Abstract:The aim of this study is to investigate the propagation of shock waves and self-preserving waves in soft tissues such as aorta and brain as a mechanism of injury in high rate loading conditions as seen in blunt trauma and blast-induced trauma (BIT). It is shown that such phenomena can only be seen in nonlinear viscoelastic materials and the existing linear and quasi-linear models predict only decaying waves. Based on the results of this study, it is shown that when studying such high-rate loading conditions as in a blast, it is critical to consider the discontinuities predicted in strain and stress in certain realistic initial conditions to accurately determine the extent of soft tissue injuries.Copyright © 2011 by ASME

["Sick building syndrome"--a new problem of occupational medicine].

Abstract:"Sick building syndrome" (SBS) is a group of symptoms experienced by people working in various buildings. This term or another one "building-related illness" (BRI) is used to define illnesses related to non-industrial and non-residential buildings, mainly modern offices, in which people spend many working hours. Specific BRI applies to a group of illnesses with a fairy homogeneous clinical picture and known etiology (infectious, immunological or allergic). Non-specific BRI applies to a group of heterogeneous and non-specific, work-related symptoms, including irritation of skin and mucous membranes of the eyes, nose and throat, headache, fatigue and concentration difficulties. BRI seems to be related to inadequate ventilation, humidity and temperature changes, chemical and biological contaminants from indoor and outdoor sources. Sick building syndrome is considered as an important problem of occupational medicine, bearing in mind that 50% of the entire workforce in industrialized countries work in this type of buildings, and nearly 20-30% of this group of workers report symptoms suggesting the prevalence of sick building syndrome.
Shock-wave Energy Deflection Due to the Presence of Bone

Abstract:The physical interaction of shock waves with musculoskeletal tissues is inherently different from other high-pressure acoustic therapies. Whereas high-intensity focused ultrasound and lithotripsy focus their energy in regions of soft tissue, musculoskeletal shock-wave therapy (SWT) involves focusing shock waves (SWs) near or at bones. The presence of bones will cause reflection, refraction, and diffraction of acoustic energy. In our analysis of cavitation generated during clinical SWT treatment, we noticed that the cavitation was occurring away from the SW focus. We confirmed this by performing an in-vitro experiment on a bone embedded in gel. We also quantified the deflection angle as a function position near a bone in water: A talus was manufactured using rapid prototyping. It was placed near the focus of an electrohydraulic SW device. To visualize the pressure field, a high-speed camera imaged the cavitation field generated around the focus. As the bone was moved closer to the focus, the cavitation field (and thus, the pressure field) deflected away from the bone. The deflection angle was measured as a function of relative distance between the bone and focus. Numerical simulations were performed to model the deflection of energy away from the bone.
Irregular reflection of spark-generated shock pulses from a rigid surface: Mach-Zehnder interferometry measurements in air

Abstract:The irregular reflection of weak acoustic shock waves, known as the von Neumann reflection, has been observed experimentally and numerically for spherically diverging waves generated by an electric spark source. Two optical measurement methods are used: a Mach-Zehnder interferometer for measuring pressure waveforms and a Schlieren system for visualizing shock fronts. Pressure waveforms are reconstructed from the light phase difference measured by the interferometer using the inverse Abel transform. In numerical simulations, the axisymmetric Euler equations are solved using finite-difference time-domain methods and the spark source is modeled as an instantaneous energy injection with a Gaussian shape. Waveforms and reflection patterns obtained from the simulations are in good agreement with those measured by the interferometer and the Schlieren methods. The Mach stem formation is observed close to the surface for incident pressures within the range of 800 to 4000 Pa. Similarly, as for strong shocks generated by blasts, it is found that for spherical weak shocks the Mach stem length increases with distance following a parabolic law. This study confirms the occurrence of irregular reflections at acoustic pressure levels and demonstrates the benefits of the Mach-Zehnder interferometer method when microphone measurements cannot be applied.
Shock Wave Propagation as a Mechanism of Injury in Nonlinear Viscoelastic Soft Tissues

Abstract:This study investigates the propagation of shock waves and self-preserving waves in soft tissues such as brain as a mechanism of injury in high rate loading conditions as seen in blast-induced neurotrauma (BINT). The derived mathematical models indicate that whereas linear viscoelastic models predict only decaying waves, instances of such phenomena as shock can be achieved in nonlinear media. In this study, a nonlinear viscoelastic material model for brain tissue was developed in compression. Furthermore, nonlinear viscoelastic wave propagation in brain tissue was studied and a criterion for the development of shock waves was formulated. It was shown that discontinuities in the acceleration that happen in blast loading conditions may evolve to shock waves, resulting in large discontinuities in strain and stress at the wave front leading to tissue injuries.Copyright © 2011 by ASME

Abstract:In this study,systematic centrifuge experiments and numerical studies are conducted to investigate the effect of shock loads due to an underwater explosion on the dynamic responses of an air-backed steel plate.Numerical simulations with three different models of pressure time history generated by underwater explosion were carried out.The first model of pressure time history was measured in test.The second model to predict the time history of shock wave pressure from an underwater explosion was created by Cole in 1948.Coefficients of Cole's formulas are determined experimentally.The third model was developed by Zamyshlyaev and Yakovlev in 1973.All of them are implemented into the numerical model to calculate the shock responses of the plate.Simulated peak strains obtained from the three models are compared with the experimental results,yielding average relative differences of 21.39％,45.73％,and 13.92％,respectively.The Russell error technique is used to quantitatively analyze the correlation between the numerical and experimental results.Quantitative analysis shows that the simulated strains for most measurement points on the steel plate are acceptable.By changing the scaled distances,different shock impulses were obtained and exerted on the steel plate.Systematic numerical studies are performed to investigate the effect of the accumulated shock impulse on the peak strains.The numerical and experimental results suggest that the peak strains are strongly dependent on the accumulated shock impulse.

Abstract:Understanding the damage that high intensity compression waves induce in human tissues is critical for developing improved therapies for patients suffering from blast injuries. Experimentally based models of blast injury using live biological samples are needed. In this study we have developed a system to directly assess the effects of dynamic loading conditions on live cells. Here, we describe a confinement chamber designed to subject live cell cultures in a liquid environment to high intensity compression waves using a split Hopkinson pressure bar system. Signals from the strain gauges mounted on the bars and the chamber allow the measurement of parameters such as pressure and duration of the stimulus. The chamber itself also allows recovery of cells subjected to compression for assessment of cellular damage. In these studies we present evidence of increased levels of damage and loss of cellular integrity in cultured mouse mesenchymal stem cells subjected to a high-intensity compression wave with a peak pressure of 7.6 ± 0.8 MPa.

Abstract:Using high frame-rate ultrasound and ¡1μm sensitive motion tracking we previously showed that shear waves at the surface of ex vivo and in situ brains develop into shear shock waves deep inside the brain, with destructive local accelerations. However post-mortem tissue cannot develop injuries and has different viscoelastodynamic behavior from in vivo tissue. Here we present the ultrasonic measurement of the high-rate shear shock biomechanics in the in vivo porcine brain, and histological assessment of the resulting axonal pathology. A new biomechanical model of brain injury was developed consisting of a perforated mylar surface attached to the brain and vibrated using an electromechanical shaker. Using a custom sequence with 8 interleaved wide beam emissions, brain imaging and motion tracking were performed at 2900 images/s. Shear shock waves were observed for the first time in vivo wherein the shock acceleration was measured to be 2.6 times larger than the surface acceleration ( 95g vs. 36g). Histopathology showed axonal damage in the impacted side of the brain from the brain surface, accompanied by a local shock-front acceleration of >70g. This shows that axonal injury occurs deep in the brain even though the shear excitation was at the brain surface, and the acceleration measurements support the hypothesis that shear shock waves are responsible for deep traumatic brain injuries.

Abstract:Routine forensic research into in vitro skin/skull/brain ballistic blood backspatter behavior has traditionally used gelatin at a 1:10 Water:Powder (W:P) ratio by volume as a brain simulant. A limitation of gelatin is its high elasticity compared to brain tissue. Therefore this study investigated the use of dental alginate and agar impression materials as a brain simulant for ballistic testing. Fresh deer brain, alginate (W:P ratio 91.5:8.5) and agar (W:P ratio 81:19) specimens (n=10) (11×22×33mm) were placed in transparent Perspex boxes of the same internal dimensions prior to shooting with a 0.22inch caliber high velocity air gun. Quantitative analysis to establish kinetic energy loss, vertical displacement elastic behavior and qualitative analysis to establish elasticity behavior was done via high-speed camera footage (SA5, Photron, Japan) using Photron Fastcam Viewer software (Version 3.5.1, Photron, Japan) and visual observation. Damage mechanisms and behavior were qualitatively established by observation of the materials during and after shooting. The qualitative analysis found that of the two simulant materials tested, agar behaved more like brain in terms of damage and showed similar mechanical response to brain during the passage of the projectile, in terms of energy absorption and vertical velocity displacement. In conclusion agar showed a mechanical and subsequent damage response that was similar to brain compared to alginate.
An experiment study on tissue injury with double shock wave

Abstract:Objective To study whether tissue injury could be increased by double shock wave while it improves the efficiency of lithotripsy. Methods A series of experiment study on the tissue injury in vivo pigs with double and single shock wave as well as electromagnetic shock wave has been carried out. Results Under the conditions of 8 kV and 1 000 times concussion, the trauma range of kidney is 18 mm×15 mm×3 mm with single shock wave,and 14 mm×11 mm×2 mm with double shock wave,the trauma range of ureter is 42 mm with single shock wave and 30 mm with double shock wave.Under the same energy and concussion,the injury focus induced by double shock wave is small than that induced by single shock wave.Microstructure pathology shows that the characteristics of focus on renal artery,vein,glumeruli,renal tubules and ureter are similar. Conclusions Compared with the focus induced by single or by electromagnetic shock wave,the focus on the tissue of kidney and ureter induced by the double shock wave is smaller.
Finite Element Modeling Of Acoustic Wave Propagation And Energy Deposition In Bone During Extracorporeal Shock Wave Treatment

Abstract:It is well known that extracorporeal shock wave treatment is capable of providing a non-surgical and relatively pain free alternative treatment modality for patients suffering from musculoskeletal disorders but do not respond well to conservative treatments. The major objective of current work is to investigate how the shock wave (SW) field would change if a bony structure exists in the path of the acoustic wave. Here, a model of finite element method (FEM) was developed based on linear elasticity and acoustic propagation equations to examine SW propagation and deflection near a mimic musculoskeletal bone. High-speed photography experiments were performed to record cavitation bubbles generated in SW field with the presence of mimic bone. By comparing experimental and simulated results, the effectiveness of FEM model could be verified and strain energy distributions in the bone were also predicted according to numerical simulations. The results show that (1) the SW field will be deflected with the presence of bony structure and varying deflection angles can be observed as the bone shifted up in the z-direction relative to SW geometric focus (F2 focus); (2) SW deflection angels predicted by the FEM model agree well with experimental results obtained from high-speed photographs; and (3) temporal evolutions of strain energy distribution in the bone can also be evaluated based on FEM model, with varied vertical distance between F2 focus and intended target point on the bone surface. The present studies indicate that, by combining MRI/CT scans and FEM modeling work, it is possible to better understand SW propagation characteristics and energy deposition in musculoskeletal structure during extracorporeal shock wave treatment, which is important for standardizing the treatment dosage, optimizing treatment protocols, and even providing patient-specific treatment guidance in clinic. Abstract:Shock waves have recently attracted attention for their effects on biological soft tissues, such as angiogenesis. When shock waves are reflected at some surfaces of biological tissues, an expansion wave with as short duration as shock wave can be generated because of a change in acoustic impedance. We hypothesized that the expansion wave affects soft tissues, inducing bioeffects. In this study, we developed an expansion wave generator consisting of an ellipsoidal reflector and a polydimethyl siloxane (PDMS) unit. A shock wave (compression wave) was generated by underwater electric discharge and focused by reflection from an ellipsoidal mirror. The shock wave propagated in the water and was transmitted at the water-PDMS boundary surface because they have almost the same acoustic impedance (1.5 x 10(6) kg/m(2 center dot)s for water, approximately 1.4 x 10(6) kg/m(2)center dot s for PDMS). Next, the shock wave was reflected at the PDMS-air boundary surface. At this surface, the shock wave was converted to an expansion wave because the acoustic impedance of PDMS is much higher than that of air (4.3 x 10(2) kg/m(2)center dot s). After these reflections, the expansion wave was focused. At the focal point, the peak pressure measured by a hydrophone was - 5.52 +/- 1.23 MPa (n = 10) when the discharge voltage was 4 kV. Moreover, the half-width of the expansion wave was 0.55 +/- 0.16 mu s (n = 10). These values were the same as those of the shock wave. These results indicate that our expansion wave generator is able to produce expansion waves and is useful for studying their bioeffects.

Abstract:The prevalence of blast-induced traumatic brain injury in conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan has motivated laboratory scale experiments on biomedical effects of blast waves and studies of blast wave transmission properties of various materials in hopes of improving armor design to mitigate these injuries. This paper describes the design and performance of a table-top shock tube that is more convenient and widely accessible than traditional compression driven and blast driven shock tubes. The design is simple: it is an explosive driven shock tube employing a rifle primer which explodes when impacted by the firing pin. The firearm barrel acts as the shock tube, and the shock wave emerges from the muzzle. The small size of this shock tube can facilitate localized application of a blast wave to a subject, tissue, or material under test.

Surface wave analysis of the skin for penetrating and non-penetrating projectile impact in porcine legs

Abstract:Secondary blast injuries may result from high-velocity projectile fragments which ultimately increase medical costs, reduce active work time, and decrease quality of life. The role of skin penetration requires more investigation in energy absorption and surface mechanics for implementation in computational ballistic models. High-speed ballistic penetration studies have not considered penetrating and non-penetrating biomechanical properties of the skin, including radial wave displacement, resultant surface wave speed, or projectile material influence. A helium-pressurized launcher was used to accelerate 3/8″ (9.525 mm) diameter spherical projectiles toward seventeen whole porcine legs from seven pigs (39.53 ± 7.28 kg) at projectile velocities below and above V50. Projectiles included a mix of materials: stainless steel (n = 26), Si3N4 (n = 24), and acetal plastic (n = 24). Tracker video analysis software was used to determine projectile velocity at impact from the perpendicular view and motion of the tissue displacement wave from the in-line view. Average radial wave displacement and surface wave speed were calculated for each projectile material and categorized by penetrating or non-penetrating impacts. Two-sample t-tests determined that non-penetrating projectiles resulted in significantly faster surface wave speeds in porcine skin for stainless steel (p = 0.002), plastic (p = 0.004), and Si3N4 ball bearings (p = 0.014), while ANOVA determined significant differences in radial wave displacement and surface wave speed between projectile materials. Surface wave speed was used to quantify mechanical properties of the skin including elastic modulus, shear modulus, and bulk modulus during ballistic impact, which may be implemented to simulate accurate deformation behavior in computational impact models.

Abstract:Due to the heterogeneous structure of the soft biological tissue, such as the brain, surface waves might be important to elucidate the biomechanics of injury formation from impacts. In this context, surface waves generate a wavelength on the order of the centimeter with a typical penetration length of the same order. Therefore, investigating surface waves at depth is crucial for understanding their relationship with the physics of soft tissue injuries. Planar surface waves produce particle motion along two dimensions, the direction of propagation and the depth direction, making them more challenging to measure when compared to polarized shear waves that only produce motion in one direction. This study presents an experimental setup capable of generating Scholte wave propagating in a soft solid–liquid interface. In particular, we studied a tissue-mimicking phantom material, such as gelatin, under a layer of water. Ultrasound imaging techniques, operating at 8600 frames per second, and a one-dimensional cross-correlation algorithm were used to independently estimate the two components of the wave’s particle displacement. We conducted experiments sweeping frequencies between 50 and 500 Hz for different gelatin stiffness, finding a surface wave speed of 0.86 times the shear wave speed and a penetration distance of 0.35 times the wavelength. These results agree with the theory of Scholte waves propagating in an incompressible semi-infinite elastic medium covered by an incompressible fluid.

Investigation on Vibration Characteristics of Thin-Walled Steel Structures under Shock Waves

Abstract:Thin-walled steel structures, prized for their lightweight properties, material efficiency, and excellent mechanical characteristics, find wide-ranging applications in ships, aircraft, and vehicles. Given their typical role in various types of equipment, it is crucial to investigate the response of thin-walled structures to shock waves for the design and development of innovative equipment. In this study, a shock tube was employed to generate shock waves, and a rectangular steel plate with dimensions of 2400.0 mm × 1200.0 mm × 4.0 mm (length × width × thickness) was designed for conducting research on transient shock vibration. The steel plate was mounted on an adjustable bracket capable of moving vertically. Accelerometers were installed on the transverse and longitudinal symmetric axes of the steel plate. Transient shock loading was achieved at nine discrete positions on a steel plate by adjusting the horizontal position of the shock tube and the vertical position of the adjustable bracket. For each test, vibration data of eight different test positions were obtained. The wavelet transform (WT) and the improved ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) methods were introduced to perform a time-frequency analysis on the vibration of the steel plate. The results indicated that the EEMD method effectively alleviated the modal aliasing in the vibration response decomposition of thin-walled structures, as well as the incompletely continuous frequency domain issue in WT. Moreover, the duration of vibration at different frequencies and the variation of amplitude size with time under various shock conditions were determined for thin-walled structures. These findings offer valuable insights for the design and development of vehicles with enhanced resistance to shock wave loading.

Visualization of Stress Wave Propagation via Air-Coupled Acoustic Emission Sensors

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the feasibility of visualizing stress waves propagating in plates using air-coupled acoustic emission sensors. Specifically, we employ a device that embeds arrays of microphones around an optical lens in a helical pattern. By implementing a beamforming technique, this remote sensing system allows us to record wave propagation events in situ via a single-shot and full-field measurement. This is a significant improvement over the conventional wave propagation tracking approaches based on laser doppler vibrometry or digital image correlation techniques. In this paper, we focus on demonstrating the feasibility and efficacy of this air-coupled acoustic emission technique using large metallic plates exposed to external impacts. The visualization results of stress wave propagation will be shown under various impact scenarios. Such wave visualization capability is of tremendous importance from a structural health monitoring and nondestructive evaluation (SHM/NDE) standpoint. The proposed technique can be used to characterize and localize damage by detecting the attenuation, reflection, and scattering of stress waves that occurs at damage locations. This can ultimately lead to the development of new SHM/NDE methods for identifying hidden cracks or delaminations in metallic or composite plate structures simultaneously negating the need for mounted contact sensors.

Abstract:<p>The behaviour of multi-material systems subjected to dynamic loads is currently a topic of interest. This paper aims to study the performance of an impedance-graded multi-metallic (IGMM) system in mitigating the effects of stress waves generated during a high-velocity impact event. The IGMM system was designed by placing different metals in their reducing order of impedance. The experimental work was carried out using a single-stage light gas gun with a steel flyer fired at a velocity of 350 m/s. Armour-grade steel, titanium and aluminium were chosen as the materials and were used to design monolithic, bi-metallic and tri-metallic impedance graded targets. The free surface velocity of the final material in the target was measured using PDV probes and the generated velocity profile was used to quantify the Hugoniot Elastic Limit and the magnitude of the transmitted shock waves. A two-dimensional axisymmetric numerical model was used to simulate this impact event, which was carried out using the non-linear finite element code LS-DYNA. An analytical model was developed based on the shock wave propagation theories, using Matlab, to quantify the magnitude of the stresses within the different materials in the target. The output from the numerical and analytical models were in good agreement with the experimental results. The main findings from this study highlighted the potential of the IGMM system in reducing transmitted compressive stresses as well as prevention of spalling during impact loading events.</p>
