Abstract:
Reducing the corrosion rate and improving the biocompatibility are the main challenges that impede the successful application of magnesium (Mg) and its alloy in clinical applications. Herein, we report a type of composite coating based on biocompatible dextran-caffeic acid (dextran-CA) and electroactive tetraaniline (TANi) for simultaneous improvement of cytocompatibility and corrosion resistance of Mg alloy. Specifically, dextran-CA was synthesized and co-assembled with TANi into composite nanoparticles, which were coated on AZ31 Mg alloy by electrophoretic deposition (EPD) and crosslinked under UV irradiation. Electrochemical analysis and in vitro degradation tests demonstrated that the corrosion rate of dextran-CA/TANi-coated Mg alloy significantly decreased owing to the dense coating as well as the addition of TANi. The composite coating also improved the cytocompatibility of Mg alloy as confirmed by in vitro cytotoxicity assays and cell adhesion tests. Results indicate that dextran-CA/TANi composite coatings can provide new opportunities for the clinical application of Mg alloy.
