Abstract:Hardt and Negri's book Empire has caused a tremendous stir in the Western academic sphere,particularly in left thinkers,the paper argues that Empire is a grand narrative of postmodem revolution,because it contains two kinds resources of resistance from the tradition of post-structuralism and Marxism.In some extent,Empire has overcome some dilemmas of con- temporary left and Western Marxism has fallen into since the collapse of So- viet and eastern European socialist countries.This paper mainly discusses four concepts which author thinks are the most important in book:the concept of empire as a global political order,the concept"biopolitics"as a new theoretical paradigm,the concept"society of control"as a latest stage of capitalism,concept"immaterial labor"which contain the potential and possibilities of postmodern liberation.In the final part of paper,the author makes some critical comments to the book.

Abstract:Britain was an imperial power in the quarter-century before the outbreak of World War. Leaders expressed a sense of moral responsibility for ensuring competent and just rule for the nations of the Empire. At the same time, the fulfillment of this duty was a justification for the exercise of power itself, understood in ethical terms, and involved the preparation of a citizen of the Empire, both educated and shaped by universally accessible school education. The teaching of history, linked to the formation of the identity of the model citizen, has been subordinated to this preparation. The current article is an attempt at indicating the presence and purpose of historical threads in materials intended for the initial learning of reading.

Abstract:The study of the Holy Roman Empire, a medieval state on the territory of modern-day Germany and Central Europe, has attracted generations of qualitative economic historians and quantitative scholars from various fields. Its bordering position between Roman and Germanic legacies, its Carolingian inheritance, and the numerous small states emerging from 1150 onward, on the one hand, are suspected to have hindered market integration, and on the other, allowed states to compete. This has inspired many research questions around differences and communalities in culture, the origin of the state, the integration of good and financial markets, and technology inventions, such the printing press. While little is still known about the economy of the rural population, cities and their economic conditions have been extensively studied from the angles of economic geography, institutionalism, and for their influence on early human capital accumulation. The literature has stressed that Germany at this time cannot be seen as a closed economy, but only in the context of Europe and the wider world. Global events, such as the Black Death, and European particularities, such as the Catholic Church, never stopped at countries’ borders. As such, the literature provides an understanding for the prelude to radical changes, such as the Lutheran Reformation, religious wars, and the coming of the modern age with its economic innovations.

Abstract:Where does the state come from? Two canonical answers have been interstate wars and contracts between rulers and the ruled in the early modern period. New scholarship has pushed back the historical origins of the European state to the Middle Ages, and focused on domestic institutions such as parliaments, universities, the law, inheritance rules, and cities. It has left open questions of the causes of territorial fragmentation, the structural similarities in state administrations, and the policy preoccupations of the state. One answer is a powerful but neglected force in state formation: the medieval Church, which served as a rival for sovereignty, and a template for institutional innovations in court administrations, the law, and the formation of human capital. Church influence further helps to explain why territorial fragmentation in the Middle Ages persisted, why royal courts adopted similar administrative solutions, and why secular states remain concerned with morality and social discipline.

Abstract:Twenty-five years ago, publication of the landmark volume L’emporion (Bresson & Rouillard 1993) had a major impact on studies of the ancient Mediterranean. It marked one of the first attempts to focus attention systematically on the kinds of trade enclaves that ancient Greeks named “emporia” and to review the existing textual and archaeological evidence concerning these spaces of cross-cultural encounter and the roles they played in ancient economic systems and processes of colonial interaction. The questions, enigmas, and evidentiary lacunae revealed by that exploratory venture provoked a torrent of vigorous empirical research and theoretical debate, especially in the western Mediterranean, where programs of archaeological research on this theme became particularly active in France, Italy, and Spain. The current volume re-examines the phenomenon of the emporion in the light of this subsequent wealth of new studies and data. However, it also seeks to set the analysis within an expanded international and cross-disciplinary framework and to enlarge the audience for this discussion. The authors include scholars from France, Italy, Spain, and the United States, and from the fields of anthropology, archaeology, classics, and history.

Abstract:The Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation in its early modern shape (1495-1806) appears as an exemplary case for study. The Holy Roman Empire finally transformed into the association of the German 'nations'. Imperial law was composed of various legal norms, including customs, privileges, treaties, ius commune , public law, and imperial legislation. Since the 16th century the peculiar constitutional structure of the early-modern Empire and the diversity of imperial law, as well as the resulting ambivalences and collisions, influenced the development of jurisprudence and juristic discourses. The early modern Holy Roman Empire was characterised by an unique multi-layered legal system that provided a legal framework with essential legal norms and institutions imperial law, ius commune and Supreme Courts but also left legal spaces and various degrees of autonomy for the territorial and local levels. Abstract:In the 1980s, Historical Sociology and Philosophy turned to the subject of Empire, based on new premises. The Empire is no longer understood by many researchers as a vestige of the political reality of the past. They began to interpret it as a mechanism for transforming chaos into order, connecting the civilizational periphery to the ‘future’, which is controlled by the center of civilization. The metaphor of the ‘eternal return’ became a popular way of describing the phenomenon of Empire. At the same time, this interpretation of Empire somewhat simplifies this phenomenon, adjusting it to the realities of the modern world with its globalist tendencies and centers of power (the U.S.A., the European Union), which provide these tendencies. At the same time, the idea of the nation-state has become an instrument for destruction of empires of a different, non-modern type, in order to integrate them into the order of the global future. Long before the realities of the European Union, K. Leontiev predicted that nationalism would become a prologue to the homogenization of human beings and their culture. Contrary to the ‘arithmetic equality’ of Western civilization, states of the ‘old’, pre-colonial imperial type, one of which Russia used to be and remains, in a sense, can offer a much more diverse landscape with a significant number of, in modern terms, ‘ecological niches’ for securing cultural identity. In Russian philosophy, the concept of an imperial-type state was the subject of very fruitful research, and this happened much earlier than the contemporary ‘imperial turn’ in Political Philosophy and Historical Sociology. The ideas of K. Leontiev convincingly demonstrate this. We believe that the most instructive are K. Leontiev’s ideas about the national state, as well as predictions of its future.

Abstract:The Ottoman Empire has long been a marginal subject in both the history and theory of international law. With the imperial turn in historiography and the postcolonial turn to history in legal studies, researchers challenge the stereotype of “the Sick Man of Europe,” paying due attention to the Ottomans’ own understanding of international law and society. Most importantly, throughout its centuries-long existence, the Ottoman Empire did not find itself vis-à-vis a monolithic, stable, and ready-made set of rules and ideas we today refer to as international law. On the contrary, interactions with the Ottomans—the Other par excellence for Christian Europe—helped transform droit public européen into modern international law. Neither the Islamic nor the Christian precepts predetermined this course of events. “Islamic” explanation was of little help in understanding the Ottomans’ relationship with the European powers. Notwithstanding the Islamic ideal of Holy War, the Ottoman Empire was among the key actors in the European balance of power. In the 19th century, however, Europeans increasingly established discrimination against Muslim Ottomans as a rule in international law, rarely perceiving their desire to be a full member of international society. Overall, the Ottoman Empire offers a fresh perspective for a truly universal history of international law.

Abstract:Whatever else one can or cannot say about the Roman Empire, of one thing it is possible to be entirely definitive. There was nothing accidental about the existence of that empire. Empire was what Rome did. The Spanish Empire, by contrast, was entirely different. From the outset of the creation of what we now know as the modern state of Spain, its internal construction and external expansion was overwhelmingly accidental in design. The internal cohesion of the newly created sixteenth-century state was the product of dynastic marriages between families (and kingdoms) that had hitherto existed entirely apart. The subsequent and rapid transformation of that state into Europe’s largest and most belligerent power was the product of a seemingly endless series of dynastic accidents: of marriages made and marriages missed, of husbands unexpectedly dead, of princesses lost in childbirth, and of royal babies stillborn or (in one crucial case) deemed mentally ill.1 And the movement of this emerging European power onto the global stage was the unexpected product of parallel but unconnected processes of private enterprise by Spanish citizens (or, of course, in the most famous case, by a first-generation immigrant son of Genoa). Though always sustained by its Catholic mission, the Spanish Empire came together initially by accident, not by design.

They were to be profound. The Roman Empire fell in the middle of the 5th century. The Christian religion became increasingly dominant in the west, not only in spiritual matters but also in every activity related to culture and learning. The Byzantine Empire became increasingly important in the east. Islam was founded and began to spread in competition with Christianity. Academic advances develop best in stable societies so that it is not surprising that this was not a period of new ideas. Galen had gained overwhelming authority. The most valuable work on surgery to be written during these times was Book VI of Paul of Ægina's encyclopedia.

Abstract:Analysis of the historiography of a particular historical period or problem allows one to say a lot not only about the topic of research, but also about the academic and political situation in which the works were prepared and published. For example, the tradition of studying the political history of Germany during the imperial period that emerged in Germany. The natural choice of topics on which most works concentrate (constitutional history, biography, history of political parties, parliamentarism, problems of authoritarianism and the theory of modernization) almost always concern the history of the German Empire, both by the majority, namely representatives of the Bielefeld school of social history and by their opponents, from the point of view of the collapse of the Empire in 1918. In the imperial period, there are tendencies, institutions, drivers that can be identified, the presence or absence of which predetermined the collapse of the Empire, made it natural and inevitable. The theory of the Sonderwegthese of German history initially interprets the “German case” as completely separate, standing apart from other states, both “progressive” Western and “backward” Eastern. This peculiarity and predetermination of the end, responsibility for which in various works is assigned to different, but always “conservative” forces, i.e. the monarchy, Wilhelm’s personal regime, the Junkers, Prussia, the Bundesrat, Catholics, etc., form the idea of the empire as anti-democratic in its nature, the tasks of which are hostile to the national and liberal movements, progressive at their core. This perception of their own past, which had a decisive influence on the historical consciousness of the Germans, became one of the factors of their deep understanding of the Anglo-American civilization as a standard one, and of their own history as something that must be overcome and not be repeated.

Abstract:In the context of politics in the contemporary world, the concepts of "empire" and "imperialism" are increasingly used. The study of imperialism becomes an important and urgent issue. We propose to consider the concept of "imperialism" as a notion and a phenomenon. The notion of "imperialism" was appeared in the second half of the XIX century. "Imperialism" was understood as "the desire of the state to expand its territorial (colonial) possessions, mainly in other parts of the world". The notion of "imperialism" was elaborated to define the dominant policy of the empire. Then this notion began to be used to refer to the policy of colonial empires. Through this concept has acquired independent features and later separated from the phenomenon of the empire. In the post-colonial world, we can talk about the imperialism of territories that are not empires; including scientist can speak about internal imperialism in the territory of one country. At the turn of the XIX and XX centuries “Imperialism” began to be understood as the equivalent of colonialism, including as the colonialism of maritime powers. This led to both basic provisions for understanding "imperialism": political and economic. The concept of "imperialism" has acquired a new meaning in the Marxist approach, where imperialism has become synonymous with capitalism. In Russian science, imperialism is more often understood as an economic phenomenon - the highest stage of capitalism with a negative connotation, and in West European and in American science it is understood as a political phenomenon - the desire of the country to expand its territory or zone of its influence. In the middle of the twentieth century, a new round of the concept of "imperialism" development began. In addition to political and economic meaning, the military and the cultural one have begun to be defined. Now scientists have a discussion about military imperialism and cultural imperialism. In addition to cultural imperialism, Galtung singled out communication imperialism, which has become increasingly intense due to actively developing globalization. After we observed the history of the concept of imperialism, we can conclude that due to the formulation of the contextual variables of the "imperialism" concept it is used in different historical contexts, and not only in relation to the colonial and post-colonial period. Today the notion of imperialism is filled with new meanings connected with the domination of the four most important aspects of interstate interaction: military, political, economic and cultural.

Abstract:The English School (ES) of International Relations is mainly associated with the idea of ‘international society’ defined as a group of states bound by a common set of rules in their relations with one another and sharing in the working of common institutions. However, the idea of ‘empire’ has posed some challenges to ES thinking. Consequently, some ES scholars have viewed ‘empire’ as a form of statehood and, therefore, as constituting one of the units in an international society. Some others have considered ‘empire’ as a form of an international society in itself while others have treated it as a form of a ‘world society’. Because the ideas of ‘international’ and ‘world society’ are associated with particular, norms, rules, practices, and policies, the present article aims at addressing this controversy within the ES and examining the political implications stemming from the various ES usages of the concept of ‘empire’.

Abstract:As historians and archeologists continue to debate the volume of commercial traffic in Western Europe following the disappearance of Roman imperial rule, it has become increasingly clear that an infrastructure of transportation and communication continued to facilitate travel and the movement of people in this period. This is particularly apparent in the Frankish Kingdom between the sixth and tenth centuries. Relying to a substantial degree on technology and routes inherited from the Roman past, the Franks employed this communication infrastructure for purposes dictated by entirely contemporary concerns. Recent scholarship has demonstrated conclusively that commerce was far from the only motivation for travel in the Frankish Kingdom, and that the diversity of means and motives for communication is indicative of a mobile society.

Empire and Liberty in Adam Ferguson’s Republicanism

Abstract:Adam Ferguson’s imperial thought casts new light on the age-old republican dilemma of the tension between empire and liberty. Generations of republican writers had been haunted by this issue as the decline of Rome proved that imperial expansion would eventually ruin the liberty of a state. Many eighteenth-century Scottish thinkers regarded this as an insoluble conundrum and thus became critics of empire. Ferguson shared their basic views but, paradoxically, was still able to defend the British Empire in the debates over the American Revolution. His argument effectively offered a viable solution to the republican dilemma, which distinguished him from his contemporaries. In light of this, I argue that political representation was the pivotal conception for Ferguson to make empire and liberty compatible. It was on this ground that he could advocate the union with Ireland, which he believed would lead to a lasting balance of power in Europe.

Abstract:Abstract The issue of how European images of the East were formed, used, and contested is far from simple. The concept of oriental despotism allowed early-modern Europeans to distinguish themselves from the most powerful and impressive non-European civilizations of the Ottoman Middle East, Persia, India, and China on grounds which were neither fundamentally religious nor linked to sheer scientific and technological progress, but political and moral. However, it would be incorrect to treat this as a pure European fantasy based on the uncritical application of a category inherited from Aristotle, because both the concept and its range of application were often hotly contested. By assessing the way travel accounts helped transform the concept from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment, this article argues that oriental despotism was not a mental scheme that blinded Europeans to the perception of the true Orient, but rather a compelling tool for interpreting information gathered about the Orient, one which served a common intellectual purpose despite important differences of opinion in Europe about the nature of royal power.

Abstract:Abstract This article traces the intertwining of contemporaneous Muslim and Christian millenarian beliefs and excitation from the early fifteenth to late sixteenth centuries, specifically as crystalized by the rise of the Ottoman power, the Muslim conquest of “Rome” (Constantinople) in 1453, and the sixteenth century Ottoman-Habsburg rivalry for recognition as legitimate claimants to the world empire of the last age of history. The most influential formulator of the Ottoman eschatological identity was the mystic and lettrist ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Bisṭāmī, whose works underlie the fully articulated royal messianism of Sultan Süleymān (r. 1520-1566). At Süleymān’s court the French orientalist and apocalyptic enthusiast Guillaume Postel, a proponent of French Valois universal end-time monarchy, saw al-Bisṭāmī’s work brandished in 1535. Following the trajectory of the production, consumption, and deployment of these texts in the context of revolutionary changes across the Mediterranean—not least of all in understandings of religions and their relationship to historical empire—makes clear the centrality of apocalyptic to contemporary understandings of history and the significance (and legitimacy) of the new imperial formations, and to new understandings of the interrelationship between cognate, if sometimes hostile, monotheisms.
