Abstract:Protection of metal nanoparticles from agglomeration is critical for their functions and applications. The conventional method for enhancing their stability is to cover them with passivation layers to prevent direct contact. However, the presence of a protective shell blocks exposure of the metal species to reactants, thereby significantly impeding the nanoparticles' utility as catalysts. Here, we report that metal nanoparticles can be prepared and used in a surface-exposed state that renders them inherently catalytically active. This strategy is realised by spatial confinement and electronic stabilisation with a dual-module mesoporous and microporous three-dimensional π-network in which surface-exposed nanoparticles are crystallised upon in situ reduction. The uncovered palladium nanoparticles serve as heterogeneous catalysts that are exceptionally active in water, catalyse unreactive aryl chlorides for straightforward carbon-carbon bond formation and are stable for repeated use in various types of cross couplings. Therefore, our results open new perspectives in developing practical heterogeneous catalysts.

Abstract:Interfacial local environment of noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) and support is crucial for the development and design of thermally and chemically stable noble metal heterogeneous catalysts. The unique chemical environment can strengthen the NPs interaction with the support surface, which can effectively avoid the agglomeration of NPs. The strategy is developed to modulate the interfacial chemical environment of supported Pt NPs with the help of the unsaturated Al3+ in Al2O3N (nanobelt) support, resulting in a sintering-resistant Pt/Al2O3N catalyst. Al solid-state MAS NMR characterization shows that Al2O3N support contains a large amount of unsaturated Alpenta3+ (about 22.6%). XAS confirms that Pt NPs deposited on the surface of Al2O3 with rich unsaturated pentahedral coordinated Al3+ sites have a unique coordination structure at the interface (more Pt-O coordination). When catalyzing the CO oxidation as a probe reaction, the catalytic activity and the particle sizes of Pt NPs do not change significantly even after the reaction at 400 °C for 15 days, and the complete CO conversion temperature increases only by 40 °C when the catalyst is screened at 600 °C for 5 days. This work demonstrates a new strategy to develop stable large-scale anti-sintering noble metal-based heterogeneous catalysts for many important high-temperature industrial applications.

Abstract:Colloidal metal nanocrystals with uniform sizes, shapes, compositions, and architectures are ideal building blocks for constructing heterogeneous catalysts with well-defined characteristics toward the investigation of accurate structure-property relationships and better understanding of catalytic mechanism. However, their applications in high-temperature heterogeneous catalysis are often restricted by the difficulty in maintaining the high metal dispersity and easy accessibility to active sites under harsh operating conditions. Here, a partial-oxide-coating strategy is proposed to stabilize metal nanocrystals against sintering and meanwhile enable an effective exposure of active sites. As a proof-of-concept, controlled partial silica coating of colloidally prepared Pd<sub>0.82</sub> Ni<sub>0.18</sub> nanocrystals with the size of 8 nm is demonstrated. This partially coated catalyst exhibits excellent activity, selectivity, and stability, outperforming its counterparts with fully coated and supported structures, in reverse water gas shift (RWGS) catalysis particularly at high operating temperatures. This study opens a new avenue for the exploration of colloidal metal nanocrystals in high-temperature heterogeneous catalysis.

Abstract:Single noble metal atoms and ultrafine metal clusters catalysts tend to sinter into aggregated particles at elevated temperatures, driven by the decrease of metal surface free energy. Herein, we report an unexpected phenomenon that noble metal nanoparticles (Pd, Pt, Au-NPs) can be transformed to thermally stable single atoms (Pd, Pt, Au-SAs) above 900 °C in an inert atmosphere. The atomic dispersion of metal single atoms was confirmed by aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and X-ray absorption fine structures. The dynamic process was recorded by in situ environmental transmission electron microscopy, which showed competing sintering and atomization processes during NP-to-SA conversion. Further, density functional theory calculations revealed that high-temperature NP-to-SA conversion was driven by the formation of the more thermodynamically stable Pd-N4 structure when mobile Pd atoms were captured on the defects of nitrogen-doped carbon. The thermally stable single atoms (Pd-SAs) exhibited even better activity and selectivity than nanoparticles (Pd-NPs) for semi-hydrogenation of acetylene.

Achieving nano-gold stability through rational design

Abstract:When Au is subdivided to the nanoscale its reactivity changes from an inert nature to one of incredible reactivity which is not replicated by other catalysts. When dispersed onto metal oxides such as TiO2, nano-Au has shown high reactivities for a multitude of reduction and oxidation reactions of industrial importance with potential and current uses such as, CO oxidation, NO x reduction, purification of hydrogen for fuel cells, water gas shift reactions, abatement of volatile organic compounds (VOC's) as well as pollution and emission control systems such as autocatalysts. However, many industrially important reactions and applications operate under harsh conditions where the catalyst is exposed to high temperatures and further needs to operate for extended periods of time. These conditions cause Au nanoparticle sintering whereby small, highly active clusters form large clusters which are catalytically inactive. For this reason, research into stabilizing Au nanoparticles has abounded with a goal of producing durable, thermally stable catalysts for industrial applications. Here we show a durable, thermally stable Au-TiO2 catalyst which has been developed by rational design. The catalyst exhibits a 3-dimensional, radially aligned nanorod structure, already locked into the thermodynamically stable polymorph, via a scalable and facile synthesis, with Au nanoparticles isolated on the support structure. As the Au nanoparticles are highly stable the new catalyst is able to maintain light-off for CO oxidation below 115 °C even after multiple cycles at 800 °C. This ability of the catalyst to resist multiple thermal cycles to high temperature while remaining active at low temperatures shows promise for various industrial applications. The thermal stability of the catalyst is investigated and characterized through morphological and structural studies.

Abstract:Sintering resistant noble metal nanoparticles are critical to the development of advanced catalysts with high activity and stability. Herein, we reported the construction of highly dispersed Pd nanoparticles loaded at the inner wall of ZrO2 hollow spheres (Pd@HS-ZrO2), which shows improved activity and thermal stability over references in the Pd-ZrO2 (catalyst-support) system. Even after 800 °C high temperature calcination, the Pd nanoparticles and ZrO2 hollow spheres did not undergo morphological changes. The Pd@HS-ZrO2 manifests batter catalytic activity and thermal stability than the counterpart Pd/ZrO2 catalysts. In comparison to Pd/ZrO2-800, Pd@ZrO2-800 exhibits a 25°C reduction in the temperature required for complete conversion of CO. The enhanced catalytic activity and thermal stability of Pd@HS-ZrO2 can be attributed to the nanoconfinement effect offered by the 10 nm wall thickness of the ZrO2 hollow spheres, which suppresses the coarsening of the Pd nanoparticles (active center for catalysis).

Since the catalytic properties of < 5 nm gold nanoparticles were first uncovered, optimizing their stability at elevated temperatures for CO oxidation has been a central theme. Here we report direct observations of improved stability of AuTiO x alloy nanoparticles for CO oxidation compared with pure Au nanoparticles on TiO 2 . The nanoparticles were synthesized using a magnetron sputtering, gas-phase aggregation cluster source, size-selected using a lateral time-of-flight mass filter and deposited onto TiO 2 -coated micro-reactors for thermocatalytic activity measurements of CO oxidation. The AuTiO x nanoparticles exhibited improved stability at elevated temperatures, which is attributed to a self-anchoring interaction with the TiO 2 substrate. The structure of the AuTiO x nanoparticles was also investigated in detail using Ion Scattering Spectroscopy, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, and Transmission Electron Microscopy. The measurements showed that the alloyed nanoparticles exhibited a core-shell structure with an Au core surrounded by an AuTiO x shell. The structure of these alloy nanoparticles appeared stable even at temperatures up to 320°C under reactive conditions, for more than 140 hours. The work presented confirms the possibility of tuning catalytic activity and stability via nanoparticle alloying and self-anchoring on TiO 2 substrates, and highlights the importance of complementary characterization techniques to investigate and optimize nanoparticle catalyst designs of this nature.

Abstract:Supported noble metal nanoparticles (including nanoclusters) are widely used in many industrial catalytic processes. While the finely dispersed nanostructures are highly active, they are usually thermodynamically unstable and tend to aggregate or sinter at elevated temperatures. This scenario is particularly true for supported nanogold catalysts because the gold nanostructures are easily sintered at high temperatures, under reaction conditions, or even during storage at ambient temperature. Here, we demonstrate that isolated Au single atoms dispersed on iron oxide nanocrystallites (Au1/FeOx) are much more sinteringresistant than Au nanostructures, and exhibit extremely high reaction stability for CO oxidation in a wide temperature range. Theoretical studies revealed that the positively charged and surface-anchored Au1 atoms with high valent states formed significant covalent metal-support interactions (CMSIs), thus providing the ultra-stability and remarkable catalytic performance. This work may provide insights and a new avenue for fabricating supported Au catalysts with ultra-high stability.

Abstract:Supported alloy catalysts play a pivotal role in many heterogeneous catalytic processes of socioeconomic and environmental importance. But the controlled synthesis of supported alloy nanoparticles with consistent composition and tight size distribution remains a challenging issue. Herein, a simple yet effective method for preparation of highly dispersed, homogeneously alloyed bimetallic nanoparticles on oxide supports is reported. This method is based on solid solution of metal cations in parent oxide and strong electrostatic adsorption of a secondary metal species onto the oxide surface. In the reductive annealing process, hydrogen spillover occurs from the surface metal with a higher reduction potential to the solute metal in solid solution, leading to metal exsolution and homogenous alloying of the metals on the oxide surface. The ceria-supported Ni-Pt alloy is chosen as a model catalyst and hydrazine monohydrate decomposition is chosen as a probe reaction to demonstrate this method, and particularly its advantages over the conventional impregnation and galvanic replacement methods. A systematic application of this method using different oxides and base-noble metal pairs further elucidates its applicability and generality.

Structural changes in noble metal nanoparticles during CO oxidation and their impact on catalyst activity

Abstract:Abstract The dynamical structure of a catalyst determines the availability of active sites on its surface. However, how nanoparticle (NP) catalysts re-structure under reaction conditions and how these changes associate with catalytic activity remains poorly understood. Using operando transmission electron microscopy, we show that Pd NPs exhibit reversible structural and activity changes during heating and cooling in mixed gas environments containing O 2 and CO. Below 400 °C, the NPs form flat low index facets and are inactive towards CO oxidation. Above 400 °C, the NPs become rounder, and conversion of CO to CO 2 increases significantly. This behavior reverses when the temperature is later reduced. Pt and Rh NPs under similar conditions do not exhibit such reversible transformations. We propose that adsorbed CO molecules suppress the activity of Pd NPs at lower temperatures by stabilizing low index facets and reducing the number of active sites. This hypothesis is supported by thermodynamic calculations.

Abstract:Highly monodisperse Cu- and Ag-based bimetallic noble metal nanocrystals (BNMNs) with diameter 2-7nm have been synthesized. The synthesis employs a successive reduction process by using inorganic metal salts as precursors at a low temperature (similar to 110 degrees C). HRTEM, XPS and XRD analytical techniques were applied for the structural analysis of BNMNs. Catalytic activity investigation (CO oxidation) over different supports (silicate nanotubes and CeO2 nanoparticles) shows that BNMNs have identical and even enhanced performance over pure noble metal nanocrystals with similar size and size distribution, which proves that these BNMNs can significantly reduce the amount and thus make full use of noble metals in catalysis.

Abstract:Noble metal/transition metal oxide interfaces are typically considered as highly active sites for most heterogeneous catalytic reactions and can effectively increase the utilization of noble metals. One of the challenges in such catalytic systems, particularly under high‐temperature reactions, is the lack of an effective strategy to stabilize the catalysts against sintering over time and maintain the metal/oxide interfaces. We developed a one‐pot facile strategy to embed the ultrafine Pt−Ni(O) nanoparticles (NPs) with dual interfaces (Pt−Ni−NiO) in a microporous silica shell to fabricate a high‐performance heterogeneous oxidation catalyst (assigned as Pt−Ni(O)@SiO2) for the first time. Owing to the ultra‐small size of the Pt−Ni(O) NPs and the confinement effect of the silica shell, the resulting Pt−Ni(O)@SiO2 catalyst exhibited enhanced performance for CO oxidation and toluene [one of the main volatile organic compounds, (VOCs)] total combustion. The effects of Pt−NiO, Pt−Ni−NiO, and Pt−Ni interfaces were also studied in detail. The results indicated that the Pt−NiO and Pt−Ni alloy dual interface have the improving effect for catalytic oxidation and reducing utilization of noble metals. The strategy developed in this work may represent a general approach in the rational design of other high‐performance catalysts combining the interface catalysis and physical confinement concept to improve the usage of the noble metals. Impacting the Surface Chemistry of NiAu by Immobilizing on MgO/N‐rich Nanoporous Carbon Heterostructures for Boosting Catalytic Activities

Abstract:Tuning the physical and chemical interaction between metal–metal′ (M‐M′) and metal–support is an ideal way to realize enhanced catalytic activity of metal nanoparticles (NPs). As a proof of concept, herein we report the fabrication of nickel‐gold (Ni‐Au) alloy nanoparticles attached to N‐doped nanoporous carbon (NPC) intervened with MgO (Ni73Au27@MgO‐NPC), achieved through the impregnation of metal precursors into Schiff‐base network polymer (SNP) framework along with Mg(OH)2 and pyrolysis at 800 °C in N2 atmosphere. With high stability and heterogeneity, the nickel rich Ni73Au27@MgO‐NPC exhibited higher catalytic activities with turnover frequencies of 29,272 h‐1 (hydrogenation of p‐nitrophenol), 93,843 h‐1 (degradation of methyl orange), and 2,218 h‐1 (epoxidation of stilbene). Enhanced catalytic activity is correlated to the synchronized electron density enhancement in Au, by Ni and MgO/N‐rich nanoporous carbon heterostructures, as evident from detailed X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopic studies.

Abstract:Ultra-thin cobalt oxide has been deposited on the Pt nanoparticles to enhance the metal nanoparticles thermal stability. The thickness of protective Co3O4 coating layer can be accurately controlled around 1nm via atomic layer deposition. The Pt catalytic activity towards CO oxidation has been investigated in a micro flow reactor. In contrast to alumina oxide coating, the cobalt oxide coated Pt nanoparticles has demonstrated lower conversion temperature than bare Pt nanoparticles. Moreover the coated Pt nanoparticles show good sintering resistance up to 700°C in atmosphere condition.

Abstract:Supported Au nanoclusters are well-known for their unusual properties in catalysis. We describe here that nanostructured porous Au made via dealloying represents a new class of unsupported catalysts with extraordinary activities in important reactions such as CO oxidation. Although nanoporous Au may contain some oxides on the surface, our results demonstrate that it is metallic Au that plays the main role in this catalytic reaction. Furthermore, this material has good low-temperature catalytic stability and is extremely CO tolerant.
Thermolysis Of Noble Metal Nanoparticles Into Electron-Rich Phosphorus-Coordinated Noble Metal Single Atoms At Low Temperature

Abstract:Noble metal single atoms coordinated with highly electronegative atoms, especially N and O, often suffer from an electron-deficient state or poor stability, greatly limiting their wide application in the field of catalysis. Herein we demonstrate a new PH3-promoted strategy for the effective transformation of noble metal nanoparticles (MNPs, M=Ru, Rh, Pd) at a low temperature (400 degrees C) into a class of thermally stabilized phosphorus-coordinated metal single atoms (MPSAs) on g-C3N4 nanosheets via the strong Lewis acid-base interaction between PH3 and the noble metal. Experimental work along with theoretical simulations confirm that the obtained Pd single atoms supported on g-C3N4 nanosheets exist in the form of PdP2 with a novel electron-rich feature, conceptionally different from the well-known single atoms with an electron-deficient state. As a result of this new electronic property, PdP2-loaded g-C3N4 nanosheets exhibit 4 times higher photocatalytic H-2 production activity than the state-of-art N-coordinated PdSAs supported on g-C3N4 nanosheets. This enhanced photocatalytic activity of phosphorus-coordinated metal single atoms with an electron-rich state was quite general, and also observed for other active noble metal single atom catalysts, such as Ru and Rh.

Abstract:With the advances in engine technology, the exhaust gas temperature of automobiles has further reduced, which in turn leads to an increase in the emissions of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HCs). In order to understand the influence of CeO2-based catalysts loaded with different noble metals on the catalytic oxidation activity of CO and HCs, this study constructed catalyst models of Ce0.875Zr0.125O2 (100) surfaces loaded with Pt, Pd, Ag, and Au. The electronic density and state density structures of the catalysts were analyzed, and the reaction energy barriers for CO oxidation and C3H6 dehydrogenation oxidation on the catalyst surfaces were also calculated. Furthermore, the activity sequences of the catalysts were explored. The results revealed that after loading Pt, Pd, Ag, and Au atoms onto the catalyst surfaces, these noble metal atoms exhibited strong interactions with the catalyst surfaces, and electron transfer occurred between the noble metal atoms and the catalyst surfaces. Loading with noble metals can enhance the catalytic activity of CO oxidation, but it has little effect on the dehydrogenation oxidation of C3H6. Of the different noble metals, loading with Pd exhibits the best catalytic activity for both CO and C3H6 oxidation. This study elucidated the influence of noble metal doping on the catalytic activity of catalysts at the molecular level, providing theoretical guidance for the design of a new generation of green and efficient catalysts.
