Abstract:This paper offers a comprehensive exploration of the future trajectory of health physics, examining influential factors in external and internal dimensions. External factors include an in-depth analysis of low-dose (10-100 mSv) measurement challenges and priorities, highlighting the transformative potential of biomarkers in solving radiation susceptibility following low-dose exposures. Cutting-edge technologies are at the forefront, with insights into emerging radiation detection tools like plastic scintillators with triple discrimination capabilities and sensors based on plastic scintillation microspheres (PSm) for estimating α and β emitting radionuclides in environmental samples. Remote detection systems using drones, robot dogs, and quantum sensors boasting heightened sensitivity and precision also are discussed. Integrating artificial intelligence (AI) and data analytics emerges as a pivotal element, promising to redefine health physics by minimizing radiation exposure risks. The exploration includes innovative materials for radiation shielding, advancements in virtual reality applications, preparation for radiological protection during armed conflicts, and the ever-evolving landscape of decommissioning health physics. Examining health effects from non-ionizing radiation and analyzing broader contextual factors such as regulatory shifts, geopolitics, and socioeconomic influences adds depth to understanding the external forces leading to the future of health physics. Internally, the paper focuses on the transformative dynamics of health physics education and training, encompassing expanded educational horizons, innovative delivery methods, targeted student outreach strategies, and insights into navigating health physics careers amid a dynamically evolving job market. The discussion unfolds further, focusing on new risk communication strategies, the collaborative potential of interdisciplinary approaches, and the significance of health physics summer schools and consortia for transformative educational paradigms. Abstract:Emerging technological advances are reshaping the casting sector in latest decades. Casting technology is evolving towards intelligent casting paradigm that involves automation, greenization and intelligentization, which attracts more and more attention from the academic and industry communities. In this paper, the main features of casting technology were briefly summarized and forecasted, and the recent developments of key technologies and the innovative efforts made in promoting intelligent casting process were discussed. Moreover, the technical visions of intelligent casting process were also put forward. The key technologies for intelligent casting process comprise 3D printing technologies, intelligent mold technologies and intelligent process control technologies. In future, the intelligent mold that derived from mold with sensors, control devices and actuators will probably incorporate the Internet of Things, online inspection, embedded simulation, decision-making and control system, and other technologies to form intelligent cyber-physical casting system, which may pave the way to realize intelligent casting. It is promising that the intelligent casting process will eventually achieve the goal of real-time process optimization and full-scale control, with the defects, microstructure, performance, and service life of the fabricated castings can be accurately predicted and tailored.

Abstract:Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) is at the forefront of computer science today. Everyone is talking about AI and how it is the way of the future. Companies are using machine learning (ML)algorithms to enhance their business offerings, which is showing promise in the realm of improved efficiency. The potential benefit of a fully developed AI is exceptional, but so are the threats that AI poses. While the developers of the various forms of AI are eager to be the first to create a fully functional, truly intelligent AI, they do not always consider the negative possibilities that AI creates. ChatGPT was recently used to hack itself and exposed a vulnerability in its open-source library. In addition to using AI to create hacks and exploits, AI is also being used to support social engineering efforts by creating more convincing social engineering attacks. Whether the attack is using AI to duplicate a person's voice to convince a loved one to send a gift card to get them out of jail or if it is being used to simply scrape a person’s social media to develop a more precise method of attack, the concern that AI will be used for nefarious purposes is genuinely profound. This paper is a case study looking into how AI is and will be used to improve social engineering. A literature review was conducted to identify how researchers are already seeing how AI is being used and to project future threats. AI is here to stay, and the threats it brings are existential, and it is imperative that these threats are realized, and defensive measures are developed. This case study looks at how AI is and will be used to improve the efficacy of social engineering attacks.

Abstract:Rapid technological progress and digitalization have considerably changed the role of technology in sports in the past two decades. As the human limits of performance have been reached in many disciplines, reaching future limits will increasingly depend on technology. While this represents progress in how athletes train and compete, similar developments await sports managers in the way they lead sports organizations and sports consumers in the way they consume and engage with sports. Using the SportsTech Matrix (i.e., a framework to capture how different types of technologies provide solutions to different user groups in sports), we examine how technology will impact sports in the future. We present a Delphi-based prospective study with quantitative and qualitative assessments from 92 subject matter experts for six future projections and 35 non-Delphi prospective survey items. We find that, by 2030, technology will significantly impact all three user groups in sports: athletes, consumers, and managers. For athletes, experts anticipate technology to play a major role for sporting performance improvements. For consumers, the consumption of sports content will continue to change significantly. For management, new types of manager profiles in terms of backgrounds and skill sets would be desirable. We discuss two possible future scenarios: (1) a probable future and (2) a game changer. Our findings should provide relevant insights for decision-makers and other stakeholders in sports and raise promising directions for future research.

Abstract:Over the past half-century, technology has evolved beyond our wildest dreams. However, while the benefits of technological growth are undeniable, the nascent Internet did not anticipate the online threats we routinely encounter and the harms which can result. As our world becomes increasingly connected, it is critical we consider what implications current and future technologies have for security and privacy. We approach this challenge by surveying 30 predictions across industry, academia and international organisations to extract a number of common themes. Through this, we distill 10 emerging scenarios and reflect on the impact these might have on a range of stakeholders. Considering gaps in best practice and requirements for further research, we explore how security and privacy might evolve over the next decade. We find that existing guidelines both fail to consider the relationships between stakeholders and do not address the novel risks from wearable devices and insider threats. Our approach rigorously analyses emerging scenarios and suggests future improvements, of crucial importance as we look to pre-empt new technological threats.

Abstract:As envisioned in a recent future-casting workshop, warfare will continue to be transformed by advances in information technologies. In fact, information itself will become the decisive domain of warfare. Four developments will significantly change the nature of the battle. The first of these will be a proliferation of intelligent systems; the second, augmented humans; the third, the decisive battle for the information domain; and the fourth, the introduction of new, networked approaches to command and control. Each of these new capabilities possesses the same critical vulnerability - attacks on the information, communications and computers that will enable human-robot teams to make sense of the battlefield and act decisively. Hence, the largely unseen battle for information, communications and computer security will determine the extent to which adversaries will be able to function and succeed on the battlefield of 2050.

Abstract:The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) has ushered in an era of unprecedented possibilities and, at the same time, poses significant threats in the media landscape. As a potent tool, AI can streamline operations, offering innovative solutions like content personalization, predictive analytics, and augmented reality experiences that can enhance user engagement and boost the media industry’s economic viability. These opportunities allow for a more immersive and personalized user experience, leveraging data to create content that is finely tuned to individual preferences and trends. However, the integration of AI in media does not come without its challenges. The threat of deep fakes and the dissemination of misinformation stand as substantial concerns, with AI technologies facilitating the creation of highly convincing fake content that can manipulate perceptions and sow discord. Moreover, the autonomy given to AI systems can potentially lead to job displacements and raise ethical concerns regarding privacy and data security. Despite these threats, when wielded responsibly and ethically, AI can usher in a new golden age for media characterized by creativity, efficiency, and innovation. As the media industry stands at this crossroads, it must navigate the fine balance between leveraging AI’s opportunities and mitigating its potential threats, fostering a landscape that upholds truth, ethics, and human value at its core. It is imperative for stakeholders to collaborate, devising strategies and regulatory frameworks to ensure AI serves as a force for good, steering media towards a future that embodies progress and inclusivity.
On the Horizon: Interactive and Compositional Deepfakes

Abstract:Over a five-year period, computing methods for generating high-fidelity, fictional depictions of people and events moved from exotic demonstrations by computer science research teams into ongoing use as a tool of disinformation. The methods, referred to with the portmanteau of "deepfakes," have been used to create compelling audiovisual content. Here, I share challenges ahead with malevolent uses of two classes of deepfakes that we can expect to come into practice with costly implications for society: interactive and compositional deepfakes. Interactive deepfakes have the capability to impersonate people with realistic interactive behaviors, taking advantage of advances in multimodal interaction. Compositional deepfakes leverage synthetic content in larger disinformation plans that integrate sets of deepfakes over time with observed, expected, and engineered world events to create persuasive synthetic histories. Synthetic histories can be constructed manually but may one day be guided by adversarial generative explanation (AGE) techniques. In the absence of mitigations, interactive and compositional deepfakes threaten to move us closer to a post-epistemic world, where fact cannot be distinguished from fiction. I shall describe interactive and compositional deepfakes and reflect about cautions and potential mitigations to defend against them.

Abstract:AI has provided us with the ability to automate tasks, extract information from vast amounts of data, and synthesize media that is nearly indistinguishable from the real thing. However, positive tools can also be used for negative purposes. In particular, cyber adversaries can use AI to enhance their attacks and expand their campaigns. Although offensive AI has been discussed in the past, there is a need to analyze and understand the threat in the context of organizations. For example, how does an AI-capable adversary impact the cyber kill chain? Does AI benefit the attacker more than the defender? What are the most significant AI threats facing organizations today and what will be their impact on the future? In this study, we explore the threat of offensive AI on organizations. First, we present the background and discuss how AI changes the adversary's methods, strategies, goals, and overall attack model. Then, through a literature review, we identify 32 offensive AI capabilities which adversaries can use to enhance their attacks. Finally, through a panel survey spanning industry, government and academia, we rank the AI threats and provide insights on the adversaries.

Abstract:Significant progress has been made in AI safety. However, as this field thrives, a critical question emerges: Are our current efforts aligned with the broader perspective of history and human civilization? This paper presents a blueprint for an advanced human society and leverages this vision to guide contemporary AI safety efforts. We outline a future where the Internet of Everything becomes reality, and create a roadmap that represents significant technological advancements towards this envisioned future. For each stage of advancement, we forecast potential AI safety issues that humanity may face. By projecting current efforts against this blueprint, we examine the alignment between the present motivations and long-term needs. We identify gaps in current approaches and highlight unique challenges and missions that demand increasing attention from AI safety practitioners in the 2020s, addressing critical areas that must not be overlooked in shaping a safe and responsible future for AI development. This vision paper aims to offer a broader perspective on AI safety, emphasizing that our efforts should not only address immediate concerns but also anticipate potential risks in the expanding AI landscape, thereby fostering AI's role in promoting a more secure and sustainable future for human civilization.

Abstract:This report surveys the landscape of potential security threats from malicious uses of AI, and proposes ways to better forecast, prevent, and mitigate these threats. After analyzing the ways in which AI may influence the threat landscape in the digital, physical, and political domains, we make four high-level recommendations for AI researchers and other stakeholders. We also suggest several promising areas for further research that could expand the portfolio of defenses, or make attacks less effective or harder to execute. Finally, we discuss, but do not conclusively resolve, the long-term equilibrium of attackers and defenders.

Abstract:Abstract Social media allows people to freely interact with others and offers multiple ways for marketers to reach and engage with consumers. Considering the numerous ways social media affects individuals and businesses alike, in this article, the authors focus on where they believe the future of social media lies when considering marketing-related topics and issues. Drawing on academic research, discussions with industry leaders, and popular discourse, the authors identify nine themes, organized by predicted imminence (i.e., the immediate, near, and far futures), that they believe will meaningfully shape the future of social media through three lenses: consumer, industry, and public policy. Within each theme, the authors describe the digital landscape, present and discuss their predictions, and identify relevant future research directions for academics and practitioners.

Effective AI strategies include establishing integrated 3-5 year technology roadmaps that articulate adoption timelines, skill development, and business transformations, identifying core capabilities to augment with AI, such as diagnostics for healthcare, while data and technology foundations are also critical for deploying AI projects at scale and continuous skills training is needed to fill emerging roles and offset potential job losses. The article discusses strategic considerations for industries like healthcare, where strategies focus on augmenting clinicians, standardizing data, and establishing governance, transportation organizations must plan for autonomous vehicle testing and adoption, and reskill mechanics, and financial institutions can develop robo-advisors and lending platforms while modernizing legacy systems. Therefore, organizational leaders need such integrated roadmaps and ongoing governance to leverage AI's productivity benefits while guiding responsible adoption and workforce evolution amid ongoing disruption through proactive strategic planning that will help direct, rather than undergo, technological transformation.
