Abstract:With the increasingly close cultural exchanges between China and the west, more foreigners show their interest and enthusiasm to Chinese culture. As the exhibition and educational institutions with cultural exchange functions, museums become their preferred visiting sites when they travel in China. In the process of spreading Chinese culture to the world, the translation of cultural relic texts in museum is an important part. This study collects hundreds of cases from exhibition introduction and cultural relic texts in the National Museum of China. Skopos Theory emphasized that translation should be oriented by target readers and the means of translation should be determined by the translation purposes, which is suitable to be applied in analysis of cultural relic texts. Under the guidance of Skopos Theory, the author classifies and analyzes the typical cases and puts forward four methods in the translation of cultural relic texts, including transliteration plus explanation, amplification, free Translation, omission.

Abstract:Museums play an important role in China’s communication with the world and demonstrate to some extent China’s soft power. As China further strengthens its international exchanges, more and more people hope to know China through its history and culture. However, due to the lingual and cultural distinctions, there are many unavoidable problems in translating Chinese relic texts (Source Text or ST) into English texts (Target Text or TT). As Eugene Nida said in his functional equivalence theory, the Target Reader’s (TR) comprehension and appreciation of the translation is significant. Therefore, in translating relic texts, attention should be paid to how the TR can understand and accept the content. This thesis aims at finding proper translation principles and methods by analyzing the translations of the relic texts in Hubei Provincial Museum from the perspective of the core concepts of functional equivalence theory. Through a study on the functional equivalence theory, the thesis finds three principles of translating relic texts: accuracy, readability and acceptability. An analysis of the relic texts of Hubei Provincial Museum has led to several translation methods including addition, omission, paraphrasing and rewriting, which help to achieve the functional equivalence of relic texts translation.

Abstract:Eco-translatology is based on the isomorphic metaphor of translation ecology and natural ecology. It is considered to be an interdisciplinary study between ecology and translatology, which conduct a holistic study of translation process from the perspective of ecology through the application of ecological rationality. Therefore, this theory has the characteristics of adaptive, scientific and universal in allusion to the text of Chinese cultural relics. The translation of cultural relics not only involves the conversion between two languages, but also shoulders the mission of transmitting cultural information. It is urgent to alleviate the relative untranslatability of turning Chinese culture-loaded words into English. Based on the transformation principles in terms of linguistic, cultural and communicative dimensions, this paper attempts to translate the cultural relics in the Ancient China exhibition hall of the National Museum of China, in order to construct feasible strategies and alleviate semantic loss and semantic ambiguity.

Abstract:In recent years, China’s tourism industry has continuously promoted economic development. Therefore, the translation of tourism commentary is becoming increasingly important. The museum’s English commentary translation plays an irreplaceable role as an important medium for disseminating cultural knowledge and informing foreign friends. However, we don’t think highly of the English commentary translation, there are many grammatical and general errors, which hinders foreigners from getting the correct and accurate information. Wrong English commentary is not only harmful for cultural transmission but also bad for expanding opening-up. Chinese English translations are rarely translated on the basis of theory, which hinders the development of theoretical studies on Chinese translation. This thesis mainly focuses on the research and analysis of the English commentary in the Chongzuo Zhuang Museum. And it researches and analyzes the English commentary translation from the perspective of Skopos teleology. And it will enrich domestic research on teleological translation theory.

Abstract:With the rapid development of science and technology, social change is rapid, and the level of human civilization has achieved a qualitative leap. Museum is an important carrier of cultural dissemination and plays an important role in society. More and more people pay attention to the importance of inheriting ancient culture. In order to promote traditional culture to a broader level, it is inevitable to publicize the local excellent traditional culture to overseas countries, and museums are a very good carrier. Among the many exhibitions and exhibits about Chinese culture in museums, the wonderful use of English translation of explanatory notes aims to maximize the cultural output. Taking the National Museum of China as an example, this paper analyzes how translation promotes folk culture from the perspective of Skopos Theory by analyzing the examples and combining the cultural and contemporary backgrounds with the three principles of Skopos Theory. This paper selects the English commentary in the special exhibition "Ancient Chinese Food Culture" of the National Museum of China as the research object. Specifically, it analyzes the application of the three principles of Skopos Theory in the English translation of the commentary. It is found that the translator usually adopts methods such as increasing or decreasing the translation method and adjusting the syntax and tense to show the main content of the translation to achieve the ultimate translation goal. Moreover, the overall translation activity is carried out with the core of being close to the thinking and reading habits of the English readers to realize the interaction of cross-cultural communication.

Abstract:Revolutionary tourist texts belong to tourist texts. Extensive research has been conducted at home and abroad on the translation of tourist texts. However, due to the differences in domestic and foreign tourists’ cultural backgrounds and the unique characteristics of revolutionary tourist texts, there is less research on the Chinese-English translation of revolutionary tourist texts. Taking the Chinese and English texts in the Museum of the War of Chinese People’s Resistance Against Japanese Aggression as examples, this paper explores the C-E translation strategies of revolutionary tourist texts based on text typology, aiming to provide a reference for translating such texts and promote the development of revolutionary tourism.

Abstract:Jinsha Site Museum, located in Chengdu, is a national first-class museum. The cultural relics in Jinsha Site Museum have distinct local and national features, and the publicity scripts can present visitors the historical inherent value. And the English version is an indispensable part for foreign tourists to travel to the ancient Shu kingdom. After analyzing, the English translation introduction boards of Jinsha Site Museum basically follow the three principles of Skopos theory. Most of them have faithfully converted the original meaning of the Chinese version at the language level, showing the original information of the exhibits in Jinsha Site Museum. However, some translations fail to meet the Skopos, coherence and fidelity rule. If some translations can be improved, the English translation of Jinsha Site Museum can better achieve the purpose of displaying the history and culture of Jinsha Kingdom to foreign tourists.

Abstract:As an important part of Chinese culture, the translation of Minnan culture into foreign languages is of great significance for people all over the world to understand China’s traditional culture. Taking the Chinese-English translation of Minnan culture as an example, this paper discusses the problems existing in the foreign translation of Minnan culture and the countermeasures. Bassnett’s cultural translation theory provides theoretical guidance for this paper, emphasizing that translation is not only the transformation of language, but also the transmission and exchange of cultural information. This paper first introduces Bassnett’s cultural translation theory, then analyzes the characteristics of Minnan culture and the challenges it faces in foreign translation, and then puts forward various translation methods of Minnan culture, including transliteration with annotations, literal translation with annotations, free translation with annotations etc. Finally, it looks forward to the development prospect of Minnan culture foreign translation and puts forward suggestions for future research.

Abstract:In traditional translation theory, mistranslation is either regarded as a yardstick of the translator's language ability or a proof of the translator's betrayal against the author. However, with the further development of translation studies, a reexamination of mistranslations in the translation history will reveal that those seemingly unsuccessful language transactions turn out to be the reconstructed afterlife of the texts encoded with the special cultural mission of the translator, a rewriting effective in specific historical periods. Targeted at the translation of English and American literature during 1949-1966 as well as the new translated editions since 1978, this paper, through a reexamination of mistranslations, discloses the cultural conflict and distortion between China and the West in this specific historical context; and the revised mistranslations after 1978 reflect a different cultural attitude of China towards other cultures which is more confident and tolerant.

Abstract:Tourism plays a significant role in the development of a city, thus, tourism translation through websites plays an irreplaceable role in promoting local cultural publicity. This paper aims to study ways to promote the dissemination of local culture through three parts: literature review, Analysis of website construction and translations of Ancient City Culture. It analyzes the current construction situation of Baoding’s related websites, pointsing out their current shortcomings, while putting forward various suggestions. In addition, from the perspective of translation, the defects in the translation content of current websites has been pointed out from three perspectives: historical stories and ancient literature, proper nouns, natural scene, and providing corresponding revised translations and methods and suggestions for the translation of this type of text.

Abstract:China’s historical sites, as significant carriers of histories, play a great role in promoting unique Chinese cultures and establishing China’s international image. Since international people-to-people exchanges rebounded, they have attracted quantities of tourists from abroad. Allusions of the historical sites are at the core to help foreigners know about history. Therefore, it is worthwhile exploring the translation of these allusions. This paper presents an investigation into the translation of tour allusions utilizing Skopos theory as the theoretical framework. Focusing on the Palace Museum as a case study, the research examines different strategies of translating allusions within touristic contexts. The research finds that literal translation, idiomatic translation, free translation, literal translation with annotation, and transliteration are frequently employed. Based on the analysis of various translation strategies targeted at practical examples, the author proposes that translators should convey cultural connotations and historical references as far as possible while guarantee the translation is suited to target readers’ expressions through the flexible utilization of different translation strategies, hopefully advancing cultural communication between China and foreign countries.

Abstract:This paper centers around exploring translating Chinese introductory texts into English concerning the intangible cultural heritage of Guangdong Province and Hainan Province. Based on analyzing the textual features of the Chinese texts, the paper puts forward the principles of two types of closeness and five Cs in terms of translating the original text that serves the informative and vocative functions. Then in accordance with the two translation principles, an integrated strategy has developed on the basis of alienation, adaptation and compensation for contextual and cultural default so as to render the source texts into perfect English. Specifically, with the guidance of the principles and the integrated strategy, this research focuses on how to translate text titles, sentences with unique culture-specific items and short passages by employing such methods as transliteration, transliteration plus literal translation, transliteration plus annotation, addition or supplement, interpretation, intra-text annotation, condensation, and substitution, etc. The integrated application of the strategies and methods does work to retain the original culture in the translated text, and on the other, makes the translated versions content-centered, culture-oriented, concise, clear and coherent both in form and in meaning, thus achieving the goal that the translated text should be closer to the cultural characteristics of the source text and closer to the thinking mode of target readers. It is hoped that this exploration will make contributions to the translation research into the texts in relation to the intangible cultural heritage of China.

Abstract:As China's red tourism continues to heat up, it not only attracts Chinese people to study, but also welcomes more foreign tourists in recent years. At this time, the English translation of public signs and publicity materials is prominent. Under this background, under the guidance of theories such as cross-cultural pragmatic English translation, a field survey was conducted on the current situation of English translation of major red tourist attractions in Hunan Province. Research shows: There are obvious grammatical errors, nonstandard pragmatics and cultural barriers in the English translation of Hunan red tourism culture. In view of the above problems, we should strengthen the training of foreign language translation talents for red tourism, and introduce relevant English translation standards to standardize them. In addition, it is necessary to establish the English translation corpus of Hunan red tourism culture. The problem of cultural English translation is to improve the translator's cross-cultural awareness and professional quality to achieve the best English translation effect.

Abstract:Red tourism, a special type of tourism with distinct Chinese characteristics, is an important indicator of Chinaʼs soft power. Red Tourism Translation (RTT) is a channel for China to introduce its red culture and provide foreigners with an understanding of Chinaʼs revolutionary history and traditions. Based on the fundamental principles of Reception Aesthetics such as horizon of expectation, aesthetic distance, semantic uncertainty and cultural gaps, this study analyzes cases and examines the cultural misunderstandings and mistranslations in English translation of the red tourism text in Mao Zedong Memorial Museum in Shaoshan, proposes a reader-centered model in RTT and argues that in RTT, the target readers should be comprehensively catered to at linguistic, cognitive, cultural and aesthetic levels. This model involves remaining faithful towards the original information, providing necessary background information, omitting redundant expressions, restructuring understandable aesthetic experience for the target readers, which will facilitate the smooth spread of Chinese red culture and realize the integrity, authenticity and uniqueness of its ethnic identity in this dissemination process.

Abstract:In todays era of rapid globalization, effective cross-cultural communication and precise translation work are more vital than ever. Cultural-loaded words, which carry the nuanced meaning to particular cultures, stand at the forefront of this cultural exchange. Shanghai is an international metropolis renowned for its abundant and diverse intangible cultural heritage. Given this rich tapestry of cultural treasures, the demand for an accurate and good translation is imperative. Ensuring that the essence of Shanghai's cultural heritage is accurately preserved and communicated across linguistic boundaries is therefore a crucial task in todays interconnected world. This paper delves into the challenges and strategies involved in translating the cultural-loaded words from Chinese into English within the context of Shanghais intangible cultural heritage. Taking the Functional Equivalence Theory as the theoretical framework, various translation methods including literal translation, transliteration, and free translation are examined in this research, emphasizing their effectiveness in preserving cultural meanings. Practical applications and challenges in translating terms with culturally nuanced terms are demonstrated by analyzing the case studies from the Illustrated Encyclopedia of Shanghai Intangible Cultural Heritage. This research not only highlights the significance of balancing cultural context and intelligibility in between source language (SL) and target language (TL), but also demonstrates the role of Functional Equivalence Theory as a vital tool for facilitating cultural exchange. In conclusion, the paper provides valuable insights into the complexities of translating cultural-loaded words and presents approaches for translating cultural-loaded words in Shanghais intangible cultural heritage.
