Abstract:We consider a purely algebraic result. Then given a circle or cyclic group of prime order action on a manifold, we will use it to estimate the lower bound of the number of fixed points. We also give an obstruction to the existence of $\mathbb{Z}_p$ action on manifolds with isolated fixed points when $p$ is a prime.

Abstract:The automorphism group of a class of nilpotent groups with infinite cyclic derived subgroups is determined. Let G be the direct product of a generalized extraspecial ℤ-group E and a free abelian group A with rank m , where E = {( [ 1 kα _1 kα _2 ⋯ kα _n α _n + 1; 0 1 0 ⋯ 0 α _n + 2; ⋮ ⋮ ⋮ ⋮ ⋮; 0 0 0 ⋯ 1 α _2n + 1; 0 0 0 ⋯ 0 1 ])| α _i∈ Z,i = 1,2,...,2n + 1.}, where k is a positive integer. Let Aut G ′ G be the normal subgroup of Aut G consisting of all elements of Aut G which act trivially on the derived subgroup G ′ of G , and Aut G/ζG,ζG G be the normal subgroup of Aut G consisting of all central automorphisms of G which also act trivially on the center ζG of G . Abstract:Let G be an extension of ℚ by a direct sum of r copies of ℚ. (1) If G is abelian, then G is a direct sum of r + 1 copies of ℚ and Aut G ≅ GL( r + 1, Q ); (2) If G is non-abelian, then G is a direct product of an extraspecial ℚ-group E and m copies of ℚ, where E /ζ E is a linear space over Q with dimension 2 n and m + 2 n = r . Abstract:Given positive integers $p$ and $m$, where $p$ is assumed to be an odd prime, we determine the automorphism groups of $p$-groups $J$, $H$, and $K$ of orders $p^{7m}$, $p^{6m}$, and $p^{5m}$, and nilpotency classes 5, 4, and 3, respectively, all of which arise naturally from the Macdonald group $\langle x,y\,|\, x^{[x,y]}=x^{1+p^m\ell},\, y^{[y,x]}=y^{1+p^m\ell}\rangle$, where $\ell\in{\mathbf Z}$ is relatively prime to $p$.

Abstract:A finite abelian $p$-group having an automorphism $x$ such that $1+\ldots+x^{p-1}=0$, can be viewed as a module over an appropriate discrete valuation ring $\mathcal{O}$ containing $\mathbb{Z}_p$ (the ring of $p$-adic integer). This yields the natural problem of comparing the invariants of $A$ as a $\mathbb{Z}_p$-module to its invariants as an $\mathcal{O}$-module. We solve the latter problem in a more general context, and give some applications to the structure of some $p$-groups and their automorphisms.

Abstract:We define a particular type of automorphisms called transvections on a finite finite abelian p-group H-p. It is proved that the subgroup E of the automorphism group Aut(H-p) of H-p generated by those transvections is normal in it, and that Aut(H-p) can be written as the product of E and some abelian subgroup K. The center of Aut(H-p) is also determined.

Abstract:Let $A$ be the ring of elements in an algebraic function field $K$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$ which are integral outside a fixed place $\infty$. In contrast to the classical modular group $SL_2(\mathbb{Z})$ and the Bianchi groups, the {\it Drinfeld modular group} $G=GL_2(A)$ is not finitely generated and its automorphism group $\mathrm{Aut}(G)$ is uncountable. Except for the simplest case $A=\mathbb{F}_q[t]$ not much is known about the generators of $\mathrm{Aut}(G)$ or even its structure. We find a set of generators of $\mathrm{Aut}(G)$ for a new case. \par On the way, we show that {\it every} automorphism of $G$ acts on both, the {\it cusps} and the {\it elliptic points} of $G$. Generalizing a result of Reiner for $A=\mathbb{F}_q[t]$ we describe for each cusp an uncountable subgroup of $\mathrm{Aut}(G)$ whose action on $G$ is essentially defined on the stabilizer of that cusp. In the case where $\delta$ (the degree of $\infty$) is $1$, the elliptic points are related to the isolated vertices of the quotient graph $G\setminus\mathcal{T}$ of the Bruhat-Tits tree. We construct an infinite group of automorphisms of $G$ which fully permutes the isolated vertices with cyclic stabilizer.

Abstract:The group of 2-by-2 matrices with integer entries and determinant $\pm > 1$ can be identified either with the group of outer automorphisms of a rank two free group or with the group of isotopy classes of homeomorphisms of a 2-dimensional torus. Thus this group is the beginning of three natural sequences of groups, namely the general linear groups ${\rm{GL}}(n,\Z)$, the groups of outer automorphisms of free groups of rank $n\geq 2$, and the mapping class groups of closed orientable surfaces of genus $g\geq 1$. Much of the work on mapping class groups and automorphisms of free groups is motivated by the idea that these sequences of groups are strongly analogous. In this article we highlight a few of the most striking similarities and differences between these series of groups and present a list of open problems motivated by this philosophy.

On the conjecture of non-inner automorphisms of finite $p$-groups

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime number. A longstanding conjecture asserts that every finite non-abelian $p$-group has a non-inner automorphism of order $p$. In this paper, we prove that if $G$ is an odd order finite non-abelian monolithic $p$-group such that every maximal subgroup of $G$ is non-abelian and $[Z(M), g] \leq Z(G)$ for every maximal subgroup $M$ of $G$ and $g \in G \setminus M$. Then $G$ has a non-inner automorphism of order $p$ leaving the Frattini subgroup $\Phi(G)$ elementwise fixed.

Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime. We construct a $p$-group $P$ of nilpotency class two, rank seven and exponent $p$, such that $\mathrm{Aut}(P)$ induces $N_{\mathrm{GL}(7,p)}(G_2(p)) = Z(\mathrm{GL}(7,p)) G_2(p)$ on the Frattini quotient $P/\Phi(P)$. The constructed group $P$ is the smallest $p$-group with these properties, having order $p^{14}$, and when $p = 3$, our construction gives two nonisomorphic $p$-groups. To show that $P$ satisfies the specified properties, we study the action of $G_2(q)$ on the octonion algebra over $\mathbb{F}_q$, for each power $q$ of $p$, and explore the reducibility of the exterior square of each irreducible seven-dimensional $\mathbb{F}_q[G_2(q)]$-module.

Units of twisted group rings and their correlations to classical group rings

Abstract:This paper is centered around the classical problem of extracting properties of a finite group $G$ from the ring isomorphism class of its integral group ring $\mathbb{Z} G$. This problem is considered via describing the unit group $\mathcal{U}( \mathbb{Z} G)$ generically for a finite group. Since the $`90s$ several well known generic constructions of units are known to generate a subgroup of finite index in $\mathcal{U}(\mathbb{Z } G)$ if $\mathbb{Q} G$ does not have so-called exceptional simple epimorphic images, e.g. $M_2 (\mathbb{Q})$. However it remained a major open problem to find a {\it generic} construction under the presence of the latter type of simple images. In this article we obtain such generic construction of units. Moreover, this new construction also exhibits new properties, such as providing generically free subgroups of large rank. As an application we answer positively for several classes of groups recent conjectures on the rank and the periodic elements of the abelianisation $\mathcal{U}(\mathbb{Z} G)^{ab}$. To obtain all this, we investigate the group ring $R \Gamma$ of an extension $\Gamma$ of some normal subgroup $N$ by a group $G$, over a domain $R$. More precisely, we obtain a direct sum decomposition of the (twisted) group algebra of $\Gamma$ over the fraction field $F$ of $R$ in terms of various twisted group rings of $G$ over finite extensions of $F$. Furthermore, concrete information on the kernel and cokernel of the associated projections is obtained. Along the way we also launch the investigations of the unit group of twisted group rings and of $\mathcal{U}( R\Gamma)$ via twisted group rings.

Abstract:In the present work, we contribute with new results that enabled us to give an explicit description of the groups of central units of integral group rings and group rings with coefficients in Z[θ] , for certain groups G , where θ is a p− primitive root of unity and p is a prime number. In particular, we find a set of generators for the case where G is the Heisenberg Group.
