Abstract:Limited by the property of charge-coupled device (CCD), the recording optical path of in-line digital holography is commonly used to take full advantage of the CCD sampling space, which is in order to improve the performance of digital holographic measurement. But the reconstructed image of in-line digital holography is overlapped by the direct wave and the conjugate image, which is hard to be separated. To achieve the real-time high-resolution measurement of in-line digital holography, the dual-CCD single-exposure cepstrum phase-shifting in-line digital holography is put forward, which is based on the single phase-shifting cepstrum technology. Then two key technical schemes of this technology, including the method of adjusting dual-CCD's mirroring overlapping position and the optical structure of dual-CCD single-exposure π/2 phase-shifting, are given. Finally, the experimental results show that, the dual-CCD single-exposure cepstrum phase-shifting in-line digital holography can solve the overlapping problem well. Moreover, the real-time recording and reconstruction of in-line digital holography are initially realized.
Low Noisy Dual Wavelength Digital Holography and Application in the Ultra-precision Machining Surface Measurement

Abstract:Through the subtraction of two digital holographic wrapped phases for different wavelengths, it yields a beat phase image corresponding to an equivalent wavelength to remove the phase wrapping. By comparing the beat phase image with any recoding wavelength, the position and multiple of the single wavelength phase jump are confirmed. Hence, the wrapped phase in single wavelength phase is wrapped and the phase noise is kept fixed. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate the measure error induced by the phase noise can be reduced to 2Λ/λm. An optical microstructure element surface is measured by the proposed digital holography with dual wavelength of 650 nm and 632.8 nm. The measured optical element is produced with Fast Tool Servo (FTS). The unwrapped phase image of machining mark on the surface of microstructure element is acquired clearly. The equivalent wavelength is 0.024 mm. Then, the three dimensional data of the microstructure profile respectively in high frequency and low frequency regions are obtained by frequency filtering. The roughnesses corresponding to different frequency region are 33.2 nm, 19.3 nm and 23.4 nm respectively. The affecting factors for different machining mark are analyzed. The cutting parameters of the FTS are also deduced.
Hybrid Digital Holographic Imaging System for Three-Dimensional Dense Particle Field Measurement

Abstract:To apply digital holography to the measurement of three-dimensional dense particle fields in large facilities, we have developed a hybrid digital holographic particle-imaging system. The technique combines the advantages of off-axis (side) scattering in suppressing speckle noise and on-axis (in-line) recording in lowering the digital sensor resolution requirement. A camera lens is attached to the digital sensor to compensate for the weak object wave from side scattering over a large recording distance. A simple numerical reconstruction algorithm is developed for holograms recorded with a lens without requiring complex and impractical mathematical corrections. We analyze the effect of image sensor resolution and off-axis angle on system performance and quantify the particle positioning accuracy of the system. The holographic system is successfully applied to the study of inertial particle clustering in isotropic turbulence.

Double-slit holography—a single-shot lensless imaging technique

Abstract:In this study, we propose a new method for single-shot, high-resolution lensless imaging called double-slit holography. This technique combines the properties of in-line and off-axis holography in one single-shot measurement using the simplest double-slit device: a plate with two apertures. In double-slit holography, a plane wave illuminates the two apertures giving rise to two spherical waves. While diffraction of one spherical wave from a sample positioned behind the first aperture (the object aperture) provides the object wave, the other spherical wave diffracted from the second (reference) aperture provides the reference wave. The resulting interference pattern in the far-field (hologram) combines the properties of an in-line (or Gabor-type) hologram and an off-axis hologram due to the added reference wave from the second aperture. Both the object and reference waves have the same intensity, which ensures high contrast of the hologram. Due to the off-axis scheme, the amplitude and phase distributions of the sample can be directly reconstructed from the hologram, and the twin image can be easily separated. Due to the object wave being the same as in-line holography with a spherical wave, imaging at different magnifications is similarly done by simply adjusting the aperture-to-sample distance. The resolution of the reconstructed object is given by the numerical aperture of the optical setup and the diameter of the reference aperture. It is shown both by theory and simulations that the resolution of the reconstructed object depends on the diameter of the reference wave aperture but does not depend on the diameter of the object aperture. Light optical proof-of-concept experiments are provided. The proposed method can be particularly practical for X-rays, where optical elements such as beam splitters are not available and conventional off-axis holography schemes cannot be realised.

Abstract:Single-shot and incoherent imaging are two important properties of digital holography that can extend its application range. In this study, a simple, compact, in-line Fresnel incoherent digital holographic recording system is proposed that is capable of single-shot and three-dimensional imaging. A geometric phase lens is used as the common-path beam splitter based on its special wave separation property. Parallel phase-shifting holography is used to achieve single-shot operation with the use of a polarization imaging camera together with space-division multiplexing. The capabilities of the proposed technique are experimentally confirmed by imaging two standard test charts based on a compact setup.

Abstract:To make full use of the spatial bandwidth product of imaging systems, grating based single-shot digital lens-free holography with spatial spectrum multiplexing is proposed. Multiple object waves are generated by a one-dimensional grating which is placed in near contact with the object to avoid the crosstalk among different diffraction orders during reconstruction. A multiplexed off-axis hologram is created by interference between the object waves and reference wave and captured by an image sensor in one shot. Multiple imaging areas corresponding to the captured object waves can be simultaneously retrieved during reconstruction, which is equivalent to increase the imaging area. A formula which guarantees accurate full FOV imaging without crosstalk or information loss is presented. The imaging experiments of a USAF resolution target are presented to demonstrate the feasibility of this method.

Abstract:Digital holography is a versatile three-dimensional imaging technique that has the ability to record the complex wave-front of an imaged object in two-dimensions and retrieve it in three-dimensions. Several technical challenges of digital holographic systems have been overcome by proposing single-shot acquisition and common-path configurations. However, the limited fiel-of-view (FOV) of digital holography is the most fundamental and technically challenging aspect of this technology. With this in mind, we have developed a digital holographic microscope (DHM) with a doubled FOV together with it leverages single-shot acquisition, common-path, and off-axis configuration and operates in the reflection mode. The double FOV is achieved by spatial frequency multiplexing of two different areas of the object beam by the use of a cube beam splitter. The common-path and off-axis configuration are obtained by employing a plate beam splitter just before the microscope objective. Several experiments are carried out, and the results are presented to demonstrate the validity and effectiveness of the proposed DHM for quantitative phase imaging of (semi) transparent and reflective objects. Based on the experimental results, the proposed microscope shows advanced performance in biomedical imaging as well as inspection of engineered surfaces with its simplicity, higher stability (temporal and mechanical), compactness, low cost, and most importantly double FOV capabilities.

Abstract:Digital holography (DH) is an important method for three-dimensional (3D) imaging since it allows for the recording and reconstruction of an object's amplitude and phase information. However, the field of view (FOV) of a DH system is typically restricted by the finite size of the pixel pitch of the digital image sensor. We proposed a new configuration of the DH system based on Fresnel's bi-mirror to achieve doubling the camera FOV of the existing off-axis DH system which leveraged single-shot acquisition and a common-path optical framework. The dual FOV was obtained by spatial frequency multiplexing corresponding to two different information-carrying beams from an object. Experimental evidence of the proposed dual FOV-DH system's viability was provided by imaging two different areas of the test object and an application to surface profilometry by measuring the step height of the resolution chart which showed excellent agreement with an optical profiler. Due to the simple configuration, the proposed system could find a wide range of applications, including in microscopy and optical metrology.

Abstract:<p>Two-wavelength digital holography (TWDH) can extend the unambiguous range of phase measurements. However, state-of-the-art TWDH is achieved either by using the on-axis or off-axis layout to create interference or by using a Bayer mosaic-filtered color CCD camera to record the hologram. This leads to a tradeoff among the acquisition rate, detector bandwidth, and measurement depth. To solve this issue, inspired by the slightly off-axis single-wavelength digital holography, a single-shot slightly off-axis TWDH is proposed by combining flipping and polarization-splitting modulation. The interferences are yielded by flipping the relative positions of the sample and reference beams of both wavelengths. Two holograms at each wavelength can be simultaneously recorded by a monochromatic CCD camera with the help of polarization-splitting modulation. After subtraction between the two holograms, a correlative filtering division algorithm is used to perform the phase reconstruction. Experimental validation was conducted by measuring step targets and alcohol evaporation.</p>

Abstract:Lensless digital holographic microscopy (LDHM) offers very large field-of-view label-free imaging crucial, e.g., in high-throughput particle tracking and biomedical examination of cells and tissues. Compact layouts promote point-of-case and out-of-laboratory applications. The LDHM, based on the Gabor in-line holographic principle, is inherently spoiled by the twin-image effect, which complicates the quantitative analysis of reconstructed phase and amplitude maps. Popular family of solutions consists of numerical methods, which tend to minimize twin-image upon iterative process based on data redundancy. Additional hologram recordings are needed, and final results heavily depend on the algorithmic parameters, however. In this contribution we present a novel single-shot experimental-numerical twin-image removal technique for LDHM. It leverages two-source off-axis hologram recording deploying simple fiber splitter. Additionally, we introduce a novel phase retrieval numerical algorithm specifically tailored to the acquired holograms, that provides twin-image-free reconstruction without compromising the resolution. We quantitatively and qualitatively verify proposed method employing phase test target and cheek cells biosample. The results demonstrate that the proposed technique enables low-cost, out-of-laboratory LDHM imaging with enhanced precision, achieved through the elimination of twin-image errors. This advancement opens new avenues for more accurate technical and biomedical imaging applications using LDHM, particularly in scenarios where cost-effective and portable imaging solutions are desired.

Abstract:We propose a holographic technique by which multiwavelength three-dimensional spatial information is obtained with both a single-shot exposure of a monochrome image sensor and an in-line holographic multiplexing scheme. We develop a specially designed monochrome image sensor with a wavelength-dependent phase-modulation array, which is used to obtain the holographic information required for the proposed technique. The proposed technique is applicable for not only laser holography but also spatially and temporally incoherent holography. Its validity is experimentally demonstrated by constructing a color-multiplexed fluorescence digital holographic microscope and a multicolor incoherent digital holography system with a white-light source.

Abstract:The lens phase provides useful information about the optical path length, from which other key parameters of a lens can be calculated. Yet, the traditional 2D detector-based phase measurement methods are always limited by the specific spectral response range. Here, phase detection of the physical lens is accomplished via a single-pixel detector. The digital micromirror device (DMD)-based common-path off-axis single-pixel (DCOS) wavefront imaging system is established. Benefiting from the advantages of single-pixel detectors, this method is anticipated to be applied in specialist bands. In this method, the wavefront of a target object is reconstructed quickly by Fourier fringe analysis (FFA) from a hologram, which is obtained by the normal SPI technique. Thus, the measuring speed is at least three times faster than that achieved by multi-step phase-shifting. The average relative errors between the measured value and the calibrated value of focal lengths for 1000-mm and 500-mm optical lenses are 0.254% and 0.982%, respectively. Our work provides a fast, simple, and cost-effective way for phase detection of optical lenses and further enlarges the application scope of single-pixel wavefront imaging.

Abstract:Lensless imaging is a technique that records diffraction patterns without using lenses and recovers the complex field of object via phase retrieval. Robust lensless phase retrieval process usually requires multiple measurements with defocus variation, transverse translation or angle-varied illumination. However, making such diverse measurements is time-consuming and limits the application of lensless setup for dynamic samples. In this paper, we propose a single-shot lensless imaging scheme via simultaneous multi-angle LED illumination. Diffraction patterns under multi-angle lights are recorded by different areas of the sensor within a single shot. An optimization algorithm is applied to utilize the single-shot measurement and retrieve the aliasing information for reconstruction. We first use numerical simulations to evaluate the proposed scheme quantitatively by comparisons with the multi-acquisition case. Then a proof-of-concept lensless setup is built to validate the method by imaging a resolution chart and biological samples, achieving ∼ 4.92 μm half-pitch resolution and ∼ 1.202mm2 field of view (FOV). We also discuss different design tradeoffs and present a 4-frame acquisition scheme (with ∼ 3.48 μm half-pitch resolution and ∼ 2.35 × 2.55 mm2 FOV) to show the flexibility of performance enhancement by capturing more measurements.

Abstract:While digital holographic imaging can record both light intensity and phase information, its photodetector resolution lags behind that of optical dry plates, often resulting in a compromise between resolution and field of view. To overcome this limitation, we present an imaging method that combines Kramers–Kronig relations with wavelength division multiplexing, enabling large-field digital holographic imaging without sacrificing resolution. We validate the effectiveness of this method through simulation and example experiment, and demonstrate successful expansion of the field of view by 3 times with three color lasers, while improving the resolution.
