Abstract:A multifunctional two-dimensional (2D) material is theoretically predicted based on systematic ab initio calculations and model simulations for the honeycomb lattice of endohedral fullerene W@C28 molecules. It has structural bistability, ferroelectricity, multiple magnetic phases, and excellent valley characters and can be easily functionalized by the proximity effect with magnetic isolators such as MnTiO3. Furthermore, we may also manipulate the valley Hall and spin transport properties by selectively switching a few W@C28 molecules to the metastable phase. These findings contribute to integrating different functions in a single 2D material for technological innovations.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials offer a promising platform for nanoscale spintronics and for exploration of novel physical phenomena. Here, we predict a diverse range of magnetic orders in cobalt-based 2D single septuple layers CoX2Y4, namely, CoBi2Te4, CoBi2Se2Te2, CoBi2Se4, and CoSb2Te4. Notably, CoBi2Te4 presents intrinsic non-collinear antiferromagnetism (AFM), while the others display collinear AFM. The emergence of AFM in all CoX2Y4 materials is attributed to the antiferromagnetic 90 degrees Co-Te(Se)-Co superexchange coupling. The origin of non-collinear/collinear orders lies in competing Heisenberg exchange interactions within the Co triangular lattice. A pivotal factor governing the non-collinear order of CoBi2Te4 is the vanishingly small ratio of exchange coupling between next-nearest neighbour Co and the nearest neighbour Co (J(2)/J(1) similar to 0.01). Furthermore, our investigation into strain effects on CoX2Y4 lattices demonstrates the tunability of the magnetic state of CoSb2Te4 from collinear to non-collinear. Our prediction of the unique non-collinear AFM in 2D suggests the potential for observing extraordinary magnetic phenomena in 2D, including non-collinear scattering and magnetic domain walls.
Metal-organic Frameworks: Possible New Two-Dimensional Magnetic and Topological materials

Abstract:Finding new two-dimensional (2D) materials with novel quantum properties is highly desirable for technological innovations. In this work, we studied a series of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with different metal cores and discovered various attractive properties, such as room-temperature magnetic ordering, strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, huge topological band gap (>200meV), and excellent spin-filtering performance. As many MOFs have been successfully synthesized in experiments, our results suggest realistic new 2D functional materials for the design of spintronic nanodevices.
Two-dimensional CoSe Structures: Intrinsic Magnetism, Nonsymmorphic Magnetic Nodal Line, and Antiferromagnetic Metal State

Abstract:The interplay between magnetism, band topology, and electronic correlation in low dimensions has been a fascinating subject of research. Here, we propose two-dimensional (2D) material systems which demonstrate such an interesting interplay. Based on first-principles calculations and structural search algorithms, we identify three lowest energy 2D CoSe structures, termed as the $\alpha$-, $\beta$-, and $\gamma$-CoSe. We show that $\alpha$- and $\gamma$-CoSe are ferromagnetic metals. They possess rich topological band features, including the nonsymmorphic magnetic nodal line, the magnetic Weyl point, and the magnetic Weyl loop. Remarkably, all these features are robust against spin-orbit coupling. Meanwhile, $\beta$-CoSe is a rare example of a 2D antiferromagnetic metal, which is related to a Fermi surface nesting feature for its three conduction band valleys. The possible phase transitions and the experimental aspects have been discussed.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors integrated with two or more functions are the cornerstone for constructing multifunctional nanodevices, but remain largely limited. Here, by tuning the spin state of organic linkers and the symmetry/topology of crystal lattice, we predict a class of unprecedented multifunctional semiconductors in 2D Cr(II) five-membered heterocyclic metal organic frameworks that simultaneously possess auxetic effect, room temperature ferrimagnetism, chiral ferroe-lectricity, electrically reversible spin polarization and topological nodal lines/points. Taking 2D Cr(TDZ)$_2$ (TDZ=1.2.5-thiadiazole) as an exemplification, the auxetic effect is produced by the anti-tetra-chiral lattice structure. The high temperature ferrimagnetism originates from the strong d-p direct magnetic exchange interaction between Cr cations and TDZ doublet radical anions. Meanwhile, the clockwise-counterclockwise alignment of TDZ' dipoles results in unique 2D chiral ferroelectricity with atomic-scale vortex-antivortex states. 2D Cr(TDZ)$_2$ is an intrinsic bipolar magnetic semiconductor where half-metallic conduction with switchable spin-polarization direction can be induced by applying a gate voltage. Besides, the symmetry of the little group C$_4$ of lattice structure endows 2D Cr(TDZ)$_2$ with topological nodal lines and a quadratic nodal point in the Brillouin zone near the Fermi level.

Abstract:We propose a new concept of a two-dimensional (2D) Dirac semiconductor which is characterized by the emergence of four-fold degenerate band crossings near the band edge, and provide a generic approach to realize this novel semiconductor in the community of material science. Based on the first-principle calculations and symmetry analysis, we discover recently synthesized triple-layer (TL) Bi2OS2 is such a 2D Dirac semiconductor that features a Dirac cone at the X/Y point, protected by a centrosymmetric nonsymmorphic space group. Due to the sandwich-like structure, each Dirac fermion in TL-Bi2OS2 can be regarded as a combination of two Weyl fermions with opposite chiralities, degenerate in momentum-energy space but separated in real space. Such a 2D Dirac semiconductor carries hidden layer-dependent helical spin textures. Moreover, novel topological phase transitions are flexibly achieved in TL-Bi2OS2: (i) a vertical electric field can drive it into the Weyl semiconductor with switchable spin polarization direction; (ii) an extensive strain is able to generate ferroelectric polarization and actuate it into the Weyl nodal ring around the X point and into another type of four-fold degenerate point at the Y point. Our work extends the Dirac fermion into semiconductor systems and provides a promising avenue to integrate spintronics and optoelectronics in topological materials.

Predictive design of two-dimensional electrides with tunable magnetic, topological, and superconducting properties

Abstract:Two-dimensional materials are of interest for their exotic properties, for example, superconductivity, and highly tunability. Focusing on phonon-mediating superconductivity, one would propose to promote critical temperature by substituting heavy elements by lighter ones, in order to increase Debye temperature. Following recent experimental progress in transition-metal nitrides and theoretically revealing W$_2$N$_3$ as a candidate for high-temperature superconductivity, we investigate the possibility of two-dimensional superconductivity through surface engineering on MoN$_2$. Using density functional theory calculation, we found multigap superconductivity at temperature up to 36K within anisotropic Eliashberg equation in passivated electride-like surfaces. We also demonstrate their possibility to sustain topological superconductivity with strong spin-orbital coupling.

Abstract:The development of two-dimensional (2D) materials has been experiencing a renaissance since the adventure of graphene. Layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are now playing increasingly important roles in both fundamental studies and technological applications due to their wide range of material properties from semiconductors, metals to superconductors. However, a material with fixed properties may not exhibit versatile applications. Due to the unique crystal structures, the physical and chemical properties of 2D TMDs can be effectively tuned through different strategies such as reducing dimensions, intercalation, heterostructure, alloying, and gating. With the flexible tuning of properties 2D TMDs become attractive candidates for a variety of applications including electronics, optoelectronics, catalysis, and energy.

Abstract:Spintronics is one of the most promising information technologies now, especially for nontrivial topological Dirac half-metal, which exhibits extraordinary electronic band and transport properties. In this work, we propose that 1<i>T</i>-CrO<sub>2</sub> nanosheet is mechanical stable, large spin-gap, and room temperature ferromagnetic Dirac half metal. It also exhibits a desirable giant magneto band structure effect, and when the spin direction is switched from in-plane to out-of-plane with a spin orbital coupling effect, it will exhibit nontrivial topological phase transition. The topological tunable electronic band property makes it a very promising two-dimensional nanosheet for spintronics.

Abstract:Topological spin configurations have been an intriguing topic due to the exotic transport properties and promising applications in spintronic devices. The discovery of two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials such as CrI3 provides new platforms for manipulating magnetic structures. Here, by first-principles calculations and Monte Carlo methods, we investigated the exchange interaction and magnetic states of 2D van der Waals ferromagnetic/ferroelectric heterostructure CrI3/In2Se3. By switching the polarization in the ferroelectric In2Se3 layer under an electric field and changing the interlayer distance between CrI3 and In2Se3 under pressure, four spin configurations, ferromagnetic states, topological domain wall skyrmions, topological bimerons, and stripe domains can be realized. These striking tunable magnetic states can be understood from the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and single-ion anisotropy parameters being modified by switching the polarization and changing the interlayer distance. Our results of controllable topological/non-topological spin states broaden the spin phenomena and potential of spintronic applications in van der Waals heterostructures.
Rational Design of Heteroanionic Two-Dimensional Materials with Emerging Topological, Magnetic, and Dielectric Properties.

Abstract:Designing and tuning the physical properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials at the atomic level are crucial to the development of 2D technologies. Here, we introduce heteroanions into metal-centered octahedral structural units of a 2D crystal breaking the Oh symmetry, together with the synergistic effect of anions' electrons and electronegativity, to realize ternary 2D materials with emerging topological, magnetic, and dielectric properties. Using an intrinsic heteroanionic van der Waals layered material, VOCl, as a prototype, 20 2D monolayers VXY (X = B, C, N, O, or F; Y = F, Cl, Br, or I) are obtained and investigated by means of first-principles calculations. The anion engineering in this family significantly reshapes the electronic properties of VOCl, leading to nonmagnetic topological insulators with nontrivial edge states in VCY, ferromagnetic half-semimetals with a nodal ring around the Fermi energy in VNY, and insulators with dielectric constants in VOY higher than that of h-BN. This work demonstrates the rationality and validity of the design strategy of multiple-anion engineering to achieve superior properties in the 2D monolayers with potential application in electronics and spintronics.

Designing Magnetic Topological van der Waals Heterostructure

Abstract:We demonstrate a new method of designing 2D functional magnetic topological heterostructure (HS) by exploiting the vdw heterostructure (vdw-HS) through combining 2D magnet CrI$_3$ and 2D materials (Ge/Sb) to realize new 2D topological system with nonzero Chern number (C=1) and chiral edge state. The nontrivial topology originates primarily from the CrI$_3$ layer while the non-magnetic element induces the charge transfer process and proximity enhanced spin-orbit coupling. Due to these unique properties, our topological magnetic vdw-HS overcomes the weak magnetization via proximity effect in previous designs since the magnetization and topology coexist in the same magnetic layer. Specifically, our systems of bilayer CrI$_3$/Sb and trilayer CrI$_3$/Sb/CrI$_3$ exhibit different topological ground state ranging from antiferromagnetic topological crystalline insulator (C$_M$= 2) to a QAHE. These nontrivial topological transition is shown to be switchable in a trilayer configuration due to the magnetic switching from antiferromagnetism to ferromangetism in the presence an external perpendicular electric field with value as small as 0.05 eV/A. Thus our study proposes a realistic system to design switchable magnetic topological device with electric field.

Graphendofullerene: a novel molecular two-dimensional ferromagnet

Abstract:Carbon chemistry has attracted a lot of attention by chemists, physicists and material scientists in the last decades. The recent discovery of graphullerene provides a promising platform for many applications due to its exceptional electronic properties and the possibility to host molecules or clusters inside the fullerene units. Herein, we introduce graphendofullerene, a novel molecular-based two-dimensional (2D) magnetic material formed by trimetallic nitrides clusters encapsulated on graphullerene. Through first-principles calculations, we demonstrate the successful incorporation of the molecules into the 2D network formed by C$_{80}$ fullerenes, which leads to a robust long-range ferromagnetic order with a Curie temperature (Tc) of 38 K. Additionally, we achieve a 45% increase in Tc by strain engineering. These findings open the way for a new family of molecular 2D magnets based on graphendofullerene for advanced technologies.

Coupling multi-space topologies in 2D ferromagnetic lattice

Abstract:Topology can manifest topological magnetism (e.g., skyrmion and bimeron) in real space and quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) state in momentum space, which have changed the modern conceptions of matter phase. While the topologies in different spaces are widely studied separately, their coexistence and coupling in single phase is seldomly explored. Here, we report a novel phenomenon that arises from the interaction of topological magnetism and band topology, the multi-space topology, in 2D ferromagnetic lattice. Based on continuum theory and tight-binding model, we reveal that the interconnection between skyrmion/bimeron and QAH state generates distinctive localized chiral bound states (CBSs). With moderating topological magnetism through magnetic field, the multi-space topologies accompanied with different CBSs can be reversed, facilitating the coupling of multi-space topologies. By performing firstprinciples and atomic spin model simulations, we further demonstrate such multi-space topologies and their coupling in monolayer Cr2NSb. These results represent an important step towards the development of multispace topological phenomena in 2D lattice.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) magnetism and nontrivial band topology are both areas of research that are currently receiving significant attention in the study of 2D materials. Recently, a novel class of materials has emerged, known as 2D magnetic topological materials, which elegantly combine 2D magnetism and nontrivial topology. This field has garnered increasing interest, especially due to the emergence of several novel magnetic topological states that have been generalized into the 2D scale. These states include antiferromagnetic topological insulators/semimetals, second-order topological insulators, and topological half-metals. Despite the rapid advancements in this emerging research field in recent years, there have been few comprehensive summaries of the state-of-the-art progress. Therefore, this review aims to provide a thorough analysis of current progress on 2D magnetic topological materials. We cover various 2D magnetic topological insulators, a range of 2D magnetic topological semimetals, and the novel 2D topological half-metals, systematically analyzing the basic topological theory, the course of development, the material realization, and potential applications. Finally, we discuss the challenges and prospects for 2D magnetic topological materials, highlighting the potential for future breakthroughs in this exciting field.

Abstract:Two-dimensional ferromagnetic (2D FM) half-metal holds great potential for quantum magnetoelectronics and spintronic devices. Here, using density functional calculations and magnetic pictures, we study the electronic structure and magnetic properties of the novel van der Waals (vdW) metal-organic framework (MOF), CrCl2(N2C4H4)2, i.e. CrCl2(pyrazine)2. Our results show that CrCl2(pyrazine)2 is a 2D FM half-metal, having a strong intralayer FM coupling but a much weak interlayer one due to the vdW spacing. Its spin-polarized conduction bands are formed by the pyrazine molecular orbitals and are polarized by the robust Cr3+ local spin = 3/2. These results agree with the recent experiments [Pedersen et al., Nature Chemistry, 2018, 10, 1056]. More interestingly, CrCl2(pyrazine)2 monolayer has a strong doping tunability of the FM half-metallicity, and the FM coupling would be significantly enhanced by electron doping. Our work highlights a vital role of the organic ligand and suggests that vdW MOF is also worth exploration for new 2D magnetic materials.

Abstract:To realize novel topological phases and to pursue potential applications in low-energy consumption spintronics, the study of magnetic topological materials is of great interest. Starting from the theory of nonmagnetic topological quantum chemistry [Bradlyn et al. , Nature 547 , 298 (2017)], we have obtained irreducible (co)representations and compatibility relations (CRs) in momentum space, and we constructed a complete list of magnetic band (co)representations (MBRs) in real space for other magnetic space groups (MSGs) with antiunitary symmetries (i.e.,type-III and type-IV MSGs). The results are consistent with the magnetic topological quantum chemistry [Elcoro et al. , Nat. Commun. 12 , 5965 (2021)]. Using the CRs and MBRs, we reproduce the symmetry-based classifications for MSGs, and we obtain a set of Fu-Kane-like formulas of symmetry indicators (SIs) in both spinless (bosonic) and spinful (fermionic) systems, which are implemented in an automatic code— TopMat —to diagnose topological magnetic materials. The magnetic topological materials, whose occupied states cannot be decomposed into a sum of MBRs, are consistent with nonzero SIs. Lastly, using our online code, we have performed spin-polarized calculations for magnetic compounds in the materials database, and we find many magnetic topological candidates. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.106.035150 ©2022 American Physical Society
