Abstract:Conscious experience, unconscious and non-conscious processes combine the whole mental life of human beings.Pathological observation offers us one of effective ways to explore human minds, in which we could compare the remarkable conscious and unconscious events happened on particular brain-damaged pa-tients.Goodale and Milner subtly observed the astonished phenomena on DF whose visual cortex was severely destroyed, and then they designed a series of precise experiments upon her conscious and unconscious behav-iors to explore the causal reasons between her behaviors and her brain.In The Visual Brain in Action and Sight Unseen, the co-writers, Goodale and Milner have been advancing the idea that the ventral perception stream and the dorsal action stream are two independent visual systems within the primate brain.Normally, the former offers us the conscious experience but we could not realize how the latter works, which guides our actions un-consciously.This theory is very helpful for us to understand the difference between consciousness and uncon-sciousness in the way of phenomenology, neuroscience and behaviors, and also it is a useful reference to the division of labor of consciousness and unconsciousness.

Abstract:Abstract This paper investigates representation of perception in the novel. While many critics have great interests in the conceptual level of consciousness, namely characters’ thoughts, they have paid little attention to the perceptual level of consciousness. Characters’ perceptions are important, as they often lead to their cognitive activities, making up their experiences described in narrative. The narrative technique for representing perception that has been studied is what is called represented perception : a narrative technique for rendering a character’s perceptions without explicitly indicating his/her act of perception. However, as in the case of thought representation, there are more ways to represent fictional perception according to the degree of mediacy. This paper suggests a linguistic paradigm for perception representation, examining more mediate and im-mediate ways of representing perception with some historical insights, and reveals the varied importance of perception in the history of the novel.
Distance Deception by Fragmented Objects: How Figures May Alter the Perceived Depth of the Background

Abstract:Illusory displacements in depth may be perceived in simple geometric configurations devoid of cues for spatial computation but also in real-world images where there is no shortage of information of this kind. Two of these different contexts drew the attention of vision scientists as sources of depth illusions: the Kanizsa square and the images of statues that Catalano's created with a part missing. Similar depth alterations occur in both cases: the portions of the background surrounded by "inducers" (pacmen or body parts) are perceived as coming to the foreground. These illusory effects appear more vivid and diverse in the real-world context leading to hypothesize an involvement of the figural complexity in the misperception. A check was carried out by testing the effects of the background articulation on the depth perception of the illusory Kanizsa square. It was confirmed that both background and inducers articulation enhance the phenomenon. A large set of Catalano's images was analyzed, looking for basic distorting sources along the torn contours. Several basic factors were found, but not enough to account for the complexity of this variegated, often paradoxical phenomenon.

Abstract:In many fictional narratives, the plot development exists in tension with a "covert progression" in the shape of a powerful hidden dynamic, which is essentially different from previously investigated deeper-level meanings and which complicates readers' response in a distinct way. The overt and covert progressions parallel each other throughout the text. The plot development in itself may be interpreted from various angles, and the parallel covert progression further complicates the picture in conveying contrastive or even opposing thematic significance, character images, and aesthetic values, thus arousing or having the potential to arouse more complicated response from readers. The ways the two kinds of dynamics interact with each other are diversified, ranging from harmonious complementation to drastic subversion. In those narratives containing such dual dynamics, readers paying attention only to the plot development-no matter how many angles critics try to approach it-will result in a partial or false picture of the thematic import, character images, and aesthetic values. Since Aristotle, investigations of narrative fiction have focused on the plot development. In order to uncover and to account for the "covert progression" and dual dynamics, we need to break free of the bondage of the long critical tradition and to extend or transform the relevant theoretical concepts and models not only in narratology, but also in stylistics and translation studies.

Abstract:Consciousness is the most precious function of brain; however, there is an explanatory gap between consciousness and matter, which is deemed to affect the scientific research on consciousness. We believe that a methodological trap commonly present in scientific research and the incompleteness of logic are the true reasons that affect the research on consciousness. Here, a novel logic tool, the non-identity law, was extracted from physics and applied into the analysis of the visual dynamics related to naturalistic observation of night-shot still life, whose methodological approach is consistent with Descartes' matter-body-mind approach, breaking free from the methodological trap of current research. We show that visual system, the representative sensory system, has a postponed, recurrent out-of-body projection pathway from brain to observed object, besides the well-known feedforward signaling pathway available in existing literature, suggesting that human possesses an instinct of not only subjectively imaging (brain-generated imagery) but also projecting the image back onto the original or a particular place according to the clue of the manipulated afferent messenger light pathway. This finding adds a key piece of puzzle to the visual system. The out-of-body projection, coupled with neural correlates of consciousness (NCC), bridges the gap between consciousness and matter. This study in a self-contained and systematic manner provides a foundation for understanding the subjectivity and intentionality of human consciousness from the angle of visual awareness as well as the isomorphic relationships between unknowable original, private experience, and shareable expression (recording, calculus and deduction), showing that consciousness is obedient to certain rules rather than being unruly. The result paves the way for scientific research on consciousness and facilitates the integration of humanities and natural science.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Starting from an interdisciplinary perspective of the concepts of body, perception, and technologies in the contemporary scene, this text will attempt to define the general aesthetic notion as bodyscape as an extension of the performer's perception. Through a survey of some key practices from the contemporary scene such as choreographic compositions by Myriam Gourfink, Isabelle Choinière, and the project of motion signature by Martine Époque and Denis Poulin, the impact of technologies on redefining the process of the performer's perception in the composition of the movement and the change of the notion of presence will be analysed. In this sense, a series of modifications that influence also the spectator's perception is presented. Therefore, the notion of empathy is discussed, and an attempt to find out how this applies in the context of a digital image of the body is made.

Abstract:Creating high-quality and realistic images is now possible thanks to the impressive advancements in image generation. A description in natural language of your desired output is all you need to obtain breathtaking results. However, as the use of generative models grows, so do concerns about the propagation of malicious content and misinformation. Consequently, the research community is actively working on the development of novel fake detection techniques, primarily focusing on low-level features and possible fingerprints left by generative models during the image generation process. In a different vein, in our work, we leverage human semantic knowledge to investigate the possibility of being included in frameworks of fake image detection. To achieve this, we collect a novel dataset of partially manipulated images using diffusion models and conduct an eye-tracking experiment to record the eye movements of different observers while viewing real and fake stimuli. A preliminary statistical analysis is conducted to explore the distinctive patterns in how humans perceive genuine and altered images. Statistical findings reveal that, when perceiving counterfeit samples, humans tend to focus on more confined regions of the image, in contrast to the more dispersed observational pattern observed when viewing genuine images.

Abstract:We discuss the two moments of human cognition, namely, apprehension (A), whereby a coherent perception emerges from the recruitment of neuronal groups, and judgment(B),that entails the comparison of two apprehensions acquired at different times, coded in a suitable language and retrieved by memory. (B) entails self-consciousness, in so far as the agent who expresses the judgment must be aware that the two apprehensions are submitted to his/her own scrutiny and that it is his/her task to extract a mutual relation. Since (B) lasts around 3 seconds, the semantic value of the pieces under comparison must be decided within that time. This implies a fast search of the memory contents. As a fact, exploring human subjects with sequences of simple words, we find evidence of a limited time window , corresponding to the memory retrieval of a linguistic item in order to match it with the next one in a text flow (be it literary, or musical,or figurative). While apprehension is globally explained as a Bayes inference, judgment tresults from an inverse Bayes inference. As a consequence, two hermeneutics emerge (called respectively circle and coil). The first one acts in a pre-assigned space of features. The second one provides the discovery of novel features, thus unveiling previously unknown aspects and hence representing the road to reality.

Abstract:Perception, sensation and re-action are central questions both in Psychology, Arts, Neurology and Physics. Some hundred years ago, believed to start with Wertheimer, researchers and artists tried to classify our human being "understanding" of Nature, in terms of \emph{Gestalt} principles. During same period \emph{Quantum} mechanics were developed by Schroedinger, Heisenberg, Dirac, Majorana and others. In this work we briefly summarize the basic concepts of these two approaches and try to combine them at a simplistic level. We show that, perception and sensation can be handled within electrical signal processing utilizing Fourier transformation, which finds its counter-part in quantum mechanics.

The Deepfakes to Come: A Turing Cop’s Nightmare

Abstract:In 1950, Turing proposed to answer the question “can machines think” by staging an “imitation game” where a hidden computer attempts to mislead a human interrogator into believing it is human. While the cybercrime of bots defrauding people by posing as Nigerian princes and lascivious e-girls indicates humans have been losing the Turing test for some time, this paper focuses on “deepfakes,” artificial neural nets generating realistic audio-visual simulations of public figures, as a variation on the imitation game. Deepfakes blur the lines between fact and fiction, making it possible for the mere fiction of a nuclear apocalypse to make itself real. Seeing oneself becoming another, doing and saying strange things as if demonically possessed, triggers a disillusionment of our sense of self as human cloning and sinister doppelgängers become a reality that’s open-source and free. Along with electronic club music, illicit drugs, movies like Ex Machina and the coming sex robots, the primarily pornographic deepfakes are how the aliens invade by hijacking human drives in the pursuit of a machinic desire. Contrary to the popular impression that deepfakes exemplify the post-truth phenomenon of fake news, they mark an anarchic, massively distributed anti-fascist resistance network capable of sabotaging centralized, authoritarian institutions’ hegemonic narratives. That the only realistic “solutions” for detecting deepfakes have been to build better machines capable of exposing them ultimately suggests that human judgment is soon to be discarded into the dustbin of history. From now on, only a machine can win the Turing test against another machine.
