicate that within a certain range，the critical inclination increases with the the height of the slope，the slope angle，the internal friction angle of the sliding surface，the unit weight and the height of the water table. The higher the cohesion of the sliding surface，the lower the critical inclination. The critical inclination is firstly increased and then decreased with the depth of the tension crack. There are differences in the critical inclination obtained with the different models of hydraulic pressure distribution. The drainage conditions of the slope have a significant influence on the critical inclination. A program calculating the critical inclination was written according to the established analytical solution.

Abstract:Failure of earthen slopes is a very recurrent phenomenon, credited mainly due to the excess rainfall and application of surfeit surcharge. However, most of the analyses regarding slope stability were performed without considering the unsaturated state of the soil. The prime purpose of the present manuscript is to address the stability of unsaturated homogeneous slopes subjected to surcharge load and pseudo-static seismic forces under different climatic conditions. The upper bound limit analysis technique was used based on the log-spiral failure mechanism. The suction stress-based effective stress approach was used to capture the effect of the unsaturated zone of the slope. The suction stress is modelled using Gardner's one-parameter hydraulic conductivity function and van-Genuchten's soil water characteristics curve. An extensive parametric study is carried out to assess the combined effect of slope geometry, soil-strength parameters, hydro-mechanical parameters, depth of water table, various flow conditions, surcharge load, and seismic loading. A few stability charts are proposed to show the impact of surcharge load and seismic load separately on unsaturated homogeneous slopes subjected to various climatic conditions. The present computed solutions match quite well with the available solutions prescribed in the literature.

Abstract:During the monsoon season, landslides are common in mountainous areas, disrupting transportation and day-to-day activities. The stability of slopes along rock cuts on mountainous roads is a major problem since it causes traffic disruption, property loss, and even death. Slope stability is a fascinating research area in geology and geotechnical engineering. Aside from the natural strength of the rock mass and its attitude, other unknown factors contribute to slope failure: characteristics, simulation methodologies, failure and applied loads, and so on. The research region is characterized by moderately strong and strongly jointed rocks with harsh terrain features and a history of rockfall events. This geological phenomenon can be found on State Highway-5 Markundi. Based on rock discontinuities and slope face characteristics, the conventional and numerical methods were used to determine the mode of failure of rock cut slopes. The slope failure was investigated using kinematic analysis, and finite element analysis suggests rock slopes will be stable at an angle of 75o. The failure pattern of detached blocks and their potential for additional movement under gravity as well as seismic loading for four locations have been studied using finite element analysis in numerical simulations, and the mean factor of safety (FoS) has been reported as 1.41.

Abstract:A probabilistic framework that considers the variability and uncertainty of the ground motions caused by earthquakes and the parameters of the slope material is proposed to assess the seismic stability of rock slopes. A stochastic ground motion simulation method, which reflects certain earthquake scenarios and site characteristics, was used to generate accelerograms as seismic inputs. Then, the probabilities of failure (Pf) of the slopes when subjected to earthquake ground motions were computed via Monte-Carlo simulations based on the simulated ground motions and the decoupled Newmark permanent-displacement analysis. An example rock slope was used to illustrate the proposed procedure and verify its rationality. The results showed that the magnitudes of the earthquakes and the source-to-site distances had significant influences on the seismic stability of the slopes. For an earthquake of the same magnitude, the Pf of the slope decreased rapidly as the source-to-site distance increased. In addition, given the same source-to-site distance, the Pf of the slope increased steadily as the magnitudes of the earthquakes increased. Also, it was found that the influence of coefficient of variation of the slope's shear strength parameters (i.e., c, φ) was not negligible when the uncertainty of earthquakes was not considered. However, it may be overshadowed by the significant influence of a great earthquake, especially when the variability of ground motions is taken into account. The results that were obtained agreed well with observed earthquake-induced landslide phenomena and the statistical data of two typical earthquakes that occurred in Japan and China, which implies that the proposed method is accurate.

Abstract:The Himalayan belt is highly susceptible to landslides since majority of slopes comprise of highly weathered and deformed rocks with unfavourable orientation of structural discontinuities. Inappropriate planning of road-cutting often weakens the existing hill slopes, often triggering slides due to antecedent rainfall or earthquake occurrence. In the present study, a road stretch (~25 km length) along the National Highway (NH-58) between Shivpuri to Kaudiyala in Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, India has been studied which includes a mix of stable, partially stable and unstable road-cut slopes. Various rockmass classification techniques such as Geological Strength Index (GSI), Rock Mass Rating (RMR basic ) , Slope Mass Rating (SMR), Continuous Slope Mass Rating (CSMR) and Q-slope have been used for qualitative slope stability assessment. A quantified slope stability analysis by deterministic approach of all these studied road-cut slopes has been carried out using two-dimensional finite element method. Further, a comparative study has been performed between qualitative and quantified outcomes of the stability analysis. Finally, following the slope support guidelines chart based on SMR, stability analyses of two significant road-cut slopes have been carried out to understand their practical implications. It has been concluded that both SMR and CSMR techniques showed similar results for the stability grades of the studied slopes. However, these classification techniques are more effective for rapid assessment of slope stability, whereas the deterministic approach through finite element analysis is more prudent for designing any slope stability measures. Therefore, the presented methodology will be useful for a critical assessment of slope stability vis-à-vis to prepare a guideline for selection of appropriate design of control measures. Abstract:In the present work, seismic performance parameters have been reviewed by considering the possible combined action of vertical and horizontal seismic loadings of the ground motion during the earthquakes. Analytical expressions of factor of safety, yield seismic coefficient and permanent seismic displacement of a cohesive-frictional soil slope have been developed by following deterministic sliding block approach in a two-dimensional pseudo-static framework. The slope with a planar failure surface is assumed to follow the Mohr-Coulomb criterion by considering a slice of unit thickness through the slope. For a given range of slope geometrical and soil parameters, the role of vertical seismic coefficient has been analysed in the presence of cohesion to investigate its effect on factor of safety, yield seismic coefficient, and consequently on the permanent seismic displacement of the slope through a set of graphical presentations. The results show that avoidance of vertical seismic component of the ground motion in the stability analysis may lead to severe slope failures. The general expressions proposed herein can be used to carry out a quantitative stability assessment of cohesive- frictional soil slopes during earthquakes in real-life projects.

Abstract:Three-dimensional upper-bound analysis of rock slopes subjected to seepage flows is a classical problem in geotechnical engineering. However, it is difficult to obtain a rigorous upper-bound solution of the safety factor of slopes when seepage flows are involved. In order to address this problem, the three-dimensional (3D) hydraulic head distributions inside a slope under steady state hydraulic conditions are solved numerically. The obtained numerical hydraulic head distributions are further employed to compute the seepage forces applying to the 3D discretized rotational failure mechanism to assess the stability of a rock slope. The Hoek-Brown yield criterion is employed to characterize the failure of rock masses. The generalized tangential technique is employed to formulate the problem as a classical optimization problem. The particle swarm optimization algorithm combined with the Nelder-Mead simplex algorithm is used to search for the best solutions of slope safety factor. The proposed approach is validated by comparing with 2D plane strain analysis results in the literature. Parametric analysis shows that the safety factor increases as <math>mi</math> or GSI increases, but decreases with the increase of the slope angle <math>β</math> and B/H. It is also found that the 3D influence is significant for B/H smaller than 10, beyond which it becomes negligible. The computational results in the form of design tables are presented for practical use in rock engineering.

Abstract:Slope instability is a complex geological phenomenon triggered by heavy rainfall, earthquakes, tectonic forces and anthropogenic activities. Unplanned excavation of rock slopes for the development and maintenance of infrastructure such as highways, railways, and buildings in hilly regions plays a significant role in causing slope instability. The present work conducts a comprehensive stability assessment of rock slopes along the national highway (NH-44) section of the Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir. The kinematic investigation was carried out to determine the different modes of failure of road-cut slopes, and two main modes were found: planar and wedge. Various empirical classifications have been applied for the assessment of slope stability, like geological strength index (GSI), slope mass rating (SMR), Chinese slope mass rating (CSMR), and continuous slope mass rating (CoSMR). Numerical analysis through universal distinct element code (UDEC) has been conducted to evaluate the stability of four critical rock slopes under static and dynamic loading conditions. Modelling results have provided insights into the failure mechanism, and based on these findings, remedial measures have been proposed. Three (L-1, L-3, and L-13) out of four slopes were determined to be unstable under static conditions, with factors of safety (FoS) < 1.2 and under dynamic conditions, two slopes were unstable with FoS < 1.0. However, one (L-8) slope was found to be stable under both static and dynamic conditions, with FoS 1.29 and 1.12, respectively. Installing rock bolts reduced displacement for slopes L-1 and L-13, with reductions of 11.86% and 21.05% under static conditions and 4.09% and 18.75% under dynamic conditions, respectively, while L-3 does not stabilise even after installation of rock bolts.

Abstract:Abstract Most rock slope stability analysis methods are based on the Hoke–Brown criterion under a two‐dimensional state of stress, which somewhat ignores the effect of intermediate principal stress. In this paper, by introducing the improved three‐dimensional H‐B criterion into the Meridian plane, the tangent line of a point on the H‐B strength envelope is regarded as its instantaneous equivalent M‐C parameter. Based on this, a formula for solving the equivalent M‐C strength parameters under a three‐dimensional stress state is established to describe the shear strength parameters of rock mass, considering different stress states. Taking three kinds of rocks as examples, the influence of the intermediate principal stress on their strength parameters is analyzed. On this basis, the realization scheme of the nonlinear strength reduction method is established, the stability of the slope is studied, and an example verifies the feasibility of this method. This method fully considers the nonlinear characteristics of rock slope strength parameters under a three‐dimensional stress state and provides a solid basis for slope stability analysis.

Abstract:Regarding the geotechnical aspects, it is very important to correctly estimate a slope’s safety factor against failure. Slope failures, in general, cost a lot of money, hinder transportation, and can even kill people in the worst cases. To successfully prevent such failures, it is required to find proper understanding of the failure mechanisms such that proper analysis techniques may be chosen to appropriately determine the stability of any soil/rock slope. Slope stability analyses in two dimensions have been very popular among the practicing engineers because of the relative simplicity of the underlying concepts, as well as because it also provides conservative estimates of the FOS against failure. However, in many situations where the slope geometry and the loading conditions do not conform the plane strain idealization, a two-dimensional slope analysis can yield results which are far from accurate. In such situations, the only viable option is to study the slope failure analysis in three dimensions. Stability status of a slope in three dimensions is essential when the failure mass and slope geometry alter laterally, the soil/rock properties are anisotropic and not homogeneous, and the local surcharges are applied to the slope. Based upon finite element analysis, limit analysis, and limit equilibrium, stability status in three dimensions has been determined since the 1970s. Many of them are only applicable in specific circumstances. The present paper focuses on presenting an overall picture of different aspects of slope stability analysis in a comprehensive manner.
Rock slope stability assessment based on the critical failure state curve for the generalized Hoek‒Brown criterion

Abstract:The strength reduction method (SRM) based on the generalized Hoek‒Brown (GHB) criterion has become an important and popular topic to analyse the stability of rock slopes. Various reduction strategies have been proposed and applied by the civil and mining engineering community. This paper proposed a new SRM for rock slopes with the GHB criterion based on the critical failure state curve (CFSC). The existence of the CFSC has been proven by theoretical analysis, and the explicit expression of the CFSCs for different parameters m i and slope angles β, considering the influence of disturbance factor D, has been obtained by curve fitting based on a great deal of simulation data. The new SRM provides a graphic method to determine the parameters at the critical failure state from the initial state by reducing the compressive strength of intact rock σ ci and the parameter combination s α with the same ratio and proposes a definition of the factor of safety (FOS) based on the parameters of the two states. This method was applied to nine slope examples to verify its validity and accuracy. The relative errors between the critical state parameters obtained from the graphic method and that from the simulation analysis are less than 10%, which proves the accuracy of the CFSCs. The FOSs obtained by the proposed definition are compared with those obtained by the Bishop simplified method and the local linearization method (LLM), and the results are very close. The relative error is less than ± 5% compared with the LLM, and the stability state predicted is perfectly accurate. However, the calculation procedure is largely simplified, and the calculation speed is largely improved. A practical case of an open pit limestone slope with multiple steps was detailed analysed by the proposed SRM based on CFSC. The FOS results comparison with other existing method has demonstrated its feasibility and reliability in engineering application.

A New Discrete Form of Hoek–Brown Criterion and Its Application to Limit Equilibrium Analysis of Rock Slope Stability

Abstract:The generalized Hoek–Brown criterion (GHB) is recognized as one of the standard failure criteria in rock engineering and its validity extends to a wide range of rock mass quality. A drawback of this criterion is the difficulty of transforming it into an explicit form defining the Mohr failure envelope when its strength parameter is not equal to 0.5. The information on the functional form of the Mohr envelope for the full range of rock mass conditions enables the implementation of classical engineering approaches, such as the limit equilibrium method and limit analysis, in the framework of the GHB criterion. Knowing that for the exact closed-form representation of the Mohr envelope is not feasible, an alternative is to express it in an approximate analytical form. The main purpose of this study is to propose a new improved method to define an approximate Mohr envelope of the GHB criterion that is much more accurate compared with the recently published approximations. The idea behind the formulation is to expand the Balmer's equation, which defines the relationship between the normal stress and minor principal stress at failure, by invoking the finite Taylor series centered at the known solution for . The formulation is then completed by substituting this solution into another Balmer's equation, defining the relationship between the shear strength and the minor principal stress. The Taylor polynomial approximations of up to third degree are considered in the formulation. The accuracy of the shear strength prediction is shown to be much better than that of the approximate formula of Lee and Pietruszczak proposed in 2021. An illustrative example of limit equilibrium analysis of rock slope stability, incorporating the new approximate expression for the Mohr envelope, is provided. The analysis incorporates a modified version of the Bishop approach, which is simpler and more rigorous than the original nonlinear expression. The study confirms that the new approximate representation of the Mohr failure envelope can facilitate the application of the GHB criterion to a range of practical rock engineering calculations.

Abstract:Stability of slopes is a very serious issue in the field of geotechnical engineering. The analysis and design of failing slopes requires a thorough knowledge of the failure mechanism in order to choose the right slope stability analysis method. The two-dimensional (2D) slope stability methods are very common to the engineers because of the simplicity in their assumptions. As a result the analysis results vary greatly between the different analysis methods. The importance of three-dimensional (3D) slope stability analysis greatly increased where the geometry of the problem becomes complex which makes it very difficult to solve using 2D analysis. A lot many 2D slope stability methods were extended to 3D methods since 1970s based on limit equilibrium (LE) and finite element approaches. In this paper, slopes were analysed using 3D limit equilibrium method (LEM) using SLIDE3 software having different geometry and soil parameters and finally stability charts were prepared to calculate the FOS of the slopes. It is found that the slope stability factor can be read from the stability charts without the need for iterations.

Abstract:Kinematic analysis is a widely used method to assess stability condition in jointed rock slopes and predict the modes of block detachments. However, consideration of kinematic failures as crisp values (e.g., 0 for failure otherwise 1) in the conventional analysis is a limit to the susceptibility quantification. This paper has introduced novel methods based on the adjustment factors of slope mass rating (SMR) to quantify kinematic susceptibility of planar, wedge, and topple failure modes in terms of percentage/indices. Manual calculation of SMR is tedious and time-consuming, particularly when a large number of joints are involved. Hence, a method has been devised for the quantitative determination of both kinematic susceptibility and SMR with the help of a computer application. A computer application named EasySMR has been developed to automate and ease the calculation process. The application can incorporate a large number of joint data to provide convenient numeral, graphical and pie-chart interpretation of the kinematic susceptibility and SMR results. The algorithm has been validated with the results of 35 rock slopes from the Himalayan region, India. A few case studies have been presented to demonstrate the functionality of the program and enhanced capabilities which enables rigorous and accurate analysis of rock slope stability.

Abstract:Earthquakes contribute to the failure of anti-dip bedding rock slopes (ABRSs) in seismically active regions. The pseudo-static method is commonly employed to assess the ABRSs stability. However, simplifying seismic effects as static loads often underestimates rock slope stability. The development of a practical stability analysis approach for ABRSs, particularly in slope engineering design, is imperative. This study proposes a stability evaluation model for ABRSs, incorporating the viscoelastic properties of rock, to quantitatively assess the safety factor and failure surface under seismic conditions. The mathematical description of the pseudo-dynamic method, derived in this study, accounts for the viscoelastic properties of ABRSs and integrates the Hoek–Brown failure criterion with the Kelvin-Voigt stress-strain relationship of rocks. Furthermore, to address concurrent translation-rotation failure in ABRSs, upper bound limit analysis is utilized to quantify the safety factor. Through a comparison with existing literature, the proposed method considers the effect of harmonic vibration on the stability of ABRSs. The obtained safety factor is lower than that of the quasi-static method, with the resulting percentage change exceeding 5%. The critical failure surface demonstrates superior positional accuracy compared to the Aydan and Adhikary basal planes, with minimal error observed between the physical model test and the numerical simulation test. The parameter sensitivity analysis reveals that the inclination of ABRSs exhibits the highest sensitivity (S k) value across the three levels of horizontal seismic coefficient (k h). The study aims to devise an expeditious calculation approach for assessing the stability of ABRSs during seismic events, intending to offer theoretical guidance for their stability analysis.

Abstract:The present study introduces "rock slope instability score (RSIS)" a novel classification system for assessing rock slope stability. It takes into account geological and geotechnical parameters, as well as the impact of human activities and triggering parameters, which have become more frequent due to climate change and few of them have been ignored in existing classifications. The study focuses on rock slopes of various lithologies from the Indian Himalayas. The development of this new classification system is based on the examination of 81 different rock slopes from various states of the Indian Himalayas. Extensive field surveys, rock sampling, geotechnical laboratory tests, and ground measurements have been conducted at the various slope sites to establish a comprehensive scoring system for the stability assessment. The distributions of weightage to each parameter have been considered, corresponding to its degree of impact in causing slope instability. Sensitivity analysis of all defined parameters of RSIS system has revealed that the majority of the parameters exhibit a strong positive correlation, with Pearson correlation coefficients ranging from 0.74 to 0.61. However, two parameters, namely discontinuity dip and the relationship between slope & discontinuity direction, gives moderate relationship with correlation coefficient values of 0.48 and 0.41, respectively. To avoid any designer biasness in the system, several individuals gathered data set at different times. The proposed classification system has demonstrated a strong correlation with the actual slope condition, and it is quite promising. The outcome of RSIS classification for studied 81 slopes classified 2 slopes under stable condition, 21 slopes as partially stable, 44 as unstable, and 14 as completely unstable.
