Abstract:Removal of low concentration sulfur dioxide (SO2) from gas mixture is of great significance in gas purification, but the selective recognition of SO2 from carbon dioxide (CO2) still remains a great challenge with low separation selectivity. Herein, we reported a highly-stable pillared-layer ultramicroporous material CPL-1-NH2 for efficient separation of SO2 and CO2 with benchmark IAST selectivity (485) in metal organic frameworks (MOFs). The high separation selectivity is attributed to the narrow channel with lined amino groups, which exhibits significantly higher affinity to SO2 than CO2. Even in the presence of CO2 and trace moisture, the dynamic SO2 capture performance is hardly affected, demonstrating its great promise for SO2 capture. Simulation studies were conducted to gain the deep insight into the microscopic adsorption behaviors of SO2 and CO2.

Abstract:The CO, sequestration is extremely urgent due to the growing greenhouse effect and the subsequent serious environmental crisis. The development of porous materials with a size-selective effect for CO2 from other molecules still remains a challenge, due to the difficulties to control pore size within 3-4 angstrom. Here, we proposed and designed a novel anion-pillared material (termed as ZU-66, ZU = Zhejiang University) embedded with "molecular rotors" toward the industrially relevant CO2/CH4 and CO2/N-2 separation. Interestingly, the temporarily fixed molecular rotors under the ambient condition afforded a size-selective channel for CO2 from CH4 and N-2. To our best knowledge, there were only a handful of examples achieving the molecular sieving between CO2 and CH4. Such a behavior endowed ZU-66 with high separation selectivity for both CO2/CH4 (136) and CO2/N-2 (355) and high CO2 capacity (4.56 mmol g(-1), 298 K, 1 bar). The actual breakthrough experiment further verified its great potential in both CO2/CH4 and CO2/N-2 separation. The specific adsorption behavior within ZU-66 was further revealed through the modeling calculation.

Abstract:Silicoaluminophosphate (SAPO) zeolites as one of the most important members of zeolitic materials, providing equally high adsorption capacity of CO 2 as aluminosilicate zeolites, can be used as promising candidate materials for selective adsorption and separation of CO 2 . In this work, desirable from both economic and environmental viewpoints, a green and cost-effective one step synthesis strategy of K-SAPO-34 zeolite was developed in a wholly inorganic system under hydrothermal conditions. The pure K-SAPO-34 crystals can be obtained in a wide range of initial gel compositions. The as-synthesized K-SAPO-34 has high proportion of framework Si (Si / (Si + Al + P) = 0.37) and framework charge density ((Al – P) / (Si + Al + P) = 0.36). Because the presence of silica islands in K-SAPO-34 framework leads to a decrease in the number of extra framework cations per unit cell, the K-SAPO-34 in this work has a high CO 2 adsorption capacity (64.1 cm 3 /g) than the conventional K-SAPO-34 prepared by ion-exchange (1.9 cm 3 /g). Moreover, the K-SAPO-34 in this work has a superior separation performance for CO 2 /N 2 and CO 2 /CH 4 .

Abstract:Hierarchical porous ZSM-5 (HP-ZSM-5) was constructed using organosilanes as the growth inhibitors for CO2 capture. The properties of adsorbents were characterized by X-ray diffraction, N-2 adsorption/desorption, scanning electron microscopy, temperature-programmed desorption of carbon dioxide, and Al-27 magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance. It was found that HP-ZSM-5 samples synthesized by organosilanes had a significant effect on the microstructure and morphology. CO, adsorption capacity of HP-ZSM-5 was up to 58.26 cm(3) g(-1) at 0 degrees C and 1 bar, significantly higher than that of the ZSM-5 sample. The effective improvement of CO2 adsorption performance mainly originated from the micro-/mesoporous composite structure and complex surface morphology, which can provide low -resistant pathways for CO2 through the porous network. Besides, in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was carried out to study the adsorption process on adsorbents, and the results indicated that a faster physical adsorption process was achieved as a result of the introduction of mesopores.

Abstract:The conversion of CO2 into high-value chemicals has drawn a great deal of consideration, of which the most ideal product is lower olefins. However, the modified Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) synthesis with CO as an intermediate shows poor selectivity for lower olefins. Here, a list of bifunctional catalysts consisting of SAPO-34 zeolites with adjustable silicon contents and In2O3/ZrO2 were synthesized. In the reaction process, CO2 is first hydrogenated to methanol over an In2O3/ZrO2 catalyst, and then the generated methanol rapidly diffuses to the adjacent zeolite catalyst to react to lower olefins. The selectivity of lower olefins (88.3%) and conversion rate of CO2 (23.3%) was achieved over In2O3/ZrO2 and SAPO-34-0.05 at 633 K, a gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 4500 ml center dot gcat(-1)center dot h(-1), and H-2/CO2/Ar = 3:1:1. The catalytic performance remained stable after 50 h of reaction. Characterization analysis showed that Si content affected the content of Bronsted acid sites (BAS) and morphology of SAPO-34, resulting in different distribution of reaction intermediates. Tetramethyl-benzenes, as important intermediate species, had a slower conversion rate on the SAPO-34 with low Si content and nanosheet morphology, which led to high lower olefins selectivity. Abstract:Selective adsorption of sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ) is an important clean technology for purification of exhaust gas from fossil fuel combustion. The widely applied zeolite-based adsorbents interact with SO 2 through weakly physical adsorption, resulting in low adsorption capacity and selectivity for SO 2 . Herein, a facile strategy that combines improving the textural property of zeolite and optimizing adsorption sites is developed for efficient and stable SO 2 adsorption. The micro-mesoporous silica microspheres (MS) with high specific surface area and well-defined pore structure are obtained through a micelle expander assisted soft-template method, which can facilitate the dispersion and exposure of designed adsorption sites-methylated polyethyleneimine (mPEI). Since the Lewis basic sites of N in mPEI can strongly interact with the π-receptor SO 2 , and the tertiary amine groups exhibit a weak attraction for CO 2 , the optimized MS supported mPEI adsorbent exhibits remarkable SO 2 adsorption performance (7.5 mmol/g), exceptionally high SO 2 /N 2 selectivity (16673) and SO 2 /CO 2 selectivity (551). Moreover, it presents an outstanding stability in the adsorption-regeneration test. This work sheds light on the design of high-performance organic-solid composite adsorbent for selective capture of SO 2 .

Abstract:Abstract Silicoaluminophosphate (SAPO) zeolites are well-known catalytic materials because of the mild acidity originating from the isolated SiO4 tetrahedra in their frameworks. Regulating the distribution of isolated SiO4 tetrahedra in SAPO zeolites is formidably challenging because SiO4 tetrahedra tend to agglomerate to form Si islands and the isolated SiO4 tetrahedra are difficult to determine using conventional characterization techniques. Here we synthesized Si-island-free SAPO-35 zeolites by using N-methylpiperidine as a new template, which exhibited excellent thermal stability compared to conventional SAPO-35 zeolites and a substantially improved methanol-to-olefins catalytic lifetime even comparable to that of commercial SAPO-34 zeolites. More strikingly, with the aid of high-throughput computations on 44 697 structure models combined with various state-of-the-art characterization techniques, for the first time, we reveal that the host–guest interactions between template molecules and SAPO frameworks determine the specific distributions of isolated SiO4 tetrahedra, which are responsible for the improvement in the chemical properties of zeolites. Our work provides an insight into the template-based regulation of isolated SiO4 tetrahedra in SAPO zeolites, which opens a new avenue in the discovery of promising zeolite catalysts with optimal SiO4 distribution.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) capture from hydrocarbons using low-energy adsorption separation techniques is a promising alternative to conventional low-temperature distillation, but limited by the shortness of low-cost and efficient physical adsorbent, especially for the direct acetylene (C 2 H 2 ) purification because of their very similar size and physiochemical properties. In this work, GIS zeolites with tunable Si/Al ratio were synthesized in an unusual acid co-hydrolysis route to enable the formation of large-sized primary particles, which greatly reduce the outside surface adsorption to enhance the sieving effect of 8-membered ring microchannels. The obtained GIS zeolites afforded high CO 2 uptake (3.5 mmol g - 1 and 128 cm 3 cm - 3 ) while negligible adsorption towards other gases including C 2 H 2 , N 2 , CH 4 , C 2 H 4 , and C 2 H 6 , showing the remarkable selective CO 2 adsorption from a CO 2 -C 2 H 2 (N 2 or CH 4 ) mixture with the CO 2 /C 2 H 2 (50/50 v / v ) selectivity up to 8.5 × 10 10 . Breakthrough experiments revealed the favorable dynamic separation behavior with better performance on the sample with the comparatively high Si/Al ratio of 3.1. The CO 2 adsorption at 195 K and structural refinement results demonstrated that the excellent separation performance was attributed to the less Na + ions inside the microchannels providing more inner space for the accommodation of guest molecules.

Abstract:BackgroundCobalt has a high polarizability and can form a high dispersion potential energy on the surface of zeolite, which is conductive to the capture of CO2.MethodsFor the first time, cobalt-silicon molecular sieves (CSMS) were synthesized by hydrothermal method using cobalt nitrate as the cobalt source and sodium silicate as the silica source without organic template.Significant findingsThe effects of pH values on the synthesis of molecular sieves were investigated, and the sample CSMS-12 which synthesized at pH = 12, showed the highest specific surface area and pore volume. The specific surface area (SBET) and Total volume (VTotal) of CSMS-12 are 452.8 m2·g−1 and 0.4 cm3·g−1, respectively. The result of adsorption test at 273 K and 100 kPa shows that CSMS-12 has the highest CO2 uptake (1.86 mmol·g−1), and the Dual-site Langmuir isotherm model fits well with the experimental result. CSMS-12 has excellent adsorption selectivity (123) of CO2/N2 calculated by IAST method. Furthermore, fixed-bed adsorption breakthrough experiments were carried out to investigate the performance of dynamic CO2/N2 and CO2/CH4 separation by CSMS-12 at different temperatures. The above results indicate that it can be applied to the separation of CO2 in flue gas and biogas.

Abstract:Amino-functionalized silica nanospheres with centrosymmetric radial mesopores were successfully prepared using the anionic surfactant N-lauroylsarcosine sodium (Sar-Na) as template and 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APMS) as co-structure directing agent. The template was efficiently removed by extraction either using a basic solution of monoethanol amine (MEA) in ethanol or an acetonitrile solution acidified with HCl. The synthesized mesoporous silica materials were characterized by the FT-IR, TG-DTA, XRD, N2 adsorption–desorption and TEM techniques. CO2 adsorption at 25°C was evaluated by a volumetric method, and CO2 desorption was studied by the TPD technique. The results indicate that, compared to the sorbent treated with acidic-acetonitrile, the sorbent treated with the MEA–ethanol solution has a much higher adsorption capacity towards CO2, exhibits a higher degree of reversibility in the adsorption process, and has a much higher CO2/N2 selectivity.
Hierarchical Sapo-34/18 Zeolite with Low Acid Site Density for Converting Methanol to Olefins

Abstract:The catalytic performance of a zeolite is largely determined by its framework topology, particle morphology and acidity. A hierarchical SAPO-34/18 zeolite with a low Si/Al ratio of 0.11-0.12 and well-ordered macropores was synthesized with the conventional hydrothermal method by just decreasing the Si content in the gel mixture, that is, the development of its hierarchical structure did not need the use of an extra template or post-processing demetallation. The hierarchical structure reduced the diffusion distance inside the zeolitic phase because the void space made it equivalent to being comprised of small zeolitic crystallites, which gave a catalytic performance akin to that of nanosized zeolite particles. Reactivity studies that used a thermogravimetry-GC combination that simultaneously measured coke in the zeolite in addition to the gaseous products from the methanol-to-olefins (MTO) process showed that the hierarchical structure and low acid site density resulted in a longer lifetime, lower selectivities to coke and propane and higher selectivities to propene and butene, that is, a better catalyst for the MTO process. N/S co-doped microporous zeolite-templated carbon for efficient CO 2 adsorption and separation

Abstract:Heteroatomic doping of porous carbon materials can give rise to variations in the electronic structure and properties, and has been used to enhance the adsorption and separation of CO 2 . Herein, N and S doped zeolite-templated carbon (ZTC) are synthesized to study their CO 2 adsorption and selective from CO 2 /N 2 . ZTC-N, ZTC-S and ZTC-NS exhibit comparatively high CO 2 adsorption of 6.12, 7.73 and 9.32 mmol g −1 at 0 °C, which are more than three times than that of ZTC (1.98 mmol g −1 ). The CO 2 adsorption capacity for ZTC-NS at 25 °C and 1 bar can reach as high as 6.03 mmol g −1 , which can still occupy approximately 96% after 5 cycles. The obtained carbon materials ZTC-NS with the smallest BET surface area show the highest CO 2 adsorption capacity, which indicate an obvious synergistic enhancement effect between sulfur and nitrogen doping. The detailed theoretical calculations indicate N and S co-doping into porous carbon materials assists the change of electrostatic surface potential and local electronic density, thus enhanced the CO 2 adsorption.

Abstract:SAPO-18/34 zeolite intergrowths are synthesized in dual-template method with TEAOH and TEA as co-templates. The physical and chemical properties of the zeolite intergrowths are characterized by using XRD, ICP-AES, N2 adsorption-desorption, SEM, TEM and FT-IR. Moreover, the catalytic performances of the zeolite intergrowths in the conversion of syngas to olefins (STO) are studied by combining with ZnCrOx oxide to construct bi-functional catalysts. Equal amount of TEA and TEAOH in the synthesis mixture and proper silicon content (0.02<sio2</sio/Al2O3 < 0.20) favor the crystallization of nanosized SAPO-18/34 zeolite intergrowths with AEI units dominating. Otherwise, varying template compositions or raising the SiO2/Al2O3 molar ratios makes CHA units grow preferentially. Well crystallizations make the zeolite intergrowths of high microporosities, large surface areas and enhanced acidity properties. STO reaction results reveal that very high C2-4 olefins selectivity of 87.6% and CO conversion of 26.7% at space velocity of 6000 ml/h/gcatal can be achieved over catalyst ZnCr&Zy-0.02 with zeolite intergrowth of low acidity. The selectivity of by-products C2-4 paraffins can be strictly constrained to 2.2% with olefins/paraffins (O/P) ratio of 40.4. Catalyst ZnCr&Zy-0.10 with improved acidity (SiO2/Al2O3 = 0.10) in zeolite intergrowth exhibits higher CO conversion of 31.5% with C2-4 olefins selectivity of 81.4% and no obvious deactivation can be observed during a 160 h test. Furthermore, by tuning the weight ratios of ZnCrOx oxides to zeolites in the catalysts, it shows excessive strong acid sites in zeolites lead to more C2-4 paraffins formed.

Abstract:Rho zeolite was successfully synthesized by hydrothermal synthesis adopting 18-crown-6 as template, and the cations (H+, Na+, K+, Cs+, Cd2+ and Pb2+) of different radii were introduced into the framework of Rho by ion exchange. The samples were characterized by XRD, SEM-EDX, ICP and N2-BET. The adsorption behavior of CO2 and CH4 on cation-exchanged Rho was measured, and the adsorption isotherm was fitted by Langmuir equation to study the adsorption performance of these zeolites. The adsorption results show that the pore size of Rho is not solely dependent on the cation radius, the different positions of the cations are also more crucial in pore size adjustment. In all researched Rho, the introduction of Cd2+ and Pb2+ can more significantly reduce the pore size, and completely restrict the entry of CH4, thereby further improving the CO2/CH4 selectivity. Therein, Cd-Rho has the best adsorption performance, with considerable CO2 adsorption capacity, and extremely high CO2/CH4 selectivity and CO2 working capacity, which provides a new clue for the development of adsorbents for CO2 and CH4 separation in PSA process.

Optimized Preparation of Nanosized Hollow SSZ-13 Molecular Sieves with Ultrasonic Assistance

Abstract:Because of its unique eight-membered ring pore structure and the arrangement of cations in its structure, the SSZ-13 molecular sieve has a higher affinity for CO2 than other gases, meaning it has attracted more attention than other porous materials for CO2 adsorption. However, the expensive template and long preparation time limits the industrial production of SSZ-13. In this work, a hollow structure was successfully introduced into the nanosized SSZ-13 molecular sieve with ultrasonic treatment. The effects of the amount of seed added and the ultrasonic time on the structure were investigated. When the amount of seed added was 0.5 wt.% and the ultrasonic time was 60 min, the sample showed a hollow cubic crystal with a diameter of about 50 nm. The specific surface area reached 791.50 m2/g, and the mesoporous ratio was 66.3%. The samples were tested for CO2 adsorption performance at 298 K. It was found that the hollow sample prepared in this work has higher CO2 adsorption capacity compared with the SSZ-13 zeolite prepared with conventional methods. When the adsorption pressure was 0.27 bar, the adsorption amount reached 2.53 mmol/g. The hollow SSZ-13 molecular sieve reached a CO2 adsorption capacity of 4.24 mmol/g at 1 bar.

Abstract:SSZ-13, with a unique pore structure and excellent thermal stability, showed a potential application in the adsorption and catalysis industry. In this work, Al(NO3)3 was used as an Al source to study the performance and morphology of the zeolite. The zeolite was prepared with an unconventional process by adding an Al source before the structure-directing agent and base. When inorganic oxygen-containing anions were introduced into the unconventional synthesis system, the crystals of the zeolite conform to the unconventional growth mode. The zeolites with large crystals were assembled from small unit nanocrystals. Extending the reaction time, aging time and adding fluoride ions introduced a multistage pore structure on the surface of the molecular sieve, which improved the CO2 adsorption performance. When aging for 24 h, reaction for 96 h, and the amount of fluorine added was 0.05 (F/Si), the sample had the best hierarchical pore structure. The SSZ-13 molecular sieve with an added amount of 0.1 (F/Si) has the highest CO2 adsorption performance. The adsorption amount was 4.55 mmol/g at 1 bar, which is 20.4% higher than that of zeolite SSZ-13 prepared by the conventional process.
