Abstract:The resolution of reconstructed images is significantly limited by the size of captured holograms in digital holography. A multiplane digital holographic algorithm based on extrapolation iterations is proposed herein. Holograms at different axial distances are captured with a shifting imaging sensor and then extrapolated to a larger hologram after padding. Multiple holograms provide multipoint constraints in diffraction calculation. Constraints based on the energy distribution and transmissions of an object are applied to extract the object function from the holograms. The method achieves a higher convergence speed for solving the inverse problem compared with the single-plane extrapolation method. We demonstrate that the reconstruction in multiple planes yields a better resolution than that in one plane.

Single-exposure cepstrum phase-shifting in-line digital holography based on dual-CCD

Abstract:Limited by the property of charge-coupled device (CCD), the recording optical path of in-line digital holography is commonly used to take full advantage of the CCD sampling space, which is in order to improve the performance of digital holographic measurement. But the reconstructed image of in-line digital holography is overlapped by the direct wave and the conjugate image, which is hard to be separated. To achieve the real-time high-resolution measurement of in-line digital holography, the dual-CCD single-exposure cepstrum phase-shifting in-line digital holography is put forward, which is based on the single phase-shifting cepstrum technology. Then two key technical schemes of this technology, including the method of adjusting dual-CCD's mirroring overlapping position and the optical structure of dual-CCD single-exposure π/2 phase-shifting, are given. Finally, the experimental results show that, the dual-CCD single-exposure cepstrum phase-shifting in-line digital holography can solve the overlapping problem well. Moreover, the real-time recording and reconstruction of in-line digital holography are initially realized.

Abstract:A dual-plane in-line digital holographic imaging method incorporating volume holographic microscopy (VHM) is presented to reconstruct objects in a single shot while eliminating zero-order and twin-image diffracted waves. The proposed imaging method is configured such that information from different axial planes is acquired simultaneously using multiplexed volume holographic imaging gratings, as used in VHM, and recorded as in-line holograms where the corresponding reference beams are generated in the fashion of Gabor's in-line holography. Unlike conventional VHM, which can take axial intensity information only at focal depths, the proposed method digitally reconstructs objects at any axial position. Further, we demonstrate the proposed imaging technique's ability to effectively eliminate zero-order and twin images for single-shot three-dimensional object reconstruction.

Abstract:In this study, we propose a new method for single-shot, high-resolution lensless imaging called double-slit holography. This technique combines the properties of in-line and off-axis holography in one single-shot measurement using the simplest double-slit device: a plate with two apertures. In double-slit holography, a plane wave illuminates the two apertures giving rise to two spherical waves. While diffraction of one spherical wave from a sample positioned behind the first aperture (the object aperture) provides the object wave, the other spherical wave diffracted from the second (reference) aperture provides the reference wave. The resulting interference pattern in the far-field (hologram) combines the properties of an in-line (or Gabor-type) hologram and an off-axis hologram due to the added reference wave from the second aperture. Both the object and reference waves have the same intensity, which ensures high contrast of the hologram. Due to the off-axis scheme, the amplitude and phase distributions of the sample can be directly reconstructed from the hologram, and the twin image can be easily separated. Due to the object wave being the same as in-line holography with a spherical wave, imaging at different magnifications is similarly done by simply adjusting the aperture-to-sample distance. The resolution of the reconstructed object is given by the numerical aperture of the optical setup and the diameter of the reference aperture. It is shown both by theory and simulations that the resolution of the reconstructed object depends on the diameter of the reference wave aperture but does not depend on the diameter of the object aperture. Light optical proof-of-concept experiments are provided. The proposed method can be particularly practical for X-rays, where optical elements such as beam splitters are not available and conventional off-axis holography schemes cannot be realised.

Abstract:The 3D characterization of inclusions in a host droplet is of great interest in an academic sense and has wide industrial applications. In the framework of the generalized Huygens-Fresnel integral using a tensor ABCD matrix, a model is proposed to describe inline holography of inclusions inside a host droplet with misalignment caused by a tilt incidence of a laser beam. This model takes droplet morphology, inclusion position, as well as refractive index difference between a droplet and the surrounding medium into account and can be reduced to aligned inclusion holography. Typical behaviors of inclusion holography in both recorded holograms and reconstructed inclusion images are analyzed, including typical fringe features of hyperbola, single and dual systems of ellipse, and reconstructed elliptical images. This work extends inline particle holography to deal with misalignment and thus expands its applications in inclusion characterization in a host droplet. (C) 2017 Optical Society of America

Abstract:High resolution is always a pursuing target in the imaging field, as a new prospective technique in imaging applications, digital in-line holography has become a very active field for compactness, more information and low-cost. However, for compact system, the resolution is often limited by sensor pixel size. To overcome this problem, we propose an iterative reconstruction method with data interpolation based on the grating illumination. In our method, the Talbot self-image of a Ronchi grating is exerted in the sample plane as a priori constraint which lead to the convergence of the iteration, the iteration between the sample plane and the sensor plane can provide some extra information with interpolation in the sensor plane based on the a priori constraint, furthermore, the iteration reconstruction can also eliminates the twin-image to improve the image quality. Numerical simulation has been conducted to show the effectiveness of this method. In order to make a further verification, we have developed a lensless in-line holographic microscope with a compact and wide field-of-view design. In our setup, the sample was under the Talbot image illumination of the Ronchi grating, which was illuminated by a collimated laser beam, and holograms were recorded by a digital imaging sensor. We can shift the grating laterally to get a wide-field image. We demonstrated the resolution of our imaging system by using the USAF resolution target as a sample, and the results shown the resolution improvement of the image.
Digital Inline Holographic Reconstruction with Learned Sparsifying Transform

Abstract:We propose a digital inline holographic reconstruction method based on learned sparsifying transform. An iterative algorithm which includes the steps of updating background, phase, and image, as well as a step of sparse coding, is adopted to optimize the designed penalized least squares object function with regularization based on a sparsifying transform learned from sample images. A lensless inline holographic microscope (LIHM) was built and used to image a U.S. air force target and a pumpkin stem sample. The proposed method was applied to reconstruct the sample images. Compared with conventional holographic reconstruction method or the L1-norm-based penalized least squares reconstruction method, the imaging results show that the proposed method could better suppress the twin-image disturbance, staircase edges and block artifacts, thus enhance the reconstructed image quality.

Abstract:Single-shot and incoherent imaging are two important properties of digital holography that can extend its application range. In this study, a simple, compact, in-line Fresnel incoherent digital holographic recording system is proposed that is capable of single-shot and three-dimensional imaging. A geometric phase lens is used as the common-path beam splitter based on its special wave separation property. Parallel phase-shifting holography is used to achieve single-shot operation with the use of a polarization imaging camera together with space-division multiplexing. The capabilities of the proposed technique are experimentally confirmed by imaging two standard test charts based on a compact setup.

Abstract:Digital holography provides access to quantitative measurement of the entire complex field, which is indispensable for the investigation of wave-matter interactions. The emerging iterative phase retrieval approach enables to solve the inverse imaging problem only from the given intensity measurements and physical constraints. However, enforcing imprecise constraints limits the reconstruction accuracy and convergence speed. Here, we propose an advanced iterative phase retrieval framework for single-shot in-line digital holography that incorporates adaptive constraints, which achieves optimized convergence behavior, high-fidelity and twin-image-free reconstruction. In conjunction with morphological operations which can extract the object structure while eliminating the irrelevant part such as artifacts and noise, adaptive constraints allow the support region to be accurately estimated and automatically updated at each iteration. Numerical reconstruction of complex-valued objects and the capability of noise immunity are investigated. The improved reconstruction performance of this approach is experimentally validated. Such flexible and versatile framework has promising applications in biomedicine, X-ray coherent diffractive imaging and wavefront sensing.
Co-design of an in-line holographic microscope with enhanced axial resolution: selective filtering digital holography

Abstract:Common-path digital in-line holography is considered as a valuable 3D diagnostic techniques for a wide range of applications. This configuration is cost effective and relatively immune to variation in the experimental environment. Nevertheless, due to its common-path geometry, the signal to noise-ratio of the acquired hologram is weak as most of the detector (i.e. CCD/CMOS sensor) dynamics is occupied by the reference field signal, whose energy is orders of magnitude higher than the field scattered by the imaged object. As it is intrinsically impossible to modify the ratio of energy of reference to the object field, we propose a co-design approach (Optics/Data Processing) to tackle this issue. The reference to object field ratio is adjusted by adding a 4-f device to a conventional in-line holographic setup, making it possible to reduce the weight of the reference field while keeping the object field almost constant. Theoretical analysis of the Cràmer-Rao lower bounds of the corresponding imaging model illustrate the advantages of this approach. These lower bounds can be asymptotically reached using a parametric inverse problems reconstruction. This implementation results in a 60 % gain in axial localization accuracy (for of 100 $\mu$m diameter spherical objects) compared to a classical in-line holography setup .

Abstract:Holography is a powerful technique that records the amplitude and phase of an optical field simultaneously, enabling a variety of applications such as label-free biomedical analysis and coherent diffraction imaging. Holographic recording without a reference wave has been long pursued because it obviates the high experimental requirements of conventional interferometric methods. However, due to the ill-posed nature of the underlying phase retrieval problem, reference-free holographic imaging is faced with an inherent tradeoff between imaging fidelity and temporal resolution. Here, we propose a general computational framework, termed spatiotemporally regularized inversion (STRIVER), to achieve motion-resolved, reference-free holographic imaging with high fidelity. Specifically, STRIVER leverages signal priors in the spatiotemporal domain to jointly eliminate phase ambiguities and motion artifacts, and, when combined with diversity measurement schemes, produces a physically reliable, time-resolved holographic video from a series of intensity-only measurements. We experimentally demonstrate STRIVER in near-field ptychography, where dynamic holographic imaging of freely swimming paramecia is performed at a framerate-limited speed of 112 fps. The proposed method can be potentially extended to other measurement schemes, spectral regimes, and computational imaging modalities, pushing the temporal resolution toward higher limits.
Iterative Projection Meets Sparsity Regularization: Towards Practical Single-Shot Quantitative Phase Imaging with In-Line Holography

Abstract:Holography provides access to the optical phase. The emerging compressive phase retrieval approach can achieve in-line holographic imaging beyond the information-theoretic limit or even from a single shot by exploring the signal priors. However, iterative projection methods based on physical knowledge of the wavefield suffer from poor imaging quality, whereas the regularization techniques sacrifice robustness for fidelity. In this work, we present a unified compressive phase retrieval framework for in-line holography that encapsulates the unique advantages of both physical constraints and sparsity priors. In particular, a constrained complex total variation (CCTV) regularizer is introduced that explores the well-known absorption and support constraints together with sparsity in the gradient domain, enabling practical high-quality in-line holographic imaging from a single intensity image. We developed efficient solvers based on the proximal gradient method for the non-smooth regularized inverse problem and the corresponding denoising subproblem. Theoretical analyses further guarantee the convergence of the algorithms with prespecified parameters, obviating the need for manual parameter tuning. As both simulated and optical experiments demonstrate, the proposed CCTV model can characterize complex natural scenes while utilizing physically tractable constraints for quality enhancement. This new compressive phase retrieval approach can be extended, with minor adjustments, to various imaging configurations, sparsifying operators, and physical knowledge. It may cast new light on both theoretical and empirical studies.

Abstract:Holographic near-eye displays offer unprecedented capabilities for virtual and augmented reality systems, including perceptually important focus cues. Although artificial intelligence--driven algorithms for computer-generated holography (CGH) have recently made much progress in improving the image quality and synthesis efficiency of holograms, these algorithms are not directly applicable to emerging phase-only spatial light modulators (SLM) that are extremely fast but offer phase control with very limited precision. The speed of these SLMs offers time multiplexing capabilities, essentially enabling partially-coherent holographic display modes. Here we report advances in camera-calibrated wave propagation models for these types of holographic near-eye displays and we develop a CGH framework that robustly optimizes the heavily quantized phase patterns of fast SLMs. Our framework is flexible in supporting runtime supervision with different types of content, including 2D and 2.5D RGBD images, 3D focal stacks, and 4D light fields. Using our framework, we demonstrate state-of-the-art results for all of these scenarios in simulation and experiment.
A Compact and Lensless Digital Holographic Microscope Setup

Abstract:We design a holographic system which is lensless and compact. There is a beam expander in conventional holographic setup to produce parallel light and then with a beam splitter to separate the light into two parts. One is used to illuminate the objects and the other one as the reference light. In our system, instead of utilizing beam expander to generalize parallel beam, the laser is directly produced by a fiber, which provides a spherical wave with a center in the out port of fiber. For this reason, our system contains less optical components so that the setup would be more compact. The only needed processing is to eliminate the second-order aberration caused by different distance between two path and the off-axis to a small extent. An experiment of aberration compensation by using principle component analysis is given, and the result shows that the system works well.
