Abstract:Electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is a promising technology for combining CO2 reutilization and renewable electricity storage. For economic feasibility, better catalysts are required to overcome current limitations such as high overpotentials, poor faradaic efficiencies (FEs), and low current densities. Herein, size‐ and composition‐controlled gold (Au)–palladium (Pd) bimetallic alloy nanoparticles prepared by a metal vapor synthesis technique together with the monometallic Au and Pd equivalent materials are investigated. X‐ray diffraction and high‐angle annular dark‐field scanning transmission electron microscopy energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy analyses confirm the Au–Pd alloy formation with an average atomic ratio of 76 Pd wt% and 24 Au wt%. These bimetallic and the monometallic catalysts are characterized and tested for the electroreduction of CO2 in electrochemical cells and also in a complete CO2 electrolysis cell. Analysis of the reduction products shows a 100% CO2RR selectivity for CO. The FE for CO with respect to H2 as high as 90% is obtained with Au–Pd/C by tuning the electrode structure. The Au/C and Pd/C catalysts also show a better selectivity for CO with no evidence of other CO2RR products. The Au–Pd alloy formation improves the FE of Pd for CO by suppressing the parasitic H2 evolution reaction.
Exceptional Antisintering Gold Nanocatalyst for Diesel Exhaust Oxidation.

Abstract:The poor thermodynamic stability of gold nanoparticles (NPs) makes it very challenging to stabilize them in small sizes at elevated temperatures. Herein, we report the preparation of antisintering Au nanocatalyst by rationally selecting the sublattice matched MgGa2O4 spinel as support based on theoretical predictions. Au/MgGa2O4 retains Au NPs of 2-5 nm even after aging over the melting temperature of bulk gold (1064 degrees C)! By identifying the stable structure, the extraordinary stability is found to arise from the formation of a new phase structure, namely Au MgGa2O4 metal oxide "hetero-bicrystal" that remains as crystallite without melting even at 1100 degrees C. More than 80% of the loaded Au can be efficiently stabilized so that the catalysts can exhibit excellent low-temperature activities for diesel exhaust (CO and C3H6) oxidation after severely thermal and hydrothermal aging. These results may pave ways for constructing antisintering gold nanocatalysts for industrial applications.

Abstract:Supported gold nanocatalysts have been treated as extraordinarily effective catalysts in heterogeneous catalysis field. However, their poor thermodynamic stability in reactions at elevated temperature remains to be resolved for practical applications. The strong metal-support interaction (SMSI), a vital concept in chemical industry, can be applied to design catalysts and enhance their catalytic performances. Herein, we reported a sintering-resistant gold catalyst by anchoring Au nanoparticles at the interface between Fe2O3 and hydroxyapatite, in which one side of the Au nanoparticles was partially encapsulated while the other side was exposed. Owing to the strong metal-support interaction between Au and support, the resultant gold nanocatalyst was anti-sintering and presented remarkable activity and durability after calcination at 600 °C compared with commercial gold catalyst denoted as RR2Fe, providing a promising strategy to stabilize gold catalysts, especially for oxidation reactions at high temperature.

Preparation of Highly Active Silica-Supported Au Catalysts for Co Oxidation by A Solution-Based Technique

Abstract:Although Au catalysts can be readily prepared on titania via the deposition-precipitation (DP) method, the direct application of the method similar to the preparation of silica-supported Au catalysts only results in diminished success. This paper reports a novel, efficient method to synthesize highly active Au catalysts supported on mesoporous silica (SBA-15) through a gold cationic complex precursor [Au(en)(2)](3+) (en = ethylenediamine) via a wet chemical process. The gold cationic precursor was immobilized on negatively charged surfaces of silica by a unique DP method that makes use of the deprotonation reaction of ethylenediamine ligands. The resulting mesoporous catalyst has been demonstrated to be highly active for CO oxidation at room temperature and even below 273 K, the activity of which is much superior to that of silica-supported Au catalysts previously prepared by various solution techniques. The pH value of the gold precursor solution plays a key role in determining the catalytic activity through the regulation of [Au(en)(2)](3+) deprotonation reaction and the surface interaction of silica with the gold precursor. This mesoporous gold silica catalyst has also been shown to be highly resistant to sintering because of the stabilization of Au nanoparticles inside mesopores.

Abstract:The low thermal stability of gold-based catalysts is a significant obstacle to their practical application, especially under demanding conditions, such as those prevailing in automotive exhaust gas converters. In this work, we demonstrate that it is possible to strongly anchor 2–3 nm size gold nanoparticles inside the pores of SBA-15 mesoporous silica. The Au/SBA-15 catalyst showed high thermal stability, even at a temperature of 700–800 °C. The gold was evenly distributed inside the SBA-15 mesopores using the adsorption of the [Au(en) 2 ]Cl 3 complex (en = ethylenediamine) in an alkaline environment. Due to the very small size of gold nanoparticles, the obtained catalyst was highly active in low-temperature CO oxidation. The high resistance of Au particles to sintering can be explained by the confinement effect and the strong metal-support interaction, induced during the catalyst precursor decomposition under an oxygen-free atmosphere at 400 °C. The carbonaceous layer, formed from ethylenediamine ligands decomposition, plays an essential role in stabilizing gold nanoparticles inside the SBA-15 pores. We believe that our findings may contribute to solving the problem of carbon monoxide emission during engine start-up.

Abstract:Supported noble metal nanoparticles (including nanoclusters) are widely used in many industrial catalytic processes. While the finely dispersed nanostructures are highly active, they are usually thermodynamically unstable and tend to aggregate or sinter at elevated temperatures. This scenario is particularly true for supported nanogold catalysts because the gold nanostructures are easily sintered at high temperatures, under reaction conditions, or even during storage at ambient temperature. Here, we demonstrate that isolated Au single atoms dispersed on iron oxide nanocrystallites (Au1/FeOx) are much more sinteringresistant than Au nanostructures, and exhibit extremely high reaction stability for CO oxidation in a wide temperature range. Theoretical studies revealed that the positively charged and surface-anchored Au1 atoms with high valent states formed significant covalent metal-support interactions (CMSIs), thus providing the ultra-stability and remarkable catalytic performance. This work may provide insights and a new avenue for fabricating supported Au catalysts with ultra-high stability.

Abstract:Carbon materials were modified with MnOx via a novel self-limiting electroless deposition using KMnO4 as the precursor. Gold nanoparticles were loaded onto MnOx/C via deposition–precipitation. The resulting Au/MnOx/C showed higher catalytic activity in CO oxidation than Au/C, and the conversion was stable on stream. The performance of Au/MnOx/C was compared with that of Au/C, MnOx/C, MnOx/Au/C, Au/MnOx, and Au/MnOx/TiO2, and relevant characterization, applying XRD, BET, ICP-OES, SEM, TEM, and EDX, was conducted.

Abstract:Herein, we report novel gold catalysts made by dispersing Au@Fe2O3 core-shell structures on solid supports. In the synthesis of Au@Fe2O3 core-shell structures, dodecanethiol-capped gold nanoparticles were used as the seed and Fe(CO)(5) was used as the precursor to Fe2O3 shell. The Au@Fe2O3 core-shell particles were deposited onto SiO2 support to obtain Au@Fe2O3/SiO2 catalysts that were highly active for low-temperature CO oxidation. The catalytic activity was even higher than that of Au/SiO2 or Au/Fe2O3 prepared by colloidal deposition with comparable gold loadings. The influences of thermal pretreatment, shell thickness, and different supports (e. g., SiO2, TiO2, C, Fe2O3) were investigated, and relevant characterization using TG/DTG, XRD, TEM, HAADF, and EDX was conducted. The AuTiOx nanoparticles exhibited improved stability at elevated temperatures, which is attributed to a self-anchoring interaction with the TiO2 substrate. The structure of the AuTiOx nanoparticles was also investigated in detail using ion scattering spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The measurements showed that the alloyed nanoparticles exhibited a core-shell structure with an Au core surrounded by an AuTiOx shell. The structure of these alloy nanoparticles appeared stable even at temperatures up to 320 °C under reactive conditions, for more than 140 hours. The work presented confirms the possibility of tuning catalytic activity and stability via nanoparticle alloying and self-anchoring on TiO2 substrates, and highlights the importance of complementary characterization techniques to investigate and optimize nanoparticle catalyst designs of this nature.

Abstract:Supported Au nanoclusters are well-known for their unusual properties in catalysis. We describe here that nanostructured porous Au made via dealloying represents a new class of unsupported catalysts with extraordinary activities in important reactions such as CO oxidation. Although nanoporous Au may contain some oxides on the surface, our results demonstrate that it is metallic Au that plays the main role in this catalytic reaction. Furthermore, this material has good low-temperature catalytic stability and is extremely CO tolerant.

Abstract:Copper is one of the most efficient catalysts widely investigated in electrochemical CO 2 reduction, however, the further development of copper-based catalysts is constrained by severe stability problems. In this work, we developed a method for the synthesis of highly ordered CuAu intermetallic nanoalloys (o-CuAu) under mild conditions (< 250 °C), which can convert carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide with high selectivity and can operate stably for 160 h without current decay. The improved stability is believed to be due to the increased mixing enthalpy and stronger atomic interactions between Cu and Au atoms in the intermetallic nanoalloy. In addition, XPS results, Tafel slope and in situ IR spectroscopy demonstrate that high valence gold atoms on o-CuAu surface promote the reduction of CO 2 . In contrast, the disordered CuAu nanoalloy (d-CuAu) underwent atomic rearrangement to form a Cu-rich structure on the surface, leading to reduced stability. These findings may provide insight into the rational design of stable CO 2 RR electrocatalysts through proper structural engineering.

Abstract:The gold catalysts supported on various morphologies of α-Fe2O3 in carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation reaction have been studied for many researchers. However, how to improve the catalytic activity and thermal stability for CO oxidation is still important. In this work, an unusual morphology of α-Fe2O3 was prepared by hydrothermal method and gold nanoparticles were supported using a deposition-precipitation method. Au/α-Fe2O3 catalyst exhibited great activity for CO oxidation. The crystal structure and microstructure images of α-Fe2O3 were carried out by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the size of gold nanoparticles was determined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR) results confirmed that the state of gold was metallic. The 1.86% Au/α-Fe2O3 catalyst calcined at 300 °C had the best catalytic performance for CO oxidation reaction and the mechanism for CO oxidation reaction was also discussed. It is highly likely that the small size of gold nanoparticle, oxygen vacancies and active sites played the decisive roles in CO oxidation reaction.

Abstract:Charge transfer from the supports to nanoparticles at the interface is one of the key factors to determine the catalytic performances of supported nanoparticles. In this work, we showed in a systematic way that the charge transfer from semiconductor supports to Au nanoparticle catalysts can lower the onset temperature toward CO oxidation. For this study, a novel Au/SiO2/Si composite system synthesized by the helium droplet deposition method with precisely tuned SiO2 layer thickness was fabricated to control the magnitude of interfacial charge transfer. With the support of X- ray photoelectron spectroscopy and numerical simulations, it was demonstrated that the Schottky barrier formed across the Au/SiO2/Si heterojunction led to a negative charge accumulation on the surface of Au nanoparticles. In turn, this additional charge can be transferred to the anti-bonding orbital of adsorbed O-2 molecules to activate the O-O bonds, leading to enhanced CO oxidation. In addition to the charge transfer mechanism, the role of a strong electric field arising from the formation of the Schottky barrier was also explored to explain the observed enhancement of catalytic reactivity. Overall, this work highlights an important pathway for systematically tuning metal-support interactions to accelerate catalytic reactions and designing the next generation of nanocatalysts.

Abstract:Environmental pollution, especially air pollution, has become a critical issue requiring prompt resolution. Herein, we have synthesized a novel catalyst composed of nano-octahedral γ-Fe2O3 in situ loaded with Au nanoparticles through dealloying Al-Fe-Au alloy ribbons combined with calcination. The formation mechanism of this unique morphology was analyzed, and the catalyst's performance was evaluated through CO oxidation reactions. The test results indicate that the Au/γ-Fe2O3 catalyst can completely catalyze CO at 50 °C, and exhibits excellent stability and resistance to H2O and CO2 toxicity even under harsh testing conditions. Systematic characterization results reveal that the exceptional performance of the catalyst can be attributed to several key factors. These include the large specific surface area, well-defined nanoporous structure, efficient transfer of free electrons at the interface facilitated by the strong interactions between Au and the γ-Fe2O3 support, as well as the high concentration of oxygen vacancies and surface-active oxygen species present. Additionally, the potential conversion pathways of CO over the Au/γ-Fe2O3 catalyst were elucidated, revealing that they follow the Langmuir-Hinshelwood and Mars-van Krevelen mechanisms under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, respectively. This study is expected to provide novel insights into the green synthesis of highly active and stable nanoporous catalysts.

Abstract:Supported metal nanoparticle catalysts are widely used in industry but suffer from deactivation resulting from metal sintering and coke deposition at high reaction temperatures. Here, we show an efficient and general strategy for the preparation of supported metal nanoparticle catalysts with very high resistance to sintering by fixing the metal nanoparticles (platinum, palladium, rhodium and silver) with diameters in the range of industrial catalysts (0.8–3.6 nm) within zeolite crystals (metal@zeolite) by means of a controllable seed-directed growth technique. The resulting materials are sinter resistant at 600–700 °C, and the uniform zeolite micropores allow for the diffusion of reactants enabling contact with the metal nanoparticles. The metal@zeolite catalysts exhibit long reaction lifetimes, outperforming conventional supported metal catalysts and commercial catalysts consisting of metal nanoparticles on the surfaces of solid supports during the catalytic conversion of C1 molecules, including the water-gas shift reaction, CO oxidation, oxidative reforming of methane and CO2 hydrogenation.
