Abstract:The general practice workforce is currently in crisis. In 2021/2022, there was an estimated shortage of 4200 full-time equivalent, fully qualified, permanently employed GPs in England, with recent surveys suggesting that 71% of GPs in the UK find their job 'very' or 'extremely' stressful.1–3 And the near future looks to be potentially worse — the Royal College of General Practitioner's 2022 survey reports that 42% of GPs in England are likely to leave the profession in the next 5 years, and The Health Foundation predict that, without any policy action, there could be a one in two shortfall of GPs by 2030/2031.1,2 Here we discuss the NHS Long Term Workforce Plan for general practice and assess whether it can provide the policy solutions to mitigate this workforce crisis.4 The NHS Long Term Workforce Plan , published in June 2023, aims to address the workforce crisis by focusing on the following three domains: train, retain, and reform. It sets out a 15-year vision, with 2-yearly reviews.4 We have summarised those key general practice policies, as well as considering how to achieve them. The plan describes 'boosting primary and community care' , with greater focus on population health, prevention, and care closer to people's homes.4 This is a welcomed increase in workforce, with the majority of healthcare contacts occurring in primary care.5 ### Train The plan focuses on increasing primary care workforce as an overall proportion of staff. This is for all professional groups and in expanding emerging roles, which the plan categories under the 'reform' domain.
